ONE YEAR LATER No one ever imagined that a virus related to the common cold would bring the world to a standstill. I remember that day we learned we would have to temporarily close Manila House in compliance with the lockdown that was just declared all over the country. It was the 16th of March 2020. We had already begun wearing face masks then, and would compulsively wash our hands with sanitizer. Overnight we had to recalibrate. Some staff were sent home till further notice. The Filipino restaurant, Anahaw, was turned into a control room, where we monitored the news as compulsively as we washed our hands. We all thought the lockdown would last a month. But the virus had other ideas. One year later, lockdown restrictions have eased somewhat, but the return to normal we were all awaiting is yet to happen. We remain in GCQ for the foreseeable future, which comes with its challenges. It makes us happy to see more and more Members coming into the Club; many of you have remarked that you feel safe with us. For those who still prefer to remain at home, (not including our senior citizen Members as well as children under 14, who are prohibited by the IATF to go out), we understand your hesitation. We only hope that when you feel ready to go out, you will make Manila House your first port of call. It’s been a year of dislocation, confusion and fear. It’s also been a year of solidarity, community and hope.

HOW TO SIGN UP Manila House Rewards is easy and convenient to access. The attached hyperlink https://manila-house.eber.co takes you to the registration/login page. You will be able to log in to your account using the primary email or mobile number connected to your Club membership.

Member Relations Associate

Earl Parma

Meet and greet - that’s what Members Relations Associate Earl Parma does, as his is the first friendly face you see when you enter Manila House

What is your favorite part of being with Manila House’s concierge team? This job goes beyond looking presentable and having a pleasing personality; it also entails building a connection with Members and contributing to their experience of coming to the Club. Being the inquisitive and affable person that I am, I don’t shy away from initiating a conversation. It could be as basic as complimenting a member on his Jordan sneakers, or engaging in intellectual banter with a news anchor. I truly live for moments where genuine connection was established. What was your dream job growing up, and how does it relate to what you’re doing now? I remember all I ever wanted was to be a doctor, for a brief moment I thought of becoming a veterinarian. Honestly I can hardly recall what happened, why I ended up taking HRM. Perhaps it was the influence of my relatives working in cruise ships and hotels. Who are your strongest influences in life, both personally and professionally? I’m the only child and most of my formative years I was attached to my mother probably because she was more of the commander in our family, while my father shows his authority in a subtle manner. Professionally, I have a slew of influences, mainly from business, fashion, music, politics, and pop culture. Lately I have been obsessing over news and current affairs and through my job I have had the honor to meet some of the best news personalities in the industry, people I grew up watching and aspired to be like. How do you maintain a positive outlook amidst the pandemic? Much of my optimism comes from praying more often. It brings me into a better headspace. When you are guided by God, everything else will follow.

5

What is your personal goal for 2021? Health remains to be my top priority. Second is set long term goals that will not only benefit me but also the people closest to me. Lastly, focus my energy towards the things that will build a better version of myself.

POP QUIZ

• My comfort food from Manila House is... without a doubt our Fried Chicken. •M y health and wellness habits are composed of... biking to work, minimizing my use of social media and sufficient amount of sleep. • My ultimate summer dream getaway is... island hopping in Greece, yacht parties in Croatia and helicopter ride along the coasts of Hawaii.

JUNIE PEÑA

Of mixed Lithuanian-American and Filipino parentage, Junie Peña was recently appointed Honorary Consul of Lithuania for the Philippines. A fervent supporter of the arts, the Fordham University graduate is a long-time member of the board of Repertory Philippines. She shares her passion for books and movies - and diplomacy - with her husband Fernando, and daughter Natalia

How did you get involved in consular work? What does your job as Honorary Consul entail?

My father was the Consul for many many years, and when it came time for him to retire, he nominated me and I was thrilled and honored that the Lithuanian government accepted me. As we are not an embassy I cannot issue visas, which is our number one inquiry, but we assist any Lithuanian in the Philippines when they need it. When a citizen is in trouble or taken ill, situations like that. The biggest challenge this past year was when on March 16, the Philippines went into lockdown, hundreds of foreign nationals including Lithuanians, were stranded here with no idea how to get home. So, working with my amazing Ambassador Gediminas Varvuolis in the Lithuanian Embassy in Tokyo, we were able to get them all out. What a way to start my diplomatic career! How has your work been impacted by the pandemic? What about your home/family life?

“Family life has changed in one way: all meals have been at home so I’ve had to become pretty creative.”

Well, as my home is my consulate, that hasn’t changed much, except that we no longer see anyone in person unless it’s a dire emergency, and thank goodness that hasn’t happened yet (knock on wood)! Family life has changed in one way: all meals have been at home so I’ve had to become pretty creative and not bore my family to tears haha! What have been your go-to coping mechanisms to survive the pandemic? Any films and books you highly recommend?

All these wonderful new TV series that have been coming out are a godsend! Like Condor, Bridgerton, 7

MH | I N T E R V I E W

Queens Gambit, Lupin, The Undoing and Defending Jacob, just to name a few. And books are like comfort food to me; once in a while I go for one that will teach me something but mostly I read books that make me happy, or sad, or even scared, but definitely to entertain! At the moment I’m reading a fictionalized story of the first Cosmopolitan cover by Helen Gurley Brown and how it came to define the Cosmo we all know and love, told through the eyes and adventures of her (fictional) new young assistant, it’s called Park Avenue Summer by Reneé Rosen. Next I think I’ll look for the best horror novel I can find. Will you get the vaccine? Where would you like to travel to once international leisure travel is allowed?

I will most definitely get the vaccine, I can’t wait!! Anywhere! Everywhere! Oh my, Bangkok, Madrid, London, and I definitely have missed going to Hong Kong with my friends! Where is your happy place?

Definitely our home in Tali Beach, Batangas. Where we’ve had all our happiest memories and I’m sure many more to come. It was even where my husband and I would see each other when we were dating! So it’s my past, present and future! And to tell you the truth, the Manila Polo Club has been a huge part of my life and I will always feel at home there, and plus Manila House, I’ve had so very many happy memories there already and can’t wait to continue to enjoy its warm cozy atmosphere again!! There’s nothing like a club to make you feel at home!

Junie performing her official duties as Honorary Consul, together with her father, Romualdas Vildzius, whom she recently replaced

We are family: Fernando, Junie and Natalia

PASSAGES

A virtual tour of a landmark retrospective of the work of a Spanish artist who has long called the Philippines home Currently ongoing at The Metropolitan Museum of Manila, is the retrospective exhibition of Betsy Westendorp, a beloved artist born in 1927 in Madrid, Spain. By virtue of her marriage to SpanishFilipino Antonio Brias in the 1950s and a lifetime residency in Manila, Westendorp has through the decades become a perceptive observer and, more importantly, an active participant in the Philippine art scene. As such, Westendorp has produced and shared with the Philippines an astonishing body of works, now highlighted in PASSAGES: Celebrating the Artistic Journeys of Betsy Westendorp. The exhibition gathers Westendorp’s portraits of the society elite of Madrid and Manila, her landscapes of Philippine terrain, seascapes of Manila Bay, her colorful celebration of Philippine flora, especially the various species of the native orchid, and, literally in the sunset of her years, the grand symphonic cloudscapes across Philippine skies. Over 100 artworks of the artist’s illustrious painting career form this retrospective collection, celebrating her journeys that span more than sixty years of prolific art practice.

THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS It all begins with self-love. “You are enough for the universe,” declared Lia Bernardo, aka The Happiness Doctor. The pandemic has impacted our relationships. Being in close proximity to our partners, or in many cases, far apart because of lockdown restrictions, has seen relationships challenged, but strengthened, or totally floundering, or even just in stasis. While the current circumstances may be unusual, Bernardo maintains that the essentials of being a good partner in a good, functioning relationship remain the same. “There’s one great emotional need of every human being in the planet. It’s happiness, regardless of race, economic stature or social position. Everyone wants to be happy, and happiness is the one thing people feel they need to pursue.” Happiness is all about love. And when there is love is always happiness. technically, that love and happiness that we seek from another human being is actually the love and happiness we ought to be cultivating for ourselves. That means cultivating self-love, which according to Bernardo, comes in three stages: self-nurturing, self-acceptance and self-sovereignty.

THE SOCIAL CONTRACT Love it or loathe it, social media is part of our lives. Trolls, bots and haters - not to mention annoying ads - are unfortunately part of the reality of social media today. But, as our panelists, which consisted of the social media analysts Teddy Mapa and Andrea Dudulao of Eon, Alex de Leon of Instagram, social media influencer Macoy Dubs and clinical psychologists Ian Agustin and Mara Yusingco, pointed out, we should be able to make social media work for us and not the other way around. It’s still the primary source of news and current events many people around the world. De Leon spoke from the point of view of a social media platform, and noted that there was a constant effort on their part to refine our preferences so that the app would be more responsive and present content that we’d like to see tweaking the algorithm to suit us, so to speak. Macoy Dubs, whose following on social media grows exponentially by the day, spoke candidly of his usage of social media, the content he posts across various platforms, and how he interacts with his followers. He did note that funny posts tend to get more likes while more controversial or political posts garnered less engagement from his followers, but felt that it was still important to bring up timely and important issues.

A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

The wildlife detective Peter Allison, took our Members’ kids on a virtual safari one afternoon, sharing his exciting adventures in the Africa tracking wild animals, including lions, elephants, leopards, monkeys rhinos and even birds. His all-time favorite animal, he confessed, was the elephant, while he didn’t like crocodiles much. Baboons were interesting to watch, as they were like kids in the way they played and interacted with each other. Safaris, he said, have become family affairs, and children were now very much welcome on the game drives. He also shared lots of practical advice, stressing the importance of being very careful and observant in the presence of animals. And if you see a lion, don’t run! The best thing to do is to stay very still so the lion won’t think of you as prey to be chased and eaten, and thus lose interest in you!

THE VACCINE CHRONICLES Pope Francis has said that we should be vaccinated against COVID-19. “It is the moral choice because it is about your life but also the lives of others.” Our guest speaker, Dr. Benjamin Co, echoed the Pope’s sentiments when he said, after a very informative evidence-based presentation about the various vaccines that have been produced to date, that we all had the obligation to get the vaccine. He expressed no preference for any one vaccine among the ones that are slated to come to the Philippines within the next few months: Pfize-BioNTech, Moderna, OxfordAstra Zeneca, Sinovac and even Sputnik from Russia. Whichever is available when he is scheduled to be vaccinated, he would take, citing the comprehensive empirical data behind each one and the protection they would provide. The noted pediatrician and infectious diseases specialist is familiar with the process of approving drugs and vaccines for general use; previously, he was a director at the Center for Drug Regulation and Research of the Food and Drug Administration of the Department of Health. He reminded attendees to listen to science and the medical professionals: the vaccine will almost certainly reduce rates of COVID transmission, provided a sizable percentage of the population is vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity (ideally 70 percent). However, while rare, you could still get COVID-19 even if you’ve been vaccinated, but you are unlikely to become seriously ill and hospitalized, or die. That alone is reason enough to get the vaccine.
