Mumbai lead to the realization of problems faced by the ‘low-income medical migrants availing outpatient services’ or the ‘outpatients.’ On researching and analysing cancer care in Mumbai numerous shortfalls of the healthcare sector for these outpatients were

revealed.The infrastructure and environments treating and housing them were found to be inadequate and unhealthy. On a more advanced level, the needs and issues of the patients and their caregivers were not understood beyond the basic necessities of food, clothing, and shelter. The healthcare environments were found to be unsupportive for healing.
INVESTIGATION
This lead to the question of ‘what could be the solution?’ Was it establishment of a medical institution in the city? Or in the rural areas? Was it need for a palliative and hospice care center? Was it need for more lodgings? Was it the shortage of charitable funds? Was it incorporating a healthy environment in all of these? If so, how to incorporate this ‘healthy environment?’ And which of these needed to be prioritized?
POSSIBILITIES
Architecturally, the input is limited to control via design of the built and, to some extent, the unbuilt environment within a space. To resolve the imminent problems, it was essential to first understand healthcare and its features. The evolution of healthcare and the reason for its current situation along with its needs and requirements were investigated before catering to the ‘outpatients.’

sem 3 architectural design
The shatter of glass is a loud noise followed by pin drop silence. The silence symbolizes the peace one seeks at a retreat due to the occurrence of some disturbance in their life. From zoning to planning, as well as for facade design, the glass shatter serves as the base concept. The design is centered around an open space. The intermediate open spaces are for meditation; providing privacy with not so many walls, nestled in nature to create a calming atmosphere. The maze leading to the lake is symbolic of the journey of a disturbed mind through ups and downs to achieve peace, which is experienced by the lakeside.

The chapel is an open one, accommodating walls of different materials symbolizing elements such as nature, light, reflection, simplicity and chaos. A devotee can simply sit in front of any wall of their choice and meditate and reflect.

Mapping BKC sem 7 urban study
The project brief was to conduct urban documentation and present the analysis as well as suggested design concepts for a 1km radius in BKC. The documentation included study of residential and commercial factors along with that of the urban fabric in the specified area. BKC, an upcoming commercial district, includes both commercial complexes as well as housing ranging from low income to slums.

sem 9 architectural design
The requirement of an IT work environment is an open planned office with multiple interaction pockets to maximise chance encounters. The collision of different departments enhances productivity due to exchange of knowledge and ideas. With these ideas in a mind, the design took off with an atrium and 2 symmetrical blocks butting into it. Further, stepping back of floors was done to create interaction spaces and to allow the atrium to breathe The structure of the company beginning from the locally stationed executive is Programming, Administration, Accounts, Sales, Transportation & Facilities and Management.

Community housing, from historic times, develops around a common central space. This ‘community space’ forms the essence of the settlement. It is the heart of the settlement where all the social and cultural activities take place.

On a micro level this space becomes the courtyard in a ‘wada’ or an atrium in a mid-rise. The success of this community space is what creates a good neighbourhood. In an attempt to bring back this community space, 6 residential buildings with a connected clubhouse rooftop are designed to promote cultural exchanges not just on the ground level but at the roof level as well.

07 Rural Housing, Panju sem 4 architectural design
Accessible only by jetty, Panju, a small vehicle free island on the outskirts of Mumbai, is a rural setup in an urban fringe giving it a unique character. Rural houses are typically oriented along a thoroughfare or around a courtyard, where the doors of every house are open for all while the privacy of the residents is maintained by a buffer. The projected residents include fishermen, sand diggers and workers living in hostels/dormitories. Designing around a communal space was the conceptual idea for the project. 6 Shopkeepers homes, 5 fishermen homes, 4 sand diggers homes and 1 dormitory have been provided around 3 communal spaces of which 1 is open for the village with a public utility pavilion
