September marks the annual Heritage Month in South Africa. Heritage Month recognises aspects of South African culture which are creative expressions such as music and performances, historical inheritance, language, the food people eat as well as the popular memory.

In line with government’s programme to celebrate the centenary year of Tata Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu, Heritage Month 2018 will be commemorated under the theme “The Year of Nelson Rholihlahla Mandela: Advancing Transformation of South Africa’s Heritage Landscape”.

On September 20, the group from SAPS Heidelberg Crime Prevention , Lesedi Traffic, Cluster Youth Crime Prevention Desk, Office of the Mayor-Lesedi Municipality, Cluster Social Crime Prevention Co-ordinators, Communication Officers conducted school at Mountainview Secondary School situated in Bergsig suburb east of Heidelberg.

During the class and learners searches, two packets of cigarettes, two boxes of matches, a pair of scissors, three plastic packets containing dagga and bottle of gin were found abandoned. No arrests were made, but students were warned not to bring such items to school. The Station Commander applauded the members who participated in the school search.

Ranger stolen in Joburg Foreign national found with several drug types recovered within 3 valued at over R12,000 hours in Boksburg! arrested in Nigel!

A white Ford Ranger stolen on Wednesday afernoon, September 12, at Fairlands in Johannesburg was recovered in Boksburg within hours by the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Public Order Policing (EMPD POPs) Task Team members.

On realizing that his vehicle had disappeared, the owner immediately informed his tracking company which in turn provided the EMPD POPs Task Team with tracking coordinates leading to the location of vehicle in a yard at Van Dyk Park (Boksburg). The recovered vehicle was found parked displaying false number plates with its dashboard badly damaged and the ignition tampered with. No arrests were made as no one was home at the house. After completion of the necessary formalities the recovered vehicle was taken to SAPS Van Ryn pound in Benoni for safekeeping and for further investigations.

Early Saturday, September 15, the EMPD Drug Enforcement arrested a male foreign national for possession of narcotics in Nigel following a tip off from the members of that community.

The named suspected drug-dealer had his movements and place monitored for a few hours before the metro police pounced at his place and uncovered various types of drugs.

Over 16 crystal methamphetamine packets, eight packets of khat, 60 rocks, and eight packets of nyaope with the street value of R12,400 were discovered.

Two cellphones were also confiscated from the suspect.

The 30 year old suspect was detained at Nigel police station on charges of possession and dealing in narcotics.

Minister Molewa dies! Usuzosetshenziswa “HER PASSING IS A TRAGEDY TO ALL” - UNION

South Africa has learnt with shock about the sad news of the untimely passing-on of the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Ms Edna Molewa on Saturday, September 22.

The Presiding Officers of Parliament, Speaker Baleka Mbete of the National Assembly Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Ms Thandi Modise, ran short of words to express their deep sorrow and disbelief at losing such a fine and dedicated servant leader of the people.

Minister Molewa worked with absolute dedication and integrity since becoming a Member of Parliament in 1994. Parliament cherishes her contributions in building South Africa's young Parliament and all its systems, as she became the first female Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Trade and Industry in 1994.

“Her passing-on is a tragedy and a great loss to our country, the continent of Africa and the world over, because Minister Molewa leaves us at a critical time when some of the warnings about environmental degradation have come to pass. We trust that on the occasion of passing on, millions more people in this country and across the world would make new pledges to spare no effort in protecting our environment,” said Parliament in a statement.

The Liberated Metalworkers Union of South Africa has noted with shock the news of the passing away of the Minister of Environmental Affairs, Comrade Edna Molewa. ”She was a product of the trade union movement. In the 1980s, she played her role in the trade union movement. She was the second Deputy President of CCAWUSA, and later the first Deputy President of SACCAWU. The working class in South Africa is much poorer without her,” said the union in a statement.

LIMUSA says the death of Minister Edna Molewa comes after COSATU’s 13th National Congress elected Comrade Zingiswa Losi as COSATU’s first female President.

“What links the Congress to Edna Molewa is that she was the first female premier of the North West Province and she also role through the ranks of the trade union movement. She is counted amongst the true heroines of our democratic dispensation.”

“LIMUSA sends condolences to the ANC, the tripartite alliance, the ANC Women’s League, SACCAWU, the family of Comrade Edna Molewa and South Africa at large. We equally mourn the passing of this great women and leader of her time,” said Dloze Matooane, National Spokesperson of LIMUSA.

Government has announced the memorial and funeral services for the late Minister of Environmental Affairs Edna Molewa.

The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, 3 October, in Pretoria, the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on State Funerals announced on Monday evening after their meeting. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, 6 October 2018, in Pretoria.

With the next election season looming in South Africa, parties in Gauteng have taken the first step in campaigning for voters.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) and the Congress of South African Trade Unions, Cosatu, in Gauteng Province at the Beyers Naude Square in Johannesburg recently.

This marks the beginning of electioneering efforts by the two alliance partners for the African National Congress (ANC).

Printed pamphlets were handed over for a period of two weeks in the Johannesburg CBD, all written with a message of a reminder to citizens to be eligible to vote in next year’s elections.

The provincial branches of SACP and Costatu are the first political party to canvass in support the ANC, almost a year towards the National and Provincial Elections. Comrades wearing red will be seen all around Gauteng distributed flyers that carry voter education tips to encourage citizens to be ready to vote next year.

The first two weeks saw the SACP-Cosatu team mobilise the residents and the working class in the Linda Jabane (Johannesburg) District.

The joint election program moved to the Kempton Park in the City of Ekurhuleni to encourage citizens to vote for the ANC next year.

SACP and Cosatu in Gauteng continue their joint election program ahead of the 2019 National and Provincial Elections in Tshwane on Saturday, September 8 at the Arcadia Park. Other areas to be covered include Sedibeng and the West Rand.

Besides the printed material, the alliance partners in Gauteng plan to advertise their support for the ANC under the #ThumaMina campaign using mural walls and T-shirts.

Career dress up day at Sonqoba Primary school!

On Monday, September 17, Sonqoba Primary School in Katlehong held the ‘Careeer Dress Up’ event for grade 6 and 7 learners for encouraging the local scholars to explore the ‘World of Work’ and know what to do when they grow older.

The pupils were dressed as what they want to be when they grow up.

Sonqoba Primary invited local professionals like, Dr Shao, who spoke to the kids about being a doctor and how many years you should study in Medicine. She also advised them of the types of doctors they can choose to specialise in.

Local policewoman, Constable Zilalala advised them that being a police officer is not only about arresting people, it’s also about helping the community. She specializes with abused and traumatized children, she made it clear that should they have any problems they are free to come to her office. Thabo Mafego told

them about the importance of choosing sport as as a Career, he gave the students a soccer ball and other accessories to help with practising for with their skills.

Percy Molala From the social Development advised said: “you must passion to help people if you want to be a social worker.”

Experts from Legal Wise also provided advice about the legal field. Demonstrations from some of the Grade 6 and 7 students dressed as artisans, lawyers, nurses, doctors, soccer players, teachers , pastors was an inspiration to all who witnessed the presentations.

The annual event was made to educate the students of Sonqoba, Mr M Sehlali gave thanks to all the guests speakers and everyone who made that day a success.

Local entrepreneur and author, Issaac Mavuso was the master of ceremonies, playing a great part in supporting the school in this initiative.

Charity begins at home for the Templars!

The congregation of the Independent Order of True Templars (IOTT) have become the good Samaritans in the Ratanda community when they bought gifts for disability day care on Saturday, Septmeber 15.

The event was organized by the church in honour of assisting the Atlegang Stimulation Centre, based in the Ratanda community.

Mrs Julia Molema the principal of the Atlegang stimulation centre expressed her gratitude for the donation from the Templars.

“We would like to thank members of IOOTT who opened their hearts and donated these following items for Atlegang.

From the bottom of our hearts as Atlegang we say thank you. God

bless you,” she said.

Atlegang Stimulation Centre is a day care for children with disabilities. Molema says they have eight children at the moment. “We wish we could accommodate more children,” she explained.

The IOTT donated the following items to the early childhood development cente: Fridge, stove, (four plate), two oil heaters, three big bathtubs, three sets pots, 12 soaps, 12 face cloths, 12 cups, 12 plates, 12 bowls, 15 blankets and other groceries.

SA pupils get option to learn

Kiswahili

Starting in 2020, South African learners will have the option to take up Kiswahili as an optional second additional language.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga made the announcement at a media briefing recently.

The announcement follows a meeting by the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) held in Pretoria last week Thursday. At the meeting, the CEM approved the listing of Kiswahili as a language that will be offered to learners.

There are currently 15 non-official languages listed in the National Curriculum Statement (NCS) as optional subjects including the likes of French, German and Mandarin.

“There is unfortunately no African language in the list of languages. The origin of all these languages is outside the continent, except for Arabic, the Afro-Asiatic language family, which is spoken by North African Arabic countries. This continues to perpetuate colonial mentality and necessitated us to take action and rectify this,” said the Minister.

Motshekga said the introduction of Kiswahili in South African schools will help to promote social cohesion amongst Africans.

“It was used as a trading language and a means of inter-ethnic communication long before the coming of Europeans in Africa.

It is expanding to countries that never spoke it and has the power to bring

Africans together,” said the Minister.

Kiswahili is a Bantu language with lexical and linguistic similarities with many African languages spoken on the continent.

It is the third most spoken language, with more than 100 million speakers in Africa after English and Arabic.

School curriculum diversified to offer marine studies and coding in future Another curriculum addition is that of Marine Sciences which was approved by CEM. “The department has been working with the Two Oceans Aquarium to develop a maritime sciences curriculum from 2017.

The intention of this curriculum is to expand the offering of maritime studies subjects.

“This draft curriculum was submitted to Umalusi for evaluation in March 2018. The Two Oceans Aquarium has developed a number of maritime related programmes,” said the Minster.

Courses include topics in marine biology, oceanography, environmental sustainability and human interactions with the ocean.

Currently, there are 11 schools along the coast which offer maritime programmes, mainly maritime economics.

The new curriculum will supplement the offering for these schools of specialisation. This curriculum was approved for gazetting by the CEM.

Efficient recycling saves environment and create jobs!

S

ilver Mayosi from Brakpan, Anzac informal settlement, also known as the “Plastic City”, is one of the waste reclaimers who stand to benefit from being incorporated into the formal waste management processes.

“Every morning I get up and do my rounds with the trolley and my bag collecting waste such as plastic bottles, boxes, tins, plastic and metal, and I sort it categorically and take them to the buy-back center where every item is bought and paid for per kilogram.

For instance, there I can sell plastic bottles at R4.50 per kg , and clear plastic is R2.00 per kg and on the other side I also own a scrap metal weighing machine where I weigh scrap metals for recycling for other waste reclaimers and through that I can feed my family,” explains Manyosi Only 10% of an estimated 95 million tons of general waste generated in 2011 was recycled.

This is according to a baseline study conducted by the National Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) in 2012. Manyosi is one of thousands of citizens around the country who form part of this untapped multi-billion rand industry of waste recycling.

Hence, in recent years much focus has been placed on recycling efforts as

a way of reducing the damaging impact of waste on the environment.

“The City of Ekurhuleni has plans in place to complement the strides made nationwide to minimize waste through the process of stabilizing waste generation, improving the collection and processing of recyclables.

The implementation of this plan is aimed at the reduction of harmful environmental, social and health impacts of waste on people, whilst ensuring sustainable livelihoods from waste recovery,” said the City in a statement.

Like any other organization conscious of preserving the environment, the city subscribes to the waste minimization principles of Avoidance, Reduce, Re-use and Recycle. Part of the City’s ambitious plan is to join the waste reclaimers in its waste processing programmes, such as to regulate the price of all recyclables at the Waste Buy Back Centers.

“Therefore, all recycling companies buying recyclable waste from the City can have a flat rate that can give the waste reclaimers a decent income and a better life,” said Ekurhuleni.

3.STOCK FENCE AND GATES: REFERENCE NUMBER Fence – VTL 001

Description of scope of works: The supply and installation of the stock fence line around the balance of the Vopak Lesedi Terminal property including manual gates.

4.CLEARVU FENDING AND GATES: REFERENCE NUMBER Fence – VTL 002 Description of scope of works: The supply and installation of the Clearvu fence line between the main contract and the office area of the Vopak Lesedi Terminal property including manual gates, sliding gates and boom gates.

MASANDAWANA BRANCH now official in Ratanda!

On Saturday, September 24, the much anticipated launch of the Mamelodi Sundowns FC Supporter’s Club branch for the Ratanda/Heidelberg area took place at the Lebone Centre in Ratanda.

For months, the supporters of Masandawana looked for sponsorship in order to formalize their group. The event also saw the election of the organization’s office bearers that will lead the branch for two years. The elected leadership is as follows: 1.Chairman: William Ntsoereng 2.Deputy Chairperson: Dumediso Ndodo, 3.Secretary: Oupa Sebesebe, 4.Deputy Secretary: Dudu Zwane, 5.Treasurer: Thabang Motaung “The Mamelodi Sundowns Supporter’s Club constitution states that each member must belong to the branch, hence is very im-

Banyana win Cosafa Cup again!

Mzansi female football is at its finest when Banyana Banyana claimed a thrilling 2-1 victory over Cameroon in the final of the 2018 COSAFA Women’s Championship.

Gauteng Female Sports Star of the Year and Banyana captain, Refiloe, Jane proved the hero with both goals at the Wolfson Stadium in Nelson Mandela Bay on Saturday afternoon (September 22). Jane bagged a goal in each half, either side of a strike by Genevieve Ngo Mbeleck, as Banyana Banyana retained the title they won in Zimbabwe last year. It is a fifth win in six tournaments for the team and an excellent warm-up for the African Women’s Championship in Ghana in November.

South Africa started on the front foot and might have had two goals early on, but forward Jermaine Seoposenwe was unable to convert.

She first missed with a header and then shot tamely into the arms of Cameroon goalkeeper Annette Ngo Ndom as both opportunities went begging.

Cameroon had chances of their own though, and on one break found Abena Ninon through on goal from a tight angle and she shot wildly over the bar.

The home side took the lead in emphatic fashion just before halftime though as the ball fell to Jane 25-yards from goal and her shot arrowed into the bottom corner of the net, leaving Ngo Ndom with no chance.

South Africa led 1-0 at the break, but were almost made to pay for some hesitant defending 10 minutes into the second period when fullback Nothando Vilakazi lost possession in

the box, but with two shots at goal, Cameroon midfielder Raissa Feudjio could only shoot straight at home goalkeeper Kaylin Swart.

Swart was then forced into an excellent save from Madeleine Ngono Mani’s header from a free-kick, acrobatically beating the ball over her bar.

Cameroon did find their equaliser on 66 minutes though as Ngo Mbeleck showed some neat footwork in the box before placing the ball into the corner of South Africa’s net.

South Africa captain Janine van Wyk forced a save from Ngo Ndom with a free-kick from 30-yards, the keeper needing two attempts to make the stop.

Thembi Kgatlana had an excellent chance to score the winner from eight yards, but her shot was beaten away by Ngo Ndom.

But Banyana Banyana did grab the victory right at the death as Jane showed excellent pace to outsprint the Cameroon defence and then provided a composed left-footed finish low past a stranded Ngo Ndom.

South Africa has scored 13 goals in the tournament and conceded just two – against Madagascar (group stages) and Cameroon (final).

Banyana had six goal scorers – Linda Motlhalo scored four, Khanya Xesi three, Jermaine Seoposenwe and Jane two each, while Kgaelebane Mohlakoane and Nothando Vilakazi chipping in with one each.

Only Jane and defender Lebohang Ramelepe played every minute of the whole tournament.

Banyana win the COSAFA Women’s Champoinship for the second consecutive time.
