BACK TO SQUARE ONE
Here we are again, on strict lockdown once more. As I write, the return to Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) is supposed to be lifted on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021, but the positivity rate does not decrease, we could be looking at a longer lockdown. For us at Manila House, this is a bittersweet development. Last year’s lockdown, while absolutely necessary, came at a severe cost to all of us, both professionally and personally. And just as we were clawing our way back into financial recovery, albeit with a much leaner staff, lower foot traffic, and less space, we have had to close down dine-in operations in the interest of public safety. Please remember that we remain open, however, to cater to your takeaway orders. As we did last year, we have retained a skeleton staff to keep the kitchen going; at the same time, we are taking advantage of the lull in business to carry out much needed touch-ups and repairs to the Club, in addition to our regular deep-cleaning and disinfecting. During this long and often surreal year in which many lost loved ones, not to mention their sources of livelihood, we were buoyed by the prospect of the vaccines helping us return to some semblance of normal. We talked so much about “the new normal” and envisioned a post-Covid world, only to discover that we are living in the new normal and it’s here to stay for the foreseeable future. The steep rise in cases - today we have just breached 10,000 cases a day - is certainly cause for alarm. We urge everyone to stay home and stay safe in the meantime, and stop the spread.

Joy Ramos Numbers, they say, are the language of business. If that is indeed the case, Doris Joy Ramos, our Treasury and Credit Collection Supervisor, speaks it with fluency When and why did you decide to work with numbers? Honestly, I didn’t like numbers! I remember before entering college, I was still undecided on what course to take. Then, come enrollment time, I registered under Business Management only to be surprised when I received my registration card—I was enrolled under the Financial Management course—and that’s how it all started. And because of this, I’m able to work with a lot of well-known businessmen and influential personalities, here and abroad. And that for me is a great privilege. Do you have any key mentors or people who deeply influenced who you are, in your work and life? Growing up in a simple family in the province, I consider my mother as the greatest influence in my life. She taught me the value of perseverance, fairness and fear in our Creator-- which I believe helped me to become the person I am now. What motivates or inspires you, considering that we are in a pandemic? The fact that my family is safe and healthy and we still have food on our table is already a big blessing that keeps me sane this pandemic. In spite and despite of everything, I can truly say that God is really good. What types of activities or hobbies do you enjoy outside of work? Playing volleyball is my passion, and of course spending time with my loved ones and friends. But due to the pandemic, I don’t get to spend as much time with them as I used to, and that somehow saddened me. I hope and pray that this pandemic will end soon so that we can finally go back to our normal lives with no restrictions and limitations.

“While the uncertainty of COVID-19 makes it difficult to plan, I believe it is helpful to always remain engaged in purposeful and positive tasks. Here at Manila House, we didn’t take the recent ECQ announcement as a ‘disruption’ in our continuing efforts to provide a safe haven to our Members, patrons and employees. We instead used this time to achieve deep compliance with COVID-19 safety measures by conducting deep cleaning, disinfecting, preventive maintenance and converting our outlets into carry-out and takeaway operations. This experience during the crisis showed that our business and our employees are capable of handling more than we ever thought possible. When our business reopens, we shall bring all of the insight, knowledge and resilience we’ve gained throughout this experience.” - Jose L. Arcilla General Manager 12

FIGHTING COVID: VACCINE FACTS AND FICTION As the covid vaccines begin to trickle into the Philippines, the rumor mill is also working overtime. While it’s not our place to compel anyone to get vaccinated, we believe in the efficacy of the vaccines which have been developed in record speed to fight the coronavirus pandemic that has immobilized the world for more than a year now. More than anything, we believe in the importance of getting our information from reliable, scientifically vetted and FDA-approved information.
Vaccine Myth
Vaccine Fact
It was rushed and isn’t safe
Researchers took no safety shortcuts. Large Studies show the vaccine is safe

“Success is learning to give more instead of take. “ Tell us what you do?
What would you like to see in the “next normal”?
Showroom Director at Kenneth Cobonpue Manila
More reconnecting in the next normal way.
How do you define success?
What’s your favorite thing about ManilaHouse?
Success is learning to give more instead of take. When we help others or give of ourselves we create an environment where others want to help you too. This, I believe, is the perfect world we all want to live in.
Winding down al fresco on Avenue Deck.
What life lessons did you derive from the pandemic?
Spain, as I have been enrolled at Instituto Cervantes for a couple of years. Because of the pandemic we shifted to online, it would be best to be immersed ( even if limited) in the culture - and this time the Netflix subtitles will be in English.
I learned that to maintain a healthy balance between work and play is key to staying happy. And if you aren’t happy, you can’t be motivated. So you need a really good balance.
If you had to be quarantined (again) which country would you choose to be in?

CLUB QUARANTINE
Coping with lockdown one year on can take its toll on our physical and mental health. Dr. Aisa Yamamoto, a Functional Medicine practitioner and Von Guintu, a psychologist presented a multipronged approach to wholistic health, involving the food we eat, the amount of sleep we get, the stress we deal with and the physical exercise we fit into our daily lives. Jason Villanueva, a dietician and nutritionist as well as a trained chef, distilled his strategy for overall welbeing into five key points: Remove, Replace, Reinoculate, Repair and Rebalance.

ARTISTS ON ART
This webinar featured four members who are also exceptional artists - Jay Yao, Tracie Anglo Dizon, Carlo Calma and Wonhee Delgado or Whee - whose recent artworks are part of a group exhibition at Leon Gallery, under the auspices of another friend of Manila House, Derek Flores of DF Art Agency. Out four members were joined by Kim Lim, who was part of the group show, Art Detour. It was a very relaxed conversation about art. As we all know, the pandemic has put an end to art fairs and large-scale public events. Even the more intimate setting of the gallery has had to be adapted to today’s current realities. We discussed how their ability to create was affected by the pandemic and how their experience was reflected in their work. For the artists, it has been a productive and creative period, with the lockdown allowing them space to focus. As Kim Lim noted, “it was important to be driven by curiosity, and not by fear.”

ON THE BLOCK
Blockchain technology is fairly new territory for many of us, but it’s poised to change the way the world does business in the near future. Jeff Wentworth, the co-founder of Curvegrid, a blockchain SaaS startup based in Tokyo, began his presentation with an introduction to the current craze in the art world, Non-Fungible Tokens or NFT, with one particular artwork already by the artist known as Beeple auctioned by Christie’s, and crypto being accepted as a form of payment alongside the standard payment modes. He also did a quick demo of how blockchain technology worked. Jonathan Morgan, the co-founder of Kobe International Blockchain Research Centre (Kobeibrc) in Japan, demonstrated business case uses for blockchain, while leading Philippine technology lawyer JJ Disini tackled Philippine regulatory policies and laws towards blockchain and cryptocurrency. Mathieu Labro of the Tokyo-based enterprise cloud collaboration platform provider, moderated the discussion.

TRAVEL AS AN EMOTION
The travel industry is preparing for surge in demand for travel, particularly for boutique travel, once borders reopen, quarantine restrictions have been eased, and many travelers have been vaccinated. Our three boutique travel specialists said that vaccine passports, or certification of the presence of antibodies, may likely become a requirement as early as May 14, when Europe is expected to begin welcoming tourists for the summer season, although considering the volatile nature of the coronavirus, that may be subject to change. What will never change is the lure of travel and adventure. And the next time you travel, consider a woman travel specialist for help in planning your dream vacation. “I definitely think that a woman’s touch is different. Aside from making sure that logistics are in place and everything happens seamlessly, I put myself in the position of the client and try to imagine, how do I make this experience more romantic for them? How do I make this experience more emotional for them? It’s really that emotional factor that makes a trip unique.” - Yessa Yu Caparas (A2A Travel) “There are things, as women, that we always pay attention to. For example, I always pay attention to the cadence of a trip. When I’m designing an itinerary, I play it out in my mind and run through the sequence: okay, so they’re having lunch, what’s after lunch, what’s the next step? So what’s the high, what’s the low and what’s the medium point of the trip and how do I end it? Those are the nuances I think as a woman we are more inclined to pay attention to.” - Tesa Totengco (Travels with Tesa) “Since I’m a mom, I’m a wife, I’m a daughter, I’m a girlfriend, I feel I have more empathy and understanding for clients who have special requests like caring for elderly travelers, especially for multi-generational travelers. You have the grandmas and grandfathers joining the trip so you have to provide them with the right support for the trip so that they’re as comfortable as possible, then there’s adapting to families with kids of all ages, making sure we make it fun, we make it family friendly and safe… A woman’s touch means you’re more communicative with all the suppliers, making sure all the T’s are crossed and all the I’s are dotted right. And I’ve also been in their shoes as a female traveler.” - Shy Perez-Sala (SPS Travel)

STOP THE HATE:
Fighting Anti-Asian Racism The Chinese origins of the coronavirus that caused the global COVID-19 pandemic have helped to stoke anti-Asian hate around the world. Violent attacks against Asian-Americans have increased in recent months, including the deadly shooting of six Asian women in three Asian-run spas in Atlanta, Georgia, and the brutal assault of a 65-year-old Filipina woman in New York City, who was on her way to church.. The “model minority” has now found its voice and is speaking out against these racially motivated acts. What does it mean to be an Asian-American today? How do we fight anti-Asian discrimination and challenge the consistent invisibility of our community so that the world accepts and respects our humanity? These questions and more will be addressed by our panelists, Former Principal Dancer, American Ballet Theater, Artistic Director Kaatsbaan Cultural Park Stella Abrera, actor Dante Basco, historian and academic, University of Washington, Seattle Vicente Rafael, Interim Director and General Manager, Street Lighting/Public Works, City of LA Hon. Miguel Sangalang, Executive Creative Director, Former Editor Marcus Teo, Managing Partner, Quan Law Group Trustee, Asia Society Texas Center Gordon Quan, and Senior Director of Strategic Initiatives Marita Etcubanez.
