MOBILE MIXOLOGY By Dave Stamboulis

W

ith the recent ‘emergency tax’ on alcohol already driving expensive import prices through the roof, party animals are having to rethink their drinking strategies. Of course, this all comes as we ring in the New Year, probably the biggest period of not staying sober in the entire calendar. Fortunately, Bangkok is blessed with plenty of maverick mixologist entrepreneurs, and thus, the mobile VW cocktail bar has become a most-welcome fixture on the streets of Krungthep at night.

Mobile mixology isn’t something new though. The famed Volk Bar, which has become a permanent non-vehicle drinking establishment at the Coco Walk in Ratchathewi, was started up over a decade ago by owner Saran Bandigasat, who had plenty of bartending experience but no money to pay for rental fees for his own startup. Bandigasat figured that the hippie-ish Khao San Road crowd would be a great place to start, and so he rolled his VW bus over to Banglamphu, packed with bottles of whiskey, gin, and vodka, and started serving up glasses of jungle juice for 50 baht a shot. That morphed It’s no surprise to find young partygoers gravitating towards the glowing to over 500 cocktails per night and eventually led to Volk Bar becoming a and colorful Volkswagen buses and other rigged-up vehicles that can now franchise. be found en masse along Sukhumvit 11, around the Khao San Road area, and in the new version of the Talad Rot Fai Retro Market, which has been Bandigasat started a trend that not only catered to earning a living, but moved to behind Seacon Square. After all, the VW bus, also known as the combined it with the freedom to roll around town and be one’s own boss, Transporter, was the icon of counterculture in the United States in the 1960s, not tied down to an office, nine-to-five. Kind of like the hippies of the ’60s with the colorfully painted ‘hippie vans’ becoming famed for the mobile taking off from traditional work roles and living spaces and getting out to and alternative lifestyle, as well as a symbol of freedom and independence. enjoy the wonders of the road. While we complain about drink prices in Bangkok these days, at the same time, running a bar in the City of Angels is no cheap endeavor anymore. Rents are sky-high, competition is intense, and in a city known for love of the new and novel, today’s trendy watering hole is an empty bucket tomorrow. Thus, mobile drink vans serve a great niche for both proprietor and customer. Depending on the neighborhood, most VW bars serve mixed drinks for 100 baht or less, with killer ‘buckets’ going for 200-300.

The Wonderland Bar, which usually sets up most nights of the week near Oskar on Sukhumvit 11, is run by a mellow, middle-aged fellow who goes by the name of Show. Show has been operating his bar since 1987, and he can remember when he was the only bar on the street, let alone a mobile one. Also a former indoor bartender, he too wanted to do something different and be freed from the constraints of a boss and regulated hours. The Wonderland Bar’s cocktail menu is staggering, with an array of drinks many

of the other young bartenders along the strip have never even heard of. His pisco sours (the national drink of Chile and Peru) are phenomenal, as are his Italian negronis (an aperitif made of Campari, gin, and vermouth). All drinks come as a regular or ‘perfect’ cocktail. When asked what the ‘perfect’ cocktail is, Show grins and says that he uses the upper echelon brands of imported bottles (as in Tanqueray gin instead of Gilbey’s). Of course the perfect cocktails are twice the price of the regular blends, but still at half of what you’d pay in a bar on Thonglor, so if the alcohol moves you…. In addition to the inexpensive drinks, the atmosphere in the VW bar world is pretty chilled out. Yes, you sweat a bit more as there certainly isn’t any airconditioning, but at this time of year, the outdoor temperatures are actually pretty nice. For some reason, people seem to be friendlier too. On every one of my mobile bar visits, I’ve struck up nice conversations with the clientele around me. Maybe it’s the proximity of sitting outdoors next to other drinkers, maybe it is just the more relaxed street vibe, or maybe it’s one too many pisco sours. No sense in looking for a reason though. Now if I can only get a few of these mobile bars to start driving down my soi and setting up shop a few nights a week.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS By Voicu Mihnea Simandan

displayed at the top of the roof, thus certifying the great importance that the temple has been given since its opening. Even before you walk through the front gates, you’ll notice a giant HeavenEarth pole towering over the surrounding countryside. Located inside the courtyards, this pole soars into the sky, symbolically connecting our world with that of the gods. Painted in bright red, the pole has seven dragons of different colors slithering up to the top. The amount of detail on each and every dragon is amazing, with claws, whiskers and fangs clearly distinguishable even from a distance. It is not surprising that the architects specifically chose seven dragons to decorate the Heaven-Earth pole, because the Chinese character for number seven sounds similar to the Chinese word for ‘arise,’ thus neatly symbolizing the connection between earth and heaven, where worshippers hope their prayers will rise. As you walk through the temple compound, you’re once again bombarded with bright red and gold decorations that cover all the buildings of the courtyard. By the side of each gate, there are two identical shrines, supported by eight pillars on an octagonal base covered in marble with a pagoda-like, five-tier roof. Again, Chinese numerology comes into place, and as most people come to these shrines to pray for wealth, it is thus not surprising that the Chinese word for the number eight sounds similar to the word for ‘prosper’ or even ‘fortune’ in some Chinese regional dialects. The ceiling of each shrine is decorated in skyblue colors with different Chinese religious symbols, while huge chandeliers illuminate the statues at night. Between the two shrines, facing the main building, there’s a censer made of bronze with a three-tiered roof and a small ladder leading up to the edge of its round bowl. Here, devotees reach inside to place their sticks of incense in the sand-filled receptacle. Facing the censer are four smaller bronze receptacles where one can place candles and light their incense sticks.

K

nown as Nha Ja Sa Tai Jue Shrine to worshippers of Chinese origin, or Wihan Thep Sathit Phra Kiti Chaloem in Thai, this imposing temple can easily match the architectural sophistication and meticulous details that are on offer at any of the more famous attractions to be found in the Chonburi area. Not as well-known on the tourist trail, the Chinese temple in Ang Sila, a small fishing village on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, has so far been living in the shadows. But times are definitely changing, and more and more tourists, mostly Chinese, now visit Nha Ja Sa Tai Jue Shrine to burn incense and offer prayers. The temple has become a strong religious center in the local community, and its affluence in both worshippers and donations is obvious to those who have frequented the temple in the last few years. Although construction of the main hall was officially finished in 1999, only four years after work had started, anyone visiting the temple agrees that, with such a huge project, this kind of work never really finishes. This is true, especially when one keeps in mind that Wihan Thep Sathit Phra Kiti Chaloem occupies just half of a stretch of land of 12,800 square meters. Although the main building with its four stories is fully decorated and the adjacent buildings in the courtyard are complete, as you stand in the street in front of the temple, you can easily see that construction is well under way on the right-hand side of the temple’s compound. The late Somdet Phra Nyanasamvara, the nineteenth Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, presided over the opening ceremony of the temple, and that event saw the casting of seven Buddha images and the presentation of relics of the Lord Buddha to the temple. To add to the honor, the Supreme Patriarch also bestowed the name of the shrine, which means ‘Home of All the Gods.’ Like most Chinese temples, Nha Ja Sa Tai Jue Shrine is characterized by symmetry, with matching support buildings in the courtyard, as well as two identical front gates which bear the name of the shrine carved in gold over a red background. The name of the temple, in Thai script and Chinese characters, is also carved on a huge marble plaque halfway between the two entry gates. The temple has its own protecting dragons decorating it and Thai royal symbols are

It is difficult to decide which of the buildings and architectural features that make up the courtyard are its centerpiece. The sumptuous architectural designs make any of the buildings facing the main hall equally impressive and important. But, if there’s something that stands out completely from the visual invasion of details that worshippers are bombarded with, then it must be the lotus pond with its numerous water sprinklers, statues of golden fish, and figurines surrounding the main entanglement of dragons in the middle of the pond. The water is always clear, but unlike most Thai temples, there are no fish or turtles swimming in it. For those who are interested in more details about Chinese (and Japanese) temples throughout Asia, I recommend James Baquet’s excellent website – www.thetempleguy.com – which provided the inspiration for this article. Wihan Thep Sathit Phra Kiti Chaloem is located on the road between the Old Market at Ang Sila and Khao Sam Muk monkey hill in Bang Saen, about 5 kilometers from downtown Chonburi. The temple is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, while on Saturdays, it stays open until 6 p.m. and on Sundays until 8 p.m. and entry is free. For more details regarding the time and dates of special religious services and festivals, you can call to 038 398 381.

TREATING JOINT PAIN

beats trying to live with it

T

reatments for painful joints are more effective than ever. Before deciding to grin- andbear-it, get to know what causes painful joints, and discover the treatment advances that are helping patients enjoy a better quality life minus the pain. If your only respite from painful joints comes when you’re asleep, it’s time to stop trying to live with pain and discover the many options for treating it. Joint pain is one of the most common health problems. Many people deal with the pain by trying to minimize it, convincing themselves that pain is a normal part of older life that strong-willed people learn to tolerate. Over time, you make adjustments to deal with the pain until it’s all part of your daily routine. Activities that you once enjoyed are now considered pain triggers, so you cut back on activities, you exercise less (or stop altogether). Before long, tolerating the pain takes priority, and active living is a part of your past. The story may sound very familiar, but it doesn’t have to become your story. To understand what causes joint pain and how it can be treated, Better Health turned
to Dr. Wasin Kulsomboon, a specialist in rehabilitation medicine at Bumrungrad who has spent many years helping patients re-discover pain-free living.

responds to treatment. “Earlier medical attention is very important for the long term health of the joint,” notes Dr. Wasin.“When a joint is painful and inflamed, many people decide to ‘wait-and-hope’ for the problem to clear up on its own without consulting a doctor. This can be a dangerous strategy, because it doesn’t address the cause of the pain.”

Obesity’s impact Dr. Wasin notes that a growing number of younger adults are experiencing painful joints caused by obesity-related osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis results from cartilage being damaged or chipped away from the joint as it struggles to support the excess weight. As cartilage gets progressively thinner, joints become less and less mobile. “For patients with joint pain and inflammation, doctors typically begin the diagnostic process with a review of the patient’s medical history and a physical examination,” Dr. Wasin explains.“Lab tests and other diagnostic tools are also available to confirm the diagnosis.” For obesity-related osteoarthritis, doctors typically consider a combination of medical treatments and lifestyle changes aimed at promoting weight loss, which by itself can relieve pain by reducing the stress placed on joints. Along with recommendations for nutrition and exercise, patients may be prescribed pain relievers, injections or antibiotics to treat an underlying condition that’s contributing to the pain. Many types of joint pain respond well to physical therapy and rehabilitation, sometimes in conjunction with braces or other devices that help support joints. “In more severe cases that don’t respond sufficiently to non-surgical treatments,” Dr. Wasin explains, “there are a number of surgical options that are effective for relieving joint pain.”

After surgery

Patients requiring surgery have plenty of reason for optimism. Thanks to advances in technology and Why it’s painful improved techniques, today’s generation of joint Aging and joint degeneration (i.e. wear-and-tear) surgery causes much less physical trauma than play a role in a number of painful joint conditions. before, and recovery times are much shorter. “PostBut oftentimes the blame is misplaced; according to surgery rehabilitation can usually begin very soon Dr. Wasin, the majority of conditions that cause joint after surgery,” says Dr. Wasin. “This helps restore flexpain don’t involve aging or wear-and-tear.“Joint pain ibility to joints and strengthens peripheral muscles. usually results from inflammation of the joint – a con- For patients who undergo knee or hip replacement dition known generally as arthritis,” surgery, it’s normal for rehabilitation to begin just 24 hours after surgery.” Dr. Wasin says. “But arthritis is a very broad term; a single joint is made up of numerous bones and non- According to Dr. Wasin, the following post-surgery bone components such as cartilage, tendons and guidelines are commonly applied to patients underarticular discs. the starting position. Do 5 to 10 repetitions for each leg 2 or 3 times per day, as directed by your doctor. Exercises targeting leg muscles are also beneficial. For example, lie on your back, then slowly raise your foot upward, then back down.To target knee muscles: Place a support pillow under the ankles, then tighten your knee muscles and hold for several seconds. Alleviate pain. Post-surgery pain can cause patients to stop exercising their joints, which slows the progress of rehabilitation. Try applying a cold pack to the painful area for 20 minutes, 3 to 4 times a day. Your doctor may also prescribe pain relief medication. Protect a new joint. Joint replacement surgery can make a tremendous difference in one’s quality of life, but the artificial joint is not the same as a natural joint. Keep expectations realistic and stay mindful about the limitations of replacement joints. Treating the joint with extra care and taking sensible precautions will help extend the life of the replacement joint. Avoid damaging activities such as squatting, running up and down stairs, sitting on the floor or sitting with legs bent back to one side. Joint pain can take all the pleasure out of everyday living. Trying to tolerate it is often the first step toward becoming more and more dependent upon others. More and better treatments are providing relief for painful joints – all the more reason to talk to your doctor about trading in the pain for a better quality of life.

WHAT’S CAUSING YOUR JOINT PAIN?

There are plenty of possible causes of painful joints, including the following: • Osteoarthritis • Injury to the joint or surrounding tissue • Rheumatoid arthritis • Gout • Systemic lupus erythematosus • Psoriatic arthritis • Infection in a bone or joint

SHHH… A QUIET PARADISE By Dave Stamboulis

W

hen looking for tropical island escapes, Sri Lanka is often left out. Perhaps this isn’t so surprising, as the gem in the Indian Ocean suffered from a thirty-year civil war that killed thousands, not to mention having been completely devastated by the Boxing Day tsunami of 2004, which also killed and displaced huge numbers of victims. The daily headlines out of the beautiful island became so grim that it completely fell off the tourist radar. However, those days are far gone, and the new Sri Lanka has emerged as one of the best spots to spend a holiday, offering a multitude of attractions at a very affordable price with far less of the tourist hordes that normally overcrowd the Southeast Asian trail. On my most recent visit to Sri Lanka, I came away feeling like I was in a land of delightful innocence. On Mirissa Beach, a strip of golden sand that rivals most spots in the Gulf of Thailand, I wandered into a bar to ask how much a beach chair and umbrella would cost for the day. The barman looked at me rather confusedly and said, “Please take it, it is free.” After a few hours of sunbathing, I figured that I at least ought to buy a drink and give the guy some business. It wasn’t that the beach and bar didn’t have customers, but rather that in the aftermath of the war days, tourism is such a newfound and exciting thing, and most folks aren’t out to make a killing, a far cry from what one might encounter these days in, say, Phuket. The country celebrated ‘Visit Sri Lanka Year’ in 2011, and tourist arrivals topped 800,000 in twelve months. If you do the math, that works out to around 2,000 visitors per day. Compare this with the twenty-million-plus that Thailand sees annually and you start to get the picture. Most visitors to Sri Lanka spend their time in the south. The distances are short, the infrastructure is good, and there is a wealth of different experiences to be had. southwestern tip is Galle, the old Dutch colonial port and a city that was built by the Portuguese as a fortress. The fortifications still surround the old town, and one can wander the ramparts overlooking the ocean and atmospheric city walls, which are home to some of Asia’s earliest churches and narrow, cobbled lanes, all now classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Continuing down the coast, one passes small beach settlements like Weligama and Midigama, chilled surfing hangouts for much of the year, but also the home of the unique stilt fishermen, weathered men who climb up on wooden crossbars above the raging surf and sit facing the waves, trying to haul enough of a catch to earn a living. At the eastern end of the southern coast, the roads disappear and one enters Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s real treasures. Yala’s wetlands and monsoon forests are home to the largest wild leopard population in Asia, as well as to herds of wild Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, and a prolific amount of birdlife, ranging from various types of herons and hornbills to colorful bee-eaters and much more. Besides the coast, Sri Lanka features plenty of mountainous hill country, where the temperatures are cool, and the famous colonial tea plantations still churn out some of the best brewing leaves in the world. In mountain towns like Haputale and Ella, one can visit the plantations, worked yearround by ethnic Tamils, even getting up to the awe-inspiring Lipton Seat, the viewpoint at 2,000 meters above sea level, named after tea baron Sir Thomas Lipton, who frequented the fresh air spot during his plantation years. Another spot to call in on here is Adams Peak, also known as Sri Pada, a 2,250-meter peak famed for having a Buddha footprint at the summit. Revered as a holy site by Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, and Christians, pilgrims climb up the 5,300 steep, stone steps each night to watch the sunrise over all of Sri Lanka and make merit for present and future lives. At the heart of the hill country is Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural center and a beautiful jungle-clad town built on slopes around a lake. Bathed in perpetual mist, Kandy is home to the island’s most important cultural and religious treasure, the Temple of the Tooth. Said to contain a tooth of the Buddha (which is encased in a jeweled casket inside of a shrine), the sacred tooth is only brought out once a year during the wild Esala Perahera Festival. The rest of the time, visitors must cross the moat surrounding the white temple, where they make their way through the palatial interior and stand in long lines to pay homage to the relic, giving offerings of lotus and frangipani bouquets, money, and other gifts of merit. The famed Kandy drummers open and close the daily temple puja offerings with raucous drumming and dancing sessions. Sri Lanka is known as the ‘teardrop,’ due to its shape, looking like a tear that has fallen from the face of neighboring India. However, these days, the only tears you will be shedding on this magical island are ones of sheer joy. Get to this island paradise now before the secret gets out.

By The Way Stay. For something completely unique, spend a night in Kandy at Helga’s Folly (www.helgasfolly.com), an imaginatively designed and wildly kitsch filled hotel that has entertained everyone from Gandhi to Laurence Olivier (not to mention having a song written about it by the Stereophonics). Go. Sri Lankan Airlines (www.srilankan.com) and Thai Airways (www.thaiairways.com) both offer daily direct flights from Bangkok to Colombo. Visas are required in advance for going to Sri Lanka, but can be conveniently obtained online (www.eta.gov.lk/slvisa).

SURF TURF By Voicu Mihnea Simandan

come specifically to learn windsurfing with Koh Lanta Watersports, even surfers choosing Krabi rather than famous Bali. Windsurfing is done at Klong Dao beach on Koh Lanta using a variety of boards depending on the wind conditions. “A board with volume is good as the wind can drop quickly. A wave board is good from May to September, and in high season, flat water boards are suitable, the wind is off shore then, and although it can be gusty, high-speed runs can be had by an experienced windsurfer,” Sam explains. Koh Lanta Watersports headquarters are on the beachfront, at Costa Lanta Resort, at the north end of Klong Dao. “As I run a school, most of the boards are suitable for beginners and ‘againers’ – people who used to do the sports long ago, and want to try it again,” says Sam. “Windsurfing is like riding a bicycle – once you know how, then you can continue to do it. I use a unique method of teaching. Firstly, I use a simulator on the beach, then, once the student has gained their balance and is sailing, I will follow them on a stand-up paddleboard, instructing them from this.” Sam has taught hundreds of windsurf neophytes, from a primary school Thai boy to a brain surgeon from Siberia. “Almost all the people who learn with me are on holiday. People from Europe are the most interested, as the sport has always been very popular there. Also, as there are many people from Sweden who stay on the island for a few months over their winter, whole families give windsurfing a try,” Sam notes.

I

n Southeast Asia, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Thailand are considered major powerhouses when it comes to windsurfing, mainly because of their proximities to large bodies of water and decent wind conditions. At the SEA Games in Indonesia in 2011, Thailand’s competitive windsurfers returned home with three gold medals out of the four on offer, plus a silver and a bronze. Other countries in the region, such as Vietnam, have made a name for wind sports because they get high and consistent winds, whereas winds in Thailand are inconsistent and can change rapidly, especially in the south. Although Thailand isn’t a destination for wind sports, it offers tourists a variety of activities to do while on holiday, including windsurfing.

Although you’re at the mercy of two great elements, water and wind, windsurfing is a safe sport. The youngest learner so far has been a six-year-old child who sailed with Sam on the board while the oldest was a 72-year-old pensioner from Sweden. And in assuring that windsurfing is gender-neutral, he asserts: “Women are very good learners and tend to pick up the sport easily.” As the local people on Koh Lanta aren’t really interested in watersports, the percentage of people who windsurf on the island’s beaches are 99% foreigners. “When I first started surfing and windsurfing, the locals were amazed to see it,” says Sam.“The fishermen always have a smile on their faces and wave when out in the bay and you’re passing them on a board.”

Thailand abounds in windsurfing locations, with Pattaya, Krabi, and the islands of Samui and Phuket being the most obvious choices. Among these, Pattaya is traditionally the most popular location for windsurfing because of its suitable wind and its proximity to Bangkok. Pattaya has also established many good watersporting events, so it has a larger windsurfing community, and many watersport schools are based there. Still, for holiday goers who want to escape the madness of Pattaya, Koh Lanta proves to be an ideal place to learn to windsurf. As a national park island, Koh Lanta doesn’t allow motorized watercraft to operate from its beaches so there are no obstacles such as jetskis, banana boats, and parasailing to interrupt windsurfers. In addition, it is a safe environment, because the beaches there are shallow, and there are no rocks to accidently run over. Sam Konstantinou is a 54-year-old watersports instructor who spends his time between Thailand and his home country Australia, living the dream of any beach lover, chilling out in the sun all day long and doing what he likes most. In 2008, he moved to Koh Lanta in Krabi Province where he started Koh Lanta Watersports, a company that specializes in teaching surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing, and kiteboarding. Sam started windsurfing when the sport first started in the 1970s, a time when the masts and booms were made directly from timber. “Windsurfing added to my love of watersports, of which surfing is my passion. Noosa Heads in Australia is a very well-known surf point break and was my home before Thailand,” he says.

Windsurfing is for people who enjoy the sea and want to try something different. Being out in the bay on a good breeze when the water is clear and gliding above the sea-life can be an unforgettable experience. Windsurfing is easier if you have good balance and some upper-body strength, however with the correct technique, you don’t need to be an athlete to try it; you just need to listen to your instructor and really want to do it. On top of that, imagine sailing above turtles, rays, and even the occasional manta ray! Windsurfing equipment isn’t cheap – it can take tens of thousands of baht to set up a complete rig, so lessons are much more affordable in Thailand than Europe. At Koh Lanta Watersports (kohlantawatersports.com), both rental fees and lessons range from 600 baht to 3,000 baht, and a ‘learn to windsurf course’ takes approximately three hours. However, this will be time well spent, as you’ll soon be sailing independently with confidence.

Sam started his company with the intention of offering a new experience to tourists who wanted to try a more challenging physical activity while on holi- If Krabi isn’t on your list of upcoming travels, but you still want to give windsurfday. He had the knowledge and was in the perfect location, so he gave it a try. ing a try, then check out these other sites in Pattaya (www.iwindsurf.asia), Koh Over the years, the company has seen an increasing number of people who Samui (www.samui-windsurf.com) or Phuket (www.phuketwindsurfing.com).

Celebrating 10 years of outstanding achievement at Shrewsbury Anniversaries always offer a good moment to look back and reflect. In 2013 Shrewsbury International School celebrated its 10th Anniversary year and the pride at what has been achieved in just a decade was palpable. One of the highlights of the anniversary year was a production of The Bubble, a musical drama written by John Moore, Director of Music at Shrewsbury’s sister school in the UK, and Peter Fanning, the former Second Master at Shrewsbury School (SSUK) who came to Bangkok to direct. In the audience at the Gala performance were students, parents and staff who all walked through the Shrewsbury International School gate on that first inaugural day in September 2003, as well as members of the Board of Governors. The performance, which showcased the considerable acting talents of the Shrewsbury students, was followed by a cocktail party overlooking the Chao Phraya river. It was a perfect celebration for a school that is already known throughout the region for academic excellence and for providing outstanding opportunities for students to secure places at the world’s leading universities. Another highlight was the 10th Anniversary Last Night of the Proms. Over the years, this unique event, based on the historic concert series at London’s Royal Albert Hall, has become one of the highlights of the Bangkok social calendar. The 2013 concert was a sell-out success with leading members of the British and business community coming together to enjoy a riverside dinner and

programme of music that included music from Haydn, Handel, Coldplay and James Bond! Excellence in the performing arts was matched by fantastic success in the sporting area. Shrewsbury basketballers battled it out against players from all the other leading international schools to be crowned champions three times in the Season 1 finals of BISAC (Bangkok International Schools Athletics Conference). At its heart, of course, Shrewsbury is a proudly academic school and over 10 years has built a formidable reputation for examination success and helping students to secure places at the world’s leading universities. Graduates from Shrewsbury are currently studying at an array of universities including Oxford, Cambridges, UCL and Kings in the UK, and Yale, Harvard, MIT and uPenn in the US as well as other Top 100 colleges in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada. Over the past few months, Shrewsbury, a British curriculum school, has been proud to announce results and success stories that confirm its place at the forefront of South East Asia’s international education. In October, members of Shrewsbury’s 2013 Graduating Class received the news that they had won prestigious Top in Thailand and Top in the World accolades in the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) Outstanding Achiever Awards. These included Cindy Horng, who won the Top in Thailand awards for A Level Economics and English Literature, and is now studying Liberal Arts at Wesleyan College in the US. Golfer Jackie Chulya, who awarded the High Achievement award for

Other award winners include Runn Charksmithanont, who won the Top in the World award in his A Level Art & Design – in 2011 he carried off the same award in his IGCSE award too! Shrewsbury students across the board celebrated an impressive set of A Level results with 77% of exams being awarded the top A*, A or B grades – compared to the UK national average of 53%. Behind the statistics are many individual success stories including that of Boonyaporn (Orr) Chinthammit who achieved 5 A*/A passes (Maths, Further Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Japanese). She is now at Oxford University reading Biochemistry. Another 10 students gained 4 straight A* or A grades passes. Mrs Gillian McCaskey, Shrewsbury’s Head of Careers leading students in their university choices and applications, is one of the staff members who was at the school on the first day back in 2003. She is thrilled with the students’ achievements particularly in this anniversary year. “Our students’ capacity to perform and compete so successfully in the global academic arena is a testament to the learning environment that has built up over the past 10 years as well as their personal drive, interest and enjoyment in the subjects that they have chosen.” Shrewsbury International School We are now accepting applications for entry in August 2014 in Year 7 and Year 12, as well our Early Years programmes.
