usually travel pretty hard. Bad buses, bad beds, bad food, not to mention that far too many of my ‘holidays’ seem to involve slogging mounds of camera gear and other equipment up mountainsides, or sweating buckets during tropical photo shoots as opposed to relaxing by a pool with a good cocktail in hand. Granted, most of this is by choice, but it wasn’t until recently that I discovered that relieving stress from too many hours at the computer via spending some great downtime in a really nice resort actually does qualify as a great vacation. Surprisingly, some of the best get-away-from-it-all pampering vacations in Thailand can be had in Isaan.

Isaan? When most Bangkokians think of escaping the urban jungle, they immediately head for the sea. Emerald water, island life, watching the waves roll in. Yet a sad, but true, fact is that most of our beloved islands here in Thailand have become so built up that island life often resembles life at home, complete with overcrowded resorts, packed beaches, and other than one’s overpriced room, not too much chance to chill out at all, not to mention the same lines, crowds, and prices for the flights to get there. Those not partial to sun and sand head up to Chiang Mai, but that also gets pretty crowded these days, not to mention smoggier and more polluted than Bangkok at this time of the year. In the meantime, Isaan flies under the radar, mainly known as ‘upcountry,’ with all sorts of stereotypes abounding about farms, buffaloes, sticky rice, and not much else keeping most of the city slickers away. Which actually is just fine for keeping the crowds at bay and making gems like Supanniga Home and the Sedhapura by Tohsang all the more perfect when looking for a real city escape. One would never expect to find one of Thailand’s most luxurious hideaways in downtown Khon Kaen, but Supanniga Home is an escapist’s fantasy, an idyllic retreat set on sixteen acres of private

His mom designed the beautiful gardens that shelter Supanniga Home from the city, and the intimate private villas feel more like an architect’s dream home as opposed to a resort. Supanniga, which is actually only five minutes out of downtown, lies hidden up a driveway and is so drenched in greenery and quiet that it is easy to forget that the lively night market of Khon Kaen is just minutes away. We live in a world where all aspects of our lives are dependent on an outside authority figure enforcing established rules. From school life and parenting to politics and sports, there’s always a teacher, a parent, a judge, or a referee who tells the ‘players’ what’s right and what’s wrong, who’s to be blamed and who should walk free, whose turn comes next and who should take the penalty.

Still, it’s nice to see that there are some communities of sport lovers who take matters into their own hands and play games that don’t require referees to decide who scored or who made an illegal move. Meet Soidawgz Bangkok, an enthusiastic group of both foreigners and Thais who all love outdoor games and who, over the years, have managed to establish a strong base for the sport of Ultimate or, as it is more widely known as, Frisbee. The name ‘Soidawgz’ is a play on pronouncing the two words ‘soi dogs’ – those dogs that live wild and play hard in the streets! Hence, the logo of their website page, which is a dog running fast with a flying disc held between its teeth. Ultimate Frisbee is considered to be a ‘free-spirit sport,’ as it is self-refereed and relies on the players’ honesty and sportsmanship to take all the decisions that partake in the smooth flowing of

A long-time member of Soidawgz Bangkok, the local branch of a worldwide movement of Ultimate lovers, is Tri Le, a 41-year-old American who teaches at a school in Nonthaburi. He has been living in Thailand for ten years and has been playing Ultimate Frisbee for as long. Think of soccer, basketball, American football, and netball, all combined into one game. That’s Ultimate for you. The game is played on a field roughly the size of a soccer field with seven players on each side. The aim of the game is to catch the disc in the opposing team’s ‘end zone.’ Players cannot run with the disc in their hands, so once they catch it, they have to stop and then pass it on to their teammates. If the disc is not caught, then the team on the offense turns over the disc and starts playing in defense.

time, require the players to contribute between 1,500 to 2,000 baht, although, apart from playing seven to ten games, they also get a team jersey. A full-day tournament with lunch and non-alcoholic drinks will cost about 400 baht per player. “While the game in the West is more competitive and it is being played at a higher level of skills, games in Thailand are much more relaxed,” Tri says. “Anybody and everybody can play this game! We have high school players to folks who are in their 60s. It’s a great way to get a workout and a chance to meet many fun and good people from all over the world.”

To be played in the intense heat and humidity that is very characteristic to Thailand, Ultimate Frisbee might not be your immediate choice of an outdoor activity. However, it must be remembered that, apart from being great fun, the game also gives its players a good workout. “Ironically, it’s a non-contact sport, but it can be tiring and hard on your body,” Tri notes. “It depends how hard you play. It involves a lot of running and cutting. However, you can go at your own pace, as there are many people at different levels of play. So, you can match up almost evenly on any given point.” Soidawgz has currently 40 to 50 members, but there is also a strong community of Ultimate Frisbee enthusiasts in the north of Thailand too. “In Chiang Mai [chiangmaiultimate.wordpress.com],

Helping parents & kids tackle the challenges of epilepsy Epileptic seizures in children may appear alarming, but they’re not necessarily dangerous. With the proper knowledge, parents can help their kids manage and cope more effectively with the challenges of childhood epilepsy. Witnessing a seizure’s dramatic symptoms – body stiffness, frenetic muscle spasms, muscle convulsions – can be a frightening experience, especially when the victim is a young child. Though the desire to help is borne of sheer goodwill, intervening during a seizure may do far more harm than good. We address here the need for correct knowledge and understanding to make a positive difference in the lives of children with epilepsy.

Diagnostic process

“When a child who has a history of first seizures is brought to the hospital, an epilepsy diagnosis isn’t automatically assumed,” notes Dr. Prinyarat. “A thorough diagnostic check-up must be done to accurately determine what’s causing the seizures. Seizures may be the result of imbalances in glucose or electrolytes, or they may be the result of certain infections such as meningitis or encephalitis, in which case a cere-brospinal fluid test may be required together with a CT or MRI scan of the brain.

Why seizures happen

“Seizures are caused by a disruption in neural electrical transmission in the brain, which can lead to altered mental status and loss of physical control,” says Dr. Prinyarat Burusnukul, a U.S.board-certified pediatric neurologist at Bumrungrad. “Epilepsy refers to at least two episodes of unprovoked seizures (i.e., those not resulting from fever, infection or another known treatable cause). It’s a popular misconception that having a seizure is the same as having epilepsy because the two terms are often mentioned together.”

Help or harm

It’s a normal human reaction to want to help a child in the throes of an epileptic seizure. “Normally a brief seizure itself is not a dangerous event,” notes Dr. Charcrin Nabangchang, a U.S.board-certified pediatric neurologist at Bumrungrad with extensive experience caring for children with epilepsy. “A seizure episode is usually over within a few minutes.”

Absence seizures

Though it’s common for seizures to produce symptoms like convulsions, jerking motions, muscle rigidity, spasms and head-turning, some seizures produce much more subtle symptoms. So-called absence seizures are most common in children between the ages of five and ten. It’s common for these children to have learningrelated difficulties that lead parents to consult their doctor. Absence seizures involve a brief, sudden lapse of consciousness. During an absence seizure, the child can appear to be staring into ‘space’ or having a ‘black out’ lasting a matter of seconds. Many children who experience absence seizures go untreated because teachers and parents are often unaware of what to look for. So it’s helpful to make others aware of this very subtle type of seizure, and keep a watchful eye on your child just to be safe.

“If signs are pointing to epilepsy,” Dr. Prinyarat continues, “the health history of the child and the family plays a vital role in the diagnosis process. We review pregnancy history, birth delivery information, details of the child’s development, school performance and prior medical histories of the child and the family. Doctors also consider conducting brain tests, such as an EEG and MRI, which help classify epilepsy by type, enabling more effective treatment planning.”

“Before deciding on a treatment plan for an epileptic child, other possible correctable seizure provoking factors must be ruled out. Some epileptic seizures may allow for treatment to be put on hold until after the patient undergoes a thorough physical examination.”

Once the seizure has ended, parents are advised to take the child to a doctor as a normal precaution to allow the doctor to monitor the child’s condition and determine if treatment is necessary, particularly for recurring or prolonged seizures. “As I said before, the brief seizure itself is not dangerous,” adds Dr. Charcrin. “However, suffering repeated seizures can have a negative impact on a child in terms of development, socialization and cognitive ability. “Children who suffer seizures repeatedly can end up feeling overly self-conscious about how different they are because of the seizures; they end up isolating themselves from other ‘normal’ children. That puts them at a risk for learning disabilities, behavioral problems and difficulty concentrating in school.” Dangerous seizures are those that last more than five minutes, and those that are accompanied by choking that causes the patient to stop breathing. Both cases can be lifethreatening due to the cut-off of the brain’s oxygen supply. In addition, suffering repeated seizures multiple times a day can turn out to represent a much greater threat that’s more difficult to bring under control. It’s also important to be mindful that seizures can pose significant danger

when they occur during certain activities or situations. Because the seizure causes the patient to experience a loss of awareness of their surroundings, the danger goes up significantly when a seizure begins while the patient is taking a swim or climbing. There are times when doctors recommend ‘watchful waiting’ rather than beginning medical treatment. Despite that, earlier diagnosis of epilepsy can have a major positive impact on a child’s healthy development. “Suffering repeated seizures without any medical intervention can affect the child’s brain development,” Dr. Charcrin cautions, “and seizures can become more severe and less controllable.”

Case-by-case treatment

Before deciding on a treatment plan for an epileptic child, other possible seizure causes must be ruled out before a diagnosis of epilepsy can be confirmed. Dr. Charcrin emphasizes that seizures don’t always require treatment. “Some epileptic seizures may not call for treatment.” Treatment for epileptic seizures is one aspect of the process of managing the condition. Doctors will discuss the full range of issues – diagnosis, nature and type of seizures, medication options and potential side effects, details of the treatment process, seizure precaution and first-aid for seizures. “I usually explain to parents that the purpose of medication is to reduce the chances of future seizures,” Dr. Charcrin says. “Some patients taking medication turn out to be seizure-free, while others still experience them. It truly does vary from one patient to another. For patients on medication who still have seizures, doctors will evaluate the patient’s situation and may recommend adjustments of the medication aimed at better controlling the epilepsy.” Besides seizure-prevention medications, taking steps to avoid seizure triggers is an important element to help prevent future seizures. The most common seizure triggers include fever, lack of sleep, and missing the medication. “Once treatment with epilepsy medication is begun,” Dr. Charcrin explains, “the child needs to be closely and frequently monitored by the doctor – at least once every few months – to check the medication’s efficacy in bringing seizures under control, to look for possible side effects, and to confirm the child’s development is progressing normally.”

Keeping calm

Both doctors agree that it’s very important for parents to remain calm and keep emotions under control when their child is having a seizure. Don’t panic. Lay the child on the floor and turn the child’s face to the side to guard against choking and to prevent their airway from becoming blocked. Avoid putting anything into the child’s mouth while they’re having a seizure, to avoid the risk of a harmful injury. A seizure that ends within a few minutes is typically not a medical emergency. With knowledge and professional care, a child’s seizures can be brought under control and can be eventually cured.

However, the last year has seen an unbelievable renaissance in the Krungthep coffee culture, with a slew of cafe aficionados and bean-roasting experts all making their marks on the city’s java scene. When my coffee friend arrived into town again recently, I decided to embark on a search for the best cup of coffee in the city, but abandoned this after making a few pitstops and realizing that there wasn’t just one definitive knockout cup of caffeine, but rather a whole spectrum of truly excellent blends to try, not to mention a whole new generation of great coffee makers excitedly living their passion, probably ensuring that we won’t be lacking in the cafe department for years to come. Ceresia is a specialty coffee roaster and cafe started by Bret Asavaroengchai and his Venezuelan wife, Lucia Aguilar, and her sister, Marian. The sisters come from a coffee-growing family, and the trio are most astute about the industry and place great importance on paying dues to the farms and farmers that produce the coffee. Ceresia sources their beans from single-origin farms and cooperatives around the world and give meticulous attention to how the beans are grown and processed, stocking seasonal blends from countries ranging from Kenya and Ethiopia in Africa to Columbia and El Salvador in the Americas. Coffee is roasted daily in small batches to maintain its original flavor, and the owners are more than happy to make suggestions and describe the entire coffeemaking process from farm to espresso-maker.

While weekdays are for coffee education only, weekends see the quaint cafe open up to the public, where co-founder and master roaster Korn Sanguankeaw chats with customers, invites them to choose their coffee origin (I went for the Kenya Nyeri Gatugi, recommended as fruity and complex, due to being grown at altitude) and brewing method (pour over, French press, or espresso), and happily shares his coffee obsessions

and faith in the Thai coffee future. Many of the gourmet cafes around Bangkok get their beans from Roots, and one has to be impressed with a Bangkok establishment that has customers pay via an ‘honesty box’, in which one pays what one thinks the coffee and delicious homemade pastries are worth!

Owner Varatt Vichit-Vadakan has everything you could want from a great cafe here: creative and wholesome food, a welcoming space with great ambience and decor, and plenty of single-origin coffees. The highlight for me here is the iced espresso latte, which hails from Varatt’s old café, Ohana, where a barista solved the problem of iced coffee getting diluted from melting ice by using ice cubes made from espresso, meaning the coffee actually gets stronger and colder the further into it you get!

Pacamara

the Thai style coffee is heads above anywhere else in town, and the cafe itself is charming enough that you’ll be tempted to pass a few hours here.

Rocket

Tues.-Sun. 7 a.m.-11 p.m. Another player on the single-origin scene, Rocket not only serves up strong cups of Ethiopian, Brazilian, and Kenyan beans, but they also do a potent “Rocket Fuel” iced espresso. Brunch and home-baked pastry items compliment the drinks, and the homey cafe is an excellent place to while away a morning. The good news is that the gourmet cafe list gets longer and longer as Bangkok gets buzzed over good coffee. Other players worth a stopover include Casa Lapin (one in Thonglor Art Village between sois 17 and 19, and another branch in Sukhumvit 49, opposite Samitivej Hospital), and Gallery Drip Coffee (in the Bangkok Art and Culture Center), whose photographer owners roast, grind, and slow-handdrip every single cup of coffee they serve. They serve some of Thailand’s best blends from Akha country up north, and even have a coffee-table book they’ve done entitled In the Name of Coffee. Here’s to hoping that Bangkok’s Nescafe days are coming to a rapid halt.

ome of the most amazing and inspiring stories of business success do not necessarily come from multi-billionaire business leaders who used their skills and ability to see where there was a market need and put forth a bestselling product – but they can actually come from your next-door neighbors who sacrificed their free time to help others and decided to choose a career that would benefit not only their own pockets, but the pockets of an entire community. Hachaya ‘Oiy’ Tookohplook is one such (extra)ordinary person who has been living and working in the Khlong Toei part of Bangkok all her life.

Oiy is a 36-year-old store manager at Second Chance, a recycling shop that relies solely on donations of second-hand goods. Second Chance first opened its doors in November 2009, and through her friends and co-founders Chris and Jodie MacCartney, she was invited to work parttime in the newly opened store. “The MacCartneys told me their dream of starting a secondhand store, not for profit, but to help improve the quality of life for the slum residents. They thought that some of the skills I had acquired through my previous jobs could be helpful in the store,” Oiy reminisces.

They now also have a handicraft business where they turn some of the extra clothing donations into ‘up-cycled goods’ like purses, skirts, and toys.

The store was opened near Oiy’s house in Rom Klao, a squatter community that is a part of the larger Khlong Toei slum: “Working at Second Chance opened my heart to my neighbors. I felt a real sense of community and belonging among my friends at the store, so eventually I started working here full-time. It’s like a home to me and has changed me.” The motto of the store is ‘Recycle – Reuse – Renew’ because what you think of as junk may help turn someone’s life around. Their logo, the image of an elephant made of recycled furniture, clothing, and other things reflects just that. “We chose the name ‘Second Chance’ because we like to give opportunities to people where doors have closed before. Whether you are a customer who can’t afford a nice piece of furniture, a teenager looking for work, or a foreigner looking to do something positive with the stuff you have accumulated here in Thailand, we try to provide opportunities,” Oiy explains.

“I would say that one of our biggest successes is the enjoyment that our employees get from coming to work each day. Second Chance is a place where we love each other and try to extend that love to other people who need it. For example, we noticed that one of our disabled neighbors was getting too weak to hold up her head. Someone had recently donated a comfortable armchair with headrests, so we were happy to give that straight to her family. with addictions, they can find a place here and we will try to help where we can.” Luckily, in the last year, many people have taken advantage of government housing loans to improve or rebuild their homes. However, there was a large fire in the Rom Klao community in October 2013 that destroyed 68 homes, and the government was able to support the rebuilding process with a grant of 30,000 baht per family. “We helped where we could here at Second Chance,” adds Oiy, “providing new school uniforms and some clothing from our store.” One of the best ways you can help is by sharing this amazing story of survival and revival with your family, friends and neighbors.
