C
Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) The airport consists of a single terminal building with seven connected concourses. There can be quite a long walk from your gate to the arrival area. International Flights
Domestic
Prior to landing, you will be given an immigration form and customs declaration to complete, so keep a pen, your passport and note of your hotel address within easy reach.
After disembarking, follow the signs to luggage reclaim. Collect your bags and exit to the arrival area. You will pass through Exit A.
After disembarking the airplane, follow the signs to luggage reclaim. You will eventually arrive at the immigration area. Expect queues during busy periods. Present your immigration card and passport to an officer. Immediately behind immigration is the baggage reclaim area. Locate your luggage and proceed through customs. Custom officers randomly select bags to be put through an x-ray machine.
HOT TIP - There are TWO exits from custom into the arrival area: Exit B and C. If you are meeting someone, agree in advance which exit you will use. A ‘Meeting Point’ is signposted in the arrival area; however, this is located further down the terminal building and not particularly convenient for international passengers.
Licensed Taxis
Airport Link
Once in the arrival hall, go down one floor and exit the building. Go to the official taxi booth where you will be asked your destination (in English) and assigned to a taxi by a dispatcher. The dispatcher will give you a ticket with the taxi’s registration number written on it. Keep this in case you have a complaint or if you accidently leave something in the car.
Three train services operate from the airport to downtown Bangkok.
In addition to the fare on the meter, there is an airport surcharge of 50 baht and expressway tolls of 65 baht. The total cost, including the surcharge and tolls is likely to be around 300 to 400 baht depending on downtown destination. Some drivers may ask for toll money in advance so have some small change available (such as a 100 baht note). Journey time can be anything between 40 minutes and 2 hours depending on the traffic conditions. Most taxis do not have seat belts and are driven very fast. Luggage space in the trunk is usually limited as most taxis are fitted with an LPG tank.
Express trains take 15 minutes to travel non-stop to Makkasan Station (which is a short walk to the MRT) or Payathai Station (which has a connection with the BTS). A 14-days round-trip express train ticket costs 150 baht while a one-day single express train ticket cost 90 baht. The Payathai route is more useful with direct interchange with BTS Skytrain. A City train to Payathai takes 30 minute and costs 45 baht could be a convenient option if you are travelling light. AOT Official Airport Limo Service Recommended for first time visitors. Look for the official AOT service desks in the baggage hall of the arrivals area. The price for a standard salon starts at 1000 baht to downtown Bangkok including motorway tolls. Pay at the AOT service desk and receive an official receipt. You will be escorted to your car. Generally higher driving standards and seat beats! Avoid all others trying to sell taxi or limoservices.

Getting around Bangkok Taxi Taxis are cheap and plentiful, 24 hours a day. Strangely, a RED light in the front windscreen means the taxi is available for hire. The meter starts at a very reasonable 35 baht, with no official surcharges for nights or weekends. A small tip is expected. Most drivers do not speak English. If your destination is a well-known hotel, shopping mall, or street like Silom, then it is likely the driver will understand you. Speak slowly and clearly. If not, jump out and try another. Express ferry The ferry route starts from a pier underneath Saphan Taksin BTS station, passing many of Bangkok landmarks such as the old Oriental hotel, Memorial Bridge, Grand Palace, and Temple of Dawn. It is a great way to see the best of Bangkok from a different perspective, especially at dawn. The ferry runs along the right bank of the river (with smaller ferries crossing the river at each stopping point) and runs until 7pm only. Major hotels along the river offer free shuttle service to/from this pier.

The fastest and most comfortable way to travel around the city centre – particularly during rush hour. You can buy single-journey tickets from the vending machines. For multiple trips, it is more economical and convenient to use a "Rabbit Card" which can be purchased at the counter for a minimum of 200 baht (includes 50 baht deposit and 50 baht for the card). Weather
Getting it in Bangkok
The generally cooler (25ºc - 30ºc) and more comfortable months are mid-November through to end of February, although there may only be a couple of genuinely cool days during these months. Summer really kicks in during April and May with temperatures reaching 40ºc or more. The hot and humid rainy season lasts from May until October. And when it rains, it really does rain. Frequent and fierce.
What to wear and pack Day wear – Shorts, jeans, tee shirts, polo shirts combined with trainers, comfortable shoes or sandals . A cap or hat to cover your head is essential. Temple wear – If you are planning to visit a temple or the Grand Palace then you must wear clothes that cover your legs and arms. Evening wear (restaurant / bars) – Jeans or slacks, tee shirt or polo shirt, trainers or casual shoes. Club wear – Shorts or jeans, tee shirts or tank tops, trainers or similar. Clubs will refuse entry if you are wearing sandals or flip flops. Business wear – Smart trousers and open-neck formal shirt. Ties and jackets are not normally worn unless it’s a very formal environment. Sauna wear – towels will be provided but bring your own flip flops.
HOT TIP - Wine, in particular champagne, is very expensive in Thailand. You are permitted to bring 1 litre into the country duty free, and we recommend you make use of this allowance. Buy duty free at the point of departure. Spirits such as gin and vodka, and cigarettes are relatively cheap in Thailand and not worth importing.
Travel Gay Asia gone mobile! Now optimised for iPhones, Android, Blackberry & Windows phones. Find the best bars, clubs, saunas & spas. View maps, get directions & download our latest offers on the move.
“Bangkok has a very vibrant gay scene, from bars and night clubs to saunas and massage spas” Bangkok’s established and lively mainstream gay scene consists of bars, nightclubs and men-only saunas where you can meet a wide variety of gay guys from both Thailand and abroad. A few of these venues are more popular with Asians who are attracted to Asians, but generally speaking, everyone is welcome. Most gay Thais that you meet will be well-educated and speak very good English. Making new friends or picking up will simply be down to mutual attraction. Culture and Customs
Don’t get angry, keep a smile on your face.
Thais have their own distinct cultural heritage and social norms. Whilst many Thais have learnt to accept foreigner attitudes, you will earn a lot more respect by remembering these two specific points.
Thais place a great deal of emphasis on avoiding confrontation and endeavouring not to embarrass either themselves or other people. Raising your voice or acting in an aggressive manner (for example towards bar staff or a waiter in a restaurant) will be viewed by your companion / date as rude and embarrassing. In any case, such an approach is unlikely to resolve any difficulties you might have.
Keep the passion private. Public displays of affection, gay or straight, are generally frowned upon. Trying to stick three inches of tongue down your new Thai friend’s throat in a public place (including a gay bar or club) is likely to cause him to choke with embarrassment.
Sex wear - Condoms are widely available in Bangkok, however, the choice of lubricants is limited so bringing your own is a good idea. Poppers are not sold in Thailand.
“If you are planning to visit a temple or the Grand Palace, then you must wear clothes that cover your legs and arms.”

Silom - The main gay in area in Bangkok. Most of the bars and clubs are located either in or close to Soi 2 (Street 2)and Soi 4. The closest BTS Station is Sala Deang on the Silom Line. Silom Soi2 Patio Disco Disco JJ Park

Silom Soi 2 The 100%-gay Soi 2 has a narrow entrance with a bag check and metal detector. The minimum age is 20 years old. If you are lucky enough to be or look younger than 30, then we recommend bringing photo ID – particularly if you are Asian. Soi 2 consists of a number of nominally different bars. However, as the night progresses the patrons of the The Patio, Club Café, Disco Disco, The Expresso and JJ Park move back and forward between each venue, along with their drinks. The bars get busy from around 11pm onwards. Tank tops and shorts are fine, but you will not get in wearing flip flops or similar.
Popular street with a selection of gay bars, restaurants and a few shops. Usually gets busy from around 9pm – 10pm. Telephone Pub One of the oldest and most established gay bars in Bangkok. Serves food from 6pm. Outside terrace with an ‘at seat’ drinks service. The Balcony Directly opposite from Telephone Bar. Most customers sit outside on the terrace. Sphinx Restaurant and bar Serving a nice variety of Thai food and drinks. Open from 6pm to 2am. (mixed) The Stranger Bar New York style bar offering premium cocktails, energy beats and good times in a modern, stylish atmosphere. You can lounge in the main bar, sip cocktails in the mezzanine or have a group party on the 2nd floor with private balcony.
One Night Only The huge chandelier, cool lighting system and modern décor, a small bar and dance floor with live DJ on the ground level give this place a high-end vibe that appeals both local and foreign clientele. Bas Boutique Room This intimate bar has a well-earned reputation for mixing some of the best cocktails in Soi 4. (mixed) Sugar Bowl Intimate gay-owned restaurant. Tasty Thai and Western eats. A nice terrace from which to see the comings and goings on the street. 6pm to 1am daily. (mixed) Bearbie A funky karaoke that is probably the only hang out spot for bears in Thailand. Popular with both Asian and foreigner bears. For Fun Features live music, DJ, dance floor and occasional fashion show upstairs. Drinks and food are reasonably priced food. Reasonably priced food and drinks. (mixed)
Late-night munchies? 2am and feeling a bit peckish? Fancy a quick bite before G Bangkok? Try Nooddi – located at the entrance to the side street to G Bangkok. Quick, cheap Westerner friendly dishes.
DJ Station Long-running dance club located at the end of the Soi 2 alley, attracting a range of Thais and foreigners. The place is busy every night of the week and packed solid on weekends. Tourists are usually charged an entrance fee (200 baht) but are given coupons for two free drinks (which would cost 100 baht each anyway). Westerners and Asians who want to mix with Westerners tend to head for the second floor. The ground floor, particularly around the stage, tends to be more popular with Asians who prefer Asians. Closing time can vary but is usually around 3am.
G Bangkok Formerly known as G.O.D. (Guys On Display), G Bangkok is one of the best gay dance clubs in town. There are three floors although, most people tend to stay on the ground and 2nd floor. Harder dance music is delivered by talented DJ’s that quickly get the muscle-packed dance floor and stage heaving. Gets busier after 2am as DJ Station starts to wind down. Entrance fee (usually around 300 Baht) gets you two-drink tickets. G Bangkok is also ‘home’ to DJ Spectrum K – who we think is the hottest resident DJ on the Bangkok gay scene.
DRUGS The penalties for possession or consumption of illegal drugs are severe. Police will occasionally raid bars and clubs and carry out spot checks including urine tests. Anyone testing positive will be arrested and will face prosecution.
Getting Home Taxis are always available in Silom. Unfortunately, most drivers that wait just outside the clubs will quote a price that exceeds what you would be expected to pay on the meter. Haggle a bit if you are up to it, or just cross the street and flag down a passing taxi. Remember that after 10 vodka red bulls YOU might think you can pronounce the name of your hotel in perfect Thai, but the driver will probably not understand a word of what you are slurring. Take a card with your hotel name and address written in Thai and hand it to the driver. Better still, leave with someone who speaks the language.

Soi Twilight (also known as – Soi Pratuchai) is a gay ‘red light’ entertainment street, located off Surawong Road (almost directly opposite to Patpong). The street is home to a number of go-go dance bars that can be fun to watch – if not taken too seriously. The content can range from erotic dancing to routines that leave only a little to the imagination. Eating out Eating out is a way of life in Bangkok. There are literally thousands of places to get something to eat from street vendors to Michelin-starred ultra cool restaurants, so you are going to be spoilt for choice. Most people tend to have dinner between 7pm to 10pm. Some restaurants around Silom will stay open much later. There is no real dress code for restaurants in Bangkok. Casual wear is pretty much ok everywhere. Until a few years ago, tipping was entirely at the discretion of the customer. Today expect 10% to be added to your bill. If in any doubt, ask if a service charge has been added.

Gay day tours
Things to do in Bangkok
So you fancy a change of scenery for a day? Here are a couple of our favourite gay day tours from Bangkok. Ayutthaya Visit the stunningly beautiful and ancient capital of Siam. Explore the palaces, temples and monuments of what was once a prosperous city. Highlights include visiting the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace and garden and the Ayutthaya Historical Park. Organised day trips can be booked through the concierge of most hotels
The Ancient City and Croc Farm If you are in a rush but would like to see all the best cultural bits of Thailand, then The Ancient City at Samut Prakarn is the place for you. This park features very good replicas of some of Thailand’s most historical sites. Then cross the road to visit Samut Prakarn Crocodile Farm for some exciting man on reptile wrestling action. See http://www.ancientcity.com for more details. Most taxi drivers will drive you to Samut Prakarn and wait until you are ready to return.
Dusit Palace Area
The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew ‘Emerald Buddha Temple’ Floating Market This floating Walmart is located about 100km outside the city. Heavily promoted by tour organisers and a bit of a tourist trap. Unless you have something better to do, this may be worth going once to walk around and try some local foods.
Probably the most visited tourist destination in Bangkok. Spread over 50 acres the palace and its stunning temples give a unique insight into the history and culture of Thailand. Wear trousers or jeans and a top that covers your shoulders. 90% outdoors, so sun protection is essential.
Pattaya Beach and boys. A potent combination that is less than 2 hours drive from Bangkok. Head for the north end of Jomtien Beach. This part of the beach is very gay and gets busier as the afternoon progresses. There are a number of beach bars catering to the gay community. Many Bangkok taxi drivers will be happy to wisk you to Pattaya for around 1200 – 1500 baht one way. Most taxi drivers in Pattaya will be happy to bring you back to Bangkok for the same sort of fee.
Wat Pho
Or perhaps a weekend break? Check out the beautiful Samed Island located just off the coast near Rayong – three hours by car from Bangkok. Increasingly popular gay weekend destination. See http://www.travelgayasia.com/ destination/gay-thailand/gay-samed/ for more details.
Wat Pho, also known as ‘The Temple of the Reclining Buddha’, is located within walking distance of the Grand Palace. The Buddha measures over 46 meters long, 15 meters high and is covered in gold leaf. A popular place to learn Thai massage, so if you have time time, relax in the hands of a real expert. Wat Arun This Khmer-style temple is located on the bank of the Chao Phraya river on the opposite side of Wat Pho. It is one of Bangkok’s most famous landmarks. It looks especially remarkable in the evening when the spot light shines on. Watching from the ferry is another way to enjoy the view.
Vimanmek Teak Mansion Museum, built in 1897 as a summer palace for the Royal family is now open to the public, including the Royal bed chamber, bathroom and audience hall. The beautiful Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall was commissioned by King Rama V in 1906 and took 9 years to complete. It has exquisite paintings that depict the history of the Chakri Dynasty from Kings Rama I to Rama VI.
Thai kickboxing Also known as Muay Thai, Thai kickboxing originated in the early part of the Ayutthaya period as a form of unarmed combat. Today, it is a professional sport with training camps located in just about every province. Where to see a fight: Lumpini Stadium. Rama IV Road. Essential shopping Bangkok is big on shopping. Really big. Here is our list of the most popular mega malls and department stores. Siam Area MBK Centre - BTS National Stadium
Siam Paragon - BTS Siam
Seven massive floors of shopping mayhem. This hugely popular mall is a rabbit warren of stalls and shops that sell pretty much everything. Particularly good for cheap tee shirts, fake designer jeans, mobile phones and gold. There is a bowling alley and multi screen cinema on the top floor. If you need some time out from this intense shopping experience, head to the lobby cafe of the attached Pathumwan Princess Hotel accessible via the ground floor. 10am-10pm
Enough world class retailers and brands to keep the most demanding gay shopper happy for hours. Fashion, lifestyle, living, technology and luxury - it's all here. There is a huge range of food options from simple rice dishes through to up-market restaurants and a gourmet supermarket. There is a popular bowling alley and exceptionally good cinema complex (including an Imax theatre) on the top floor. 5% tourist discount card available at information desk. 10am-10pm
Siam Discovery - BTS National Stadium Not the biggest (only about 200 shops) and not the best, but Siam Discovery does have an eclectic mix of Asian designer shops and speciality stores as well as The Madame Tussaud's museum on the 6th floor. Siam Center - BTS Siam Bangkok’s long-running mall and landmark for fashion and lifestyle. Siam Center is filled with local designers shops, boutiques, international brands, as well as trendy restaurants and cafés. Completely renovated in 2012, Siam Center reopened in January 2013 with an updated look. More popular with a younger crowd and students. Plenty of virus loaded pirated software for sale that is best avoided. (delete until Generally 10:30am) Central Plaza / Central World - BTS Siam Claims to be Asia’s largest shopping mall with over 500 shops and 100 restaurants occupying more than half a million square meters of retail space. 5% tourist discount card available. 10am-10pm
Chitlom Area Gaysorn Plaza -BTS Chitlom Pure luxury, darling. Welcome home. We are talking over 100 stores including the likes of Prada, Gucci, Dior, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, as well as high-end Thai art and crafts. Most stores at Gaysorn will discount if you ask discreetly. Take the hotel’s limo or slum it on the skytrain to Chidlom then use the raised walkway which is directly connected to the mall. Central Chitlom - BTS Chitlom This department store is directly accessible from the Chitlom BTS station. All the usual departments. The Food Loft on the 5th floor is worth a special mention. Great range of Western and Asian food counters. 5% tourist discount card available at information desk. 10am-10pm
Petchaburi Road Area Pantip Plaza - Phetchaburi Road Homo-techo? Pantip Plaza is the place for you. Five floors of technology, including computers, digital cameras, printers, accessories, and surveillance equipment to keep an eye on the boyfriend. So whether you desire a plug for your socket or a complete system upgrade - chances are you will find it here. There are shops that do on the spot computer repairs cheaply and quickly. Plenty of pirated software for sale, but be warned - you might end up with more than you bargained for. Play safe and keep those viruses away from your hard disk. Generally 10:30am - 7:30pm Platinum Shopping - Phetchaburi Road This mall is packed with hundreds of stalls and shops selling clothes. There must be millions of tee shirts, shorts, and trousers in this place. Cheap and cheerful. 10am-10pm.

The Greyhound Cafe, tucked away on the 2nd floor offers an interesting menu. 5% tourist discount card available at information desk. Terminal 21 - BTS Asoke or MRT Sukhumvit Nine floors of shops, with a design concept that is based on famous cities from around the world such as Rome, Paris, San Francisco, Tokyo, etc. Particularly well-known for having numerous dining options and a huge range of clothing stores.
12
Other Shopping Areas Chatuchak Weekend Market - BTS - Mochit An amazing 15,000 stalls spread over 35 acres makes this one of the biggest outdoor markets in the world. A real shopping experience. Open Saturdays and Sundays. Wear light clothing, a hat and plenty of antiperspirant. Patpong Night Market - BTS - Saladaeng For the gay traveler, Patpong is almost impossible to miss - given its location between the two main gay streets in Silom. The market operates Tuesday to Sunday, from around 7pm to around midnight. The market stalls sell a wide range of fake 'designer' clothing, accessories, bags, and of course, watches. Mixed up with these stalls are a few selling reasonable Thai arts and craft products. Bargain hard - and expect to walk away before getting the best offer shouted at you. Generally safe, but like all busy markets, be aware of your wallet and personal belongings.

Money
Tax refunds
The currency is the Thai baht. Visa, MasterCard and Amex cards are widely accepted in Bangkok, tourist destinations and all hotels. You will not have a problem finding cash dispensers. Some shops will ask for additional ID when you pay with plastic.
Foreigners can reclaim 7% sales tax on larger purchases made in Thailand when leaving the country. Most department stores operate the Tax Refund Service. We suggest that you take a photocopy of your passport when shopping as you will need your passport number and other details to fill out the tax refund form.
Foreign exchange booths can be found in all parts of the country at major department stores and at most branches. You may be asked for photo ID. DO NOT exchange your cash at the hotel. Exchange rates at hotel are generally far worse than at Foreign exchange booths or banks.
Exchange rates are usually much better in Thailand than abroad. A slightly better rate is usually offered
On departure, go to the Tax Refund counter at the airport BEFORE checking in your luggage as you may be required to show the customs officer the goods you are taking out of the country. Then check in, pass through immigration and find the Tax Refund office in the duty free shop area where you will be given a cash refund.
Recommended SuperRich - Operates a number of branches close to Central World. Usually offers some of the very best exchange rates. Open from 9am to 6pm. You will need photo ID. Check www.superrich1965.com/app/our_rat es.aspx for rates.
It is possible to extend a tourist visa for a further 7 days at The Govenment Complex Building Commemorating His Majesty , B Building , Floor 2 (South Zone) Chaengwattana Road (Soi 7) , Laksi , Bangkok 10210 (Telephone : 0-2141-9889). Office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 - 12:00 and 13:00 - 16:30. The office is inconveniently located outside of downtown Bangkok. The best way to get there is by taxi. This is a busy office and we recommend arriving as early in the day as possible. Expect a wait of at least 1 hour. A fee of 1500 baht is payable. There are usually plenty of taxis available to bring you back to your hotel. If you want to stay longer, or if you hold a passport not listed above, then obtain a visa at your local Thai embassy in advance. If you do happen to overstay, expect a fine and delay at immigration when leaving the country. Allow extra time.

Phone & internet GSM phones work in Thailand, but using your own mobile to make a call or connect to the internet can be expensive. If you cannot contemplate a week without email, Facebook, Gaydar, or Grindr then consider buying a Thai SIM card. SIM and micro SIMS (for iPhone users) are widely available Bangkok on a ‘Pay As You Go’ basis. The SIM card will cost around 100 baht, but the price will include some credit. One-Two-Call from AIS offers some of the best rates for international calls. Virtually all hotels offer internet access, and most Wi-Fi, usually free of charge to guests.
Recommended There are numerous SIM card outlets on the 4th floor of the MBK Center.
