Behind By Dave Stamboulis Those of you as old as I am will remember the film Altered States, a sci-fi flick in which William Hurt played a psych professor who used sensory deprivation tanks to reach altered states of consciousness. The film’s popularity amongst a searching-forexperience youth led to the rise of floatation tanks, and when some of them appeared in my neighborhood, I too joined the masses trying out a bit of meditative isolation. Thus, my deep recall got pretty excited recently when I noticed that Bangkok had gotten its first floatation tanks, (one out in Bang Na, the Bangkok Float Center, and the other, Theta State Float, right downtown off Sukhumvit), and I headed down to the Theta State Float Center to see what a current day submerging would feel like.

Floatation tanks have actually been around for quite awhile. Originally known as isolation tanks, they are basically soundproof chambers that are filled with body temperature Epsom salt water, allowing the user to float effortlessly and peacefully without disturbance, giving a meditative and relaxing experience. Additionally, research has shown that float tank experiences combat jet lag, provide pain relief, especially for pregnant women and those with fibromyalgia, help with dispersion of lactic acid buildup, and also help with positive imaging (the New England Patriots, most recent Super Bowl winners, used floatation sessions to focus on “winning” outcomes). I asked Annile Alexander, who runs the Theta Float Center, if the current day pods were still known as sensory deprivation

4 mango metro

JULY 2015

tanks, and he laughed, saying, “These days, they are better called sensory relief tanks, as they are one of the only places people have the chance to get away from cellphones, computers, Facebook, and the harmful stress hormones of the daily urban grind.” Annile went on to say that, in fact, one of the biggest challenges in getting locals to come in and try floating is their fear of what they will do with themselves for an hour without a device or something in their hand to occupy them. He remarks that “several people have even asked if they could bring their iPhone into the tank with them!” Another fear folks have of floating is that they will drown, or perhaps slightly more realistically, that they will get claustrophobic. Rest assured these won’t happen. There is only around 10 inches

of body temperature saline water in the tank, and there is no risk of freezing, boiling, or of submersion. For those who haven’t ever been to the Dead Sea, one could actually read a magazine while laying down, the salt water is so buoyant that the entire upper half of the body stays on the surface the whole time. Additionally, the new state of the age float pods are actually quite spacious once inside, with plenty of headroom, and are easily opened if one ever wants to get out. Those worried about sharing bathwater have little to fear, as not only does the magnesium sulfate rich Epsom salt water kill bacteria, all the water gets filtered three times and passed under filtering UV lamps several times between each float, ensuring maximum cleaning.

There are a few precautions to follow before floating, all of which make obvious sense. Those with open cuts probably shouldn’t float, as the Epsom salt water will make things very painful. The same goes for shaving, probably not a great idea to hit the razor the afternoon of your appointment. It’s also not recommended to eat or drink caffeine right before a float, perhaps just like a massage, as it kind of defeats the purpose. Guests at the float centers are given instructions by the staff before heading into the tanks. After showering, one basically gets into one’s birthday suit, slips into the pod (or larger “room” style tanks with regular doors if one chooses), and closes the hatch. Slipping in a pair of earplugs, the soothing music that initially is played in the tank fades after 5 minutes, and one slowly starts to unwind. There’s a bit of a restless stage at the start of the float, pretty akin to Vipassana meditation, where the “monkey mind” doesn’t want to relax and settle down, and where one might think that the session is going to take forever, but for most people this fades,

and then the real benefits of floating kick in. With no external stimuli, other than the occasional feeling of the body slightly bumping up against the side of the tank as one effortlessly floats, it is quite easy to enter a deep and meditative state. The feeling of relaxation is total and complete, and the feeling of complete weightlessness is about as close as most folks will ever come to heading into space without becoming an astronaut. When the music came on during my stint (signifying my time was up), it simultaneously felt like I’d only been laying there for 5 minutes, while at the same time feeling like I’d emerged from some extended Rip Van Winkle-like eternal sleep, which Alexander says is a fairly common experience, as one has entered the “theta state,” where right and left brain synchronize in a deep meditative experience. At both Theta Float Center and Bangkok Float, there’s a pre- and post-float lounge for floaters to relax in after getting dressed, where hot tea is served, and the staff ask about one’s experience. If other folks are there who have just come from a tank, there can be some interesting discussions and comparisons as well.

In this day of the app, LINE, and more distractions than humankind has ever known, it’s a pretty rare situation to spend an hour or 90 minutes alone with oneself in complete peace, silence, and being totally unencumbered. Even doing sitting meditation, the weight of one’s body still requires effort to hold up, whereas in a floatation tank, this is completely gone. While Bangkok might seem like the most diametrically opposed place to a float pod, it’s also probably the most needed place for one, and I’d recommend getting down here for a session soon. Wanderings

Pak Chong & Khao Yai By Voicu Mihnea Simandan If you ask anyone in Thailand, be they locals or expats or tourists, what their favorite destination in the Land of Smiles is, you’re most likely to get Khao Yai in the top five, next to Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and some resort town on the Eastern Coast. Actually, many people dream of having a house in Bangkok, an apartment in Pattaya, and an estate in Khao Yai. This isn’t surprising at all, as Khao Yai is only a three-hour drive north of Bangkok and the area has breathtaking scenery. But even if you don’t own any properties, you can still enjoy the mountains of Khao Yai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Thai national park, as there are plenty of affordable resorts to stay at, while buses and vans make regular daily round trips.

take in the scenery. Most of the main roads are in very good condition, winding up and down the mountain valleys. There are also plenty of mom-and-pop shops by the side of the roads where you can stop to buy a drink and watch the world go by. But, beware of careless drivers who like to overtake any car that’s in front of them and pay even more attention if you’re a cyclist (in which case, extra lights and reflective spots might save your life).

Unfortunately, Khao Yai has become way too popular with local and international tourists, and this can be seen in the huge plots of land that have been cleared of their former lush vegetation to make space for new resorts or personal mansions. The frequent signs by the roadside advertising new projects are a sad reminder that slowly, but surely, what made Khao Yai so popular can easily become its destroyer.

Since most people don’t like to travel without at least having a rough itinerary, here are seven places of interest that are worth exploring in the Khao Yai region. The selection aims at satisfying both tourists traveling solo or with their friends and also big and small families that have to please more than just one whim. All of these attractions are located on or in the vicinity of Mittraphap Road in Pak Chong District, between national roads no. 167 and 144, both of which lead to Khao Yai National Park.

One of the most pleasant things to do outside the Khao Yai National Park, which has an excellent system of trails, is to drive around in a car or on a motorbike and just

Compared to other parts of Thailand, the temperature high up in the mountains of Khao Yai is quite cool, with a yearly average of 23ºC. Bottom line, if you’re looking for a place to escape the pollution common to so many major Thai cities, Khao Yai in Nakhon Ratchasima can make a good getaway, but make sure your ecological footprint is as light as possible.

MANGO NIGHTS Sailing the City Sea

John Will Sail is best known to Bangkok audiences as the impossibly handsome firebrand at the front of the city’s most bombastic punk rock band, the Sangsom Massacre. In the future, he may become equally well known for a mellower, more sensitive side, as evinced by his first solo album The City Sea, which will be released this month. Sail admits that he is, at heart, an out-and-out rocker. “I was inspired by Europe’s The Final Countdown when I was just five years old,” he admits. “At 12, I was playing in a band with school friends, doing original songs in the vein of Silver Chair and Nirvana. Then got into skater punk in the late ’90s, Pennywise and Fat Records albums. When I was old enough to drink, I got into hardcore and eventually metal and metalcore. These heavier styles of music have dominated the last twenty or so years.” Those influences can be clearly heard in the Sangsom Massacre’s music. But his new solo album perhaps owes a little more to his parent’s tastes and a sense of mellowing that has come from his life as an expatriate in Bangkok. “My influences come from all over the place, going back to my roots listening to my dad’s Si

mon and Garfunkel and Cat Stevens albums. An artist in the same genre who has influenced me greatly in the past year or so has been Chasing Ghosts, a solo folk-punk artist from Australia. He has such a captivating energy and amazing voice. I was getting sick of mainstream songwriters you hear such as Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, Adam Levine, Ed Sheehan, as they all have such girly pop tracks.” “So it was a breath of fresh air when I heard Chasing Ghosts. There is real masculinity in his voice and themes. His lyrics are simple, yet deep. Something men can relate to. How many men sit around and talk about love? We talk about heartbreak, maybe loneliness, we share good times and bad, but singing in some whiny voice for a girl? It just never inspired me. It made me think that I had to express myself my own way.” And hence his new album. Sail says the City Sea concept for the album is semi-autobiographical but attempts to relate to everyone’s lives in large metropolises like Bangkok. “Cities are our homes, and these tracks try to capture its depth and size, its charms and curses, its beastlike nature. I wrote these tracks for those of us who reside in this ocean of senses. Yet like all cities, there are always contradictions. Some people

are trapped and have limitations on their freedom, and often we have all felt this in the places we call home, no matter how large and open these places they are.” A notable aspect to the new album is its use of sea metaphors such as wind, water, sails, and references to maritime lore. “I think the feeling of sea is synonymous with travel. For thousands of years, our ancestors travelled by ship, and I believe this connection of the sea runs deep in many of us. Travelling is one of my passions, and I hoped to capture this in the songs,” he says. Fittingly, the album departs from John’s previous punk rock lexicon in favor of acoustic guitar, violin, ukulele, and even harmonica. There is even the touch of the sea shanty about some of the tracks. “When I play in a heavier band, I come alive physically, it’s all rock-’n’-roll energy. When I sing my own acoustic folk songs on stage, my heart is the thing that comes to life. The themes are different. In hardcore bands, it’s about anger or unity. The City Sea is more about experiences. My stories and songs are developed as I travel, as I grow. Some songs are about lessons learned, lost love, family.”

MANGO NIGHTS

Wasabi Bytes Aussie Grahame Wasabi of Bangkok’s electronic music group, Wasabi Bytes, sits down with Mango Metro to talk a bit about the group, the single, and the future. How did Wasabi Bytes come about? Grahame Wasabi: Wasabi Bytes is effectively a reflection and expression of my musical influences when I was a teenager. I loved electronic music, which of course was quite mainstream in those days, as only the most successful artists such as Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush and Trevor Horn could put down the 20,000-pound price tags for Fairlight and Synclavier computers. As that decade came to a close, the DIY thing took over: house music made by DJs and then, eventually, software-based digital music workstations. Wasabi harnesses all those concepts and tries to present them in a live context.

How would you describe your music? GW: It is electronic dance music but with enough liberal use of minor keys and conventional songwriting arrangements that it cannot be classed as commercial pop. Most of our tracks fit into the house category, but we veer off into hip-hop, techno and even ambient at times. Live, we play with Kop Wasabi, our percussionist, who adds an array of tribal, electronic, rock and Indian kit sounds, and Tommy Wasabi, our guitarist who Why does Wasabi play live when most elec- adds a touch of the Roger Waters to us. tronic music is played by DJs or over the net? GW: When I was part of the Aussie electronic Greatest successes and failures? music scene in the early ’90s, there was some re- GW: Well our two 2014 singles, “Rage of the Masistance from DJs to homegrown product, so the chine” and “Deep Inside,” mustered over a million best way for artists to get heard was to play live online streams, so that was probably the making in the rock pub context. I still think it is exciting to of us. “Deep Inside” got airplay on radio stations go and see electronic music in a live gig environ- in places such as San Francisco, Philadelphia ment, and I especially enjoy playing live with rock and Rome, so that was pleasing. It is also really bands and other types of acts, as I like presenting nice that we are getting recognition in Bangkok. our sounds to the wider world. We’ve had some Friends tell me that they hear us being played great gigs in the past couple of years playing on in-house mix CDs in bars and eateries across with the likes of Das Fluff, Blue Hawaii and Uni- town, which is great. As far as failures, probably corn Domination from overseas, as well as some our worst experience was playing at a rock festiclass international DJs such as Basement Freaks val in Korat. The venue was a real mud hut used and Afrika Islam. Basement Freaks even slapped by the local scouts, and the thud of our kick drum on a bass and joined us for half an hour on stage! covered us with a shower of dirt from the ceiling

while we were on stage! There’s a new single? “Rising in August” is actually a four-year-old song we released on our 2012 album Occidental. It was really mellow and smooth in its original incarnation – a house track with a big Teutonic bass line and operatic vocals. For our recent dance remix album Greatest Bits, we had another look at it, changed the vocals, fuzzed up the bass and made it a dirtier beast. We then asked Basement Freaks for a remix, and he took it back to where it came from and more, making it into a more mellow lounge style with real bass and guitar. Future plans? GW: Wasabi is currently writing music with the mysterious German DJ Mr X, also known as Afrika Islam and Charlie Funk. The process is simple: We start writing material and send it to him to finish, and he starts his material and sends it to us. We hope to get an album and single out by the end of the year or early next year. We’d also like to do some more remixes for our favorite bands in Bangkok and maybe even do a few pop songs with some of our favorite rock and folk singers. Make ’em electronic and sexy, as it were!

Roadhouse Barbecue 942/1 Rama IV Road / Surawongse 02 636-8690 www.roadhousebarbecue.com While barbecue and seafood grill joints have been popping up like mushrooms lately, there’s one American barbecue classic that’s been satisfying on- and offthe-bone meat lovers for nine years now. The place is notable for having a large space with even larger furnishings. All the wooden tables, wooden chairs, and even the wooden menus are huge – spread over three floors, each with its own vibe. The first floor tends to attract couples, families, and some business lunches and dinners often with country and older pop songs or sometimes even live guitar-playing singers, the second floor seems to be used more for bigger events, and finally, the top floor is a full-on sports bar with lots of TVs and games like pool, darts, shuffle board, foosball, and video golf all with a digital jukebox serving up lively tunes in the background. If you’re looking for meat, this is your place. Lots of chicken, beef, and pork abound along with a few lamb and fish dishes and several sandwiches, burgers and appetizer options. The focus at Roadhouse is most definitely wood-smoked barbecue, and it is good. Highlights of these include the pork ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket. On the grilled side, the steak always delivers, the sausages are tasty, and most recently discovered, the lamb chops are divine. The sides are what you would often find at an American picnic with corn, spinach, potatoes, and creamy vegetable salads. Some appetizer favorites include the potato skins, the huge battered onion rings, the new and popular flatbread pizzas, Caesar salad, the delicious and hearty

steak chili, and a real must-repeat favorite of this review, the red pepper and tomato soup that comes with some bites of grilled cheese sandwich made with three cheeses. The sandwiches and burgers are tasty and good for lighter bites than the hearty meat extravaganzas. To wrap things up, there are a handful of desserts – personal favorites are the cheesecake, chocolate brownie with ice cream, and the quite-tart lime pie. Now, two more things to note about Roadhouse. First off is the beer. Roadhouse might even have a menu of beer as much or more extensive than the food menu. Below ice-cold draft systems with standards, imports, and more recently craft beers on tap; a lengthy list of craft beer bottles; and now even a couple of fridges right at the door filled with craft beers that can be bought for in or out of the establishment. Your thirsts should definitely be quenched here.

Finally, you couldn’t mention Roadhouse without talking about (1) sports events like the EPL or NFL/NBA broadcasts upstairs and (2) their Monday nights with Buy 10/Get 10 buffalo chicken wing (delicious fried chicken wings with a spicy and vinegar-y taste tempered with a blue cheese dip) nights. Both are quite popular and bring in big crowds to what our youngsters have dubbed “the giant restaurant”. Roadhouse is a staple for us with a lot of good fare and good fun (especially in the sports bar).

While most of that time was spent at Washington Square (that land is now destined to become the next shopping mecca EmSphere to complete the EmDistrict trifecta), the last couple of years have been in the family’s renovated shophouses on Sukhumvit 63 near MK Gold, easily walkable from the BTS Ekamai station, and which includes a hotel that many don’t even know sits on the top floors. The atmosphere could easily fit in well in The Big Easy (New Orleans, Louisiana in the U.S.) with jazz music playing all the time; brass, wood, and glass highlights; and Bourbon Street knick-knacks hanging all over. The place is busy every night with expats and, a bit of a change from the last location, many more Thais from the neighborhood, all enjoying the U.S. fare and extensive wine selection.

lamari, the smoked chicken wings, and a Caesar salad. There’s lengthy kids and Thai food menus to take care of those tastes too. The desserts are all nice but personal highlights include the cheesecake, chocolate brownie with ice cream, carrot cake, and one that I’m betting most readers will have never had before, the delicious banana foster that includes banana liqueur and rum. Lastly, it would be a disservice not to mention the daily specials, but the main event has to be Tuesday night’s Mexican buffet. It’s very affordable at 325

The choices can be daunting, when at least two thick photo menu books and special menu sheets are presented upon settling in to your table – one for drinks alone and the other just for the food, from starters to mains to specials to desserts. The drinks include a wide array of soft and hard drinks, including some signature cocktails commonly found on the original Bourbon Street in the U.S., many spirits available including bottle service, and the many pages of wines available. You’ll even find three kinds of absinthe on hand. The appetizers start you out with a variety of seafood dishes, chicken, fried finger foods, and soups and salads. Then on to the mains, which are gathered into meat groups, and include a plethora of chops, cutlets and fillets; pastas and pizzas; house-made sausages; sandwiches and burgers; steaks and other prime meats; and spread throughout and even into its own category, you’ll find a lot of options for food found in the Louisiana region – it’s a cuisine known for zest, spice, and kick and quite unique to other tastes.

baht and has a huge spread of Mexican choices to fit all desires. It is very popular, meaning a very full house. It’s highly recommended to get there early in the evening, if possible. They do have two floors of dining available, so that helps. The long and short of it is that Bourbon Street has been a very popular destination for the last three decades, and even more so since their move to Ekamai. If you can’t find several highlights from the menu, you’re either a bit too picky… or maybe a bit too overwhelmed with the choices – close your eyes, point, and enjoy, then come back and try something new.

WHY CPR HELPS TO SAVE LIVES

By Laurie Coyler-Charusorn, Emergency First Response Instructor and Business Unit Director, and Dr. Preecha Laohakunakorn, Pediatric Cardiologist at the Children Center, Bumrungrad Hospital

CPR is one of the most important skills you can learn to save a life. According to the American Heart Association, performing CPR doubles or even triples a person’s chance of survival in sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). In the United States, only 32% of SCA victims receive CPR by a bystander if outside a hospital. Consequently, knowing CPR can help prevent an unnecessary death from cardiac arrest. Most people have been exposed to CPR while watching movies or TV shows; however, many are intimidated to actually try it in an emergency situation for fear of making someone worse. Here is something for you to remember: you cannot make a person who would otherwise be dead “more dead.” It is much better to do something, even if your technique is flawed, than to do nothing, and forever wonder if your assistance would have made a difference. There are many people, some with CPR training, who do not understand what CPR actually is or why it can help. So, what is CPR? • CPR stands for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, or in layman’s terms: • Cardio = Heart • Pulmonary = Lungs • Resuscitation = Revival or ‘bring back from ap parent death’

5. Drug overdose 6. Electric Shock

Quick tip: A heart attack is not the same thing as sudden cardiac arrest. A heart attack is when the heart’s own blood supply is blocked. This can lead to sudden cardiac arrest where the heart starts to CPR is a cycle of chest compressions and rescue beat erratically or stops beating altogether. breaths to manually pump oxygenated blood throughout the body. als to regain a patient’s normal heart rhythm, or back to ‘auto pilot’ mode. Quick Tip: Make sure you know the number for emergency medical services in your area: in Thailand, that number is 1669. It is also a good idea to program the Emergency Room Numbers for the hospitals near your home and workplace into your phone. Bumrungrad International Hospital’s 24 hour Emergency Room contact is +66 (0) 2667 2999. If there is an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) available, use it as soon as possible. It is significantly more effective than CPR to restore normal rhythm. Your heart uses electrical impulses to create contractions; however, during cardiac arrest, the heart is often in fibrillation, which means that it is beating erratically and inefficiently. A defibrillator sends a shock to the heart, stunning or stopping it momentarily, so that it can hopefully resume its normal rhythm. AEDs are simple to use and designed to be intuitive. The rescuer will need to apply the pads as pictured to the person’s bare chest and may need to press a button to deliver the shock. Some AEDs will deliver a shock automatically and some even give instructions on how to perform CPR in between shocks. The most important thing is not to touch the patient while the shock is being delivered. AEDs will not give a shock to someone who does not need it.

How to perform CPR

It is highly recommended to take an accredited course for CPR and AED training at least every 1-2 years. Motor skills are best learned by practice:

the best way to really remember how to perform CPR is to do it! You will learn where, how hard, and how fast to push for chest compressions. You will learn how to open an airway or provide rescue breaths. CPR doesn’t need to be intimidating once you have the opportunity to practice and get feedback from an instructor. Becoming CPR and AED certified gives you the skills and confidence you need to be an effective emergency responder. First, take a breath and stay calm. When faced with a medical emergency, it is difficult not to panic, even if you’ve had training. Considering that 88% of cardiac arrest cases occur at home, you are most likely to use CPR on a family member or loved one. This can cause many people to make mistakes or ‘freeze up.’ The best way to overcome this instinct is to first stop whatever it is that you are doing. Think about what you have been trained to do through a class or even remember the information in this article. Assess the area to make sure the environment is safe for you to assist. Take a deep breath, and then act. If you see someone suddenly collapse or come across someone who appears unconscious, gently shake and tap them, asking “Are you okay?” If the person is unresponsive, unconscious and not • Perform 30 chest compressions. This technique still allows blood to circulate and is most appropriate for untrained bystanders or for rescuers who do not feel comfortable in providing rescue breaths. A medical emergency can happen anywhere, at any time, and to anyone so it is so important to know what do to avoid an unnecessary death. Because stepping in to help can double or triple a person’s chance of survival, learning CPR is certainly a valuable skill to learn.
