Introduction Hong Kong consists of four main areas. These are:Hong Kong Island – Home to an amazing number of tall buildings along Victoria Harbour water front. Kowloon – The peninsula opposite Hong Kong Island on the other side of Victoria Harbour. One of the most densely populated places on the planet! The New Territories – To the north of Kowloon and often ignored by tourists who unfortunately miss this diverse, partly mountainous landscape. The Outlying Islands – All the other bits of Hong Kong to the south including Lantau Island (home to Disneyland) and Hong Kong International Airport Island.

The gay scene is mostly focused in:

Tipping is not expected by taxi drivers, but passengers will usually round the fare up the nearest dollar. In hotels a tip of $10 – $20 for a porter carrying your bags or waiter delivering a room service tray is the norm. Upmarket restaurants are likely to add a compulsory 10% service charge and this should be regarded as the tip.

Language Most Hong Kong people speak Cantonese as their ﬁrst language. However, English is also widely understood and spoken in the gay community. Learning a few words of Cantonese for ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ will go a long way.

Electricity British style 3-pin plugs running at 220V / 50 hertz. Adapters are widely available and loaned in most hotels.

Shopping hours Shopping malls and most other shops are open from 10am to 8pm seven days a week.

Climate

Drinking water

Hong Kong has a winter, summer, spring and autumn. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to December) are generally considered the best times to visit – from a weather point of view – with temperatures averaging around 25˚c.

Tap water is drinkable unless you are staying in an old building. However, in practice most tourists will purchase bottled water.

Winter (December to February) can be quite cool, with a sweater needed during the day and coat in the evening. Summer (June to September) can be hot and very wet, with occasional typhoons that bring the city to a standstill for a day or so. http://www.travelgayasia.com

Medical care Hong Kong has excellent, world class, medical facilities. But they are expensive and you will be expected to pay. Suitable travel insurance is strongly recommended. Doctors that practice western medicine are almost certainly going to speak English. Most doctors will be able to sell you medicine, and will accept credit cards (check when making an appointment).

At the airport Hong Kong International Airport is one of the world's most modern airports offering direct access to train, bus, taxi and hotel transport, as well as high-speed ferries to Mainland China. Most visitors can obtain a visa on arrival, but a separate visa, applied for in advance, is required if you want to visit mainland China. Technically, tourists should carry their passport with them at all times, but in practice, it’s better to keep it locked in your hotel room safe and carry a photocopy of the details in your wallet.

To and from airport Getting to and from Hong Kong International Airport is easy and relatively inexpensive. Train The Mass Transit Railway's (MTR) Airport Express takes approximately 24 minutes to Hong Kong Island and is the fastest transport link to the airport. Airport Express passengers can take a free shuttle bus from Kowloon and Hong Kong stations to major hotels. Both stations provide free in-town check-in services for major airlines. Taxi Taxis are readily available in front of the Arrivals Hall. Take a red taxi unless travelling only to Lantau (blue) or the New Territories (green). Fares are metered and details of fares and extra charges are clearly displayed. Bus There are 12 convenient Airbus “A” routes that can take you to key locations on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and New Territories including Lantau Island with fewer stops than an ordinary city bus. When you exit the Arrivals Hall, turn right for Airbuses and city buses.

Getting around Hong Kong has an excellent public transport system, consisting of the MTR (an underground and overground railway system), trams (northern coast of Hong Kong Island), buses, and ferries. There is no shortage of taxis which are generally clean, efﬁcient and cheap.

Hong Kong has a thriving gay bar and dance club scene. Most are concentrated in Central and Causeway Bay (on Hong Kong Island) and in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon. 1 Zoo Bar Feel like a party animal? This lion’s den attracts the party crowd intent on a great night out. Relatively small, but stylish black interior, fabulous cocktails and sizzling music make this one of the most popular bars in Hong Kong on Friday and Saturday nights when the crowd overflows onto the street outside. Gay-popular beaches Hong Kong does not have a dedicated ‘gay beach’, however there are a number of beaches that tend to attract more gay sun worshippers than others. All the beaches we have listed tend to be more popular at weekends.

Middle Bay Beach, Hong Kong Island

This is the most popular gay beach in Hong Kong attracting both locals and some visitors. Not directly accessible by public transport. Either take a taxi or walk from Repulse Bay. Bauhinia Beach Club is a popular bar / café immediately behind the beach. 2

South Bay Beach, Hong Kong Island

Less busy that Middle Bay but still popular with tourists and locals. The gay section is to the left hand side of the beach. Like Middle Bay Beach, there is no direct public transport, so either take a taxi or walk from Repulse Bay (past Middle Bay Beach). 3

Cheung Sha Beach, Lantau Island

Cheung Sha beach, on the south coast of Lantau Island, is one of Hong Kong’s longest and most beautiful beaches – split in to two sections by a rocky outcrop. Attracts mostly local gay sunbathers close to the rocky outcrop itself.

1 Central Escalator One of longest-operating saunas in Hong Kong – but relatively small and a bit dated compared with some newer venues. Features a steam room, dry sauna and jacuzzi (all small) and a very limited number of relaxation rooms. CE attracts a varied international clientele of Westerners and tourists. The place can be a little difﬁcult to ﬁnd as there are no signs outside. The entrance is on Gage Street. 3 My Way Sauna Reasonable-sized sauna with steam room, dry sauna and lounge. Tends to attract younger Asian customers. Sunday afternoon is ‘towel free’. 4 QQ Fitness QQ Fitness has been a part of the Hong Kong sauna scene for over 10 years. The sauna attracts a mostly Asian crowd. Features include a dry sauna, steam room, dark room and a number of relaxation cabins. Open 24 hours a day but gets busier in evenings. King Dao Building name is only shown in Chinese, but the entrance is easy to spot. Look for a big light box with QQ Fitness logo. The views from the Peak are breathtaking, offering (on a clear day) a stunning panorama of the city. There are beautiful walking trails that wind through the lush tropical forest of Victoria Peak Garden. The Peak Tower (an architectural icon in its own right) has a 360-degree viewing platform and offers a variety of restaurants and shops. Get to The Peak on the Peak Tram – originally built in 1888. This seven-minute scenic ride offers a uniquely spectacular perspective of the city.

Disneyland A 310-acre amusement park with a fabulous range of rides and adventures in four themed parks (Main Street USA, Fantasyland, Advertureland and Tomorrowland). This is where the big kid in us all can be unleashed! Disneyland is located on Lantau Island. The best way to get to Disneyland is on the MTR from Central (30 minutes).

Giant Buddha at Po Lin Monastery At 34 metres high, this is the world’s tallest outdoor seated bronze Buddha image. It is located at the Po Lin Monastery on Lantua Island. The Monastery dates from 1924 and features a number of interesting temples and other structures. The Big Buddha is open to the general public between 10am – 6pm. The best way to get to Po Lin Monastery is via the Ngong Ping 360 cable car from MTR Tung Chung Station.

Symphony of Lights The world’s largest permanent light and laser show, featuring 44 buildings on both sides of Victoria Harbour. The show is held every night at 8pm and lasts around 14 minutes. The best vantage points are the Avenue of Stars on Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront.

Nan Lian Garden The Nan Lain Garden is a 3.5 acre park that opened in 2006 based on the Jianshouju Garden in Shanxi Province. This beautiful garden offers a peaceful retreat from the city. Nan Lian Garden is located east of the Diamond Hill MTR station. It is open daily from 7am to 9pm. Free entry.

Hong Kong Museam of History Opened in 1975, this museum preserves and showcases Hong Kong’s historical cultural heritage through 8 galleries displaying over 4,000 exhibits enhanced with special audio-visual and lighting effects. The exhibition tells the story from the Devonian period 400 million years ago and concludes with the reuniﬁcation of Hong Kong with China in 1997. Located on Cheong Wan Road in Kowloon.
