MOONRISE KINGDOM

One of the silver linings of life under a pandemic has been a renewed appreciation for the outdoors. After all, being in open spaces, with a fresh breeze blowing, was more effective in helping to curtail the spread of coronavirusbearing aerosols than staying indoors. It’s no wonder the Avenue Deck has been in great demand once dine-in restrictions were relaxed. In fact, we’ve had to expand our outdoor spaces in order to safely accommodate Members wanting to dine safely outside, and we now offer Terraza and the Intramuros Garden for alfresco dining. So it was with great excitement and anticipation that we urged Members to take advantage of the uninterrupted viewing provided by our outdoor areas to catch the lunar eclipse last May 26th. It was a beautiful evening, the cool nighttime breeze was pleasantly bracing after a long hot day, and all our cabanas were fully booked. Tripods were primed, SLR cameras were positioned, drinks were ordered and food was served. All we had to do was wait for the pink moon to show. The moon was a no-show, shielded by the clouds. It finally made an appearance at 8PM, it was as a silvery sliver; the eclipse was on its way out. There was no trace of the promised pink orb that would be caused due a supermoon phenomenon wrapped in a lunar eclipse. When the sun, Earth and a full moon align, a lunar eclipse takes place. During the eclipse, the moon will have a reddish hue from the sunlight filtering through Earth’s atmosphere, according to NASA. Despite our prime position under a gorgeous sky, the moon was shy in our part of town. And yet, in those moments of anticipation, one could feel a spirit of conviviality all over the Deck, the Terraza and Intramuros Garden. It almost felt normal.

Ma. Criselda V. Saway Sales Manager

There’s probably no more challenging time to be in sales than during a pandemic. For our Sales Manager Criselda Saway, it’s been a case of “challenge accepted.”

When did you join Manila House, and what made you decide to be part of the Sales team? I joined Manila House two years ago. I learned about the job opening on LinkedIn, and luckily got hired. I love being in Sales, the perks and stuff, the more you sell, the more money you earn. I also genuinely enjoy building networks and spending time talking to people. Though being a sales person is one of the most challenging jobs, it is great to have a team that understands and supports you, working towards the same goals. What is the most fulfilling part of your job? When I know that every closed/confirmed deal contributes to the revenue of the company. It gives me a sense of achievement at the end of the day. Which event has been the most memorable or challenging so far? Most memorable are the wedding events that I handled. It feels good to help a couple organize their wedding from start to finish, the feeling that I was a part of the special milestone in their lives, the appreciation they give you during their special day, and the best part—- some of them ended up becoming my friends! What do you do to destress and keep a work-life balance?

POP QUIZ

There is no “perfect” work-life balance for me. Some days, I am too busy and focus more on my work, while some days are lighter. I just make sure on those days that I am not busy, I take a vacation and spend time with my loved ones cooking for them. I also give time for myself, like going to the salon or online shopping! What is your proudest moment? As I matured, I turned bad habits into good ones.. I know my parents are proud of that!

3

• My most prized possession is... necklace with my Mom’s ashes inside it. • My Manila House comfort food is... Lumpiang Hubad and Ebi Tempura! • The first thing I do when I come home from work is… In this time of pandemic, I shower immediately as soon as I get home. Better to be safe and protected.

HE’S THE MAN

Our Members share the life lessons their fathers taught them

Ace Gapuz

Rombit Co

I’ve always been a brave soul ready to take on anything, but I’d have to say the best thing that my dad taught me is DRIVING A CAR!

This year come September will be my father’s 30th death anniversary. He was not just Dad but also a mentor.

It might to be a very simple thing, but I learned how to drive because my dad was very patient with me back then. I remember the really early mornings (5AM) before when he would wake me up and prepare hot chocolate for me, and then we’d go practice driving around the village. It’s a very basic but useful skill, and I think my dad’s pretty much just like that too: straightforward, practical, and just has the knack for getting things done!

Carina Arenas One of the best things my father taught me was to never stop learning. Change is constant, but your ability to learn and adapt to new things is what will help you survive. 13

One of the lessons he taught me which I have passed on to my two sons goes like this: ‘… your properties can be confiscated, your companies nationalized, but no one can take away from you a solid, world class education …’

Miguel Miñana The greatest lesson my father taught me and my siblings is fostering close family ties. He has always instilled it in us to remain close to one another. From our youth that value has always been engrained in us and has been passed on to the grandchildren. My nephews and nieces treat each other as brothers and sisters and draw strength and inspiration from one another.

answer the Manila House Questionnaire “Life is not all about work and money. Family, friends and relationships are what make life happy and meaningful.” Tell us what you do.

We operate a confectionery business doing importation, distribution, retail and e-commerce. How do you define success?

This is a very difficult question. The answer may evolve as we go through life. Let me over simplify, for us it’s having the ability to spend quality time with our adult children wherever they may be. To be equally loved and respected by them. What life lessons did you derive from the pandemic?

Life is not all about work and money. Family, friends and relationships are what makes life happy and meaningful. What would you like to see in the “next normal”?

The new normal brought out many ways to work smarter, so as a result I would like to see less stressed, nicer and friendlier people. What’s your favorite thing about Manila House?

We love the food, the happy hour, and the privacy. It is also great that we always bump into friends whenever we are there. Unexpected yet memorable moments and good conversations are always treasured. If you had to be quarantined (again) which country would you choose to be in?

We would like to be quarantined in France. 14

The pandemic may have necessitated her isolation in Seoul, but it hasn’t sapped her creative spirit one bit. For over 40 years, HealthWay Family of Brands, manufacturer of INTELLIPURE, has been reimagining the world as a better, safer place with innovative air purification technologies. Our solutions are engineered in the USA and trusted everywhere air quality matters. Indoor air quality problems come in all shapes and sizes - we’re proud that our industry - leading patented DFS technology is being used in cleanroom applications, hospital surgical suites, commercial office buildings, hotels, and many mission - critical environments around the globe. In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, we have conducted a series of tests to show the efficacy of DFS technology on the capture and elimination of airborne virus and bacteria. World-reowned Infection Control expert and an advisor to the U.S. EPA and the World Health Organization, Dr. Syed Sattar, conducted his studies in a chamber that was built to comply with U.S. EPA guidelines. His testing concluded the following: DFA technology was proven to inactivate a proxy virus for SARS-Cov-2 (RNA virus MS2): The results of this data show, 99.987% elimination in 10 minutes. The test also indicated that there was 100% elimination in 45 minutes and again 100% at 24 hours indicating no regrowth. The bacteriophage MS-2 is a small (about 30 nanometers), a non-enveloped virus, which is often used as a surrogate for small, nonenveloped human pathogenic viruses such as noroviruses. Testing with Bacteriophage Phi6 as the Challenge-Testing indicated a 99.99% reduction in 10 minutes. Bacteriophage Phi6 is a larger (about 100 nanometers), enveloped virus, which is often used to represent large, enveloped human pathogenic viruses such as coronaviruses and influenza viruses. Scientific data shows that both tests indicate substantial virus elimination within 10 minutes and help us to achieve our mission - to reimagine the world as a better, safer place with innovative air purification technologies.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

Bright opportunities lie ahead in the Philippines’ real estate sector amid the vaccine rollout and the gradual economic recovery from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, said the experts speaking at the The Wealth Report 2021: A Global & Philippine Real Estate Investment Outlook held last month. Organized by Santos Knight Frank and Manila House in partnership with Julius Baer, the webinar discussed findings of The Wealth Report 2021, the 15th edition of Knight Frank’s flagship publication which tracks private investment in property and global real estate trends. Rick Santos, Chairman & CEO of Santos Knight Frank, said he expects 2021 to be a promising year for industrial & logistics, urban residential, and the real estate investment trust (REIT) on the backdrop of macrotrends such as the boom of e-commerce, infrastructure development, decentralization, and flexible office setups and workplace mobility, all of which will continue to affect the property market. Calling in from London was Liam Bailey, Global Head of Research for Knight Frank, while the Carsten Menke, Executive Director and Head of Next Generation Research at Julius Baer joined in from Zurich. Important economic indicators such as GDP growth and overseas remittances forecast a soft rebound this year. International financial institutions and the Philippines government expect GDP growth this year to be between 5.5% to 7.5%. While overseas remittances to the Philippines barely moved in 2020 (it decreased by 0.8%), a research by Morgan Stanley forecasts a 7% growth this year, with important implications in residential real estate acquisition and revitalizing consumption.

“At the end of the day, sustainability and livability go hand in hand. If cities are safer, cleaner, and calmer, they are sustainable and more livable.” - Carsten Menke

“One of the biggest challenges in the West and globally is the change of use of some office space, retail space, and residential into logistics; and having a relationship to the public and the private sector to do this well.” - Liam Bailey

“Reimagine, reposition, and reinvent to navigate 2021 and the post-pandemic period. Flexibility is key.” - Rick Santos

DIGITAL GOLD RUSH

Is it safe to invest in something as volatile as Bitcoin? Will fiat be replaced any time soon by cryptocurrencies? What happens to the value of crypto when governments begin stepping in to regulate it? All these and more were discussed in a spirited conversation between OKEX Senior Marketing Manager Chris Tan, and former investment banker and management consultant Leo Alejandrino. “Apple took about 30 years to get to a trillion [dollars in value]. Amazon took a little bit over 20 years to get to a trillion. Google took about 18 years to get to a trillion. Bitcoin started in 2009 and today it’s at a trillion dollars. It took less than 12 years to do it. This is an exponential growth that’s happening right now, and if you think that we’re at the tip, [that] we’re already at the top of that curve, we are not. We haven’t even gotten started, we are just about to break out into this massive parabolic curve meaning the price is just going to keep shooting up.” - Chris Tan

“Crypto is an intellectual fascination at various levels… It’s a technology blockchain. It’s a alternative monetary system. It’s a libertarian philosophy, you know, like [an] anti-establishment [philosophy]. It’s a store of value like gold. It’s a means to protect your assets, it’s a means to exchange your assets, it’s a means to store your assets.” - Leo Alejandrino

FUTURE FORWARD

This pandemic caught us all unawares, and there were certainly many mistakes made in our response to COVID-19, due to lack of information, lack of preparation and lack of resources. However, it’s important to learn the lessons from this ongoing experience and incorporate them into a much more resilient pandemic strategy for the future. A recent webinar, Reboot Required: What Has to Change in the Philippine COVID-19 Response, held in partnership with Centre Medicale Internationale, featured a roadmap created by experts to guide us for the next pandemic. Family medicine specialist, disaster medicine consultant, and CMI Advisory Board member Dr. Aileen Espina discussed “Prevention and Management of Surges in the Workplace and Communities.” Rheumatologist, University of the Philippines College of Medicine Professor and Vice Chancellor, and OCTA Research fellow Dr. Michael Tee explained the rise of variants, the latest hospital occupancy rates, and the advent of telemedicine in his talk “Viral Lessons.” OCTA Research fellow, pediatrician, and infectious disease and clinical pharmacology expert Dr. Benjamin Co spoke about “The Continuing Saga of COVID-19 Vaccines”—from their efficacy in real-world studies to their possible mixing and matching, and the potential of single-dose and oral preparations.

THE SPLENDOR OF THE PHILIPPINES

Did you know that the Philippines is one of only 17 mega-diverse countries in the whole world? Or that Mindoro has more bird species than Madagascar? Or that the giant clam Tridacna gigas is native to Palawan? The sheer breadth of biodiversity found in the Philippines makes the conservation of our riches above and below water all the more urgent. Grace Diamante, Executive Director of the Mindoro Biodiversity and Conservation Foundation, Inc. (MBCFI), and Karen Agabin, Executive Director of Malampaya Foundation, Inc. (MFI), made compelling arguments for the taking action now in order to protect our marine and terrestrial treasures. Ms. Diamante spoke of the plight of the endangered tamaraw, or dwarf water buffalo, and its relationship to the indegenous Mangyan community in Mindoro, and the construction of the Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Center in Puerto Galera. Ms. Agabin spoke about the Philippines as world’s epicenter of marine biodiversity, the importance of marine-protected areas and their shell species restocking through the String of Pearls project, which protects our giant clam population, among others. During the moderated panel discussion, they were joined by Dr. Lota Creencia from the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences of the Western Philippines University in Palawan, and MFI Marine Biologist and Conservation Manager Pacifico Beldia II.

A behind the scenes look at the publishing industry with the people who publish, pick and promote the books you read. As the cliché goes, don’t judge a book by its cover. Indeed, how the words between the covers went from a draft by the author to the book currently in the reader’s hands is a journey that can be simulta neously laborious, frustrating, exciting and rewarding, but it’s almost always interesting.

HERD IMMUNITY:

How Israel Beat Covid-19 June 14, 2021 Monday at 4PM Israel started its COVID vaccination program as early as December 2020. The success against the pandemic lies in bringing in the vaccines early, helped by the fact that Israel has a great public health system with very strong HMOs.

HE Rafael Harpaz Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines

Approximately 5.5 million people in Israel have received the first jab, and more than five million have received the second dose. Israel has a population of 9.3 million. Israel uses only the vaccines manufactured by Pfizer. In the past weeks, the average number of new virus cases per day in Israel stands at 12, down from a daily peak of more than 10,000 in January 2021. After loosening many restrictions including mandatory wearing of masks outdoors, Israel now allows mass gatherings such as concerts and sports events with thousands of spectators. Starting June 1st, all restrictions will be removed, except for the opening of Israel’s borders. Last May, Israel had piloted the entrance of vaccinated tourists. Israel is hopeful that this pilot could expand in the coming months. Already, 30,000 Filipino caregivers, 400 students of agriculture, and the staff of the Philippine Embassy in Israel have received the free Pfizer vaccine. Filipinos with expired working permits were also given vaccine shots.

The world of film promises fame, glamor and wealth. It is often referred to as the Dream Factory and Hollywood is its capital. Yet the reality behind the business of dreams is brutal and unforgiving, and definitely not for the faint of heart. It welcomes the talented, but rewards the hardworking, steely and determined, and more often than not, success in this industry is the result of timing and sheer luck. How do you conquer the odds stacked against a FilipinoAmerican performer, set designer, composer or producer even before you’ve gone to an audition?

Clint Ramos Designer, Educator, Activist and Producer
