A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The City of Miami Beach through the leadership of the commissioners and Mayor have bestowed upon us an awesome responsibility; to transform the Colony Theatre from an underused venue to a world-class theater institution. I am honor to present our first show as the resident theater company of The Colony Theatre, and I am ecstatic about the incredible display of talent we will be sharing with you today. Working with such a legendary theater director like Gregory Mosher and a world-class cast has been nothing short of humbling for us. At Miami New Drama we believe Theater is a vital element of society. When theater speaks to its audience, it has the power to transform lives, build bridges, tear down walls and create community. We believe theater should always be an active member of our national and local conversation. In that spirit, we present Ferdinand von Schirach’s TERROR, a play that forces upon us an impossible question where we, as a community, must come together to decide the fate of one person, and in doing so, deciding how far we are willing to go as a society in the fight against terrorism. Audience participation is at the center of this play, but it’s also at the center of the success of any theater company. I invite you all to get involved with Miami New Drama and the Colony Theatre, come to our shows, talk to us, volunteer, become a supporter. Our success is in your hands.
–MICHEL HAUSMANN
A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT The truth of the courtroom is relative, as is the truth in writing. By upholding a principle the court is not denying the individuality its truth. To the contrary, it is protecting it. Utilitarian thought would permit the sacrifice of 164 individuals to save the life 50,000. The Kantian principle does not allow for this sacrifice. Every life is valuable. It is not possible to lose one’s dignity because another case is more valuable. This is the positive side of absolute value. An airplane has been hijacked by terrorists; they want to use it for killing 50,000 people in a baseball stadium; you are a soldier who must decide whether to shoot at the airplane and sacrifice the lives of the 164 passengers on board in order to save the lives of the 70,000 stadium guests; if you believe in utilitarianism you would sacrifice the passengers, but with Kant you can’t. One life is not worth more or less than 1000 others. The dignity of the individual is an absolute value, not a relative value. I am very pleased that the Miami New Drama officially begins its 2017 season with the American premiere of “Terror” and that the play will be directed by two-time Tony Award-winning Director Gregory Mosher. The famous 19th century French novelist Gustave Flaubert once attended a class reunion. One of his former classmates was ill and unable to attend the reunion. The class got him a Get-Well Card and asked the famous novelist to compose a beautiful message for their ill friend. Flaubert disappeared into a back room to collect his thoughts and write the inspirational message. Two hours later he emerged from his seclusion and presented the card to his classmates. There were only two words inscribed on it: Get Well! In the spirit of Flaubert, I’d like to write only two more words: THANK YOU!
