New Lease We are overwhelmed by all the Members, including Honorary Members, and friends of Manila House, who responded immediately to our fundraising appeal to keep the Club going. Without your support, Manila House would not have had a chance of surviving the challenges of this pandemic. There were, without a doubt, touch and go moments as the lockdown wore on, and it became apparent that Members and guests would not be flocking to the Club anytime soon with large event bookings. It may be another six months before we’re allowed to host big gatherings; in the meantime, the world waits for a vaccine, and businesses must find ways to ride out the crisis and somehow remain solvent. What was most heartwarming in the midst of this crisis was the outpouring of support that came from our Members. After discussing our options with our Investors, it was important that we involved the Members in the decisions we had to make, thus we held a Town Hall, and spoke with honesty about the crossroads in which we found ourselves. Fortunately, the unanimous sentiment was that Manila House was special, and should be saved. And so we begin a new chapter, with a smaller, but revitalized space that includes an inviting new outdoor deck that allows for al fresco dining, safe social distancing and privacy—even shelter from the rain. Your support also means that we are able to keep more staff employed. Thank you, from the bottom of hearts, for believing in Manila House, and helping to keep it going.

Get to Know: Gien Nerona
Sweet or savoury food? I prefer savoury with a little kick of spice
As the GM's right-hand, Gien Nerona, in her composed but determined manner, is like a skilled knitter joining all the threads of the Club into a vibrant quilt How did you come to work at Manila House? I was referred by my former co-worker/friend. I sent in my application and was immediately invited for an initial interview. After hearing nothing back, I called the HR Department, only to be told that there was a hiring freeze. But I was just feeling a little different about this application, I knew Manila House was just for me! Fearlessly, I took my chances and went to Manila House again without a scheduled interview, and it was indeed lucky that I was eventually interviewed by the General Manager (Mr. Jose L. Arcilla) and I got hired! I have been happily working at Manila House as Executive Assistant to the President & General Manager for the last two years. How has that role changed or broadened due to the pandemic? This pandemic has allowed me to learn about being more than just an Executive Assistant. I got to mutlitask with other departments (specifically with the Housekeeping and Maintenance teams. I also got the chance to work with the F&B team for the duration of the Project Food programme. Pre-COVID, what was the best thing about working at Manila House? What do you miss the most about pre-COVID days? During the Pre-COVID days, Manila House’s ambiance was really positively different—outlets packed with Members dining, venues full of daily events, and offices full of my co-employees.
My favorite dishes on the MH menu are Beef Salpicao and Laksa Noodle Soup My idea of a perfect holiday is being with my family in a beautiful beach island/resort with lots of local food and drinks
For me, those are the best things I really miss most about those days. But, I must say, despite the current situation, Manila House never stopped operations, and kept fighting for its Members and employees. Now, after six months of continuously dealing with this pandemic, up to this day, Manila House is still standing strong and radiant! What would you say has been the silver lining in your lockdown experience? This pandemic has given so much negativity to the world but as they say, “In every problem, there is a solution” and God has brought us here because He knows, we can get through it. This crisis made me appreciate and value more even the simplest moments with my family. This lockdown experience also has taught everyone a sense of charity, gratefulness, good-heartedness and most of all, compassion. What can’t you wait to do once the pandemic is over? Once the pandemic is over, I want to go out of town, may be go to a beach resort or just do a staycation.

Carlos Sylianteng
A biologist by training, with a deep interest in the environment, Australia-based consultant Carlos Sylianteng misses the frequent travel his work entails How did you get into the career you’re in? Why did you choose environmental science? I wanted to be an astronaut, but complex math and physics are not my strong subjects. I went with the next best thing and decided to become a scientist. My folks tried to discourage me from following what was perceived to be a nontraditional career outside the academe. But my love for travel and learning about the natural world encouraged me to continue with my decision. 5
I studied biology in Ateneo and focused on Ecology. The rest of the batch ended up as doctors (and earn way more than I do!). After graduation, I went to the UK to continue my masters degree in Environmental Science at the University of Aberdeen. With the advent of climate change awareness and the increased need by companies to secure environmental approvals for their projects, demand for environmental consultants has grown
significantly over the past 15 years. So the gamble paid off in the end. My career is in the professional services consulting world with most of it spent in the Middle East and Australia. The technical work I do consists of project managing multimillion environmental compliance projects for oil and gas and infrastructure clients in Qatar and contaminated land remediation for private and government sector clients in Australia.
MH | I N T E R V I E W
Carlos indulging in a favorite hobby, photography
“Environmental project delivery encourages creative thinking, stakeholder management, decisiveness and problem solving One of the best things about the profession is the travel and variety of work. Environmental project delivery encourages creative thinking, stakeholder management, decisiveness and problem solving. This results in exposure to leadership roles beyond the science background. Nowadays, I still do my science but most of the time is spent leading a team of Aussie consultants and commercial management for the business. Generally a lot of time spent indoors and in meetings, which at times, is a little bit too much for my liking. Where are you based now? How has your work been affected by your inability to travel around as often? How is the study of the environment particularly relevant to what’s happening now?
Most of our projects aim to secure development approvals for major client projects (defence, infrastructure, mining, etc.) or sorting out their environmental issues so they can continue to operate. This enables their work to continue which sustains jobs and therefore the economy. What has kept you sane and busy during the lockdown? Spending time outdoors running, hiking and walking on the beach. Being in the Northern Territory, the population density is so small in comparison to the land area that social distancing almost occurs by default. I also spend time tending to my indoor garden, tiny art collection and a bit of interior decorating. Any authors or movies you can recommend? I am a fan of japanese animation and would recommend watching some light-hearted movies such as A Whisker Away and Weathering With You. Where would you like to travel to once global leisure travel resumes?
My current expat post is in Darwin City at the very north of Australia. I am usually travelling for business internationally or interstate this time of the year. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 situation has thrown a spanner in the works.
Go backpacking in Indonesia or Vietnam. Or spend time on the beach in one of the many Pacific Islands.
It is business as usual for us, environmental issues always happen, COVID or no COVID. We developed creative and innovative ways to deliver work and manage impacts caused by travel restrictions and other industry constraints.
I was attracted to the diversity of its membership base with people from all different professions and walks of life. I love the ambience of the club as a home away from home, which for an expat like myself means a lot.
What attracted you to Manila House? What do you love most about the Club?

Points of Connection The Filipino-American artist JEFRË, who makes Manila House his base when he is in town, opens a blockbuster interactive exhibit in the Orlando Museum of Art in Florida. It’s his first solo museum exhibit JEFRË: Points of Connection is an interactive exhibit featuring 40 new human-scale, site-specific installations and sculptures spread across an 800 square meters of floor space. The artist’s past projects will be displayed alongside a series of sculptures that take visitors through an interactive and personal journey guided by stanzas from “Heart to Heart”, a poem written by JEFRË himself. The collection of immersive installations will explore JEFRË’s personal history as a child of immigrants, survivor of heart disease, and his practice as a city placemaker. This includes pieces from his highly-lauded Talking Heads series, as well as new installations that celebrate cultural symbols. More than an interactive museum exhibit, Points of Connection uses JEFRË’s personal journey to weave a story that illuminates the common human experiences shared across age, gender, ethnicity, and nationality. Additionally, JEFRË: Points of Connection showcases an exciting collaboration with Grammy Awardwinning artist, AYO The Producer’s Sound Art. AYO The Producer’s recent success includes Cardi B’s recordbreaking hit song, “WAP”. 7
Disco Dog by JEFRË
JEFRË: Points of Connection is the artist’s first solo museum exhibit featuring multimedia sculptures and installations that are now signature hallmarks of his practice. The exhibit is presented by Advent Health and Dr. Philipps Charities, with additional support from Monster XP and Mall at Millenia. “Through Points of Connection, I seek to bridge that divide by telling
a highly personal story that speaks to the shared experiences of people, regardless of their background. Now even more, considering the pandemic and everything that has happened in the past year alone,” shares JEFRË. Moreover, Points of Connection makes history as one of the first public museum exhibits set to launch in the United States in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

JEFRË SM Aura Public Art
Illuminated Lake Nona Town Center - Beacon and Code Wall
J E FR Ë : ARTI ST SPOTLIG HT JEFRË is a Filipino-American landscape and public artist. As a graduate of Ohio State University, JEFRË found work with many high-profile clients such as Skidmore Owings and Merrill, Santiago Calatrava, and Philippe Starck. However, JEFRË’s flourishing career was almost cut short when he suffered an unexpected heart attack at the age of 35. Taking a newfound sense of inspiration, JEFRË launched his own firm, StudioJEFRË to work on functional pieces of public art that fosters dialogue between people of all walks of life. “As a Filipino-American who is both proud and aware of his heritage, I make it a point to apply that understanding of shared experiences into all my work,” says JEFRË. “Public art is incredibly powerful and dictates our personal relationships with our home cities. It’s a reflection of our past. With my work, I celebrate the past in a way that embraces the future. We live in such a diverse world and it’s important to me that we not only celebrate the differences, but the similarities as well. And that to me is so powerful because it speaks to us as people without barriers.” Soon after, JEFRË became a firmly-established institution in the art world, with his work recognized by Florida Inside Out. The architecture magazine named him as one of the “Seven Faces of Design” in 2007. Today, JEFRË’s work can be found in multiple destinations worldwide with prominent pieces in Metro Manila, Bicol, New Orleans, San Antonio, London, and Miami. Structures such as The Beacon and The Code Wall in Orlando, Florida, stand as a living tribute to the lives lost at Pulse Nightclub.

Face Mask 101
In the time of Covid, we don't leave home without a face mask. But there's a right way and a wrong way to wear a face mask
W H E N S H O U L D YO U W E A R YO U R M AS K ? Indoors, in crowded situations, particularly where people are speaking loudly, shouting or singing, Also at the supermarket, in shops and anywhere indoors or outdoors where you’re likely to come into contact with people. WHICH MASK IS BEST? Though FFP3 respirator masks provide the maximum protection for the wearer there is a limited supply. For the public, experts advise cloth masks preferably with any kind of tightly woven fabric.
HOW SHOULD IT FIT? According to a study by the University of Edinburgh, masks need to have a tight fit to be really effective. It needs to be fairly snug to block droplets coming out of your mouth.
H OW CA N YO U S TO R E O R CAR RY A MAS K? Even though the chance of picking up an infection from your mask is low, you’ll want to keep it as clean as possible. Experts recommend putting your mask in a Ziploc bag to ensure that is away from everything else. Alternatively wrap it in a scarf.

They’re not designed to be worn more than once. Whereas a cloth mas can have a better fit and can be reused as many times as you like.
Wash your mask after every use. You can either wash your mask at a hot temperature in the laundry or handwash. Though the World Health Organization advises boiling your face mask for one minute if it has been handwashed in room-temperature water.
W H AT S T E P S S H O U L D Y O U TA K E B E FO R E TO U C H I N G YO U R M AS K ?
WHO SHOULDN’T WEAR ONE?
Medical advice says to wash your hands before putting your mask on. When you take your mask off use the straps rather than the front. Try to avoid touching the mask area.
As well as younger children, there are exemptions for some people with health conditions or disabilities and people who assist them. For example, if you are travelling with someone who relies on lip-reading, you are not required to wear a mask. 12

Manila House is more than a restaurant. It’s a club, a community, and a home that preserves and celebrates our evolving Philippine global culture. Its very location at the heart of BGC speaks to the convergence of modern art, unique styling and a taste of the Philippines.
Love at first sight, that’s me with Manila House! Who wouldn’t fall in love with its polished look, artisanal food, utmost privacy, charming staff and gorgeous view?
Manila House has greatly enhanced the quality of life in our community in many ways:
Every corner of the club has become iconic. When bringing guests to the Club, it uplifts the image of the Philippines. The view from the balcony shows the bright future ahead with the swift development of BGC in the last decade.
15
It is a showcase for Filipino talent and culture. I always make it a point to bring foreign guests to the Club as a way for them to experience the best of the Philippines. The webinars are world class. Not only do they cover a wide variety of interesting topics; they provide a wonderful opportunity to learn, question and share ideas with leading experts, from the Philippines and around the world. I can’t underscore enough the value this brings to our community. For me, and I’m sure many others, they represent a core part of the Manila House “brand.”

Sofia Elizalde Manila House is very special to me as I feel it is like an extension of my home. I can walk in anytime, the service is always excellent, they always make a table available, no matter how full, and of course the food, especially the Filipino dishes, are delicious (they feel home-cooked)!
Pops Fernandez I love that it has been consistently serving good food. I love being surprised every time I enter, because you always create such an awesome entrance lobby, upstairs or downstairs.
It’s my go-to place for any occasion, especially the outdoor bar after a long day of work!

I have always liked Gert Voorjans, so I was ‘in’ from Day 1. Plus, I found solace in the quiet, hidden corners of Manila House, to drink my coffee and do work. That’s what I love about Manila House.
I enjoy the range and variety of Manila House talks. It's always been an aspect of the Club that I enjoy whether in realspace or virtual.

The Passion Investment
In times of crisis, art has always presented the astute investor with some attractive opportunities. A pandemic is no different
Jaime Ponce de León on Zoom
Toñico Manahan on Zoom
L
awyer and collector Toñico Manahan, said that investing in art has increasingly been accepted as a valid alternative class of investments, and it is traditionally called a passion investment with both quantifiable and unquantifiable attributes. At a a time like this, he echoed the sentiments of Noah Horowitz, the Director Americas of Art Basel, who said, “One thing we know historically is that crisis yields some of the greatest art of our lives and this is one historical truth above all the historical cliches that we can expect an absolute flourishing of artist’s response to the moment, and many great things to be put out in the coming period.” The founder and director of León Gallery, Jaime Ponce de León, joined in the discussion to provide some interesting insights into the current art market, with tips on how to to start a collection, whether you choose to buy from the primary market (direct from the gallery) or at auction or resale. Manahan provided his own investment strategies, incorporating the new reality of virtual or hybrid auctions and exhibitions. The Call of the Wild
Six months in lockdown has got people itching to travel once more, as soon as it’s safe and feasible to do so. Meanwhile, Manila House Member Binky Dizon of exotic travel specialists A2A Safaris, together with Juan Cristobal del Pedregal of Antarctica 21, Dave van Smeerdijk of Natural Seclections, and Jascivan Carvalho of Tropic Ecuador, certainly whet everyone’s appetite for some of the most stunning, once-in-a-lifetime bucket list destinations that in addition place an emphasis on ecological conservation
W
hile the pandemic has had a definite financial impact on the industry, the good news is that international travel has begun to open up. And in all the properties presented at the webinar, safety measures have been put in place, although as all the panelists noted, guests would definitely enjoy being in the fresh open air—albeit with a bit of a chill in Antarctica!— and they would be far away from crowds. Moreover, rates will not be increased for the 2021 travel season, and for the intrepid traveler, some amazing deals can be had right now for travel next year. Heightened experiences in unusual locales is what adventure travel promises, and post-COVID, as Carvalho pointed out, “people will be looking at more contained, smaller and exclusive experiences.” Family travel will also be big, partly because lockdowns have brought families closer together, but also because the desire to be more active and explore new places together and be in the great outdoors will be strong.
