EAL collection of resources & library?

Sergei Shubin and his team at Swansea University January 2020 developed this illustrated children's book arising out of research into experiences of hardship in Bangladesh. When cyclones hit and there is flooding everywhere, we can empathise with feelings of devastation that arise from storms in the UK. Core themes of resilience, friendship arises from sharing, and greed, will be open for discussion supported by teachers’ notes. Three short biographies that will lead to an understanding of geography, poverty, loss and rebuilds.

What new titles with teachers’ supporting “ material can I show to demonstrate a lively

The titles on this page put Climate Change into an EAL context! A Canvas… is about cyclones, storms and flooding: something we see on TV, but now set in a distant land. Conversely, Moon is about drought, scarcity, hunger, war, illusion and co-operation. As part of our multi-modal policy, a title will be available as a normal picture book with sound spots; an ebook with audio also in home languages; and as wordless Story Props for our Desktop Stages. We recommend a progression from ebooks to books to story props to build from L1 through translanguaging to English.

New Titles

A Canvas of Children’s Lives: Stories from Assasuni, a Village in Bangladesh Edited by Sergei Shubin, Illustrated by Stefan Gibson

The Biscuit Moon Illustrated by Jesús Gabán Award-winning pictures give an understanding in a gentle way about delusion that arises from scarcity, March 2020 war arising from greed, and wisdom that leads to cooperation. This book will resonate with many new migrants and will give a framework to whole class discussions. The story prop version will stimulate many pupils to express their own experiences. Quiet! By Kate Alizadeh

Errol’s Garden By Gillian Hibbs Winner of ‘Growing Good Kids’ USA.

Ssh! Listen. What’s that noise? What can we hear when we’re really, really quiet? A child enjoys the range of sounds they hear as their busy day comes to an end, from the bustle and chat of dinner time, to the quiet hush of their father’s voice at bedtime. Want to introduce ‘Quiet Time’ to the class? Ask children to note down all the background sounds at home and build up a list to compare with those in the book. With PENpal, recordable stickers add a collection of more sounds into each book. Auditory landmarks help all children to become familiar with daily routines, and can be particularly important to those who are blind or partially sighted. January 2020

Available now

Errol loves gardening, but he doesn’t have a real garden. Although his home is full of beautiful plants, he longs for an outdoor space where he can grow things.

A great support to introducing the joy of plants. Errol is such a role model for initiative, planning and getting the whole community excited and involved with his dream. Run the story concurrently with growing plants in the classroom or the school garden plot. Understanding anxieties of New Arrivals Overview: this lesson is on the acclaimed animation by Rochdale EMAS, and clearly expresses feelings of isolation and fears of starting school and being accepted by others. Take away the words in a well-known story, such as Gruffalo or Goldilocks or Hungry Caterpillar… and see what happens! Suddenly instead of watching silently the children start to tell the story in their own way. Wordless books do just that. For many years, children have been speaking and having fun, engaging with the pictures and stimulating their verbal expression. Becoming their own authors!

Wooden traditional Kamishibai stage (A3 props)

We go one step further. The desktop stage with story props is designed for large groups. Kamishibai is an old Japanese storytelling method. Nearly every nursery and infant school in Germany, Austria and Switzerland use Kamishibai for a totally different storytelling and listening experience. Now we are bringing this to the UK! Many children are quiet in class. Maybe just shy, or INAs, or lacking confidence in speaking, or for various other reasons. Here is a well-tried and tested method - a new experience that encourages oracy, role play, socialising, makebelieve, speaking in English or in their home languages - the benefits are huge. We have a great collection of ‘Story Props’ with a robust wooden light Desktop Stage. Ideally, let the children familiarise themselves with the story in book-form and then create their own stories. Enjoy the magical experience of Kamishibai storytelling.

There are however many ways, multi-modal ways, to reach children, recognising their unique learning styles, travel histories and motivations of each individual. Our New Arrivals philosophy is to tell stories in different ways: Dual language picture books in English and mother tongue; Ebooks with games and notes; Wordless versions with artwork but no words so pupils can tell their story in their home language or English with the Kamishibai method.

To support L1 pupils where teachers or TAs may not be speaking their language, our dual language books have AUDIO on each page. Pupils using PENpal or ClassroomPEN can listen to the text first in the home language, then access the English. See our Starter Language Packs in various languages that provide immediate support. There is nothing more comforting to a new arrival than to hear a story being read in their home language. Teachers can also make their own audio-visual resources using Recordable Labels and PENpal or ClassroomPEN. They can involve parents to also provide audio in home languages.

Parental and community inclusion are significantly enhanced by seeing dual language resources in schools. The PENpal/ClassroomPEN enables parents to add their voices into any dual language book; or for favourite non-Mantra Lingua books, parents too can add their voices using our recordable labels. Children can make their own mini-books including narrations in their home language. To engage the family or community, schools can loan out our ebook library of over 550 dual language books at very low prices. There are books suitable for all siblings, from 3 to 14! Parents can also use the library to sharpen up their English.

Pupil Admissions & their views

can I obtain good information “ How about a new pupil new to English?

A huge challenge is to collate good information about pupils new to school, the UK, and new to English. Although translators can help, if a class has many different languages this can be difficult to co-ordinate, and expensive, with variable translation quality. A number of bilingual web-apps can help you obtain deep information and aggregate analysis: • all questions are spoken in the home language, and all answers are automatically transcribed to English. Bilingual Pupil’s Admission app in English with 26 languages. A dual language questionnaire, where the questions are as text with audio in the home language. As the parent listens in their home language and answers a question, their answers are mirrored in English. After completing the questionnaire, a dual language report can be printed out or emailed.

How can I develop a range of strategies to promote “parental involvement of parents with EAL at differing levels?

An aspect of leadership is to engage all stakeholders, and the DfE recognise that communication with a schools parental and caring community is a critical part of the learning environment. We have a number of tools and resources that will help to encourage and excite parents to become involved with the school, class and teachers. Ebooks

products are there to support “What my EAL pupils with reading? Our approach to learning English is through the medium of stories so words and meaning are within a story context. Editors ask translators to give priority to maintaining tension, rather than word for word translations. Our publishing philosophy follows Prof Stephen Krashen’s ideas in language learning.

2. Every story has a video, using the same illustrations for visual signposting but now the telling is in English only. Enjoy listening to a new language - its intonations, speed of telling, oracy.

Language learning is about developing confidence in communication. We recommend our dual language ebook library - more accessible, more robust than book/pen and with more interactivity. EAL Co-ordinators can begin by taking the notes of EAL advisors who share e-notes on each story: what are the difficult words, sections, what to look out for, how to encourage building synonym banks, etc. A 5 step process is recommended: 1. Listen and/read the story in the home language to get a good understanding of the story - the characters, setting and plot.

3. Then start on page 1 again, this time tapping the English. Spoken text is highlighted to road map audio with text. Listen over and over. With PENpal and labels, practice pronunciation to build confidence in speaking. Concurrently use the Phonics Pack to learn to read words and sentences.

Another interactive features is a Glossary where difficult words are supported by definition & synonyms.

In the screen shot above, touch the Arabic and listen. Enlarge the font, English font is dyslectic friendly. 16 | uk.mantralingua.com | 0044 208 44 55 123

4. Role of the EAL Advisor/Co-ordinator Each title has Teachers Notes which lists advice on what to look out for page by page - tricky words, sight words, what to check for, etc. Your EAL co-ordinator could add to these specific to the child. Learn to Write English

What skills do my L1 pupils need to “write narrative stories? Pupils who find difficulty to write in their home language, may prefer to tell their stories via PENpal.. They can use translanguaging, set up bilingual dialogue, change the narrative as they build confidence in English. Story Mountain explains aurally different ways to tell stories - different ways to start, build tension, and so on. Teaching consultants in Hampshire developed the Interactive Literacy Toolkit KS2. Whether the narrative your pupils are working on is fictional or non-fiction, you get a four hour audio guidance plan to help pupils improve their writing and storytelling. Pupils can work independently as they tap into the Toolkit’s activities, audio hints, tips and reminders.

The interactive Story Mountain Chart with English audio : £7.00. Purchase Polish or Romanian, Nepali or Spanish audio renditions for £5.00 each. (Story Mountain is also part of our Literacy Toolkit) 18 | uk.mantralingua.com | 0044 208 44 55 123

Many L1 pupils and Dyslectic readers may find understanding written instructions difficult. Misunderstanding what to do is often a major cause in under performance. These cards compress content into manageable cards that have audio commentary. Pupils can return to each section again and again at the own pace without the embarrassment of announcing that they don’t understand!

The Literacy Toolkit contains • Story Mountain Talking Chart • 6 Non Fiction Talking Charts planning frames to support the writing of instructions, persuasive text, discussion, explanation, recounts and reports. Audio available also in Polish and Nepali (£10.00 per extra audio) • 36 Task Cards for fiction analysis and interpretation. • Book Review Guide and audio planning frame Literacy Toolkit with sound files in English (without PENpal) Price: £25.00

Science is exciting, more so if the students can understand concepts and what precisely they are required to do. EAL students may be reluctant to ask for help, especially if they do not follow the accents and the pace of speaking. There’s so much free graphic content on the web - with our recordable labels voice explanations can easily be added, plus extra language explanations on separate sheets. NEW!

This is challenging. You want to develop a spirit of openness, enquiry and with a relevance to the everyday lives of pupils. We find the Kamishibai wordless story-telling stage is an excellent tool for talking, re-telling and developing social etiquette. Add stories from our series of world-wide perspective picture books and find something for 4 to 12 year olds - to challenge, encourage and engage.

English for SEN?

The challenges in language learning and learning difficulties are different. Add to that each individual has different learning styles that are developed personally and socially - learning by doing, thinking, rote learning, learning through discovery - these too have a cultural relevance. So, what can a TA do when a new pupil, often in transition, joins their class with very little English? Complexity in assessing EAL, EAL with SEN, is huge and assessment methods are always developing. A pupil advanced in Home languages but weak in English, can have misleading results in standard tests. Then, assessing those with EAL with very little English and SEN requires even more sensitivity and extensive use of home languages.

Special Education Needs

can I tell if an EAL pupil has special education needs? “ How Can I find out in a sensitive way and avoid mistaking lack of

We do not have answers. But we think that some of the instruments mentioned below may help in “Observation Methodology”. On average, pupils participating in Oral Language intervention make about 5 months additional progress …

Psychologists and consultants have proven that music, birdsongs are very therapeutic, especially for autistic children. Music can also be useful for language learning*. The main issue is in managing the playlist of songs and generating sufficient volume for groups of pupils to respond to. The CRPEN+Bluetooth speakers + Createlink Software help to allocate songs to individual stickers or sound spots in the Audio Journal. Each spot doubles up to include users’ voices!

The dual language ebook library has over 550 titles in English with 37 home languages. All books use dyslexic friendly fonts and have audio in two languages. We recommend that the SEN/EAL coordinators look at the EAL Teachers Notes on our website. They can copy them into any page of the ebooks using the note-making tool. The Teachers Notes advise on recommended progression from story to story, trip points on each page and suggestions for questions, and importantly, how to keep control of progress on each child new to English.

Manage all recordings with the FREE label manager software.

School licence from £50 for 5 users for 550 books.

For visually impaired pupils the PENfriend is a tried and tested device that works on all our recordable labels. Use them to extend spoken vocabulary, articulation of ideas and spoken interventions, collaborative learning to promote and retain pupils’ talk and interaction within groups and presentation to stakeholders.
