Other exquisitely designed buildings with plenty of history are available to overnight in. A threestory corner shophouse that is an example of the Straits Collection of Chinese architecture, the Campbell House was built in 1903 and now offers boutique lodging in the middle of the heritage zone. Several blocks away, the Eastern and Oriental Hotel has been around for over a century and is an architectural classic, with luminaries such as Rudyard Kipling and Somerset Maugham gracing its rooms over time. Perhaps the best way to experience Penang’s past and present is with a competent guide. Penang Heritage Trust runs excellent walking tours taking in all of the historical buildings and sights. Other must-sees on any itinerary include Kek Lok Si, the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia, which sits above town, giving almost-as-good views as the ones from Penang Hill, which one can reach by funicular to admire the jaw-dropping views of Georgetown and the island below. Although visitors to Penang spend most of their time in Georgetown, there are other spots on the island meriting a look. Batu Ferringhi on the north coast, while not being Phuket, does have some white-sand beaches, and the Penang National Park out in Teluk Bahang offers some great hiking and escape from the crowds.

WONDERS OF PENANG By Dave Stamboulis

P

picturesque place today. Georgetown, the main city on Penang, is full of small backstreets where Chinese shophouses and intricately designed mansions ooze charm amidst the cosmopolitan Chinese, Indian, and Malay melting pot.

Penang, long known as the Pearl of the Orient, was leased to the British in the early 1700s, in return for protection against invading Burmese and Siamese armies. It later became a penal colony for Andaman Island convicts, and then the fundraising headquarters for Chinese Nationalist Sun Yat Sen. Bombed by the Germans in World War I, and then taken over by the Japanese in World War II, it was finally restored to Malaysia in 1957. This multicultural history is showcased in a vibrant and

Much of Georgetown is now a living UNESCO Heritage museum, small enough to explore on foot or via an old fashioned becak (bicycle rickshaw) in order to see the sights. Over on Lebuh Leith, the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is a classic old Chinese merchant’s home, built in the 1880s, featuring Gothic windows, blue indigo dye, and built on Feng Shui principles. Other fine crafted spots to call in on when visiting Georgetown include the Khoo Kongsi Chinese clan house, which is over 200 years old and resembles an emperor’s palace; the Peranakan Mansion, also several hundred years old and featuring traditional Straits craftsmanship; and the imposing Kapitan Keling Mosque, an early 19th Century Moorish mosque built for the Muslim Indian community.

enang certainly doesn’t get the press that Siem Reap’s Angkor Wat or the new tourist darling that is Myanmar receives, which is probably just as well for those making the effort to spend a few days here. It is rather strange, given the island’s proximity to Thailand, ease of access, and no visa requirements, that more visitors don’t make the pilgrimage because Penang offers an amazing combo of beautiful architecture (much of which now houses gorgeous boutique hotels), superlative food (some say the best in Asia), low prices, and even a decent beach thrown into the mix.

Architecture lovers aside, the real reason to come to Penang is to eat. Locals joke that Penangites gain 3-4 kilos each year, as 24-hour munching seems to be de rigeur. The ‘hawker stall’ food courts that are found everywhere teem with local specialties. Dishes like asam laksa are wildly popular; thick rice noodles cooked in a sour-andspicy soup broth laced with tamarind paste. Also famous are Hokkien Mee rice noodles cooked in a stock made of dried prawns, shrimp paste, and lard, served with vegetables and sambal paste. Some of the hawker stalls in Penang have been operating for decades, serving the same thing, and many are quite famous. The cendol (pronounced ‘chendul’) vendor off an alley on Penang Road in Chinatown sets up every afternoon around 1pm and within twenty minutes, has a line down the block… and the shaved ice treats with coconut milk and jelly noodles are gone an hour later. To find all the best vendor stalls and to learn about Penang’s culinary history (as well as how to make some of the dishes), a cooking class and visit to the wet markets with the experts is the way to go. Penang native Nazlina Hussin runs traditional classes at her cooking studio, as well as market visits several times a week.

THE PURE DELIGHT and Sacrifice of Some Actual Original Music Made and Played Right Here in Bangkok (or ‘No Covers Allowed’) By Voicu Mihnea Simandan

S

ome real high-profile concerts have recently been organized in Bangkok, with a wide range of K-Pop bands drawing huge crowds to Rajamangala Stadium, while at Impact Arena, such international stars as Placebo, Pitbull, Justin Bieber, and Pet Shop Boys, to name just a few, have secured Bangkok’s name as the next great destination for mega-concerts. Then we even have huge names like Snoop Dogg and Rihanna who chose Phuket as the location to shoot their next music videos, creating massive (both positive and negative) worldwide exposure for Thailand on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. While this is all nice and beneficial for the already-rich corporations and international artists, the truth is that the genuine local music scene isn’t that vibrant at all. If you enter any drinking or eating establishment with a band on a stage, then all you’ll hear are the same tedious cover songs, with the Eagles’ Hotel California, the Cranberries’ Zombie, and the Scorpions’ You and I being repeated again and again. The truth is that new bands and solo musicians, Thai or foreign, have little choice when it comes to the songs they can play at a gig. When the first thing that the bar manager asks is “Can you play any of the favorites?” (especially the above-mentioned), you’ve got very little room left for any creativity and a small chance to ever be able to expose the audience to your own, original work.

10 mango metro NOVEMBER 2013 Luckily, due to the advancement of technology and the possibility of selling music via online stores these days, musicians in Thailand can continue with their own passion and produce the music that their hearts and talents demand them to. One such person is Shane Wooding, a Bangkok-based musician born in Wales, but who has lived in Thailand for the last fifteen years. Shane went to university in London, and upon graduating with a degree in geology and chemistry, left the UK, never really returning to Wales. He started to work as a geochemist in the field of petroleum, oil, and gas exploration, a job that took him all around the world and eventually led him to Asia. He settled in Thailand where he married, started a family, and in-between the time he had to dedicate to work and his two children, he continued his passion for writing and playing music, which, years later, has translated into two albums: Pure Delight (2010) and Sacrifice (2012). A soft-spoken musician who now has his own home-based recording studio, Shane started playing the acoustic guitar when he was twelve years old without actually learning the notes initially. Like most people who are really into music, he went to different music teachers and institutes, as he wanted to develop his skills in several areas. However, not until he joined a music institute in Malaysia did he learn the basics, such as theory, technique, and repertoire. Referring to the time when he started playing in bands, where he learned to play the electric guitar and follow the moves along with a rock band, Shane admits that “it is much more challenging to perform on your own because you’ve only got yourself to play with and you’ve got to do more things. In a band, if you play rhythm guitar for example, you’re spreading the responsibility to the other members of the band too, while when you’re playing on your own, it’s a much more individual effort.”

here in Thailand, especially if you want to play original music. If you try to do something different from the expected cover songs, there’s very little opportunity for such a band to find a venue around town,” says Shane. The two put together a band, which had many different names, but eventually Crystalyne was agreed upon to be the official choice. When the band produced enough original songs, Shane put together Pure Delight, Crystalyne’s first album, nine songs reflecting the development and evolution of the band. “The problem with Crystalyne was that the band members wandered off and got involved in other activities that took them away from music. Most of them, with the exception of Michael, were in the band just for the enjoyment of playing and were not into songwriting, and so, they could not grow any roots with the band,” says Shane with some disappointment. Pure Delight was recorded in Bangkok at Paradise Production (paradisepi.com) with the help of Nicolai Kehlet, a professional producer, recording engineer, and musician from Denmark. The intention was to capture the essence of the songs Crystalyne had written over the three years they were together between 2007 and 2010. “The songs represent a crystallization of perceptions and emotions that have been in my head for more than two decades,” explains Shane, who wrote the lyrics and played the guitar while also providing the vocals.

Apart from Shane, the band through its evolution included Nipat Supaporn playing the guitar, Michael Embley on drums and bass, Akapol Dilokwattanakul and Kip Oxman on bass, and Yarat Chantaros on drums. Together with Shane, Nicolai Kehlet played guitar, bass, and the keyboards on the album. Unfortunately, the band wrapped up its activity for good in 2011: “They were people like me, with a profession and a family, so the band was always the second, or third, or even the fourth thing that they concentrated on, rather From Malaysia, his work took him to Indonesia than the first,” confesses Shane. The album they and, some years later, to Thailand where, for a left behind has a ’70s and ’80s rock feel to it, as long time, being caught up with work and starting a family, it didn’t allow him much time for music. “These days, I just play by ear, and although I think being able to read notes is important, being able to pick up the guitar and, by just listening, to be able to define the key a song is played in, is a far more important musical skill than reading notes,” Shane declares. “Being able to play by ear is the skill that gives you flexibility in playing with other people.” In 2007, Shane made the conscious decision to try to just go out and play, just as he had for many years in Malaysia and Indonesia, where he had been a member of different bands who performed music in bars, concert halls, and folk clubs. “I put an ad on a forum and a number of people answered, one of them being Michael Embley, a rock-metal drummer and principal at an international school in Bangkok, who was keen on performing our own music, rather than regurgitating cover songs. “It’s just very hard to maintain and stay in a band

most members of the band were, and still remain, fans of rock music. As a young musician, Shane played almost exclusively the acoustic guitar, which you can hear a lot on his second, solo album called Sacrifice. Released in 2012, the nine songs on this album have a distinctive country feeling and were written by Shane, again recorded at Paradise Production. Together with Shane, Nicolai Kehlet played guitar, bass, keyboard, and drums, and also performed backing vocal duties on the album. There’s a lot of acoustic guitar work in all the songs, which is what Shane Wooding had favored in his youth and in his twenties. “They are songs about skeletons in the cupboard, relationships that went to waste, social injustice, getting lost, and trying to understand the important things in life that really matter,” wrote Shane on the album’s back cover. Although his long-time music partner, Michael Embley, had moved to China and later on to Dubai in the UAE, they’ve managed to keep in touch and are now recording a new album called Sand and Water. Describing the concept of this new project, which they expect to finish sometime next year, Shane explains that “the album is about how pointless life is and how, one day, all will turn to sand and water.” Apart from working on his own music, Shane Wooding is using his home studio to gear up, encourage, and motivate young musicians. Blue Butterfly is a band made up of eleven- and twelve-year-old Thai and foreign school children that gather at Shane’s house every Saturday to hone their music skills and work on their own recordings. The songs from Pure Delight and Sacrifice are available via the indie online music store CD Baby and the iTunes Store at only US$0.99 each. You can download them from his store page at www.cdbaby.com/Artist/ShaneWooding or contact Shane for CD versions via email to shanewooding@yahoo.co.uk.

SHOPHOUSE

CINEMA By Dave Stamboulis

M

film industry and international film festivals here, Spurrier wanted to have a space where people in the local film community could hang out, share ideas, and talk shop, perhaps along the lines of an FCC Club for cinema aficionados.

William Friese-Greene was a British photographer and inventor who is considered to be one of the pioneers of the motion picture industry, creating a chronophotographic camera and an additive color process to film, and it is in his honor that the club is named. The Friese-Greene Club was opened by Paul Spurrier, a former British child actor and writer-director of the well-known Thai ghost film P (2005), as well as the first foreign Director of Photography of a well-known Thai TV series. Having been involved for years with the Thai

Spurrier ended up turning his beautiful old shophouse, a former tailor’s workshop located at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac sub-soi off of Sukhumvit 22, into a private screening room; it’s worth a visit for its atmosphere alone. There is no sign advertising the place, just a set of large and stately wooden doors, and a buzzer to gain admittance. It might feel more like a private gentleman’s club than a cinema, but once inside, one is surrounded by film memorabilia, antique cameras and film posters from the classics, and plenty of comfy chairs and sofas to chill out on. The downstairs of the threestory house is a bar, serving up inexpensive beer, soft drinks, and cocktails named after various films the drinks have been in, while the middle floor has a couch and large-screen TV, and then the pièce de résistance is the nine-seat private screening room on the third floor, complete with plush red VIP seats and a giant screen.

y father managed movie theatres for a living, and the father one of my best school-friends was the Vice President of 20th Century Fox, so to say that I grew up watching a lot of film is a bit of an understatement. My pop brought me to work with him at times, and I can still remember sitting through four screenings of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, being just as captivated on the last showing as when I first walked in. Residing in Bangkok for almost a decade, one of my biggest disappointments here has been the lack of quality cinema here. Yes, we have some of the most comfortable multiplexes in the world, and yes, we’ve had a film festival or two that had a few decent features, but for the most part, arthouse cinema here is about as popular as good literature. Fortunately, the arrival of the Friese-Greene Club to Bangkok gives the city a much-needed breath of fresh air.

Aesthetics aside, it is the films that make this place a winner. The FGC features different films every night, almost all of them hard to find arthouse gems or film classics that one would never see in Bangkok. The films are set around monthly or weekly themes, which range from documentaries to indies to classics. The film lineup is quite astounding, with titles like Citizen Kane, Being There, In the Realm of the Senses, Eraserhead, or The Thin Blue Line all having had recent screenings. While Spurrier set up the FGC as a member’s club, mainly due to worries that he might get overrun by some of the nearby bar crowd on Soi 22, for the moment one only needs to make a booking in order to secure

16 mango metro NOVEMBER 2013

one of the nine seats upstairs. If those are full, one can still come in and watch the night’s film at the downstairs bar or on the second floor sofa on large LCD TVs. Many of the patrons of FrieseGreene are regulars, lovers of film, and also folks that think that going to a movie and sharing it with others is far preferable to sitting home alone in front of a video. Bangkok’s arthouse film scene is a small one. It was a sad day when the Siam Theatre burned down, and although the gorgeous Scala or the serviceable Lido screens have escaped the developer’s sword so far, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of hope that they will be around for too many more years. House RCA still shows some decent movies but is a bit out of the way in terms of

arlier this year at a conference in Tokyo, the world governing bodies for baseball and softball agreed to merge and form the World Baseball Softball Confederation in an effort to have both sports accepted back into the Olympic Games in 2020 after they missed being included in the London 2012 Olympics. The same effort to promote both baseball and softball is undergoing in Thailand too, where amateur associations have been established since 1966 for softball and, much later in 1992, for baseball. Unfortunately, neither of the two sports was selected to be included in the 13th Southeast Asian Games that will take place in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, in December 2013. Although there are a few distinct differences between baseball and softball, the rules of the game are pretty much the same. Compared to baseball, the ball in softball is much larger while the play area is smaller with shorter distances between the pitcher’s mount and the batter’s plate, and the route around the bases. The Bangkok International Softball League (BISL) has been operating in the Thai capital for over twenty seasons. The game played at BISL is slowpitch softball and includes Thai players and over 160 expats from all over the world. One of the BISL expat players is Dr. Troy P. Regis, a 40-year-old American living in Thailand for the past four years, and he is the Middle School Mathematics Department Head at the International School Bangkok in Pakkret, Nonthaburi. Dr. Troy explains the difference between softball and baseball:“The benefits of softball versus baseball is that a lot more people can play the game of softball because the ball comes in on a 6-foot to 12-foot arc, and not at 80 or 90 miles per hour like baseballs. The game is played at a bit of a slower pace as well, so that adults from 18 to 80 can play the game, whereas baseball tends to be generally played by younger players.”

number of people in Thailand, in general, there should be more players out there who may not even know the league exists. I would also like to see more women come out and play. It is an adult league, and we have had some women play in the past, but at this point, all of our current members are male. I know there are women in the area who can play softball, so I would like to see them join the league.” This is true since softball can be played by people of any age, and the BISL has a wide variety of people in their league with ages ranging from 20 to 70 years old. For anyone who has ever played baseball or softball, or even the game of rounders or cricket, which use similar skill sets, the key in being a successful softball player is having good eye-hand coordination for hitting and catching the ball. “The biggest difference here, when compared to where I played softball in America, is that we don’t have players who just show up and play on teams as substitutes,” clarifies Dr. Troy. “In America, many softball complexes are used where multiple fields are available, multiple games are taking place at the same time, and there are players who show up and play with a team they have never played with before, but who might need a player or two to make ten in the field. Here in Bangkok, we just have our teams in the league who play and our rules only allow a player to be on one roster only. “Softball in Thailand is a great way to connect with expats and Thais who work in a variety of fields. It has been great establishing a network of teammates and friends throughout the league who have also become part of my social circle outside of the game,” says Dr. Troy. The BISL has been played at several different fields over the years, but currently they are using a couple of the local international schools, especially International School Bangkok (Samakee Road, Pakkret, Nonthaburi) and Ruamrudee International School (Ramkhamhaeng Road, Minburi, Bangkok). For more information about their schedule, Most of the players in the BISL have some experience playing both teams, standings, and upcoming events, visit their website at sports, but many of them have transitioned out of baseball and only play www.bangkoksoftball.info. softball competitively now. One other major difference is that they play doubleheaders (2 games, 7 innings each), whereas in baseball they tend to play only one game (9 innings). Softball is played with 10 defensive players in the field, and they can bat an open lineup, which means up to 15 batters at the plate in total. Dr. Troy started playing softball during his high school days in America while, at the same time, playing baseball. When he went to university, he stopped playing baseball and has only played softball since he was about 17 years old. With his field experience gained in Michigan, Arizona, and Missouri, he is a great addition to the BISL and has played for two full seasons now in Bangkok. One point that must be noted is that softball gear in Thailand is quite expensive. Dr. Troy states that: “Since I have not purchased any here, I buy mine when I am at home. However, I know that you can buy a glove for fielding for anywhere between $45 and $200, depending on the quality of the leather. Bats typically cost between $120 and $450, again depending on the brand and the technology used to make the bat.” Other than that, the only other standard equipment most players use is cleats, which are the appropriate shoes. Uniforms and hats, batting gloves, and other equipment can be used as players prefer. While the league does require uniforms during matches, most team sponsors help to supply the relevant colors and designs for their team. The BISL does not operate out of one location, but rather, it is run by players through a governing Board of Directors and Advisors. “We also have team representatives who help to make decisions about rules and variations to how we play the game. While there are standard rules for the game of softball, leagues can modify some of the rules to fit their own league,” Dr. Troy explains. To join the softball league, each player must pay a 1,000-baht player fee, and a team has to pay 40,000 baht to play in the league. While sponsors pay the league entrance fee for the teams, players on most teams have to pay the individual player fee themselves. Referring to the softball movement in Thailand, Dr. Troy confesses that “it’s great that there are so many players here in Bangkok, but I would like to see more adults playing softball. Given the size of Bangkok, and the

Your Pension Lump Sum May Be HALVED NEW UK PENSION PROPOSAL Have you got a UK pension of £200,000 or more? The amount of cash lump sum you receive in retirement might be cut to £36,000 Instead of £50,000 under newly proposed pension rules in the UK. If you have a pension pot of more than £144,000 you would be affected and have your lump sum capped. That means if you are only 50, you only need a current pension of around £60,000 for it to be affected if you retire at 65 and your pension grows at 6% p.a. So, this could have a far reaching affect. Ed Balls has revealed he would cut pension tax relief and cap pension lump sums if Labour were to be elected in 2015. However, the current government may also decide to cap the amount of cash a pensioner in the UK could get access to. This all stems from a report by the Pensions Policy Institute which released a paper in June this year in which the PPI has made suggestions to the UK government concerning pension changes. The new proposals would hit the highest rate tax payers in the UK. In their press release, they state, “Tax relief offers important advantages to pension savers, but does little to encourage pension saving, particularly among low and medium earners” The main gripe is that some higher rate tax payers get higher tax relief when making payments and then just pay basic rate of tax at retirement. PPI is trying to redress the balance to encourage more lower and middle rate savings, at the expense of higher rate tax payers. What would the new tax relief rate be? PPI have

suggested a flat rate of 30% across the board rather than the current tiered system. Previous statements by Mr Balls have nodded towards a 20% cap for those earning £150,000 or more. Party leader Ed Miliband has suggested a 26% cap across the board in the past as well.

they can take 50% of any increase in their pension pot after transfer every 3 years.

So, if someone has a £400,000 pension and transfers to a QROPS in Malta, they could take £120,000 upfront. Then in 3 years, they could take 120% of GAD rate plus 50% of any increase in pension. This This is on top of proposals to fade out personal could means receiving a pension income of around allowance for higher rate tax payers which have £16,000 with an extra £26,000 in year 3 as a lump been written in the plan for future budgets. sum. You can take these extra lump sums every [ http://goo.gl/AIdyue ] 3 years. A transfer offshore allows you to receive a much higher income and higher cash lump sums. This will have far reaching consequences for higher rate tax payers and could mean that their pensions could be capped at £36,000. This could be a shock to the system for pension savers who have built up a large pension. For example, on a £400,000 pension, normally they could expect a £100,000 lump sum at retirement. However, under the new proposed pension rules, higher income rate tax payers would receive only £36,000. A fall in the cash amount at retirement of £64,000. That will be a big shock to the system, particularly for divorced expats who may need this money as a down payment on a new flat. You also have the choice For British expats or Brits who are looking to retire to invest in the mutual funds, gilts, abroad, you can do something about it before treasuries, bond funds or ETF’s that you wish as the new pension rules kick in. You can transfer well as choosing which currency to transfer your your pension offshore to a Qualifying Recognized pension into. This means getting not be far off. It takes 3 – 6 months to transfer to a a lump sum of £120,000 instead of the measly QROPS. [ http://goo.gl/FkWaj7 ] £36,000 under new proposed rules. Furthermore, The latest poll on 10th October has Conservatives on 32%, Labour 38%, LD 11% and UKIP 13%. [ http://goo.gl/VRkZ1X ]
