Kicking the Blues Away By Dave Stamboulis
Expats in Bangkok tend to get the blues, especially during the rainy season. Not enough blue sky to head down to the islands, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to make another trip to the mall. Where to go and what to do? Well, if you have been inspired by the excitement of the recent Euro 2012 matches (and frustrated enough by the cable television shenanigans over broadcasting it), you might want to head down to your nearest local stadium to check out the Thai Premier League.
Thai Port fans are known as the Khlong Toei Army and are about as a goodnatured bunch of sports lovers as one could run into – easy to smile and very welcoming of foreign visitors at the games.
The outside of the stadium resembles a night market or temple fair, with hot dogs, beer, and other goodies being hawked and tailgate parties taking place with plenty of folk music blaring from the back of pickup trucks. Somehow or other, everyone manages to rush in just prior to game time, Founded in 1996 with 12 teams, the Thai Premier League has been growing and the Thai Port end of the field is usually packed with orange- and blueby leaps and bounds ever since. Today, it is made up of 18 teams, who play clad supporters, many carrying drums, placards, giant thumbs-up hands, each other twice a season in vying for the league championship. Movin’ that Booty… at Bootcamp! By Shei Sanchez
Your mind can be a terrible liar when you want it to be. You look good in those new tight trousers, you say. The sag lagging behind you? It’s from the trousers getting old and worn. That shirt fits great. You could hardly see any lumps shamelessly bulging out, especially if you just breathe in for long periods of time until you turn a ghastly blue.
bargain. “Some bootcamps simply focus on how many calories your heart rate monitor suggests you may have burned,” Rich continues. “We aim at full body strength, endurance, and core stability.” In essence, it’s about the quality, not the quantity. Because Rich and Faz focus on form, overall improvement can be achieved.
But when the mirror tells you the truth and your mind begins to waver, that’s when you realize that it’s time to do something about it. Like going to the gym. Or joining the hordes at Lumpini Park. Perhaps you begin to walk to the BTS instead of hopping on a motortaxi. You see stairs as mountains to venture and escalators as steel rubbish to scorn. You’re good to go!
Fifty minutes of varied sweat-inducing exercises isn’t as scary as it sounds. In fact, each workout session is designed to a tee. “Our workouts are planned with precision and meant to be concise,” says Rich. When they say precise, they mean it. The rigorous timing is all part of it, from the warmup in the beginning to the exercises in between, all the way to the cooldown period, when you feel the benefits of the practice. “If we were doing circuit-style training, then the timing would be between 40 to 60 seconds. But every training session has different protocols,” Faz describes. Rich and Faz emphasize variety. “Variety is the key to getting the body to change,” Rich adds. After all, why do a boring routine when you can change it up and diversify? Our bodies quickly adapt to a routine, and this can be more of a hindrance than a help. They admit that their participants love this aspect of variety in their bootcamps, not to mention the equipment they use. The kettlebell lifting and tire flipping are ones to try.
Of course, those you can do. But there is a remedy that will get that quavering mind and drooping body on the right track. It’s called bootcamp and it’s an intensive, yet effective, track to get you back on form. Well, at least, a form that you are satisfied with. We can’t all be models, but we could feel like one – on our own terms. “Bootcamps target different things, depending on the particular instructor or company,” Coach Rich Thurman explains. Master trainer and managing director of Active Lifestyle in Bangkok, Rich has been running these getin-shape programs for about eight years now, with his first bootcamp in Orinda, California. He’s been running them in Bangkok since 2010. Faz Ibrahim, assistant head coach and manager, has been a bootcamp trainer for nearly four years. “I ran a very popular bootcamp in my native Singapore up until joining Active Lifestyle a year ago,” she adds. With these bootcamps, it’s not just about a checklist of calories lost and waistlines shortened. It’s also about how to become stronger and have more energy. Getting trim and fit along the way is only a bonus of the
Such benefits leave you a satisfied feeling that all that hard work in less than an hour has paid off. “The duration of each segment, as well as total duration of the workout, is designed to maintain the quality and effectiveness of movements,” Rich affirms. Interestingly, no matter when you do it, either a bootcamp in the morning or the early evening, you can feel an improvement in energy level. The incentive besides having more of a hop in your step is the assurance that your body is accelerating fat loss and metabolism. And of course the knowledge that you just worked your butt off. Faz can definitely see the development. “It is very fulfilling for me to see

the progress of the participants – the strength and the energy they have acquired from attending the sessions. The atmosphere is always lively and fun and that motivates me even more.” People may miscontrue this idea of ‘bootcamp’ as very extreme or too hardcore. Hearing that word evokes images of wearing fatigues and shaving heads. Seriously, these bootcamps are not that sort at all. “We are not yelling at participants, criticizing, or being abusive. We are supportive, understanding, and encouraging,” Rich explains. It goes without saying that this intensive workout does help when you are surrounded by others in the same boat. “Working out with a group of people is always more fun than being alone, in my opinion,” Faz continues. It’s akin to a collective suffering, perhaps? Or perhaps more of a collective achievement. Either viewpoint, the group training aspect is a motivating factor. Throw the idea of pure weight loss out the window, though it is a welcome perk. Toss stress and discouragement out as well. As Rich confidently expresses, “We are in the business of building people up by providing them with a firm fitness foundation as opposed to tearing them down.” He and Faz have seen marked improvement in movement and flexibility of their bootcampers. Along with that are gains in strength and loss of waistline inches. “Everyone is different and will respond differently,” Rich asserts. “We find that people learn more about themselves. Those who lack a bit of self-confidence tend to gain more confidence. Others who may be a little cocky and arrogant about their fitness level are often humbled.” When push comes to shove, it is really up to you. And in the end, what you find is a better you looking from the other side of the mirror. To find out more about bootcamps and other ways to move that booty of yours, check out www.activelifebkk.com.

Oldies But Goldies By Voicu Mihnea Simandan
I’m always intrigued by novels set in Thailand that were written before ‘my time.’ By that, I mean books written before I was born or when I was still young and didn’t know anything about Asia, in general, and Thailand, in particular. One such novel is The Solid Gold Buddha by W.H. Canaway, a small paperback that I recently bought at a crowded second-hand bookstore in Bangkok. Reading The Solid Gold Buddha was like watching a once-successful movie starring Jean Claude Van Damme – that is, the book might have proved a nice reading experience when it was published, more then 30 years ago, but now you would hardly pick it up just for the sake of entertaining yourself over a weekend’s coffee.
underneath the layer of clay, the Buddha statue was made of gold. Actually, it is the largest golden Buddha image in the world, weighing about five tons. Bernard Miller, a widower who lost his job and who has a sick kid whose medical expenses he cannot meet, decides to steal some of the gold that makes up the Buddha statue: “This was not one of those obese, jolly Buddhas fattened by imperial Chinese influences. It sat in the lotus position. The right hand, golden but with knuckles gleaming silver from the lights, clasped the right shin, while the left lay open on the Buddha’s lap in the gesture of renunciation. The belly and lower torso were columnar, widening into a massive chest and broad, high shoulders. The face was the face of nirvana, untrammelled serenity, with modelled lips and nose, the eyes slightly downcast, and on the head a golden flame aspired, symbol of the soul’s release.”
W.H. Canaway was an English writer who lived between 1925 and 1988. He wrote fifteen novels and is credited with a few successful screenplays and TV series. The Solid Gold Buddha was published in 1979, and it was his penultimate novel; then, twelve years passed until he published, just before his This is the “Mara conquering attitude,” a style highly favored by the Sukhodeath, his last work of fiction, The Helmet and the Cross (1987). thai court. The 700-year-old statue measures 12 feet, 5 inches in diameter and has a height of 15 feet, 9 inches from the base to the crown. AccordThe Solid Gold Buddha must have been written after or during the au- ing to the Guinness Book of Records, the Golden Buddha at Wat Traimitr was thor’s visit to Thailand, where he found out about the Buddha statue worth £37.1 million at its last estimation in 2003. made of pure gold from Wat Traimitr in downtown Bangkok. The history of this Sukhothai period (1238-1378) statue is fascinating – when the In order to succeed in his robbery plans, Miller assembles an internaBurmese army was about to invade Siam, monks covered the statue in tional team of six people, each an expert in their own field: Larry Koclay in order to keep it from being looted by the Burmese army. Pete Mackenzie, an Australian with a small ship; Blue Mackenzie, a literal gold digger (Pete’s brother); and Devendra, an Indian girl who worked in Hari’s troupe. But, as “gold does funny things to people,” the reader can expect betrayals and several other complications that would have made a successful action movie in the ’70s. Staying true to its times, Bernard Miller, the main character, not only has a brilliant mind, but he’s also an excellent lover and, thus, is able to bed any woman he fancies. (Miller is just like Van Damme, who beats up everyone and gets all the sexy women!) Still, the book makes an interesting read. The action takes place in a Bangkok that doesn’t seem too different from what you might see on its streets today: a mixed crowd of expats, corrupt police officers, Chinese mafia bosses, poor Thais with a gambling problem, and hungry-for-fame politicians. To that, W.H. Canaway adds expensive hotels, exotic women, beautiful temples, unbearable heat, pious monks, cheap prices, spicy food, and samlors (cycle rickshaws). All these are the usual ingredients that make up Krung Thep, the City of Bangkok. For those who live in – or at least have visited – Bangkok at one point or another, The Solid Gold Buddha will make a good read, but don’t expect a literary masterpiece. For those who plan to come to Bangkok, the book will also make a pleasant read, giving them a taste of what the Thai capital used to be like a few decades ago. The book has long been out of print, so your best chance of finding it will be at Chatuchak Weekend Market, a secondhand bookstore, or second-hand copies are available for a cheap price

from all around the world – just Google and find your favorite way to get it shipped internationally. The temple where most of the main action takes place still stands today. Its full name is Wat Traimitr Withayaram Wora Wiharn and is located at the end of Charoenkrung (or Yaowarad) Road in Chinatown, just a few minutes’ walk from Hua Lumpong train/MRT station. The temple is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the exhibitions on the second floor (Yaowarat Chinatown Heritage Center) and third floor (Phra Buddha Maha Suwanna Patimakorn Exhibition) are open from Tuesday to Sunday only. Every day, you can say a prayer or snap pictures of the Golden Buddha located on the fourth floor. Although Wat Traimitr hosts the largest golden Buddha image in the world, it is well rooted in today’s modern days. Not only that, the temple has a bilingual Thai-English website (www.wattraimitr-withayaram.com) with around 300 unique page views a day, and its activities are also promoted on social media platforms, such as a Facebook fan page, a Twitter account, and a YouTube channel. Admission tickets for foreigners are 100 baht for the exhibitions and 40 baht for the Golden Buddha hall with the usual advice on dressing appropriately. Tickets may be purchased at the side building of the temple. Voicu Mihnea Simandan is a Romanian writer who has been a member of the Bangkok Writers’ Guild since 2008. The more proactive you are in getting involved in organizations (such as PMI chapters, or volunteering your PM skills where needed in your community) the more visibility you have within the project management industry, and the more successful you will be. Create a ‘brag sheet’. Many times when we finish a project, we can rush through the closing process and lessons learned so quickly in preparation to dive into the next project. At the end of each project, take some time to add to your ‘brag sheet’. What went well in the project? Were you under budget or ahead of schedule? How did the deliverables of the project benefit the key stakeholders? This is something that you need to document for yourself, as most likely, no one else is keeping track of your successes. When it comes to Thai food from the south, think very hot, spicy, and seafood-based. Given a long coastline, this isn’t too hard to imagine. And it is a fact that eating and drinking hot foods and beverages in a humid climate does actually help to cool down the body. Southern Thai cooking has its roots in the Indian Muslim migration, hence quite a few dishes bear resemblance to their Indian counterparts, with spices such as turmeric, coriander, cumin, and cardamom used in abundance. As the southern region is rich in coconut trees, thick coconut milk also features prominently in all the curries. Most of those gaeng curries you see at your local shop, gaeng Penang, gaeng kiaow waan – green, red, and Penang curries – all come originally from the south.
As the south is predominantly Muslim, chicken figures a lot more prominently than pork, and several popular offerings are khao mok gai, which is a Thai version of biryani, fragrant yellow rice chicken cooked with plenty of turmeric. Another huge favorite is massaman gai, a thick and rich curry with potatoes and chicken, flavored with cinnamon, cardamom, and tamarind.
Roti, the base for all those backpacker banana pancakes, is a pan-fried bread which comes from the south via India. Sometimes filled with meat and usually served with a massaman curry dipping sauce, roti are commonly served for breakfast in southern coffee shops. While Bangkok doesn’t really have a coffee shop culture other than the imported one of Starbucks and the like, in the south, there is actually a tradition of coffee drinking, with sweet iced café boran (ancient coffee, as it is called!) served in roti and congee porridge Kanom jeen Chinese noodles are found throughout Thailand, but the co- shops, where strong coffee is filtered through a sock and sweetened with conut-based fish curry version served in the south is probably the tastiest. condensed milk and where patrons linger over several cups. Garden Parties By Shei Sanchez
How do you add extra to ordinary? Perhaps a bit of salt or garlic here, some lime juice or mint there. When it comes to food with Garden Parties, extraordinary is only one way of putting it. Try out-of-this-world. Better yet, sink your teeth in – and your appetite – to some downright mouthwatering flavors. After Garden Parties, you will understand how good food should be. “It’s a project done by and for people who love flavorful food and love sharing it,” describes Kyle Goode, the head chef and co-founder of this forfoodie, by-foodie enterprise. A cooking class and catering outfit based in Bangkok, Garden Parties is all about how delectable a dish can be, not just through its ingredients, but also in how these ingredients are brought together – simply and creatively. In short, it’s about how you can relish in the eating and, perhaps, in the making of honest-to-goodness food – and have fun while doing both. Not only does Garden Parties provide classes and catering, but they also hold monthly events at their home and, as one would expect, their garden. “We offer our customers an opportunity to get to know and enjoy our food, and us,” explains Joe Serrani, co-founder and fellow chef. Upon walking into their home, exclaiming a ‘wow’ does not begin to describe the modestlysized garden with over 30 varieties of edible vegetables, fruits, and herbs. To be sure, smells of succulent food also begin wafting from the kitchen and into hungry bellies. Besides the chance to eat and socialize, there is also the high possibility of guests who can network and perhaps form a cooking class together or ask about catering events at their own home or elsewhere. Needless to say, the atmosphere at Garden Parties during these events induces a loosening-up and unwinding-of-the-week kind of mood, as if the garden partiers are at a friend’s place having a good time with a good meal in good company.
“The key thing that makes us stand out is our ‘throw out the rulebook’ approach to food. Rather than sticking to traditions or fusing a couple of national cuisines, all ingredients and preparations are up for grabs when creating a dish. We try to marvelously surprise our customers’ palates,” continues Joe. Indeed, past events included vegan and vegetarian fare, as well as rich and creamy ones, the kind that make jaws drop and mouths drool. Time and again, this rulebook is tossed out the window as Garden Parties provoked ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ with dishes that can only be described with three words… so damn good. One such dish for Tongues in Cheeks, their vegan and vegetarian event, is ‘Cheesing Rainbows,’ an alternative fondue with seven different kinds of combinations of a vegetable and a cheese. Colorful and heavenly, this Garden Parties item is telling of the innovation and out-of-the-box approach to good food. For Deliciously Rich, the flipside to a vegetarian’s world, Garden Parties offered, you guessed it, more velvety and decadent dishes that included a prime rib roast au jus with wasabi crème fraiche and tamarind jam. For an tickling appetizer, ‘My Amusing Bouche’ featured a Phuket lobster poached in beurre blanc. Garden Parties’ most recent event combined the forces of Joe, who has a background in Japanese cookery, and a Thai native chef named Pae, who has a similar experience with this cuisine. In When Mio Met Mamuang, guests had the pleasure of partaking in house-cured salmon lox bundles bound with strands of lime leaf, and in grilled marinated pumpkin steaks that had a tamarind-peanut-dark soy glaze to die for. The final nosh for this event’s evening was the well-received chocolate sushi rolls. These faux sushi nuggets were topped with avocado slivers and garnished with a creamy coconut sauce. What with these new spins on food using as many local and organic ingredients as possible and marrying it with international techniques, it’s not a

Kyle and Joe have been in the cooking (and eating) business since their time earning dough, so to speak, in the United States almost a decade ago. With a solid background working in several kitchens and carrying a rich mix of cuisines on their belt, the two chefs have the insight and foresight of what goes into a memorable, tasty meal and where the movement of wholesome living and eating is heading. As long-time residents of Thailand, they have added this country’s rich and diverse canvas of food on their plate. Apart from French and Italian, Kyle is also au courant with Cajun, new American, new southern and the ever-popular fusion cuisines. It is no wonder that this duo can heartily dole out the kind of eclectic fare people rave about. Garden Parties’ ambience is enhanced by a third business partner, Solène Janique, a scientist by trade, but a couturière-of-decoration at heart. “I want people to feel at home and comfortable, but I want it in a more ornamental, snazzy fashion,” she says. Details matter, and Solène wants that attention to the little things to show and shine. Without a doubt, the environment does play a special role when guests delight themselves in the food. “A good atmosphere and fine, yet subtle, decoration allow people to appreciate the food and have an overall satisfying experience.” Solène’s inspirations are from her native France, where receiving (and wowing) guests are a norm. “I want people to come and relax right away in a surprise Garden Parties’ garden partiers keep coming back for more. And festive setting that they may rarely have on a regular work week.” certainly, former and potential guests can learn how to bring that new spin onto their own plate. “We teach people how to cook, not follow a recipe,” For more information on Garden Parties and what they have to ofKyle Goode explains his philosophy on the cooking classes. Don’t Flip Out By Voicu Mihnea Simandan
Technical. Physical. Fast. That’s how judo could be labeled in just three words. If you’ve ever found yourself in a dojo, or a training center, looking from the side at the judoka, or the judo practitioners, you would see skilled martial artists who use both their technique and physical strength to bring down an opponent. And then, all of a sudden, something happens, and one judoka is on the floor, locked in an inescapable chokehold. All you’re left wanting to know is, when can you start training? If you live in Bangkok, then that’s easy, because there are at least three very good training facilities where you can join Thai and expat judoka. The standard that you will find in these dojo is quite good – the fourteen medals that the Thai judo team brought home from the recent Southeast Asian Games stand as just but some of the proof. Judo, meaning ‘gentle way’ in Japanese, was set up as a self-defense martial art by Jigoro Kano, a Japanese master who had previously studied ju-jutsu. Towards the end of the 19th century, judo as a discipline already had its governing headquarters at the Kodan Judo Institute in Tokyo. From here, with the help of various masters, judo became known worldwide and, in 1964, became an Olympic sport at the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. With the exception of 1968, judo has been present at each Olympiad ever since. In 1964, Thailand sent three representatives to the judo Olympic competitions, but unfortunately, they didn’t brought home any medals, a fact which remains true through today. It is not surprising that Japan tops the Olympic judo medals tally chart, followed at a great distance by France and South Korea. This year, one athlete will represent Thailand at the 2012 London Olympics. Having a world rank of 77, Homklin Teerawat has qualified for the Olympics in the under-100 kg category after a competition organized by the Judo Union of Asia. He’s even had the chance of meeting Asif Ahmad, the British Ambassador in Bangkok, who, during an activity organized by the Sports Authority of Thailand, met up with the Thai Olympian judoka and the national representatives for archery and windsurfing. Let’s hope that this year, out of the 14 judo medals available in London, one will be hung around Homklin Teerawat’s neck.
A judoka and their sensei, or instructor, must wear a special uniform called judogi. This consists of a cotton jacket and drawstring pants while a belt (obi) is used to fasten the jacket. If the belts can be of various colors (from white to black), depending on the rank of the practitioner, the judogi can be only white or blue. It is a distinction needed in order to be able to identify the two opponents in a competition. Jerome Le Louer is a 30-year-old French judoka who holds the 1st Dan Black Belt rank. He has been in Thailand since 2005 and started training regularly in Bangkok five years ago. Jerome’s passion for judo began when he was only seven. “It was my first sport,” he remembers. “In France, judo is a very popular sport, just like soccer, so almost every French guy has done some judo at some point in their childhood. I liked judo a lot, as every class was an opportunity to learn something new, and I was good in competitions too, so that definitely gave me great motivation to go on.” Jerome is now based in Bangkok, where he is the CFO of Pronto Marketing, a company that provides Internet Presence Management solutions. He trains weekdays at the dojo within the Hua Mark Stadium where most Thai national team members and RBAC students attend. The number of judoka he trains with varies a lot, from a few people to over twenty people when there’s a competition to prepare for. But, compared to his home country, “Judo in Thailand is not as popular as in France, where there are roughly 600,000 players.” Although Jermone is still fit and willing to compete, sadly there are not a lot of competitions in Thailand he can join. “In Thailand, I’m participating each year in maybe two university competitions, plus an International Judo Tournament (this year it was held in June). Each year, there are over ten countries participating, so it’s quite an interesting event.” But Jerome does not limit himself to Thailand only. He also makes time to travel in the region to judo tournaments held in Vietnam and Indonesia, countries that organize tournaments each year. He recently returned from Hanoi, where he won the silver medal in the under-90 kg category at the Hanoi International Judo Open 2012. This was not a surprise to those who

know Jerome. Last year, he won the bronze at the Thai Judo Open, while in 2010, he got the gold at the judo tournaments held in Thailand and Indonesia. And the list of medals goes on and on, all the way back to 2008. Jerome confesses that although judo is relatively popular in Thailand, “it’s difficult for players to improve (even the national team), as they’re not participating in a lot of competitions, and Thais don’t have enough quality coaches that teach technique. A standard training session in Thailand follows the same pattern: warm up, fitness, self-practice, fights. This is good because you get a good condition and do some randori (fights), but as far as I’m concerned, my judo is not improving that much. I’m fighting with the same guys that I have known for years over and over, and there’s no new techniques taught, so it’s sometimes frustrating.” Thai fighters have good basics and great potential, but it is true that without more technique and more international exposure, it will be difficult for them to reach the next level. “If you consider the regional competitions like the SEA Games, they’re doing very well, reaching the podium in most categories, but they don’t do much at the Asian Games because they meet players from the Middle East, Korea, and Japan who are great judo fighters, with a lot of techniques and experience in competition.” Speaking of the benefits of judo, Jerome says that “judo is for anyone, but the younger you start, the better. It’s a lot about sensations, and how you manage your opponent’s strength in a fight to win. Technique is quite wide, MMA Club, there are only a few judoka training under his supervision, while with a lot to learn, and I believe that it might be one of the sports where you the two university clubs have about twenty practitioners. can’t know it all; you always have something to learn. And, in competition, you’ll always find someone who’s better than you.” Speaking of the biggest difference between judo in Thailand and judo in Europe, Nigel confesses that “judo is far more popular in the UK, but judo Nigel Crofts, a 63-year old retired British national, is a 6th Dan Black Belt was really at its zenith in the 1960s and 1970s. Judo in the UK is far more (Rokudan - Red and White Belt) who has been training in Thailand for the structured with clearly defined objectives to achieve each grade. You also last nine years. Also, at your 1st Dan (the 35, he has more than enough experience under his belt. first Black Belt), you would be considered to have only just started. Most people’s perception is that you have reached mastery of judo, when in fact, Referring to the judo movement in Thailand, Nigel says, “Unfortunately, it is completely the opposite.” judo is a minority sport in Thailand. As an outsider, it is difficult to form any opinion as to whether there is any judo movement in Thailand. Certainly, In Bangkok, there are three training places where you can fine-tune your most of the universities in Bangkok have judo clubs. In Chiang Mai, there judo skills. The first, where the Thai national team trains, is located on the are only three clubs. To put this in perspective, in the city (of the same size third floor of the Sports Science Center in the Hua Mark Sports Complex on as Chiang Mai) where I live in the UK, there are at least ten clubs, each club Ramkhamhaeng Road. Training starts daily at 6 p.m. and lasts until 8 a.m., having about fifty-sixty members. The club I left behind when I came to with the exception of Sunday and Monday, when the dojo is closed. Classes Thailand had two hundred members practicing judo!” are free of charge. Check out their official website at www.judothailand.com (Thai language only). In Chiang Mai, Nigel trains in all three dojo, which are located within Chiang Mai University, Rajabaht University, and the MMA Club Chiang Mai. At the The second one is at Thai-Japanese Sport Complex (or Thai-Ippun as it is known by locals) in Din Daeng area, where you can train every Saturday and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. or 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., respectively. There are also weekday classes between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. Registration is 40 baht/year (one photo and passport copy are needed for initial registration). The third dojo is located within the training areas of National Stadium (near the National Stadium BTS station). Doors open at 6 p.m., and you can train until 9 p.m. every day from Monday to Friday. If you live in the north of Thailand, then you might want to check out Nigel’s dojo in Chiang Mai. The MMA Club is located near the railway station, on the east bank of the Ping River. In Nigel Crofts’s opinion, “Judo is a difficult sport to take up. Both physically demanding, and at time, progress can seem very slow compared to other martial arts. But to some people, this is the very reason to take up the sport.” At the same time, Jerome Le Louer is of the opinion that “judo gives you a healthy and complete body because all parts of your body need to be trained to be a good player. Judo is also teaching great values like respect, humility, and self-control, which we all need in our daily lives.” Judo in Thailand also has a fan page at www.facebook.com/JudoZone.
