Singapore has a comprehensive bus network and majority of the drivers speak English. Thanks to the hot and humid weather, all buses are air-conditioned so that you get to enjoy a comfortable journey.

Fares range from SGD $0.80 to SGD $3.50. Drop the exact amount into the farebox (no change will be given) or tap your EZ-Link or Tourist Pass when you board.

The nearest station to the gay nightlife in and around Chinatown is Tanjong Pagar Station. Taxi Taxis use meters and are reasonably priced and generally honest. Can be difďŹ cult to ďŹ nd during peak times.

Republic of Singapore The modern history of Singapore began in 1819 when Englishman Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a British colony on the island. Singapore was granted self-rule in 1955, briefly joined Malaysia in 1963 but became independent again on 9 August 1965. Over the past few decades, Singapore has experienced a rapid economic boom and has become one of the wealthiest and most developed in Asia. Although Singapore is a relatively small state with over 5 million residents it still has more than 50% of its land mass covered by greenery and over 50 parks preserving its reputation as a ‘garden city’.

Singapore’s Main Districts Riverside / Central Business District The north bank of the Singapore river is where Raffles landed and founded his colony. The area is now home of many central government departments. The south bank is dominated by skyscrapers. Between these two areas are Singapore's riverside nightspots of Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson. Chinatown Chinese heritage area Much of Chinatown is protected for conservation, particularly the traditional shop houses that have unique baroque and Victorian architecture. Chinatown is also home to most of Singapore’s gay life. Little India Indian shopping with a heady scent of spices, silverware, ethnic jewelry and silk saris. Bugis and Kampong Glam

Sentosa Resort island Home to hotels, Universal Studio theme park and beaches.

a heritage Malay district, much of which has been taken over by shopping. Orchard Road — Shopping. Enough said.

Marina Bay Beautiful bay area and home of the famous Singapore Flyer, Helix Bridge and some of Singapore finest hotels.

Balestier, Newton, Novena and Toa Payoh Cheaper hotels and temples. East Coast The airport and large residential area. North and West Residential and industrial areas. http://www.travelgayasia.com

Being Gay in Singapore Gay Rights Singapore is one of the few remaining developed nations where sex between two males remains illegal. Same-sex marriages are not permitted. Overseas same-sex marriages are not recognised. In practice, gay people are not prosecuted and gay venues are permitted to operate freely without too much interference. The exception to this is large scale gay dance parties. In 2007, the Prime Minister indicated that it is only a matter of time before gay sex is decriminalised. The annual LGBT rights “Pink Dot” festival has grown in strength in recent years. Whilst coming out to one’s own family or work colleagues as being gay is still a difficult thing for many Asian gay men, Singapore’s wider population generally accept the gay community. The Gay Scene Despite the continued existence of colonial era laws on homosexuality, a thriving and confident gay scene has developed consisting of gay bars, clubs, saunas and spas mostly concentrated in and around Chinatown. Freedom of Speech There is no freedom of speech in Singapore so making defamatory comments about the government or the judiciary in public is not a good idea.

Climate Singapore has a tropical climate with no distinctive seasons. Temperatures can vary between 23c to 32c and it rains on average around 13 to 19 days per month. April and May tend to be the hottest months and it’s usually wetter between November to January.

Language Most Singaporeans can speak English. Singapore's other official languages are Mandarin Chinese and Tamil. Mandarin is spoken by most younger Singaporean Chinese, while Tamil is spoken by most Indians.

Drugs The death penalty is mandatory for those convicted of trafficking, manufacturing, importing or exporting more than 15g of heroin, 30g of cocaine, 500g of cannabis, 200g of cannabis resin or 1.2kg of opium. Unauthorised consumption can result in a maximum of 10 years' jail or fine of $20,000, or both. You can be charged if illegal drugs are found in your system, even if you can prove that they were consumed outside Singapore. You can be charged if drugs are found in your hotel room even if they are not yours.

MRT Tanjong Pagar The Singapore gay bar and club scene has evolved rapidly over the past few years and offers plenty of opportunity for fun nights out. Here are some of the more popular venues, most of which are on or close to Neil Road in Chinatown.

Neil Road 1 Tantric Bar Probably the most popular gay bar in Singapore, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights with party boys who down a few cocktails before heading across the road to Taboo. A great combination of sights, sounds and reasonably-priced drinks makes the open-air courtyard and indoor bar a great place to start any night out. 78 Neil Road 2 May Wong’s Cafe

May Wong (1905 -1961) was the first Asian American actress to become an international star. May Wong’s Café is located directly above Tantric Bar, is a fitting tribute to this pioneering actress. The oriental, yet old Englishinfluenced decor is adorned with numerous pictures of May Wong taken from many of the films in which she starred. May Wong’s has an extensive menu of inventive and affordable cocktails. Popular with trendy executives but all are welcome. 78 Neil Road http://www.travelgayasia.com

3 ebar Singapore’s classy, mixed karaoke lounge bar that attracts a younger crowd. ebar offers reasonably-priced drinks and plays cool house music after midnight on holidays. Located in a converted shop house directly opposite Tantric Bar. 57 Neil Road

4 Taboo Very popular 5,000 ft² two-story dance club with a lounge bar in the loft area. The main LED lit dance floor is open on Fridays, Saturdays and the eve of public holidays. The upstairs loft area (Attic) is more of a chill out area. Taboo hosts a special themed party “Hot” on the last Saturday of each month featuring an international guest DJ. Check Taboo’s website for details. Taboo tends to attract a younger crowd and gets busier after midnight at weekends as the party moves across the road from Tantric bar. 65 - 67 Neil Road

5 DYMK

DYMK comes from the initial letters of ‘Does Your Mother Know?’ If she found you in this bar, she probably would. DYMK is located in a traditional townhouse and offers a cozy, relaxed environment featuring original artworks and old-fashioned wooden settees. A great place to meet friends for a drink. DYMK can be booked for private parties, and they offer a complimentary birthday cake if you call and tell them it’s your birthday at least two days in advance. 41 Neil Road 7 BackStage Bar Backstage is a great place to meet, socialise and chill out, or dance to some upbeat tunes indoors surrounded by pictures and posters of iconic movies, musicals and stage shows of the past. Gay, but straight-friendly. 74 Neil Road

6 OUT Bar

Located in a Chinatown shop house, with a design inspired by the 1960′s Hollywood era. OUT Bar offers fun-filled entertainment with regular events, performances and guest DJs. Daily happy hour from 5pm – 9pm (Mondays to Saturdays). 43 Neil Road 8 Dorothy’s Bar A new concept in a old setting. Set in the original Backstage Bar location at 13A Tengganu Street, Dorothy’s Bar offers a chic twist on a gay drinking/meeting venue. Enjoy one of the best views in town, overlooking the beautiful Chinatown. Happy hour 6-8pm, with $10 loose drinks. 13A Trengganu Street

Other areas 9 PS Cafe PS Cafe operates 4 branches across Singapore and is as gay-friendly as you can get. PS Cafe was a spin-off brand from Project Shop Blood Brothers – the Singapore tank top and tee shirt fashion retailer that was synonymous with the gay market. The adult-only PS Cafe in Ann Siang Hill is located in what used to be a gay sauna and is particularly popular after work on Thursday nights. 45 Ann Siang Road #02-02

10 Lluvia Named after the Spanish word for rain, Lluvia is probably the most popular bar for bears, their chasers (and friends) in Singapore. It is renowned for being a friendly hangout, a place to relax, catch up with friends or sing a couple of songs. 145 Telok Ayer Street

Ladies District A small, LGBT-friendly bar that caters to gay and queer women and a safe space for hosting LGBT events and social gatherings for the community. Daily happy hour 6pm-9pm. Closed on Sundays.72 Duxton Road Tanjong Beach Club A popular hangout for the young and beautiful, particularly on a Sunday afternoon. The gay-friendly Tanjong Beach Club (TBC) is a trendy restaurant & bar with a nice outdoor pool located on the secluded Tanjong Beach on Sentosa island. The venue hosts regular events and parties that attract a mixed/gay crowd. 120 Tanjong Beach Walk, Sentosa Island http://www.travelgayasia.com

Immigration Most visitors from Western and Asian countries (excluding China) do not require a Visa. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months. See http://www.ica.gov.sg/index.html for more information. Technically, tourists should carry their passport with them at all times in Singapore, but in practise, it’s better to keep it locked in your hotel room safe and carry a photocopy of the details in your wallet.

Duty-free Adults are permitted to bring in 1 litre of spirits and up to 2 litres of wine or beer per person (or a 3-litre of a combination of wine and beer). There is zero duty-free allowance for cigarettes. Bringing in one opened pack is normally acceptable. Chewing gum is illegal. Attempting to import pirated CDs or DVDs can result in fines of up to $1000 per disc.

Money The Singaporean currency is the Singapore dollar, abbreviated SGD, S$ or just $. ATMs are widely available and credit cards are widely accepted. Currency exchange booths can be found in shopping malls and usually offer better rates than banks. Banks are open from 9:30am to 3pm Monday to Saturday. Some banks on Orchard Road are open on Sundays. The Brunei dollar has the same value as the Singapore dollar and is interchangeable so you may get a Brunei note in change. Restaurants sometimes display prices as $29.99++. This means that a service charge (10%) and sales tax (7%) are not included and will be added to your bill. NETT means taxes and service charges are included.

Tipping Tipping is generally not practised in Singapore, although still expected in hotels (perhaps $2 per bag).

Smoking Smoking is banned in all air-conditioned places including pubs and nightclubs. Some outside areas have restricted “smoking zones”.
