Intentions

This booklet contains some of my work produced during my academic studies and first professional placements between 2010 and 2013. Among them you will find an honored competition entry, my thesis, other academic projects and various workshops’ designs. Having dealt with various scales of design during my studies I became highly interested in urban design. In particular, my interest includes architectural design methods at the city level, both for housing and public buildings, illustration subjects and photography. Having acquired both analytical and critical thinking I am keen on expanding my knowledge and gaining further professional experience through practical implementation. I am looking forward to working as a team member in the context of competitions and other projects I can be helpful with. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Museum for Underwater Antiquities

International Architectural Competition:

“Redesign of the existing cereals’ stock house building facilities (SILO) and its surrounding open space into a Museum for Underwater Antiquities and Regeneration of part of the Piraeus Port Authority (OLP) Coastal Zone.”

Honourable Mention Team: Thomopoulos D. Kanellou N. Kremmida L. Matala M. Pitsios I. Kanellos A. Venierakis M. Zachos T. Year: 2012

The proposal’s goal is to create an experiential space that stimulates the visitors’ senses through their exploration in the museum’s interior. The design of the museum was based on the interpretation of the museological preliminary study and its adaptation by locating the permanent exhibition space within the silo complex. The six sections of the exhibition concern two separate topics: the first five refer to underwater antiquities, while the sixth one is related to the silo building and its original use. This distinction is increased by developing the sixth topic throughout the rest exhibition, rather than remaining strictly separated. The design concept is that the visitors’ circulation in the museum follows proportional the function’s route of the original use of the building.

The main exhibition spaces are located mostly in the typical part of the silo building, within the area of the cells. The way the cells were handled refers to the character of the exposed antiquities, the time capsule and the closed sets of marine excavations. The closed shells are sculpted in such way that create succession subgroups reminding underwater caves where individual exhibition sections are organized.

Concept design of the regeneration of the coastal zone of OLP, is the creation of a new “Pier Culture and its connection with the city through the activation of the nearby open spaces and archaeological sites. The region where the new cultural activities are sited forms an area of supra local character, a promenade for residents and visitors, and beyond to it a more localized, creative space for relaxation and recreation, a park for Piraeus.

Cultural Center in Athens

ACADEMIC

Design Thesis Project

The thesis project is about a cultural center on Klafthmonos Square, located in the city center of Athens, Greece between major public spaces.

Team: Venierakis M. Zachos T.

In the process of analysis, the character of the wider historical area of the city was studied as well as the overall fabric of the city, historic, urban and architectural. Our goal was to come up with a building that could be part of a city walk, a type of indoor public space, where cultural uses could serve the purpose of socialization.

Professors: Kokkoris P. Xanthi Th. Keventsidis K.

In urban scale, the main concept was the diagonal junction of the two nearby squares through the site. Aiming to vitalize the whole area the new passage activates the site and accomplishes the start of the ascent into the building.

Year: 2013

In the specific block the adjacent buildings also incorporate cultural uses, such as a museum, lecture and concert halls as well as a movie theater. So we propose the cooperation between the existing organizations and the new cultural center in a united cultural pole.

Updating the City Block in Athens

Architectural & Urban Design

The project regards a block reform in Keratsini, a deprived urban area of Athens, near a central square and a small park.

Team: Mavroudi N. Venierakis M. Viaropoulou Z. Zachos T.

Our intention was to unite the public spaces of the area through the site, forming a single route. By creating two major plateaus, which define passages around and through them, access from all levels of the block is permitted to the site.

Professors: Kokkoris P. Patrikios G. Year: 2010

The three levels of the ground floor incorporate all public functions so that the housing is developed in the upper levels. The public part includes both commercial uses such as shops and offices, and cultural functions such as a multipurpose hall, a library, a museum, youth clubs and community workshops. For the upper housing levels we were very concerned about the right insolation and ventilation of all houses, and therefore a slender building is designed. The main objective was to combine the various types and sizes of houses in an airy building, where residents can use the open spaces between houses for gatherings. Access to housing is made via open corridors and a secondary system of vertical movement.

Architectural Design: Place & Construction

Integration and design of student emergency housing and infrastructure in the city of Xanthi, Greece.

Team: Mavroudi N. Venierakis M. Viaropoulou Z. Zachos T.

In light of the housing problem faced every year by students, especially freshmen, we have created units, with different types of amenities, which can fit in the campus or in other public places of the city capable of accommodating these parasitic structures.

Professor: Mantzou P. Year: 2010

The units can function as emergency housing cells providing the students with space for sleep, personal hygiene, work, food and storage. They can be synthesized into more complex structures in all possible combinations. Their connection with the necessary networks for their operation can be achieved either through infrastructure constructions, with receptors for plug-in installation of cells, or through parasitic developments on public buildings. Profoundly, both in the monocyte state as well as in the combined version cells can be dismantled and transported. Moreover, each cell may be stored in a ÂŤclosedÂť and protected form. The dimensions of the cells in both closed and open form should take into account the storage system, the modularity with other cells and anthropometric data.

COMPETITION

Tourist Accomodation Prototype

European Student Competiton

The objective of the contest is to contribute a new model for tourist accommodation on the greeek island Santorini, in accordance to contemporary bioclimatic criteria and sustainability.

Team: Mintsouli A. Venierakis M. Zachos T.

The site for our hotel is in the old quarry between Fira and Akrotiri. Its orientation towards the west opens a view to the caldera, Phira and Ia. The existing gorge defines the main entrance and passage towards the complex and indicates its three principal programmatic components. The main entrance-reception, the restaurant and the upper level rooms are in a way “excavated”. The secondary functions (the athletic facilities, the winery house and the Conference Hall) are placed towards the south side of the gorge.

Year: 2011

If the gorge was found and assisted as in starting this passage, the path itself became a connector for the proposed areas. It circumnavigates through the plateau of the piazza and opens to the pool and spa; passes by the café-bar and overlooks the suspended rooms of the lower level of the hotel which stand for the view of the sunken volcano and form an argument with the edge of the rock; Further down an observation tower crowns the boat pier. The proposal attempts to redefine the super scale of the extensive program, with the microsystem of the Theraic vernacular, not by mere mimitisim but by interpreting and transcribing the spatial indigenous characteristics to that of an organic development of cell-like dwellings.

Old industrial zone and western extensions of the urban fabric in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece

Team: Athanasiou I. Fragkia V. Marinakou E. Mintsouli A. Rossikopoulou S. Sophiadi A. Venierakis M.

The remarkable contradiction of the region includes features of productive rural land, remnants of industrial spaces, warehouses and occasional green land. All of them coexist with the characteristics of modern housing, new hotels, and the central bus station of Thessaloniki along with an autogenous Roma settlement.

Tutors: Triantafullidis G.

The proposal highlights a dominant strategy targeting to the integration of city infrastructure with the pre-existing landscape farmland and suburban green space. Simultaneously it attempts to establish structures for urban installation, a reinterpretation of the traditional urban block typology, and all the parts that make up the urban landscape, blocks, squares, roads etc.

A series of experimental brick walls divide the wasteland into a literary playground. Sculptural in form, these structures wrap into seating and shelving to allow the local reader to enjoy a good book. Books nestle between bricks and mortar, filling the open library as they wait for their new borrower. Inspired by Alvar Aalto’s curvaceous brick walls, the design result was a brick chez lounge using various types of patterns and brick bonds. The design of each “room” happened in small groups and the construction process included framework for concrete foundations and building up small walls with mortar and a combination from recycled and new bricks.
