BEHIND THE SCENES

one mann’s opinion Welcome back to Mann About Town! In the last two months here, Mann Publications has seen exciting expansions and new methods. From brainstorming new ideas to hosting events and meeting new people, we have been very busy. We had a great event in Southampton for Kavita Channe and an event here in the City at Cucinca 8 1/2 for Caroline Vazzana. Cucina 8 1/2 was a marvelous venue and the décor alongside gift bags filled with Peter Thomas Roth products and other beauty brands was a great hit. In conjunction with Brandsway Creative, we had a great turnout and I thank everyone who came out. They were both tremendous and we are determined to do more events for our cover features regularly in the future. We look forward to the continuing success of each Mann Publications title. The past year was great for Mann About Town. The demand is increasing and we are keeping on pace with staying relevant with the content we provide. We are always on the hunt to find under-the-radar people with great stories. As always, we will stay committed to bringing each story to life through design and creativity. In the last 60 days, we’ve had time to reflect on what we can do in the future. As you wait for our ideas to come to life, you can keep up with us through our Mann Publications weekly newsletters. We keep up to date on all categories such as real estate, fashion and lifestyle in areas from Palm Beach to New York and more. I went to several great events and engaged with multiple people and lots of old friends. Palm Beach and New York are great places to catch up in. With the Mann Charitable Foundation, I am always interested in philanthropic events and will continue to do so going into 2024. After attending the events, we gather the essence of each to share with our readers. We are always discovering new things daily and we certainly look forward to those that will grace our covers in 2024. I hope everyone had a great holiday season and a happy and healthy new year. I look forward to what 2024 brings. Enjoy our January Mann About Town!

French Heritage Gala Dinner Dance

F

rench Heritage Society (FHS) hosted its annual Gala Dinner Dance at a private club in New York City. FHS Chairman Elizabeth Stribling, surrounded by 200 friends and supporters, opened the evening by honoring award-winning architect Gil Schafer III.

Why is Schafer being honored by the French Heritage Society? He’s not French. He doesn’t even have an office in France. The answer is that he celebrates the past to inspire today when creating new houses that have the charm of older ones. Schafer builds houses that celebrate the classical architecture of the past. Just as the French Heritage Society restores the beauty of the past to inspire us today, a key element of Schafer’s architectural designs involves modern amenities made to look vintage and to honor historical facade features. “Travel is so important for expanding our understanding of the world around us,” said Schafer. “For an architect, it’s an essential component of the creative process. Looking and learning about the heritage of the places we visit makes us more able to create meaningful places back home where we live and work.” Schafer continued, “That has certainly been true for me. Although my projects don’t have an overtly French flavor to them, they’re nevertheless the product of studying the scale and details, the landscape and character, of all the places I’ve visited in France and elsewhere over the last 50 years. This is why I’m so thrilled to support this organization. Not only do they pride 20 MANN ABOUT TOWN • JANUARY 2024

themselves on working to preserve the heritage of the exceptional places in France and its culture, but they also bring American students to those places, to learn from them and be inspired by them, just as I have been. I hope tonight you will allow me to make a toast to all of you for supporting this extraordinary mission, and for helping to ensure that the French heritage we all love will endure and inspire for generations to come.” FHS Executive Director Jennifer Herlein shared, “Everyone here tonight makes it possible for the French Heritage Society to award vital restoration grants, sponsor career-defining student internships and organize meaningful cultural programming. We are so grateful for your indispensable support towards our mission of preserving French architecture and culture for future generations.” Herlein added, “In 2023, the French Heritage Society was able to award nearly $500,000 to 16 restoration projects in France, two restoration projects in the United States, and one cultural project; support 19 dynamic student internship opportunities for the next generation of preservationists at esteemed cultural institutions on both sides of the Atlantic; and foster cultural exchange through more than 40 programs and events!”

he 26th Annual Collaborating for a Cure Gala, one of New York City’s much-anticipated autumn charity events, was held at Cipriani 55 Wall Street. The annual fundraiser supports more than 60 scientists worldwide, funded by the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF). Additionally, dollars raised this year will help launch the Foundation’s newest initiative – the SWCRF Mission Possible Grants. These highly competitive projects will focus on improving healthy longevity with less cancer risk as we age. SWCRF plans to add five to six mission possible grantees to its growing, international network in 2024. “The only way to end cancer as we know it, is by working together,” said Dr. Samuel Waxman. “This has been the SWCRF philosophy since its founding nearly 50 years ago. It is why our scientists are required to work with other labs, sometimes across oceans, in order to collaborate and speed up the pace of scientific breakthroughs. And it is why events like this gala are so important.” This year’s event honored artist and humanitarian, Ariela Wertheimer, Guido Campello, co-CEO at Journelle and first CEO of luxury lingerie brand Cosabella & Dr. Sapna Palep, co-CEO at Journelle, founder of Spring Street Dermatology, Mt. The 63rd Annual Quadrille Ball Launches The Social Season with an Exclusive Cocktail Affair Photos courtesy of BFA / Rupert Ramsay

A

formal launch reception for the Quadrille Ball was held at 1014 Fifth Avenue to pay tribute to the upcoming 63rd Annual Quadrille Ball, a white-tie charity event. The Annual Ball is due to take place on February 24th, 2024, at 583 Park Avenue in New York City.

The exquisite gala next February will showcase an elegant night where guests will experience a cocktail reception and a three-course dinner followed by dancing until 4:00 a.m. The premier highlight of the evening is the Quadrille performance itself. The elegant Quadrille remains one of the very few white-tie events in New York City.

Photography by BFA/Nina Fernandez

The annual ball is a fundraiser for scholarships awarded to highly qualified students enrolled at U.S. or German universities. It was founded decades ago to enhance and strengthen transatlantic relationships through education and exchange. Through its non-profit parent organization, the Germanistic Society of America, the Quadrille supports undergraduate, Master and Ph.D. students. The Quadrille Ball is organized by volunteers to ensure that the tax-deductible contributions from sponsors, advertisers, donors and ball guests benefit the stipend fund. The Quadrille dance itself is performed by young professionals from various nationalities and backgrounds who volunteer their time to rehearse during the winter and eventually perform the dance at the Quadrille Ball. The stipends awarded by the 501(c)3 non-profit organization offer students the opportunity to study and conduct research across the Atlantic. Scholarship recipients are chosen in cooperation with highly regarded organizations: the Fulbright program, the Institute of International Education (IIE), and Columbia University. More than 700 students have benefited from the Germanistic Society of America’s support over the years. The Quadrille Stipend Fund could not succeed without the continued and generous support of corporate sponsors, individual patrons and other private donors. Financial and non-monetary donations help the Germanistic Society of America award its scholarships to outstanding students from the United States and Germany. Notable Attendees included: Irmintraud Jost, JB Kresser, Dr. Barbara Elling, Jean Shafiroff, Sofie Mählkvist, Tijana Ibrahimovic, Paola Bacchini, Keiko Aoki, Nadja Sayej, Eva Maria Marks, Nina Smith, Prof. Dr. Claudia Breger, Paulina Simkin, Dr. Katja Wiesbrock Donovan, Dr. Bill Radin, Matthew Yokobosky, Allison Baroness von Arnim, Dagmar Grimm, Steven Brezzo, Bettina Bennett, Heide Herz, Simone Bye, Radwa Saad, Ahmed Elgammal and Margaret Zawadzka.

Spamalot on Broadway By Robert Massimi Is the present cast as good as when it first opened on Broadway in the early 2000s? Debatable. Tim Curry absolutely killed it as King Arthur and under Mike Nichol’s brilliant direction, “Spamalot” was a sensation back then. Under the book and music by Eric Idle and music also by John Du Prez, this musical is still a brilliant piece. Director (and choreographer) Josh Rhodes takes this great piece based on the 1975 movie “Monty Python and The Holy Grail,” now playing at the St. James Theatre and keeps the side-splitting laughter front and center. It is 932 AD, and plague besieges much of England. God has chosen King Arthur (James Monroe Iglehart) to find the Holy Grail. Arthur summons his round table to help him in his journey. From Sir Lancelot (Taran Killam) and Sir Robin (Michael Urie) to Galahad (Nik Walker), the entire trip is rip-roaring laughter! The cast plays many roles and all are quite good. However, Michael Urie and Leslie Rodriguez Kritzer (The Lady of the Lake), steal the show. Urie is one of the best Broadway has to offer today; I have seen him in various roles over the years, and Urie always gives the audience a treat with his acting. Kritzer’s singing and acting were outstanding. As the King trudges through a not-yet-United Kingdom, he is helped along by his neglected sidekick Patsy (Christopher Fitzgerald). Faced with zany characters (some oversized; to the Ni’ and onto a killer rabbit). We meet mud-covered mothers and an amputee swordsman. Adding to this farce, even the French get spoofed and it may be the highlight of the afternoon. What has been added to this “Spamalot” is the frustrated historian and it is well played by Ethan Slater (SpongeBob the Musical), wimpy Prince Herbert, the killer bunny and many other wacky characters. Slater, like Urie, gives us great business, and funny action that brings the show to higher levels. The design in this musical is decent (Paul Tate dePoo lll), as are the projections. I thought the projection here never changes the locations well enough. In the design it merely supports the show rather than being just functional it never raises the show to a bigger brighter visual. Here we get a missed opportunity to separate itself from the “Spamalot” we saw back in 2005. With Jen Caprio’s costume design, Cory Pattak’s lighting and Kai Harada’s sound design we get full support for the musical. Where scenic and projection just exist, the aforementioned really bring great effect and support to these twoplus hours of entertainment. In a spoof such as this, the music needs to be as memorable as the plot itself. Songscourtesy like: “I Am Not Dead Yet,” “All Photo of Robert Massimi in One,” “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway,” “Diva’s Lament” and “I’m All Alone” are all memorable and funny. By way of entertainment, “Spamalot” is great-good-fun and certainly something we can all use in these times, pure escapism and for the most part, the jokes land well. The actors are versatile and talented, and they bring excitement and light fun to their performances. The show never is slow and moves at a rapid pace throughout. Comparing it to when it first came to Broadway hurts this show in that it had a different director and different actors but I promise you that you will not be disappointed seeing this rendition. Cycladic Native: Inherently woody, green and herbaceous with an emphasis on the fig leaf, this scent speaks landscapes—particularly those marked with Greek mountainous terrain.

Fading Embers: Notes of birch, inviting you to contemplate life amongst the branches of a bonfire in the woods—or transporting you to a remote cabin in Zermatt, where one should hope you will be at the very least, content.

Renaissance Nights: This brooding scent has a quiet dignity that feels opulent without being ostentatious, as aromatic notes of rich, honey-like wood and vanilla ring warmth and comfort to even the most austere offerings.

Santal Conspiracy: The signature scent of cities - enigmatic sandalwood acts as the gateway scent to notes of cardamom and vetiver. Everyone loves it—until they don’t. But they always come back.

Unspoken Agreement: An inescapably fresh scent to carry you away. Green stems, a twist of citrus and basil are subtly interlaced throughout. BEAUTY AND SKINCARE

The New Needle-Free Approach To Smoother Skin

38

MANN ABOUT TOWN • JANUARY 2024

BEAUTY AND SKINCARE Ask any woman about her skin care goals, and reducing the look of fine lines and wrinkles almost always makes the cut. Synonymous with a more youthful-looking complexion, skin that appears smoother, plumper and full of bounce is a beauty wish-list no-brainer. While cosmetic injectables have long been the holy grail for achieving younger-looking skin, the latest line-smoothing innovations to generate buzz are non-invasive, needle-free products powered by Peptides—one of the hottest ingredients in today’s skin care circles! To dive deeper into this no-needle trend and the starring role Peptides play, we turned to skin care guru Peter Thomas Roth. An influential segment leader in the beauty industry, Roth is known for creating breakthrough formulas that deliver astonishing results. Roth leads all research and development efforts at his state-of-the-art lab and manufacturing facility. The latest product innovations to emerge from Roth’s lab are Peptide Skinjection™ Amplified Wrinkle-Fix Serum and Peptide Skinjection™ Moisture Infusion Cream. Here, Roth gives us the scoop on his new Peptide-packed products and why these needle-free innovations are the perfect fine-line treatment for younger-looking skin! Why are cosmetic injectable treatments so popular? We’ve been chasing the fountain of youth since the dawn of time. So, when injectables came onto the scene promising to turn back the clock with long-lasting results and relatively low risk, we took note! They may have taken a few decades to go mainstream, but today their appeal has moved beyond just wrinkle treatment and into prevention. Why are we seeing so many needle-free options available now? Needles aren’t for everyone, and even those who do get injectables are looking for needle-free ways to enhance and prolong their results. The advances in cutting-edge ingredients and clinical testing have been incredible. I saw an opportunity to give my customers a needle-free option, and I knew they would love it! What makes Peptides such an effective ingredient in the fight against fine lines and wrinkles? Peptides are short fragments of proteins. Most of the naturally occurring proteins in skin are collagen proteins, which help provide firmness and structure. But over time, these collagen proteins break down, leading to signs of aging. I formulated my new Peptide Skinjection™ Amplified Wrinkle-Fix Serum with a 19% peptide complex of Amplified Matrixyl® and Argireline® because collagen-supporting Peptides offer such a powerful combination of skin plumping and smoothing benefits. And my Moisture Infusion Cream is packed with 21 amplified Peptides and Neuropeptides that help visibly smooth and reduce the appearance of expression lines. What makes Peptide Skinjection™ Amplified Wrinkle Fix Serum unique? My Peptide Skinjection™ Amplified Wrinkle Fix Serum is powered by amplified Peptide solutions that visibly help relax the look of expression lines while also helping to stop the appearance of future wrinkles before they start… brilliant! Plus, it’s clinically proven to improve the look of elasticity, firmness and skin barrier strength. So, if you’re worried about lines, it’s time to relax! Would you recommend Peptide Skinjection™ products to someone who already gets injectable treatments? Absolutely! I designed my Peptide Skinjection™ Amplified Wrinkle Fix Serum to be a dual-purpose product. It not only reduces the look of expression lines and prevents the look of future wrinkles, but if injectables are already your thing, you get a bonus benefit because it complements results of in-office treatments. I boosted the formula with 10% Argirelox™ to help prolong the need for your next injectable treatment by up to six months! Whether you want fewer lines and furrows or less frequent office visits, this product is for you! Plus, nothing beats the youthful bounce and lightweight yet intense hydration you get from my Peptide Skinjection™ Moisture Infusion Cream. Enriched with Cactus Flower, Squalane, Trehalose and Hyaluronic Acid, it leaves skin feeling nourished, supple and infused with moisture. This line-smoothing duo is like nothing you’ve ever tried—trust me!

Rael, Providing Real Solutions for Women’s Health BY ALEX BAUMBUSCH Made by women, for women, Rael uses Korean technology with natural materials to deliver safe, effective 360-cycle care solutions- Rael specializes in feminine care and skincare for cycle health/overall well-being. Launched in 2017, Rael has been committed to bettering your offerings and women’s health ever since. Rael’s commitment to women’s health is reflected through its brand name. Derived from the word “real,” Rael’s core philosophy is authenticity and well-being. They can achieve this through real solutions for women’s health while being true to their transparency, quality and trueness. Yanghee, CEO of Rael, previously was an executive at Walt Disney Studios, with a focus on distribution and sales. With a dream of bringing Korean culture to the U.S., she was educated on the harsh ingredients the U.S. offers in feminine care and started comparing it to Korean-made products. Yanghee wanted to positively impact women’s lives and after researching the $4 billion feminine wellness industry, she brought the “better for you, better for the environment” campaign through Rael. The needs of every individual woman are constantly changing and Rael prides itself in creating something to embrace a woman’s cycle journey. According to the Rael team, “From menstrual care to skincare, Rael embraces the real essence of women’s well-being, fostering a connection that goes beyond superficiality to address the authentic and changing needs of every woman.” With an emphasis on a preventative and holistic philosophy, Korean skincare (K-beauty) introduces unique ingredients such as Mugwort Extract, Tea Tree Extract and Minerice Enzyme Complex. Moving away from the

conventional U.S. ingredients emphasizes achieving a natural glow, allowing one to embrace their natural beauty. “As Korean skincare continues to captivate the U.S. market, its impact extends beyond the surface – it’s a cultural shift towards embracing a mindful, holistic and personalized approach to skincare that celebrates individual beauty,” Rael’s team said. Rael’s mission to break free from social norms around women’s health defi ned their narrative. Rather than treating an integral part of women’s health as a taboo, they are focusing on their overall health. After their initial launch, Rael then expanded to skincare, cramp care and more. Effective cycle care and innovative skincare solutions go hand-in-hand. Rael offers well-rounded support through it all while staying true to their goal. “From the beginning, Rael started with women’s holistic wellness at the center in hopes of improving their well-being and wellness by bringing novel technology and clean ingredients from Korea and fi lling that gap in the beauty and wellness industries,” the Rael team said.

waterproof, protective patch uses a medical-grade hydrocolloid to extract impurities. Rael has their future set on being a leader in the feminine wellness industry. By pioneering new materials, incorporating technology and addressing emerging wellness trends, Rael looks to reach new markets. In doing so, they hope to build a supportive community around their brand through their online platforms, events and partnerships. “To truly lead in the thought leadership space,” explained the team. “Rael will continue to deepen its commitment to philanthropy and set benchmarks for eco-friendly practices.”

Amongst multiple products, Rael’s two standouts include their organic cotton cover pads and their invisible spot cover. Their cotton cover pad became a best seller on Amazon and sits at number one today. The Korean manufacturing captures both comfort and performance. The JANUARY 2024 • MANN ABOUT TOWN

eo Park has been named the new Executive Chef at Hortus NYC. Park initially served as the opening sous chef of Hortus NYC in 2018 and moved on to work in the kitchen at Michelin-starred Jua and has now returned to Hortus NYC. He has collaborated with Managing Partner Suhum Jang (Per Se, Daniel, Jungsik) to create a menu that seamlessly blends the flavors of China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia with subtle European twists. Chef Park added his own touches to Hortus NYC, breathing new life into the menu, highlighting diverse seasonal ingredients. His additions to the menu include appetizers: Hortus Salad, grilled calamari with sugar snap pears, edamame, hummus and shaved parmesan cheese over leafy greens; Hamachi in yuzu kosho sauce with cucumber, pickled peppers and blood orange. Entrees are: Chicken, roasted chicken breast, chicken sausage and grilled seasonal vegetables in house curry with Thai basil; Short Rib, braised short rib with daikon ecrasé, roasted baby carrots and fried mushrooms; and Cod, with a miso crust served over lobster risotto with charred spring onion.

Hortus NYC continues to offer one of the best value tasting menus in New York City, the aptly named Hortus Tasting Menu, which includes the Royal Platter for two, as well as a choice of an appetizer, main course and dessert for each person, with the option to add a wine pairing.

The newer dishes complement Hortus NYC’s mainstays like: the Royal Platter chilled lobster tail, Hamachi crudo, shrimp cocktail and an option to include a dozen oysters; King Crab Noodle, fettucine with mala in a cream sauce topped with shallots, scallions and king crab; and Sea Urchin Donabe, ikura and cured egg yolk over a bed or nori rice served in a clay pot topped with sea urchin.

Hortus NYC’s wine program was curated by Suhum Jang who has specially selected bottles of fine sparkling wines and champagne, red and white wines from France, Italy, New Zealand and U.S., Japanese craft beer such as Stout Echigo and Pale Ale Kanazawa, Korean bottled beer, Junmai ginjo and Junmai sake by the glass, unfiltered rice wine, soju and premium soju are also available. The program menu also features the Hortus Pour, a red wine, white wine or sake that Jang has personally chosen at an approachable price point. Jang has also created a low-ABV soju-based cocktail program that perfectly complements the cuisine. They include: Oolong High with oolong tea, soju, lemon and cane sugar; 5th Ave with Jinro 24, Hwayo 23, tonic, mint and lime; and Piña, Kinro with lime and mint, garnished with a chipotle pineapple chip. Hortus NYC has recently introduced a new brunch menu. Chef Park curated a creative, yet approachably priced menu that blends Asian flavors for a new American style. Highlights from the brunch menu include: Mochi Pancake, with Kimchi jam, buttercream, maple syrup Yuzu, with an option to add Maple Yuzu Bacon; Yuzu Bacon Rose Pasta, that includes yuzu bacon, rigatoni in a rose cream sauce; amongst other options. The name Hortus NYC, Latin for garden, reflects the emphasis on freshness, and the theme of the garden runs through the interior. Divided into four distinct areas, the first floor is dedicated to bar dining with an open kitchen and a chef’s table. The second floor contains an adjoining glass-enclosed hidden garden oasis complete with lights hanging above for a warm and intimate glow in the evening as well as the main dining room, which offers exquisite views of the illuminated stained-glass windows at the Marble Collegiate Church across the street. From just a small tune, she can execute a song from start to finish, whether she’s listening to jazz, roots, blues or R&B. “It depends on which order the song comes to me. “I love being on stage,” says Wells. “There is a beautiful exchange of energy that occurs between the audience and I when I am performing. I always say it is a symbiotic relationship.” Outside of work, Wells still enjoys both makeup and music. “I really enjoy jamming with other musicians because it’s a way to be completely spontaneous with music,” Wells says. “I also enjoy helping friends with makeup tips or sharing information I have to help to bring joy to others.” When Wells has time off from both, she spends time with family or decompresses with a bath, candles and aromatherapy. When asked how she does it all she replies, “In all honesty, I don’t know. I just do as best I can. It can be challenging at times, but it seems to work itself out as long as I set some personal boundaries,” Wells adds. Her family is extremely important to her and she makes as much time for them as possible. For what 2024 has to bring, Wells plans to continue to work on both of her passions in music and makeup. Her new album is coming out

later this year with a plan to tour and she is also finishing up a film that was shut down during the strike. In her varied career experiences, Wells has a wealth of advice to extend to the next generation of musicians and makeup artists. According to Wells, it’s important to remember what she once asked herself. If money were no object, what would your career look like? By listening to the answer to this question, people will free their minds and see past the points of financial limitations. Wells also says that mentorship is key; know what you want to achieve, find someone who has achieved success, ask questions, be specific and follow through. Going into 2024, Wells wants anyone pursuing a goal or dream to know this: “Be like water, if something seems to block your path, go around it, over it or under it but just keep going!”

The Best of Croatia BY ALEXIS DOERFLER, THE DESTINATION DESIGNER

Situated along the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea, Croatia has been beguiling travelers for years. With its sparkling coastline, ancient cities and incredible network of unspoiled islands, this dream destination has emerged as one of Europe’s finest. From the enchanting streets of Dubrovnik to the spirited culture of Split, the awe-inspiring Plitvice Lakes to the dreamy islands of Hvar, Brac and Korcula, Croatia promises to leave an indelible mark on the hearts of those who visit.

For dinner, Proto serves some of the freshest seafood in town. Michelin-star Restaurant 360 is arguably the most romantic, and for traditional Croatian cuisine with a twist, Bistro Tavulin is an excellent choice. For oyster lovers, Bota Sare offers Croatia’s best Ston oysters, harvested fresh in nearby Mali Ston Bay. Time permitting, travel to the tiny towns of Ston and Mali Ston, where you can witness oyster harvesting firsthand and savor their flavor at one of the seafood-centric restaurants.

Our journey begins in Dubrovnik, often called the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” With its striking seaside location, famous orange-tiled roofs and impressive towering stone walls, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a masterpiece of medieval architecture and undoubtedly Croatia’s most iconic and most-visited coastal city. Exploring the narrow cobblestone streets of the Old Town, its al fresco cafes and perfectly preserved buildings is a fantastic way to immerse in Croatian culture.

No stay in Dubrovnik is complete without visiting Lokrum Island, a sliver of solitude with dazzling panoramas of the mainland. Accessible by private boat or a short ferry ride from the Old Town, discover the island’s botanical gardens and old monastery complex, hike the bucolic paths or take a dip in the sea.

Begin your day outside the walls and marvel at the Pile Gate, the city’s grandest entrance. Make your way towards the Stradun, a picturesque promenade lined with shops and restaurants, before ascending to the top of the old walls, where you can walk their perimeter, offering stunning bird’ s-eye views. Rector’s Palace, an example of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture, is worth touring, as is the Franciscan Monastery and Museum, where you can explore the Baroque-style church, tranquil cloister garden and the third oldest pharmacy in Europe. Dubrovnik is also home to the second oldest Synagogue in Europe, and today, it ranks as the oldest active Sephardic Synagogue in the world. Visitors are welcome on weekdays. Take the Dubrovnik Cable Car to the top of Mount Srd for mesmerizing sunset views over the Old Town and the Elaphiti Islands. Evenings are bustling in Dubrovnik; sample local wine at D’Vino Wine Bar or grab a cocktail at the casual Buza Bar nestled in the rocks perched along the sea. 62 MANN ABOUT TOWN • JANUARY 2024

Head north to our next stop, Split, where history seamlessly intertwines with modern life. In the heart of Split stands Diocletian’s Palace, a Roman wonder dating back to 305 AD. Today, the palace houses Split’s Old Town, serving as a living museum of the past. It is an energetic hub of boutiques, restaurants and residences. In the summer, the central palace courtyard transforms into an open-air stage for world-class concerts and events. Visit the Golden Gate, the intricately decorated main entrance to the palace. Explore the palace cellars, climb the bell tower for sweeping views and wander through the daily open-air market. Split’s waterfront promenade, or Riva, is a great place to watch the boats or take a stroll. Stop into Uje Oil Shop and try their tasty olive oil or sample some wine at one of Split’s wine bars. Zinfandel Food and Wine offers a sizable selection. For delicious food, Bokamorra serves up unique and tasty pizza, Articok provides a modern twist on local favorites and Portofino is a terrific choice for upscale dining.

GOLF

The Park Brings “Open Golf ” to West Palm Beach in Reimagined Historical Golf Course Designed by Renowned Architect Gil Hanse The Park will serve as an inspiration for the role a public golf facility can play in fostering community, opportunity and pure enjoyment.

The Park, in West Palm Beach’s newest public golf course, opened with a philosophy of “Open Golf” for all ages and experience levels. A product of an unprecedented public/private partnership, built entirely with charitable donations from private individuals on rolling, sandy city land, The Park had been the site of the city golf course, The West Palm Beach Country Club, since 1947.

The new facility features a world-class 18-hole golf course designed by Gil Hanse, Jim Wagner and Park Co-founder Dirk Ziff. In addition, there is a lighted nine-hole par three course; an 18 -hole putting course; a twoacre kids-only golf area; and a lighted two-sided driving range with a state-ofthe-art practice facility featuring Top Tracer technology and designed pro bono by PGA Tour Coach, Darren May. The facility is also the new home of the South Florida PGA Section. “Golf is such an integral and important part of our community but sadly there is a real shortage of public golf facilities

in the area. It has been so gratifying to work side by side with such an amazing group of like-minded donors, local volunteers and public officials led by Mayor Keith James. To bring this incredible project from idea to reality in just over three short years has truly been a dream come true,” said Seth Waugh, CEO of the PGA of America and co-founder of The Park. The mission of The Park includes dedicated youth programs and community outreach such as affordable golf instruction, classrooms for

mentoring and after-school tutoring and a twoacre kids-only golf area. “Golf is not only the greatest game in the world but also a remarkable vehicle for impacting and improving lives. From the beginning, the goal has been to make The Park into the happiest, most welcoming, most complete and most inclusive place in all of golf,.” said Waugh. “We love the idea of ‘Open Golf.’ We wanted to call it The Park because this is 190 acres owned by the residents and like a park it should be open to all. We have the abiding view that if we can help to make the game look more like the world, then just maybe the world will adopt some of the core values of the game. I speak for everyone involved when I say we cannot wait to throw open the doors to the community and the world and watch the joy and the impact on lives both young and old.” Mayor Keith James said, “When ideas for this site were being considered, I never imagined an outcome like this was possible. This is a tremendous gift to the city of West Palm Beach. People will be astounded when they see the outstanding facility that has been built for the city and its residents, especially the next generation. The process has been smooth and the progress has been amazing. My staff and I are very proud to have helped bring this project to reality for current and future generations.” Hanse, arguably the most admired golf architect working today, said, “When Jim Wagner and I understood that private citizens, including many of our friends, were giving charitable money to build a new course and facility for the public to enjoy, within the city limits of West Palm Beach, we decided right away to donate our normal design fee and jump in with both feet.” He continued, “The site is incredible, almost 200 acres of rolling sand and mature trees with 30 feet of elevation change, extremely unusual for South Florida. It’s obvious why it was chosen for a golf course in 1947 when the entire area was undeveloped. Jim, Dirk and I set out to design and build a new course that is wide, strategic, easy to walk, and above all, fun to play and appropriately challenging for golfers of all abilities. It was a blast to create, and the reaction to pre-opening play by everyone from PGA Tour players to near-beginners gave us belief that we achieved our goal. Jim and I are honored and thrilled to be co-founders of this wonderful facility.” Other volunteer co-founders are Tom Frankel, president of Frankel Development, who oversaw all aspects of construction and operations from day one; and retired Goldman Sachs Partner Dan Stanton, who has led the fundraising effort that has amassed $56 million in contributions, all from private citizens. The Park was led by General Manager Brian Conley, who brings years of experience from Bobby Jones Golf Course in Atlanta, a similar mission-driven public facility.

HEALTH & WELLNESS With the arrival of the car service at my front door, it was an easy drive down I-95 to The Boca Raton Yacht Club. From arrival to departure, the staff of The Boca Raton treated me like a royal guest. The Yacht Club is The Boca Raton’s all-suite, adults-only refuge located along a yachtlined marina. With sunshine overhead, glistening water and premium accommodations, you bask in luxury with private butler service, exclusive dining at Flybridge, house cars and Spa Palmera pool access to name a few. Its architect is the one and only Addison Mizner, who was commissioned by the Moore Brothers in the 1920’s to design a luxurious resort that would appeal to the most affluent. Standing in the historical lobby, I could imagine the excitement and awe as the first guests approached this resort set against exquisite landscaping. At that moment, I was transported in time to the 1920s. I am known for going full speed ahead, however, a recent injury opened the door for a different vantage point. My planned adventure was to jump in the surf pool and work on my golf and tennis games. And, as you may have noted in a previous issue, I was darning a boot thanks to my skateboarding adventures. I was able to appreciate and enjoy this lovely property at a different pace and view. Staying at the beautiful Boca Raton Yacht Club lent itself to daydreaming and rejuvenating. It involved the typical vacation must-dos: lunching, partaking in a spa day, and truly luxuriating moment by moment. Although the owner, Michael Dell, has put close to $1 billion into the property, it still has that old-world Florida feel. It is friendly and mannered with a blend of American and International visitors. The Flamingo Grill, a Major Food Group restaurant, offers a new take on a mid-century grill. It was divine with incredible food. The salmon with sides of Brussels sprouts and cauliflower paired with a French Sauvignon Blanc was on par with anything I have ever had. CEO Daniel Hostettler greeted me and the service was impeccable. The attire was beautiful; a very old Bermudian vibe with pastel pink jackets everywhere you looked. I was even treated to golf cart service to and from the restaurant which was most appreciated since I was on crutches. There is no need ever to leave the property, as it offers a menu of adventures and culinary experiences for every palate. As a Club Member for a day, I had the opportunity to taste what it would be like to be a member of The Boca Raton. From the Moet Experience to a ride in the Moke about the property, I found myself with a continuous smile. The Moet Experience is a must and only available to Yacht Club guests and members. As I sipped a glass of Moët & Chandon premium champagne on the Champagne Terrace and looked out on the marina, I had a true experience of being treated like royalty. Many know my love of cars; in particular, I fancy a speedy, proper ride. I was delighted by the Aston Martin Drive Experience. Elena Corsano, director of Media and Community Relations shared, “The Boca Raton partners with Aston Martin Lagonda, the iconic British, ultra-luxury sports car brand, to offer driving experiences with the world’s most powerful luxury SUV, the DBX707, for guests of The Boca Raton Yacht Club. The multi-award winning DBX707 heralds a new definition of performance and driving pleasure, without compromising on elegant design and luxurious craft.” As the car pulled into the drive, my smile remained and I fondly reflected on my time away, a mere 45 miles from home. The unexpected can be a pleasant surprise and this staycation rose to the occasion. Accustomed to always being on the go, this respite provided a true rejuvenation and calming of my system. My tip to all those who take the fast lane most days is to pause, look around, appreciate the moment and most definitely consider an alternative way to enjoy time away. The New Face of Plastic Surgery Dr. Barry Weintraub, a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in the heart of New York on Fifth Avenue and 61st Street, has recently been named one of America’s Best Plastic Surgeons in 2023 for facelift surgery by Newsweek. Top professionals in the field have recognized Dr. Weintraub by voting for him in this prestigious publication, which recently released its annual list of the Best Plastic Surgeons for 2023. “I am truly honored to be recognized by Newsweek as one of the best plastic surgeons for 2023,” said Dr. Weintraub. “I am dedicated to providing my patients with the highest quality of medical and plastic-surgical care, as well as delivering the most sophisticated, age-appropriate results always with a keen eye toward natural attractiveness.” Dr. Weintraub shares this philosophy with his entire staff, who provide an atmosphere of respect and compassion. Every patient admitted to his surgical facility experiences not just a personalized interaction, but also a personalized plan for their overall aesthetic – whether it be a surgical plan encompassing facelift, neck lift, blepharoplasty (eyelid lift), rhinoplasty and/or

revisionary surgery, or a noninvasive plan involving skincare and injectable, lasers, microneedling or any number of non-invasive approaches. Board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. Barry Weintraub has over 30 years of experience and has earned a reputation for his exceptionally natural-looking results. “You should never be able to tell that someone had surgery. Less is always more!” said Dr. Weintraub. “I have made it my mission to give patients the most understated and natural results while avoiding the telltale signs of surgery.” For his facelifts, he hides all incisions inside the tragus in the ear so that the hairline incision is not visible. For his rhinoplasty patients, he either employs the “closed” technique – or for the “open” approach, he sews with suture material finer than a human hair (as he does with his upper-eyelid surgeries). Painstakingly, he sews all incisions under loupe magnification for the thinnest incisions possible. “There are many different modalities to correct skin laxity, jowl formation, deep nasolabial folds,

turkey-gobble necks, eye bags, plunging nasal tips and bumps on noses. It’s always my pleasure to help educate patients about what meets their needs and fits their lifestyles.”

were almost religiously revered.

A regular recipient of the titles “Best Plastic Surgeons in America” and “Best Doctors in New York” by Castle Connolly, Dr. Weintraub holds in high regard the ideals he was taught at Cornell, both in medical school as well as his plastic-surgical fellowship, during a time when patient care and compassion

Dr. Weintraub believes that physicians should be welcoming, respectful and must never lose sight that it’s a sacred privilege to operate on another human being— that each patient is a person possessing real-life issues and concerns. “Surgery is not a horse race,” he states, “and taking time is essential to patient safety, as well as ensuring an outstanding, understated and natural-looking result.”

Rihanna’s Creeper is Back: Bigger, Bolder and Phatter Than Ever – The Creeper Phatty Has Arrived Photos courtesy of PUMA

Rihanna’s iconic creeper is finally back. But this time, it’s bigger, bolder and phatter than ever. Imagined, designed and named by Rihanna, the Creeper Phatty takes the classic Creeper to the extreme with an oversized design, a stacked gum sole and bold pops of color. This new twist on the FENTY x PUMA Creeper is available in three colors for all ages and genders, a full family affair. Phatty stands for extra confidence, extra style, extra everything. Rihanna’s vision was to bring the Creeper back but in a bold and culturally relevant way. The original Creeper launched back in September of 2015, a platformed version of PUMA’s iconic Suede sneaker. This silhouette was named “Shoe of the Year” by Footwear News in 2016 and not only transformed sneaker culture but sparked PUMA’s brand impact and relevance over the past decade. The Crepper Phatty is wrapped in suede, with a padded and debossed formstrip, debossed Fenty logo on the tongue, laces with gold aglets and a stacked gum sole. This drop offers three distinct colorways – iconic black and white, extra-bright blue and green, and lavender and cherry red. “We took our OG Creeper and made it bigger and badder,” said Rihanna. “When designing the Creeper Phatty we wanted to reinvent the OG Creeper that was loved by so many. It’s a classic silhouette that has been missed, so its return had to be bigger.” As Creative Director, Rihanna’s second FENTY x PUMA campaign -- shot by Philippa Price who previously has shot for both Rihanna and PUMA – explores the juxtaposition between a creep and a phatty attitude highlighting the oversized and bright elements of the shoe. “The original Creeper changed the game for us,” said Maria Valdes, chief product officer at PUMA. “We knew it was time to bring it back. This shoe has universal appeal and we’ve seen tremendous consumer excitement for the silhouette to return. We are excited to not only be able to build upon the existing silhouette with the Creeper Phatty but also expand our offering to the entire family.”

They said it couldn’t be done. We didn’t listen.

We’ve done hard things before, we do them all the time. For most cancer patients, the usual options are surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation. So we’re working on ways to get the immune system to deploy billions of cancer-killing cells and help more patients survive. When some people experienced mysterious COVID symptoms and had nowhere to go, our team created the first Center for Post-COVID Care. It wasn’t that long ago we had to open up your whole chest for heart surgery. Now we’re pioneering a bypass that goes through a few tiny incisions. With this surgery, we can get you back on your feet in weeks instead of months. So if anyone ever tells you there’s no other way—don’t listen.

On any given day, you would see the hospitality team helping out in the winery, and the winemaking team stopping in to say hello to the guests visiting. [We have] a cohesive team that looks for the details, and understands that while each person has a specific expertise, everyone is looking out for each other. When opening, what steps did CS take to become more sustainable than its competitors? We started with a conventionally farmed vineyard back in 1997. Pam Starr and Charlie Crocker immediately started taking steps to farm the vineyard organically. Over the years it has been of utmost importance to continue to become greener and to farm sustainably. We are always looking for ways to take care of the land. In the winery we implemented technology that would reduce our carbon footprint and preserve our natural resources. Just this year we took it a step further and installed solar on the winery, intending to become more carbon neutral. How has CS changed over the years? In the beginning, it was just Pam and Charlie, with 100 cases of Cabernet Franc. Now we are a small (but mighty!) team of nine that produces 4,500 cases annually. Back in 1997, our wine was only sold to great restaurants around the San Francisco Bay Area and the greater Los Angeles market. As the years went by and our production grew, we started hosting guests at the estate in St. Helena.

The response was so amazing – people traveled all over the country just to come to taste our wines! The Casali Membership was created due to that incredible demand and is now the only way to get access to many of our wines. How does CS harvest its grapes? Everything is harvested by hand. Most of the grapes are picked into small boxes – holding roughly 30 pounds of grapes. This ensures the grape clusters come into the winery in pristine condition – no broken skins or crushed clusters. They are then carefully sorted onto an elevator to remove any small leaves and sticks that may have accidentally made it into the bin when picked. From there, clusters go through a de-stemmer, which separates the grapes from the stems, sending the single grapes onto a sorting table. On that table yet another pass is made by hand to remove stem jacks and imperfect grapes before they are put into the vessel it is destined to be fermented in. Then the sugar in the grapes and yeast work together to make wine! How long is this process? Do you have people who specialize in this? This process varies by the grape variety and volume that is harvested. Typically harvest starts in August, and all the grapes are in before the end of October. The winemaking process is much longer than that, though. Red wine is made and then aged in barrels for 18-20 months before bottling. Once bottled, they will rest for one year before releasing the membership. There are people who specialize in this; the winemaking team here at Crocker & Starr consists of Julie Robertson as winemaker, Pam Starr as consulting winemaker and Addie Dearden as production Enologist. What is CS’ most popular wine? The first wine produced, Estate Cabernet Franc, is still our most sought-after. It is our Winter Membership wine, and it sells out upon release. I wish we could

produce more – but the vineyard only gives us so much! We make incredible Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, too. And for something much more unique, Malbec has become increasingly more popular amongst our fans. How does CS differ from neighboring vineyards? Our goal is to ensure the land will continue to produce great grapes for generations to come. We use electric tractors to reduce our carbon footprint. In the spring, sheep eat our cover crop. Bird boxes that house owls naturally control our animal ecosystem. All of these things are leading us down a path of regenerative farming, which is the next evolution beyond organic farming. How do you apply your philosophy to wine-making? We look to harness the essence of our unique property – and that starts with planting the right grape varieties in the right soils, in the right parts of the vineyard. Then, it’s all about letting those incredible vines produce grapes of the highest quality. Winemaking is a combination of art and science – for us it is about the transformation from vineyard to bottle, wines true to their place of origin. Opening a bottle of Crocker & Starr should transport you back to the Crocker Estate with every sniff and every sip. Can you talk a bit about Carnivus Maximus? It’s the GRANDEST Party in Napa! Our annual celebration on the Sunday before Labor Day is filled with live music, outrageously fun games, an amazing bounty of food and of course delicious wine! We pour current releases along with large-format library wines to celebrate the new harvest. This event books up fast so if you’re planning on coming book your hotels and tickets well ahead of time.

Florida’s natural resources with the state’s leading conservation groups. The format of each session will be a presentation followed by a discussion and Q&A. The schedule is as follows: • January 4, 2024: Love Letters to Palm Beach County – A Visual Overview of Palm Beach through the Lens of a Photographer, Scientist and Conservationist (Presenter: Benji Studt, conservation photographer, scientist, nature communicator and Palm Beach County’s Environmental Resources Management’s Outreach team leader).

In the 1970s, scientist and philosopher Rene Dubos guided us to “think globally, act locally” in addressing environmental problems. The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens is leading by example with its new “Conservation Conversations” speaker series. The series will continue on the first Thursday evening of the month from January to April 2024. “’Conservation Conversations’ is a series directly tied to our mission here at the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens,” said Margaret Horgan, executive director for the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. “It was Ann Norton’s specific intention for her property to be enjoyed by the community as a natural sanctuary where nature, art and history are intertwined. The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens has beautiful spaces that naturally lend themselves to expanding our horticultural programming, including the newly restored historic Orchid House Plaza and the creation of the artistically designed Pollinator Garden. We are thrilled to finally bring this vision to life and have CJ McCartney leading our efforts.” “Conservation Conversations” is an exploration of current topics on conservation, sustainability and restoration of

• February 1, 2024: Restoration and Conservation of Habitats and Native Plants – The Importance of Conservation for Endangered and Imperiled Native Plants and Wildlife. (Presenter: George D. Gann, executive director, chief conservation strategist, Institute of Regional Conservation). • March 7, 2024: Restoration and Transformation of Our Landscapes and Public Areas - How Community Engagement Creates Sustainability and Impact (Presenter: CJ McCartney, Fl. Wildflower Foundation board of directors and ANSG’s Master Gardener in Residence). • April 4, 2024: Saving Wild Florida: Conservation on a Coastal Barrier Island – Strategies to Protect and Conserve (Presenters: Sarah Martin Kittredge, South Florida Land Conservation Manager, The Nature Conservancy and Cristin Krasco, Blowing Rocks Preserve Manager, The Nature Conservancy in Florida). “The series starts with a statewide perspective, then brings the focus to Palm Beach County and the surrounding region,” said CJ McCartney, ANSG Master-Gardener-in-Residence. “With so many environmental headlines, especially in Florida, there’s never been a better time to convene these types of conversations and educate ourselves on how these global issues impact us right here in our own backyard. We are grateful to the Florida Wildflower Foundation for their generous donation of native plants and wildflower seeds for all attendees.”

After moving to South Florida from Chicago, McCartney started learning how to be a knowledgeable and effective environmental steward. Along with training to become a Master Gardener, she started taking a variety of botanical and horticulture classes as well as seminars to supplement her formal education from Harvard University’s JFK School of Government graduate program in Public Affairs and Policy. Currently, she vouchers native plants for the Department of Environmental Resources Management, serves as vice-chair on the board of the Florida Wildflower Foundation and works as the Master Gardener-in-Residence at Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens. In addition to her role with “Conservation Conversations,” she also leads the Master Gardener in Residence walking guided tour of the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens’ rare palm, cycad and pollinator gardens. She currently resides in Palm Beach Gardens. The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens is a non-profit foundation established in 1977 by resident sculptor Ann Weaver Norton (1905-1982). A two-acre urban sanctuary and internationally recognized arboretum, the compound comprises the historic Norton House and Artist Studio, exhibition galleries, monumental sculptures, Pollinator Garden, historic Orchid House Plaza and tropical gardens of more than 250 species of rare palms and cycads. The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens’ mission is to enrich lives with nature, art and history. The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens will have special admission pricing for the “Conservation Conversations” speaker series. General admission is $30 per person. ANSG members and seniors are $25 each and children 18 and under are $12 each. Reservations in advance are required. To register, please visit ansg.org or call 561-832-5328.
