ABOUT ARTSPACE Artspace is a nonprofit organization that uses the tools of real estate development to create affordable places where artists can live and work. Artspace consistently develops these projects in ways that support stable, healthy communities, anchored in existing assets. Because Artspace owns each of the projects it develops, they can ensure that the spaces remain affordable and accessible to artists in perpetuity. With 50+ projects developed over the last four decades, Artspace has supported artist-led community transformation, representing a more than $800 million investment in America’s arts infrastructure. While embracing the value the arts bring to individual lives, Artspace has championed the once-radical idea that both artists living with financial hardship, and chronically underfunded arts organizations, can leverage fundamental social change. With headquarters in Minneapolis and offices in New York and Washington D.C., Artspace is America’s leading nonprofit developer of arts facilities; and has served as a consultant to hundreds of communities and arts organizations nationwide.

ABOUT NORTHSIDE ARTSPACE LOFTS This year, Artspace’s Annual Fundraising Kick-off event, ARTon! is hosted at our newest project, the Northside Artspace Lofts (NAL). Located in Minneapolis' Harrison Neighborhood, approximately one mile from the Minneapolis Central Business District, NAL is surrounded by the rich cultural heritage that supports the arts and creative sectors. The site is located in a remediated brownfield area that needed redevelopment to better serve the neighborhood and the environment. This development created a new, five-story, 100 apartments of live workspace for artists. All apartments are affordable for residents earning 60% or below the Area Median Income. Rich with amenities available to all residents, including a large gallery at the main entrance, community workspace, community gathering areas, outdoor arts engagement and child play areas, resident community, and pollinator gardens, NAL looks to foster a healthy creative community while preserving the values of North Minneapolis. *The Northside Artspace Lofts were designed by Twin Cities’ LHB Architects and built by General Contractor Watson Forsberg.

OPEN ARTIST UNITS LIST LAURA STAMPER  PAINTER & ILLUSTRATOR UNIT #418 Laura Stamper describes her work with one word, Evolution. Her background is in illustration and painting. She has explored a sculpture in ceramics. These skills are the foundation for her figurative jewelry pieces. For many years, Laura incorporated porcelain sculpture with metal work. These miniatures are easily recognizable and are in collections worldwide. Laura's progression into enamel work seemed inevitable. Her current body of work is a marriage of elegance and the unexpected. The contemporary movement of the metalwork is in sharp contrast to the primitive elements of rough stones and the elegance of enamels. She is always looking for new ways to express herself through her art. During the Covid quarantine, Laura returned to her roots of painting. Her focus is in portraiture and is currently taking commissions for pet portraits.

Papa MBye Visual artist, rapper, singer based in North Minneapolis. MBye began taking drawing seriously as a teenager, where he’d go to the park, set up shop, and draw caricatures for willing passerby. It was a hustle, but the mischievous exaggeration also provided a much-needed valve. He had been raised to be quiet and dutiful since his family had immigrated from The Gambia/Senegal to North Minneapolis when he was two years old. To push his work, he joined a creative collective called Young Vision led by his classmate Gabe Hostetler, who has produced videos for local hip-hop artists Drelli, Malik Augustus and Lux & Longley. Like the best caricature artists do, Papa Mbye pays homage to the source material, while showing us something we’ve never seen before.
