ome visitors describe Hanoi as sheer chaos. I prefer to call it poetry in motion. One of Asia’s most bustling and vibrant cities, Hanoi does tend to always seem to be going at full speed sensory overload, but for colorful street life, it certainly is Southeast Asia’s most photogenic poster child. While many tourists want to tick off the city’s sightseeing checklists, such as the austere Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum or peaceful Temple of Literature, I prefer Hanoi’s street-side wonders. Row upon row of small cafés where one can sit and linger over a cup of the strongest and sweetest coffee in the world (which takes 15 minutes to drip-filter) while watching the vendors in their conical bamboo hats balance their baguettes and flowers on weighted poles as they meander the streets looking for buyers. Or perhaps quaffing down a few cold glasses of bia hoi (fresh beer, a northern specialty, also found on virtually every street corner) on a hot day, sitting on a tiny stool in the shade and watching the sea of thousands of motorcycles go by. Despite the frantic pace, Hanoi feels dreamy and surreal. Old colonial buildings

and orange-painted crumbling walls provide a backdrop to the teeming street life. Bicycle rickshaws languidly roll by in the heat. The colonial reminders are everywhere, whether they be the stately Opera House and its columned faรงade, or 1920s French mansions found tucked away off the busy streets. Hoan Kiem Lake, the centerpiece of the Old Quarter, seems to always be bathed in perpetual mist and is full of elderly folks practicing ballroom dancing and Tai Chi or of lovers lingering on benches, arms entwined. Just like the thousands of coffee drinkers who appear to sit forever, slowly sipping cups of coffee made from beans that have been digested and shat out by a civet cat (which they say enhances the flavor), they all are finding a way to slow down in a city that on its surface appears so speeded up. Other than people watching, the greatest treat in Hanoi is its food. From the ubiquitous pho noodle stalls on every corner to the banh cuon stuffed rice pancakes or famed cha ca fried fish with turmeric, chilies, and noodles that have been raved about by food critics in the international press. More upscale spots like the Green Tangerine, housed in a lovely 1928 home, dishes out fine nouvelle French-Vietnamese haute cuisine, and the nearby Highway 4 serves up excellent hard-to-find varieties from all over Vietnam in a trendy and happening spot, accompanied by shots of fine crafted local rice wine.

If the traffic and noise do get to be too much – or even if they don’t – the one ‘must’ in Hanoi actually involves getting out of town. Halong Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is three hours from Hanoi and is famed for its thousands of limestone karst peaks that rise dramatically from the bay. The best way to see Halong Bay is by cruising on a traditional Chinese junk and spending an evening or two aboard the boat, taking in the various cave complexes, floating villages, kayaking opportunities, and beaches on sleepy Cat Ba Island, all out in the bay. All guaranteed to get you back to Hanoi rested and recuperated, and perhaps seeing northern Vietnam’s capital with a bit more of an unhurried attitude. Believe me, the café-, bia hoi-, and rice wine-paced lifestyle is actually quite addicting.

By The Way Do. Visiting Halong Bay while in Hanoi is an absolute must. It is barely possible to do as a day trip but highly recommended to do 2 or 3 days, spending the night on a traditional junk in the bay. Best to book in advance and do your research, as there are some dicey operators amongst the many. Paradise Cruises – www.paradisecruises.vn – run some of the most personal and luxurious trips taking you to lesser trafficked areas of Halong Bay. Tel: +84 4 3939 2929. Street Tours: With the language barrier, finding the best street food or hidden gems can be tough. Street tours by local kids have been the latest fad hitting the Hanoi tourist scene. Hanoi Kids – hanoikids.org – is recommended, and the guides are all enthusiastic volunteers.
Stay. The Movenpick Hotel – www.moevenpick-hotels.com – is one of Hanoi’s most superb sleeps, featuring beautiful French colonial architecture, stately rooms, and very conveniently located near the railway station, old quarter, Temple of Literature, and Hoan Kiem Lake. They serve up a sumptuous breakfast buffet, offer first class service, and a serene haven away from the busy streets. 83A Ly Thuong Kiet. Tel: +84 4 3822 2800.
Taste. Street food is fantastic in Hanoi, if you can figure out what it is and how to order it. For something a bit more refined, try: Highway 4 – www.highway4.com – This fabulous bar and restaurant is named after the road running through the spine of Vietnam’s mountains, where the country’s best rice wine is king. Highway 4 brews up its own award winning Son Tinh liqueur and has an amazing array of dishes from all over the mountainous regions on the menu, plus a great happening bar-restaurant vibe. 5 Hàng Tre. Tel: +84 4 3926 4200. Green Tangerine – greentangerinehanoi.com – What do you get when you fuse fine French cuisine with a Vietnamese twist, served in a beautiful old home in the Old Quarter? Voila, perfection! For a real romantic night out and some truly fine dining. 48 Hang Be. Tel: +84 4 3825 1286.
Go. AirAsia – www.airasia.com – services between Bangkok (Don Mueang International Airport) and Hanoi with two daily flights with low fares. And with AirAsia’s very easy Internet check-in, you can check in at www.airasia.com and print out your boarding pass from home! FLIGHT FD 2782 FD 2783

hiang Mai is a favorite destination for those who enjoy escaping the mad rush of the capital to explore the natural beauties and temples of the north. And in the past several years, Chiang Mai has also emerged as a province catering not only for those looking for a relaxed holiday, but also to the more adventurous kind who find zip lining, bungee jumping, hot air balloon flying, and off-road driving more to their liking. One such off-road activity perfectly suited for these adrenaline junkies is driving a buggy in the jungle-covered hills and mountains. X-Center is one company specialized in extreme entertainment activities that include, among others, exactly that: off-road buggy treks. X-Center is run by Ian has passed a driver’s license test and can last anywhere between an hour Rauner, a businessman from New Zealand who has been involved in devel- and an hour and a half, depending on the driver’s speed and the number oping and running tourist attractions in Thailand since 1992. of breaks. All tours start in the car park where drivers are briefed on their itinerary and are fitted with the necessary safety accessories, such as jumpsuits, safety glasses, and crash helmets. You’ll be driving on roads less travelled, as parts of the treks are inaccessible by public transportation. Of course, such a journey requires extra safety measures and the company makes everything possible to avoid accidents. As such, the buggies have full roll cages, racing seats, and full four-point harness seat belts – even with the possibility that a driver rolls the buggy over, there should be no major human harm. These safety precautions are possible because the buggies at X-Center are built to order and have Daihatsu and Toyota engines with powers from 250cc to 1,500cc for the ‘super-buggies.’ The costs involved are quite high, but keeping in mind the high safety measures set in place and the high cost of spare parts, they are worth it. A one-hour trip in a two-seater buggy costs 4,500 baht, an option preferred by most beginners or people on holiday who just want to go for a leisure drive. Experienced drivers would most likely enjoy a two-hour trip on a 1,000cc or 1,500cc super-buggy. This would cost them 7,000 baht with the possibility of having a ‘co-driver’ in the passenger seat. The super-buggies are reserved for licensed drivers and a 5,000 baht deposit is required before the start of the trek (which will be refunded, as long as no damaged is incurred to the buggies). X-Center has a big fleet of buggies, so it can accommodate large groups, which will be taken on their off-road adventure with a guide in the lead car and another one in a trailing car. Their clients are 60% foreigners and 40% Thai, most of them on vacation, but there are a few local aficionados who have become regular customers. “Anyone who can drive can enjoy our trips, as they are not a race,” emphasizes Ian.“Although quite challenging, you can drive at your own pace, and it is pretty easy. You can stop at anytime and ask to be assisted by our guides if required.”
X-Center – www.chiangmai-xcentre.com – is located just off the main road in Mae Rim on the Maerim-Samoeng Road, a 25-minute drive from the center of Chiang Mai city. To take advantage of their free pick-up service, contact them in advance via email at sales@chiangmai-xcentre.com or by phone to 087-833-6655. ‘Coder,’ ‘H’ for all-around ‘Hustler,’ and so on – and it opens the door for the sort of conversations you come to have with fellow entrepreneurs. Bangkok is one of Asia’s hottest start-up scenes, and there are plenty of reasons why. Thailand is a cheap place to get an idea out there, and there’s a number of places to get your start-up, well, started up. Forget trying to hunch over a laptop at a coffee shop while hoping the free wi-fi is working and secure. For the price of two pretentious coffees, you get a day with a desk, a high-speed internet connection, and the limitless mindset that comes from being around other entrepreneurs. The culture in each place is different, naturally, but anyone hanging around the common areas is most likely up for conversation. Just like at the gym, anyone with headphones is hanging a virtual ‘do not disturb’ sign on their back.

found myself surrounded by brilliant people, dozens of folks sitting in adult-sized beanbag chairs or ultra-comfy foam chairs, all thinking about or working on a new business idea. They may be at different levels of development, but they’re all hungry. Some have full-time office jobs and work on their ideas on evenings and weekends, while others draw on savings to dedicate more time
and energy to their idea. Whatever they do during the day, they’ve all come together for a meeting that could change their lives. This gathering of minds is called ‘Get a Partner,’ and its mission is to match up people with projects to people looking to join projects. It should be noted, of course, that this scene changes by the millisecond. New places open, familiar and comfortable places close, and groups come and go as the founders start other projects. Prices and hours can also change without warning. Whether you call them start-up incubators, launch pads, or the newfangled garage, these sorts of places offer a getaway from home and the day job – in short, what an art studio is to a painter or sculptor, along with a place to socialize with like-minded people. Most places have day rates, along with some good discounts on longer rentals.

It’s not just that a few people are throwing some internet cables into a post-modern space and calling it a workspace. And there’s a lot more to a successful start-up scene than having a few places to write a business plan, or mind map, or to code the next hot app. Part of Bangkok’s success comes from having funds available to the most promising ideas, along with several high-profile entrepreneurial events. While the mainstream world isn’t likely to hear about them, Startup Weekends, Angelhack, SeedStarsWorld, and Geeks on a Plane are just a few of the organizations making stuff happen around Bangkok. Thailand is a natural expansion point for many of these groups, since they’re already established in other Asian countries.

A very good example of an instructive, descriptive, evocative autobiography with a personal story to tell is The Never Lonely Planet (Book Publishing By Voicu Mihnea Simandan Guild, 2012) by Dubai-based British travel writer Martin R. Actually, even the title of the book, & photos by Regin Reyno a play on words on the highly respected Lonely Planet brand, suggest the kind of reading experience Martin’s book hopes to give to its readers: a ravel writing is quite easy to classify. caught the travel bug, Martin started ‘touring’ the Middle East where the need for skilled engineers in a booming oil industry secured the author lucrative contracts in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Now, based in Dubai, Martin has the financial security to keep on living his childhood dream, jumping from one plane to another, visiting the world at large. Half of The Never Lonely Planet is dedicated to the author’s travels in Asia, especially Southeast Asia, where in the late ’90s, nature was still largely unspoiled by tourist developments. His travels to Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam have left on him a profound love for that part of the world and a deep feeling of respect for its inhabitants. Although at times the book reads similar to a social studies textbook, with far more details than necessary about the geography and the history of each locale Martin has visited, the bits and pieces of personal reflections definitely make the reading very worthwhile. The writer-traveler discovers and experiences new cultures like any “good traveler” who “has no fixed plans and does not care when he arrives.” Touring Southeast Asia, the golden stupas and Buddhist statues of Burma impressed Martin the most, while his trip to Cambodia was a grim reminder of Pol Pot’s brutal regime in the Khmer Rouge during the mid-to-late 1970s. Thailand was mostly enjoyed through the Thai beaches, bars, good food, and golf, and once he had crossed the Mekong River, Martin experienced the laidback lifestyle of the local Laotian population. The journey to Vietnam involved dodging enormous rats and making sure no dog-as-food was served at his table, whilst a short business trip to China resulted in an unfortunate communication nightmare.
return from his travels, so the book doesn’t have a central theme for the readers to follow and, at several points, it even loses its rhythm with offtopic details. It has been decades since some of the journal entries were written, and although things have changed in the meantime, Martin chose not to alter his text and update it to the current state of affairs. Instead, he added short, news-like pieces at the end of some chapters, further fragmenting the reading experience, but bringing the book in line with the latest historical, political, and economical developments of his former destinations.
In The Never Lonely Planet, Martin R. Oliver doesn’t waste any chance at slamming down on America’s ‘habit’ to police the world. From the ruthless bombings of Laos and Vietnam during the Vietnam War in the ’60s to the USA’s intervention in Iraq during the 1990s and early 2000s, Martin has very strong words for any outsider’s intervention The various chapters making up The Never Lonely that infringes on the human rights of the local Planet were most likely written soon after Martin’s population.
However, it is also important to note that his stance against the oppression of the weak is more than just words on paper. The author plans to donate all the proceeds from sales of his book to ECPAT (End Child Prostitution and Trafficking), an NGO headquartered in Thailand that works towards ending child prostitution, child pornography, and child trafficking for sexual purposes. So, by purchasing The Never Lonely Planet by Martin R. Oliver, not only will you enjoy the author’s autobiographical travel journal, but you will also make a personal contribution to the betterment of unfortunate children exploited for sexual reasons. “Go check out the world,” Martin encourages his readers in the last paragraph of the book. “You may find that it really is the never lonely planet.” The book is available as a paperback here in Thailand at Kinokuniya and Asia Books locations, by mail order via Amazon.co.uk, and through various third party booksellers on Amazon.com.

Blue Sky Group
holds foundation stone ceremony for 2-billion baht Grande Caribbean Condo Resort Pattaya
Harrison Real Estate’s Property Expo in China and the Bangkok Post Luxury Living event at Central World. Mr. Thavatchai Sachdev, Director of Blue Sky Group commented, “Pre-sale results have been far beyond our expectations and we really appreciate the great feedback our clients have given us. This also proves that Pattaya continues to be one of Thailand’s premier tourism destinations and there is still wide-spread optimism in the growth opportunity of the city’s real estate market. With sales and marketing efforts proceeding at a better than expected pace, our main concern now turns to the environment of Pattaya and ensuring that all environmental issues are taken into consideration during construction of the building. Our priority is to follow all processes in line with approved Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) standards to make sure there is no detrimental effect to the nature and environment of Pattaya, whilst at the same delivering the best quality product possible to our clients.” Determined in its continuing mission to be a provider of high quality real estate, Blue Sky Group has contracted Vorakit Construction Co., Ltd., the foremost Pattaya-based construction company with a solid background in building many of the luxurious condominiums and hotels dotting the city’s skyline. With construction having begun at Grande Caribbean Condo Resort Pattaya, the coming months will see a steady realization of Blue Sky Group’s concept taking shape by redefining the meaning of luxurious resort living: “Where holidays become homes” means that no matter how long your stay, everyday feels like a holiday.

Mr. Thavatchai Sachdev, Director of Blue Sky Group, also took the opportunity to state his environmental concerns and revealed the extensive, positive response the project has garnered from both Thai and overseas buyers. Grande Caribbean Condo Resort Pattaya is Blue Sky Group’s premium real estate project in the heart of Pattaya. Located on Thapphaya Road between South Pattaya and Jomtien Beach, the project takes the concept of a holiday home to the next level by offering a completely turnkey solution that provides everything you need to simply walk in and start living. Additionally, its desirable environment amidst lush, tropical rainforest gardens, multi-level pools and lagoons gives residents of the Grande Caribbean Condo Resort Pattaya a perfect haven for holiday experiences. Blue Sky Group introduced the initial low-rise phase of the Grande Caribbean project with four 8-storey buildings, followed shortly after sales closed of its first phase by a striking 30-storey tower named “The Cruz Grande Caribbean”. So far, both phases of the project have received a consistently positive response from local and overseas investors. Driving the Luxury Market By Dave Stamboulis
Looking around Bangkok, it is quite astounding to see the continued growth of the luxury lifestyle market by leaps and bounds. Ten years ago, nobody would have ever dreamed that the city would become a sea of never-ending high-end condominiums, swank luxury hotels, lavish five-star restaurants, and opulent shopping malls selling all of the most fashionable and expensive designer brands in the world. With all of the property and shops, along came the world’s most premium carmakers, of course. Mango Metro recently caught up with Herfried Hasenoehrl, the General Manager of Rolls-Royce’s Emerging Markets Asia, recently here to promote the Thailand launch of the new Rolls-Royce, the Wraith, and got his take on where luxury is headed here and just what it’s like to be head of the marketing and management in Asia of the most elite automobile in the world.
service and attention when it comes to doing business, and so we must be exceptional in what we are providing.
Austrian-born Hasenoehrl graduated from the Leopold-Franzens University in Innsbruck, receiving a master’s degree in Business Administration and Economics. He first became exposed to Asia serving as the head of BMW’s international sales and marketing operations here. He further worked as the senior manager for BMW’s product and brand management in Asia, settling down with his family in Singapore. It’s not often that one gets to sit down with someone who markets one of the world’s top brands here in Bangkok, and Hasenoehrl certainly has some interesting angles on it all.
MM: Is Thailand different in any way from some of the other emerging markets here?
MM: The market for luxury goods in Bangkok has been going up and up over the years, as more people find upward mobility, have better and more disposable income, and want more comfort and convenience. Do you think this will peak soon? What can we expect for the future here? HH: Emerging markets tend to go through these rapid rises that do level off a bit, but what it is really about in a market like Thailand is sustainable growth. You hear a lot of people today saying that the market isn’t good or that growth has stagnated, say if it has fallen from 20% to 5%, but they forget that 5% is still 5% and that growth always continues over time.
HH: Well, at least in the luxury automobile industry, we have to recognize the fact that in Thailand, it is a chauffeur-driven market, which you would think might affect sales, but actually many of the high-end auto owners here own more than one or two models of what they like, and while they might have a chauffeur drive them to meetings or elsewhere with one car, they prefer to get behind the wheel of something that is really special to them and take it out on the streets themselves. And with all the bespoke MM: Given that most companies are trying to sell the largest numbers of custom fittings that are done now, it is quite easy to drive on the roads of their products to the most buyers, it must be a bit odd and certainly dif- Thailand. ferent marketing such an elite brand where you are probably selling very small numbers? MM: How about yourself, what do you do when you are not being a spokesman for Rolls-Royce here in Asia? HH: That is true. While we do have target numbers, just like any other business, we are dealing with a niche market. Here in Thailand, this market is HH: Having a growing family means spending more and more time at made up of people from top-level management positions, entrepreneurs home, although I do tend to get out and play tennis, golf, and as many who have made bold moves, and those who have been fortunate enough sports as I can. I also love travelling but inevitably end up looking for new to have inherited family wealth. What makes this extremely challenging opportunities wherever I go. I have learned that there are always more is that all of these three groups have one thing in common, in that they opportunities out there than we think there are, and this keeps me chalare all extremely successful and have the utmost highest expectations of lenged, perhaps at the expense of just going out and relaxing.
