hile I certainly enjoy wandering through a gallery of classic Van Gogh or Picasso masterpieces, I must admit that after about an hour, I am ready for a nap. I just don’t last long in museums of any kind, and I think that there is some sort of correlation between 60 minutes and some sort of internal beer-and-food clock ticking that prohibits any kind of further enjoyment. Thus, I was most happily surprised when I visited Chiang Mai’s latest ode to culture, The Art in Paradise Gallery, and found myself ecstatically joining the masses for the most hands-on museum experience I’ve ever had. Art in Paradise is the brainchild of Shin Jae Yeol, a Korean who has now brought two 3D art museums to Thailand – one in Pattaya and the latest to Chiang Mai. Shin had been managing Loveland, a sex and erotic art sculpture park on Jeju Island in South Korea, and a colleague thought he ought to develop a similar attraction here. The Ministry of Culture wasn’t too thrilled by this proposal, which ended up being a good thing, as this led to the opening of Pattaya’s first art museum of any kind. One good thing led to another, and the founders recently opened up the Chiang Mai branch, which is the largest 3D art gallery in the world. 3D or illusion art seeks to turn ordinary two-dimensional artwork into three-dimensional interactive pieces. At both the Chiang Mai and Pattaya galleries, visitors get to be part of the paintings and get creative in terms of how they want to see and be in the picture. Needless to say, the results are one incredible photo op, and in a Facebook- and Instagram-crazed country like Thailand, you can just imagine how much fun people have posing. There are classic paintings in the galleries, such as the Mona Lisa or Vermeer’s The Milkmaid, but they are modified so that viewers can get involved with the paintings. In the case of the Mona Lisa, there is a brush attached to her so that photos come out turning the viewer into the artist, and in the Milkmaid, one can lie under the pitcher and drink the milk or have it poured on one’s head! Expanding from the classics, the galleries also have many theme rooms, such as an African safari, ancient Egypt, a land of the dinosaurs, a deep sea with sharks and mermaids creations,

and so on. One can also visit Venice (punting in a gondola of course), go surfing, and even appear as the star on the cover of National Geographic or Time magazines. While there are some photos at various exhibits showing visitors how to best interact with the painting, much of the gallery is left to one’s own imagination and doit-yourself techniques, with plenty of room for improvisation.

HEALTHY TALKS Demystifying Uterine Fibroids Detect and treat early for best results

Dr. Chantawat Sheanakul Specialist in gynecologic oncology and microinvasive surgery

Uterine fibroids are fairly common in women of reproductive age. Should you worry about it? Dr. Chantawat Sheanakul, a gynecologist at Bumrungrad International Hospital who specializes in gynecologic oncology and microinvasive surgery, is here to answer all your questions about these women-specific tumors. What you need to know about uterine fibroids “Fibroids are – simply put – cells inside our bodies that grow larger than normal, causing a number of varying abnormalities. These fibroids are common; up to 60% of women can be found having fibroids. These benign growths can be found outside the uterus, within the uterine wall, or in the uterine cavity. Women with uterine fibroids may experience pain, abnormal bleeding, constipation or frequent urination. As for the cause of uterine fibroids, there is no clear answer but the risk of endometriosis is hypothesized that the changing lifestyles of today’s women, who marry later and choose to have children later, leads to the collection of menstrual blood within the uterus. When a girl begins her period at 12 years old, as she ages, residual menstrual blood that is collected outside the uterus increases.

to high, we can begin with patients who have never experienced any abnormal symptoms, but during a pelvic exam, fibroids were discovered. If the fibroids are in the first stages of growth and are still small, I think the prognosis is excellent since early detection means early treatment. The next stage would mean larger fibroids that are putting pressure on nearby organs, such as the bladder, leading to a more frequent urge to urinate, but only a little urine being expelled, or the intestines, leading to constipation. Bigger, more severe fibroids, might even been detectable by touch by the patient themselves, while endometriosis usually causes abnormally painful periods that warrant pain medication. This is probably the most severe symptom of endometriosis, along with excessive bleeding during menstruation or abdominal pain after sexual intercourse.”

Severity of uterine fibroids Time for treatment “If we categorize the severity of uterine fibroids ac- “In terms of treatment, when I have diagnosed a cording to the symptoms demonstrated from low fibroid in the uterus, the first thing to do is develop a treatment plan. This will depend on a number of factors, such as the age of the patient and what treatment is most appropriate. For example, in a patient who is older and has entered menopause, the fibroids often shrink and disappear on their own. Others may need treatment. I would also inquire about the symptoms that the patient is experiencing, such as how much pain they are feeling, and I would check for the characteristics of the fibroids and the likelihood of further growth. Most importantly I would ask my patient if they are planning to have children. All of these factors will influence the diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan for each patient.” Simple surgery “If surgery is the best treatment, then I have to consider what would be the best methods of surgery

Women’s Center opening hours: Monday – Saturday from 07.00 – 20.00 / Sunday from 08.00 – 20.00

because there are many procedures for removing uterine fibroids. Abdominal surgery is one and usually causes visible scarring and a long recovery. Most patients considering this type of surgery worry about the scars that will occur. These days, laparoscopic surgery is quite popular because surgical incisions are small, only 5 millimeters, and thus there is no scarring after surgery. Another advantage of this type of surgery is minimal impact to other organs, reducing complications and the risk of infection. Recovery is quicker, and the patient is able to return home and to their normal lives more quickly. A question that I am asked often is, after surgery, what are the chances of recurrence? While the uterus remains, there is always the chance of fibroids returning since the uterus is the main factor in the occurrence of fibroids.” Early detection, early treatment “As we know, unless uterine fibroids are large enough to be detectable through touch, there is no visual way to know that someone has fibroids. Thus, to detect any abnormalities of the uterus, an internal pelvic exam is necessary. Women should be checked once a year because the earlier a fibroid is found, the better the prognosis after treatment.” Five Signs of Trouble If you experience any of these, see your doctor immediately! + Abnormally painful periods + Abdominal pain that occurs even when you’re doing nothing + Vaginal bleeding between periods + Frequent urge to urinate, but little urine expelled + Abnormal constipation

SIAM ...IN 1 DAY! By Voicu Mihnea Simandan

H

ow well versed are you in the subtle intricacies of the culture of Thailand? Let’s have a short quiz: What temples are depicted on the reverse of the four most used Thai coins? Stop and think. If your answers are Wat Phra Kaew, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, for the 1-baht coin; Wat Saket, or the Golden Mount, for the 2-baht coin; Wat Benchamabophit, or the Marble Temple, for the 5-baht coin; and Wat Arun, or the Temple of the Dawn, for the 10-baht coin, then you have successfully passed to Round Two. But are you truly knowledgeable when it comes to the less used satang coins? There are five satang coins in circulation today, although only the ‘higher denominations’ of 25 and 50 satang are still used in everyday life, while the 1, 5, and 10 satang coins are almost exclusively used in banking transactions. So, what are the temples engraved on their reverse? I’ll give you a tip. Unlike the coins detailed in the previous paragraph, which all depict temples in Bangkok, the satang coins make tribute to temples from the north and south of Thailand. If you’ve had some luck with the first question, Thais and foreigners would have a hard time naming the temples on the satang coins. Unless you’re an expert in Thai numismatics, the study or collection of coins and banknotes, it is unlikely that you would know that Wat Phrathat Haripunchai from Lamphun is on the reverse of the 1-satang coin; Phra Pathom Chedi from Nakhon Pathom, the tallest stupa in the world, is on the 5-satang coin; Phra That Choeng Chum from Sakon Nakhon is on the 10-satang coin; Wat Phra Mahathat from Nakhon Si Thammarat is on the 25-satang coin; and, lastly, Wat Phra Doi Suthep from Chiang Mai, with its iconic golden chedi, or Buddhist stupa, and ceremonial umbrella, is on the 50-satang coin.

Apart from being major tourist attractions, all these temples are also highly revered by Buddhist believers throughout Thailand (and beyond), and their selection by the Bureau of Royal Thai Mint stands as clear proof of that. But the Kingdom of Thailand abounds in thousands of other equally valuable religious structures, and to visit them all would be a tremendous feat. Theoretically, you could take a year off from work and tour the country from end to end –deplete your personal finances in the process – or you could simply go on a one-day trip to Ancient Siam in Samut Prakan. It is also known in Thai as Mueang Boran, which literally translates as ‘Ancient City,’ the park’s former name. Dubbed as the world’s largest outdoor museum, Ancient Siam is a 320-acre (600-rai) park roughly constructed in the shape of Thailand. The project was the brainchild of Prapai ‘Lek’ Viriyaphant, a Thai millionaire and patron of the Thai arts, who is also ‘to blame’ for two other equally magnificent structures, the Sanctuary of Truth, an all-wooden temple in Pattaya, and Erawan Museum, the statue museum of a three-headed elephant, also located in Samut Prakan. Although Khun Lek passed away in 2000 at the age of 86, his legacy continues to benefit the understanding of Thai culture both within the country and internationally. What started as an idea for a golf course with miniature Thai-style temples and palaces to be spread around the course for the enjoyment, cultural immersion, and education for the players, ended up as an open-air museum that now features 116 structures representing Thailand’s most famous monuments and architectural designs. The change from golf course to museum was made when Khun Lek realised that many of the original structures he wanted to reproduce in miniature on his golf course were severely damaged. Making good use of his immense wealth, he then decided to create Mueang Boran, a place

The area around the Old Market Town gives visitors the chance to experience traditional Thai crafts and purchase souvenirs. It is highly recommended that you purchase the guide to the park, as most of the structures lack any kind of descriptions. Using the foldout map at the end of the guide, with each of the 116 buildings clearly labelled and numbered, will make sure that your time at Ancient Siam will be well spent. Since 2004, entry prices have gone up fivefold, and unfortunately, the park’s administration has put in place a double pricing system, with foreigners paying double what Thai nationals do. So for foreigners, the entry fee stands at 500 baht for adults and 250 baht for children. But if you work legally in Thailand and can show your work permit, you can get the Thai price. Private guides for individuals are available in both Thai and English, while trams can be hired for large groups. Also for a fee, you can rent golf carts and bicycles, or you can bring your own vehicle in (again, for a fee), to move freely around the massive outdoor museum. Additionally, Ancient Siam puts at customers’ disposal banquet services, conference halls, seminar rooms, and overnight stays in single or double rooms. A vast garden is perfect for outdoor activity stations, filming, and wedding receptions. If you drive your own car, take the expressway towards Samut Prakan until you reach the SamrongSamut Prakan exit, and turn left at the Samut Prakan intersection. The museum is at Km. 33 on the Old Sukhumvit Road. Or take air-conditioned bus #511 to the end of the line and then change to minibus #36, which will drop you off at the entrance of the park. SOUTHERN COMFORT

SURAT THANI By Dave Stamboulis

S

urat Thani is the largest province in southern Thailand, and while the town itself isn’t known for much more than its convenient airport, it is the jumping-off point for some fantastic nature and some of the most chilled-out spots in the Kingdom. From jungle to beaches to island hideaways, Surat Thani has it all, and whether it be on posh Koh Samui, ‘full-mooned’ Koh Phangan, sleepy Koh Tao, or adventuring in the jungle in magnificent Khao Sok National Park, visitors are sure to be wowed down south, no matter where they go or what they do. Surat Thani (which means ‘City of Good People’) is worth at least a glance. As many tourists rush through here en route to the islands, they miss out on one of the country’s better night markets, several blocks full of food stalls selling everything from seafood to grilled crickets and more. There is also the opportunity to visit the

novel Monkey Training College, where monkeys are trained to pick coconuts. Although it might sound hokey, the center is actually well run and quite interesting, not to mention that the training is all very loving and animal-friendly. Home stays are available to further get involved with the simians. Once out of the town, you have your pick – either islands and beaches or mountains and jungle. An hour east is Khao Sok, possibly the most beautiful national park in Thailand, with a combination of primary rainforest, limestone karst peaks, abundant wildlife, and the beautiful deep blue waters of the Chao Larn Lake making up the 700 square kilometers of protected natural beauty. You can sleep on floating raft hotels on the lake or in a jungle treehouse here, and enjoy the hornbill and gibbon calls during the quiet mornings before going trekking or kayaking.

If sun and sand is your forte, Surat Thani is one of Thailand’s top choices to get there. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao are all a short boat ride away from town, with multiple departures via speedboat and ferry to any of the islands every day. While each island has their own charms, they do tend to be known for certain things. Koh Samui is the largest of the trio, and while a backpacker haven ages ago, it’s now home to some of Thailand’s most posh resorts and loads of international dining options; if you want to relax in style, Samui is definitely the top choice. Koh Phangan, the next island over, is famed for being home to the raucous Full Moon Party, which occurs every month and guarantees a sleepless wild night for all those in attendance; needless to say, if you want to dance the night away, you know where to go. Koh Tao is a bit further out, the smallest of the three islands, and receives the least press, but if you like diving or snorkeling, Koh Tao is the

16 mango metro OCTOBER 2013

best option, as it is renowned for its dive operations and excellent wreck diving and coral reefs. Due to its mountainous terrain, Koh Tao remains relatively undeveloped… at least, far less than its southern neighbors. A few gems of Surat that you definitely shouldn’t miss are the Ang Thong National Marine Park off of Koh Samui nor the islet of Nang Yuan just off of Koh Tao. Ang Thong, which means ‘golden bowl’ in Thai, is a group of 42 islands designated with national park status and is blissfully development-free. Boat tours of the islands will get you to all the top spots, the highlight undoubtedly being the talay nai, or ‘inland sea’ on Mae Ko Island, a sinkhole lagoon formed by collapsed land that formed underground tunnels and cave systems, with beautiful emerald green water looking almost like a glacier lake from an alpine environment. Kayaking is the way to explore here, as

there are plenty of hidden beaches and lagoons in Ang Thong where big boats can’t fit. A kayak is also a nice way to go on Koh Nang Yuan, which is actually three little jungle-clad drops of land that are connected to one another by a beautiful long white sandbar. The photo ops from the lookout atop one of the land bumps are right out of National Geographic, as the surrounding water is turquoise, the beaches made of powdery white sand, and each bay as beautiful as the next one. The small islet does get crowded with daytrippers, but there is excellent diving and snorkeling offshore if the beaches get too full. Regardless of your choice, a trip to Surat Thani will also include plenty of down time in a hammock, beach chair, or other chilled-out spot. Just make sure to include a cold beverage to keep you company.

ODD WAT By Chris Backe

It’s a little over a kilometer to our next destination; you can either walk about 15 minutes or so, look for bus #544 or #547, or hop into a taxi… but let’s walk. From Wat Yannawa, head north about 600 meters, passing the BTS station along the way, and take a right onto Silom Road. Walk another 700 meters down Silom and look for the next temple on your right. Next up: Bangkok’s Hindu temple – Wat Khaek to Thais or Wat Prasri Maha Umathewee to the devout inside. Six pujas are observed daily; if you arrive between 11:00-11:30 a.m., you might find yourself observing one for yourself. First things first, though: Take your shoes off by the gate, and put your cameras away. Shoes and photos are the two things seemingly everyone’s watching out for. Founded in 1827 by Tamil immigrants, this is a microcosm of Hindu culture in Thailand’s capital. The six-meter-tall, copper-colored spiral pillar is but the first of many sights. Walk around the outer temple and see the gods and goddesses of the Hindu faith. While I won’t claim to be an expert on what to do with these items, 60 baht takes care of your ceremonial needs – a plate with green bananas, a bottle of water, a small flower garland, and a coconut (for the milk inside). For those with a need or prayer, the esiimsi – the metal cup with dozens of numbered sticks – can be shaken; otherwise, consider buying a flower garland, some sticks of incense, or leave a donation for the upkeep. For the souvenir hunters, a number of Ganesh statues are offered just to the right of the inner temple. Beyond the religious significance and deep meaning to the devout, a few distractions are about. From outside the temple, the roof’s intricate details are both colorful and meaningful. You wouldn’t be the first person to be more mesmerized by the outside than the inside. While inside, however, the outer temple’s array of women with bountiful breasts is another distraction. Thousands of white LEDs accentuate the archway of the inner temple… even for the non-believer, there is a sense of awe in the room. Once inside, pray to Ganesh first, Karthik second, and then to the other gods in freestanding shrines of their own.

After enjoying the temple, it’s time for some appropriate lunch – there are plenty of Indian restaurants around here. Get back to Silom Road and head east (the same way as you were going to arrive at the temple). Walk a hundred meters and look for Diamond Restaurant. It’s vegetarian-only, as are several alternative choices along Thanon Pan, the road running to the side ith more temples than you could visit in even a few months, of the wat (for the carnivores, the options await along Silom Road, but DiaBangkok’s religious offerings need a bit of narrowing down, so mond’s paneer butter masala might make you consider the switch). here are three of Bangkok’s most unusual wats, all within walking distance or short rides of each other. Once done with lunch, hail a taxi for Wat Periwat, or opt to use public transportation by continuing down Silom Road 400 meters to the intersection, Our first destination involves a Buddhist temple in the shape of a ship – a then turn right and walk to Chong Nonsi. Follow the signs to the BRT (not Chinese junk, to be exact. Start from the BTS Saphan Taksin station, walk the BTS) and hop on the next bus leaving the station. Ride for about 15 minaway from the river, then take the first right down Charoen Krung to Wat utes (seven stops) to Wat Periwat station. Hop off, use the pedestrian overYannawa. You’ll see the viharn in the shape of a Chinese junk inside the pass to cross the expressway, and walk on in. temple. Originally constructed during the Ayutthaya period (1350-1767 AD), it was during the reign of King Rama III that trade with China bloomed, and naturally, Chinese junks were bringing that trade into town. As steam ships slowly replaced the old junks, the king wanted folks to remember the boats that served the kingdom well before the advance in technology. This ‘ship’ would never float, of course, partially because it’s made with concrete, and partially because there are two chedi (pagodas) instead of masts. Look around and you will also find a donated large bronze bell commemorating His Majesty the King’s 80th birthday celebration in 2007.

W

Take a look inside the ‘ship’ by going up the steps on the side. It’s rather plain, but is a surprisingly quiet place to reflect – a rarity in Bangkok. But watch your head as you explore. Behind the junk is the ubosot (ordination hall), which has seen better days. It’s still quite pretty, but the cover over the top is likely needed for a reason. This may not always be open to the public, so enjoy the outside briefly before moving on.

With a new section still under construction, Wat Periwat is better known as the ‘David Beckham temple,’ thanks to a statue of the famous football player. Installed by sculptor Thongruang Haemhod (with the agreement of the abbot) in 1998 as part of the World Cup celebrations, you’re likely to be steered towards it quickly. At a mere 30 centimeters tall, you won’t be confusing the statue for a major image… but football is a religion to some, isn’t it? The Beckham statue is seen hands on legs, as if sizing up a defense he’s about to break through. Head to the building with the blue roof; you may need to ask around to get someone to unlock the building if it’s not already opened. The temple’s still-under-construction side (but open to the curious) offers a few more surprises. Look towards the roof, where you’ll typically find a number of traditional decorations of images. But here, you’ll also find ‘cowboys & indians,’ a pirate with a hook, a traditionally dressed African warrior, and a Middle Eastern archer with a golden arrow. Take your time in looking around, but stay safe in what may still be a construction zone.

If you haven’t had enough religious intake for one day, the Dharma Buddha Relics Museum is next door to Wat Periwat, and is a potent blend of images and solemnness. It’s skippable if time is running short, or if you’d rather find a place to cool down. Wat Yannawa – goo.gl/maps/DJYs4 – 40 Charoen Krung Rd. Free admission. Wat Khaek / Wat Prasri Maha Umathewee – http://goo.gl/y7O8n8 – goo.gl/maps/Dc2MK – 36/9 Silom Road. Open 6 a.m.-8 p.m. No photographs while inside the temple – unlike other temples, this rule is strictly enforced. Free admission, donations appreciated. Diamond Restaurant – goo.gl/maps/iUMjP – 707 Silom Road. Mains from 150 baht, soups from 80 baht. Wat Periwat – goo.gl/maps/b05ZM – Riverside along Rama III. Free admission.
