Duduza Taxi Driver hijacked and left for dead managed to call family and catch robbers!

Two male suspects were arrested in Tsakane on Wednesday, June 13 by members of the Flying Squad Unit after they shot and hijacked a local taxi driver. The local taxi was transporting them to John Dube from Duduza after the driver picked them up, as they stopped his taxi pretending to be passengers. At an open field towards John Dube section, the two suspects took out a firearm and ordered the driver to stop, then shot him at the back of his head. They then pulled him out of the vehicle assuming that he was dead and threw him on the field before driving away with his taxi. But the victim was able to call his family who immediately reported the matter to Duduza Police Station. Const. Gift Sinuma and Zodwa Zwane received the complaint, and rushed to the scene immediately. They then issued a lookout message of the hijacked vehicle over the radio soon as they had all details. “The message was picked up by a nearby flying squad vehicle, which spotted the de-

scribed car and arrested the suspects in it. They also recovered the unlicensed firearm which was used during the hijacking,” said Sgt. Manaka, SAPS Communication Officer in Duduza. “The case of hijacking was opened in Duduza, and the two suspects are detained in Tsakane for being found in possession of hijacked vehicle and unlicensed firearm,” said Manaka. Early last year a suspected robber lost his life after his head was crushed by the driver of the taxi they tried to hijack in Duduza extention 19. Three thugs tried to run away after their intentions failed, but one fell and the driver they were trying to hijack reversed on his head crushing it. The man died on the scene. “I appreciate the effort by police to react swiftly and effectively by using available resources to sensitize other unit of the crime committed, to squeeze the space for criminals to operate,” said Lt. Col. Bheki Mhlungu - Duduza SAPS Station Commander.

Eskom announces return of load shedding due to protest! The generation and distribution of electricity across Eskom’s network is constrained from Thursday, 14 June 2018, due to the acts of sabotage and intimidation that characterise the current industrial action by members of the trade unions. There have been several incidents of road blockades, attacks on staff, and wilful damage of electricity infrastructure. As a result, all road coal deliveries have been stopped for security reasons. The safety of all our employees is of paramount importance to us during this time. The power stations that are worst-affected by the industrial action are Hendrina, Camden, Kendal, and Arnot. We appreciate and thank our employees who continue to work hard to keep the lights on.

What is load shedding?

EAST MEETS WEST: Top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un and United States President Donald Trump shook hands and started the first-ever DPRK-US summit on Tuesday (12 June 2018). Kim and Trump entered the venue separately at the Capella Hotel on Singapore's resort island of Sentosa. The two leaders shook hands for a few seconds with a row of the two nations' national flags in the background. "This is just a new beginning," said Trump while shaking hands with the young Kim.

As South Africa’s primary electricity supplier, Eskom’s mandate is to ensure security of supply to service the South African economy and society. Eskom therefore generates, transports and distributes electricity – and this is managed predominantly by Eskom for the entire country; however, Eskom only directly supplies more than 5 million households which means that most of us are supplied by municipalities. Eskom will continue to provide regular updates about the state of the power system through various media platforms. 086 00 ESKOM 086 00 37566 SMS: 35328 Eskom Toll Free Crime Line: 0800 11 27 22

Mayor Busi Modisakeng returns to Ratanda for Sedibeng S.O.D.A! The 2018 State Of the District Address was delivered by first female Mayor of the Sedibeng District, Cllr Busi Modisakeng in her hometown Ratanda township on Friday (1 June 2018). Considering the trending topics of the past few months, Cllr Modisakeng counted the event that we have experienced, learned and commemorated a number of events. “Human Rights Day, Freedom Day, May Day, Africa Day, Local Government Auditor General’s Consolidated Report, hashtag (#MeToo) movement, Child Protection Week – Indeed the list is endless. And, I want to believe that –with so much in our horizon – we are on the right path,” said the Mayor. The main message from the District Mayor overall: “Together, we stand and divided we fall. Indeed, renewal and unity within all spheres of government, starts with us – all our local municipalities, Emfuleni, Lesedi and Midvaal and the district to work together to improve the lives of our people. We are to strengthen our institutions, provide effective and efficient basic services and implement our Flagship projects.” Here is a summary of her official address to the people of Sedibeng: “I take this important moment to reflect, acknowledge and share the opportunities and challenges of above a Nine hundred thousand (900 000) people of Sedibeng District Municipality.” On Youth and Opportunities “We are glad that the children in the district will benefit from the planned smart schools, schools of specialization spearheaded by our MEC. We will engage the Higher Education to bring home College of Specialization to change the skills level of our region. Our economy is thirsty for the passion, ambition and dreams of our young people. Programmes such as Tshepo 1 Million are to be rolled out throughout our struggling communities and young people. The future belongs to them. We are united with all social and government partners to promote “Read to Lead Campaign” and make reading fashionable. We are to join in the footsteps of Mama Sisulu and take steps for our children’s development and their ability to cope with the 4th Industrial Revolution opportunities and challenges. This is our first step towards building our region – developing our kids’ literacy. Our children are the leaders of tomorrow. The future is in our hands, right in this house. Our older persons and children are the test of democratic society to care for its people. We are engaging with our local municipalities and private sector to build a district wide student financial aid scheme to collectively invest in our young people’s talents and dreams in line with regional strategic development direction. We have spent R760 000 in 2017 and 2018 combined, to assist needy students and build our skills base in the region. In Sebokeng, MEC Panyasa Lesufi Launched a progressive and revolutionary programme to empower, train our unemployed young people and provide job opportunities to Gauteng youth via Thint’iMillion. On Safety and Security “Working together with our provincial government, additional police personnel, high performance vehicles have been added to improve police response and visibility. I am honoured to share that in this risky and tough work, we can all commend them on the following: 1.Sedibeng Community Safety Forum is the best and effective community safety forum in Gauteng; 2.Vanderbijlpark SAPS is the best improving police station in Gauteng led by Commander Brigadier Hoaene.

Other important milestones include: Sedibeng Cluster SAPS is the number 1 cluster in the province in crime prevention; Meyerton SAPS is the number 1 station in Gauteng for crime prevention, De Deur is number 3, in addition, Evaton and Sebokeng SAPS listed in the top 10 of best police stations in Gauteng. Back in February, the province, South African Police Service jointly with the law enforcement agencies have set targets for every station, every cluster and every commander to reduce crime by 50% in the 40 high priority police stations and 12 clusters across our province. Specialised police units have been re-introduced to focus on trio crimes (which is car-jackings, house and business robberies) and gender-based violence.” On Good Governance “The Auditor General, Kimi Makwetu, presented the outcomes 2016/17 of the state of 257 municipal councils financial health. The district and its two locals (Lesedi and Emfuleni) did not receive clean audits. In the entire Gauteng, we have one municipality that have achieved a clean Audit, it is none other than Midvaal Local Municipality.Cllr Bongani Baloyi, I congradulate you in achieving a clean

bill of financial health. In our effort to develop a culture of clean governance and the rule of law, we have instituted fraud and corruption hotline numbe (0860 061 022). I therefore, urge the community to use the hotline number to report any abuse of council property – cars, buildings or even information. And your identity will be protected. Secondly, we have introduced paperless council agenda system, resulting in savings on paper and printing costs by 80%. On Jobs and Economic Development “Sedibeng region has above the Provincial unemployment rate of 26.7% whereas Sedibeng District Municipality has more than 31.9 %. The youth unemployment rate is at an unfortunate 41.7%. The percentage of over 20 years with matric is 32.8%. We will open more training and development opportunities together with our social partners to raise the level of skill base in our youth and women. We have spent R23 million in direct procurement on empowering our SMMEs for 2017/2018. In line with Provincial TMR, 37% of municipal direct procurement came from township suppliers. The following beneficiaries from our direct municipal procurement: • 21% on Women Owned Businesses; • 16% on Youth Owned Businesses; and • 1.26% on People with Disability Owned Businesses We have set the following targets for the year 2018 -2019.

• Procure 50%of municipal direct spend from Women Owned Businesses; • Procure 30% of municipal direct spend from Youth Owned Businesses; and • Procure 2% of municipal direct spend from People with Disability Owned Businesses Growth and Development Strategy “Our strategy review resulted in six (6) strategic pillars for our regional development. we will work with all spheres of government and the private sector, non-profit organisations and to revitalise and diversify our economy, to stimulate investment, job creation and increase the quality of life of our people.” 1. Institutional capacity development, good governance, coordination, cooperation, partnerships. 2. Regional infrastructure development, nodal (such as Special Economic Zones) and corridor development, of which is including housing and land). 3. Township revitalization and community development (inclusive of pro-poor development). 6. Improve regional attractiveness and competitiveness through an improved enabling environment, in order to attract investment.

The above pillars are developed in order to Transform, Modernise and Reindustrialise our region.” Flagship Projects “ArcelorMittal South Africa for R30 million investment towards development of Matlafatso Incubation Hub in Vanderbijlpark. The Incubation Hub was a fruit of public – private partnership between the Department of Trade and Industry and ArcelorMittal South Africa. Our investment in agriculture infrastructure projects will see in excess of three million rand (R3 million) for the development of Emfuleni Milling Plant. Unlock production capacity of agro-processing and agriculture as well as support programme for the emerging farmers and the agri-park development on Western Part of the District in Vanderbijlpark is one of our flagship projects.” Our district is finalising a partnership with the National Youth Development Agency to fund and increase skills and youth empowerment programmes across our local municipalities for the next 10 years. On Tourism “We have since established Vaal River City Tourism Company to consolidate all our regional profiling, product development, and to enhance strategic support for destination marketing in the region. We have provided training and employment for 35 young people to become Tourism Safety and Information Monitors; and created

a Hospitality learnership programme for 150 young people.” On Health “Due to the nature of our economic industries, Midvaal and Emfuleni Local Municipalities have been declared Vaal Air Shed Priority Area and Lesedi Local is a Highveld Priority Areas. Simply that means – the pollution in the air we breathe is of great concern for the health of our people. In the next few months our focus will be on: • Law enforcement and health surveillance of premises, • Development of Air Quality Management Plan, review and restructuring of the Environment Health Management Unit. • Boiketlong Informal Settlement will benefit from hand-out of 1000 methanol stoves by Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. • HIV/AIDS have been budgeted for approximately R8 million for the next financial year, of which will be divided in line with the grant conditions to our local municipalities - Lesedi, Midvaal and Emfuleni. A number of our clinics have started to operate for 24 hours a day.” On Disaster Management Due to the lack of funds for disaster management services, SANTAM partnership with our district have much to be celebrated, to date the programme has resulted in the installation of Fire Panel, Call Points, Smoke and heat detectors and sound beacons in Midvaal for 17 old age homes and children’s homes, and Lesedi have benefited 14 of the same homes. Emfuleni installation programme have been prioritised for this quarter and next quarter. On Basic Service Delivery The upgrading of Sebokeng Wastewater Treatment Works have seen approximately R655 million rand capital spend; which the completion date was revised from 2017 to 2018. This investment will support a residential development to the tune of above 75 thousand sites. Meyerton Works have seen approximately R150 million spend since initiation. It has resulted in 177 employment opportunities for the locals in Midvaal. Subcontractors were trained by Rand Water Foundation on business development and management. This investment is forecasted to support more than 26 thousand residential developments in Midvaal. Leeuwkuil Wastewater Works Upgrade is at a design phase and it is expected to cost over R300 million, of which R100 million have been made available by National Department of Human Settlement. This works is critical for the precincts and developments around Vereeniging, Sharpeville, Unitas Park and Bedworth Park. Lesedi Local Municipality have a number of housing projects such as KwaZenzele, Shalimar Ridge, Obed Nkosi and Ratanda, whereas Emfuleni Local Municipality has the following areas – Rustervaal Housing Project, Sharpeville Hostel, Bophelong, Boiketlong as well as Old Vereeniging Hospital. To date in Midvaal, Savanna City has 896 beneficiaries and more than 500 have been handed over to Human Settlements department for allocations. Together with the Department of Human Settlement, we have started Title Deeds Backlog Programme in order to fast track handing of title deeds in the region. Lesedi is successfully implementing the programme, whereas Emfuleni is resolving number of teething issues. The Evaton Urban Renewal Project is coordinated and driven by Provincial Human Settlement of which is budgeted to the value of R22,5 million in 2018/19 and approximately R43 million was spend in the current year.

They are among 35 chosen designers from around the world. In remembrance of the 1976 uprising in Soweto and in celebration of today’s youth, especially women, the pair have named the line: “WARRIOR”. “This collection is reflective of all aspects of tradition and culture. We strive to always show diversity in our work through demonstrating architecture in motion, which is informed by keeping abreast with the latest trends, pop culture, and societal discussions,” says Quiteria Kekana, co-designer at Quiteria & George. “We found it of vital importance to close the gap and drive a dialogue about youth and women empowerment. In a world that is driven by patriarchy, dissolution and imbalances, it is crucial as creatives to recall the disempowered and place their discourse in the forefront.” George Malelu, co-designer at Quiteria & George, adds: “To strive and find the warrior in today’s young women, the aesthetic of our designs focuses on the pre and post Democracy to create the synergy between the two women, because these generations feed off from each other. This is for women as they continue to build, love and nurture by displaying insurmountable strength.” Quiteria & George, with over four years in the industry have a formidable rap sheet in the local fashion industry and are no strangers to dressing celebrity A-listers. The pair have designed for various shows including the Miss South Africa pageant 2018, African Fashion International (AFI), Durban Fashion Fair, Arise Fashion Week in Nigeria, as well as Johannesburg Fashion Week. Dakar Fashion Week, which is planned and executed by Adama Paris – whom is well respected in the fashion industry was created to showcase African talent and to celebrate fashion by revealing the cultural riches of the continent. It is a space where supporting industries, such as music and hair get an opportunity to grow their network, celebrates African beauty and the emancipation of African women. Moreover, It offers young designers a platform to display their talent to the rest of the world.

Aggression. Anger. Abuse. Bullying – all lead to violence!

W

hy are we such an aggressive generation?

We are hurt people and therefore we will continue to hurt others, especially when it comes to the youth. Violence has become such a norm to problem solving because of the growing culture to suppress feelings of anger and disappointment. We’ve heard sayings like “indoda ayikhali” but what alternatives are given to young men who are given this advice? Men are under so much pressure that even when they are abused they are ashamed to speak up. Young men are programmed to take in abuse, to hide their feelings, to bottle up anger, disappointments, society has no room for failure when it comes to men. Young boys and girls are socialized differently and yet there is an expectation to have social cohesion. We breed monsters in our boys and work so hard on breeding queens with our girls. Do we see the contrast? Young men grow up in homes and societies were women are being abused daily. Relationships have become so complex that when a woman ends the relationship they are at risk of loosing their own lives too. “if I can’t have you no one else can” The problem I see here is that this vicious circle will not end anytime soon, until men lead and say something. We need our men to say enough is enough, we need them to reprimand their peers whom they see abusing women and children or even those who hold these stereotypical ideas. We need them to say to our boys use your words and not your fists because violence is a disease and you don’t cure a disease by spreading it to more people In the past few weeks there was a teenage girl that was killed during a fight in the classroom by another teenage girl.

I bet those who fought and died in the struggle to fight for freedom and the right to education a turning in their graves because schools have become war zones. Teachers also being stabbed by learners. When will it all end? Did you know it takes 4 generations to recover from just one act of violence? We continue to leave in this chaos because of fear to reprimand. Siya saba!!! Our anger is from generations to generations and the vicious circle continues. We know the abusers and we know the bullies, some are our friends and others are our family members. Do we call a spade a spade when we discuss with them, our silence is not really helping. The boy child has been neglected for the longest time. Its not too late to teach them that violence in not part of love, that anger is a sign that healing needs to take place, that healing is just a conversation away and that failure is not final “It’s easier to build strong children than to fix broken adults” Frederick Douglass Lets help the boy child so that they can grow up to be kings that they are meant to be to love and to protect.

We’ve heard sayings like “indoda ayikhali” but what alternatives are given to young men who are given this advice?
