Govt. condemn attacks on Auditor-General officials!

On Wednesday (October 24), the Parliament’s Standing Committee on the Auditor-General has condemned, with strongest possible terms, threats to the officials of the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA) by unknown individuals from Emfuleni, Tshwane, Madibeng and Moretele Municipalities. This after the Auditor-General, Mr Kimi Makwetu, wrote to the committee, in which he detailed a series of threats to the lives of officials of the AGSA who are assigned to the four municipalities. The committee has implored the individuals concerned to desist from their criminal conduct immediately. The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Nthabiseng Khunou, said that anyone found to be obstructing the work of the AGSA should be criminally charged and face the full might of the law. “We call on the law enforcement agen-

cies to fully investigate sources of the threats and bring them to book. Parliament, provincial legislatures and municipal councils rely heavily on the audited financial statements by the AGSA in order to effectively hold the Executive accountable. An attack on the officials of the AGSA has indirect negative impact on the work of the legislative sector,” said Ms Khunou. The committee has appealed to the authorities at the four municipalities to fully cooperate with law enforcement agencies during the investigations. Ms Khunou said the committee will work closely with the Portfolio Committees on Police as well as Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to get an update on the progress of the investigations. The committee will also invite Mr Makwetu to get a full briefing on the

extent to which these threats have impacted on the work of the AGSA and what security measures are put in place to protect the affected employees. Meanwhile, the minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) Dr Zweli Mkhize has also condemned attacks and acts of intimidation on staff of the Auditor General. According to the Minister, staff members who have been deployed in municipalities to undertake audits of financial statements and performance information are being intimidated. “I am particularly urging all municipalities to fully cooperate with and support the staff of the Auditor-General. Municipalities are at the centre of the economic revival being championed by President Cyril Ramaphosa and as such, they need to show prudence in how they spend public finances,” Mkhize said in a statement.

Cogta said an official that is part of the auditing team in Emfuleni was shot and wounded recently. “The assailant entered the room at a bed and breakfast accommodation where they were staying and shot the auditor and stole the laptop computer. In other incidents, officials were threatened in Msunduzi and eThekwini municipalities earlier this year,” the department said. The Minister said it is unacceptable that AGSA staff are being attacked and intimidated when carrying out their duties. “All structures and spheres of government must provide full support and cooperation to the Office of the AGSA,” Mkhize said. The Minister has also urged law enforcement agencies to follow up on the reported incidents and ensure that the perpetrators are dealt with by the criminal justice system.

R.I.P Jabba:Tributes pour in for HHP! Tributes are pouring for South African hip hop legend and one of the pioneers of Motswako music, Jabulani Tsambo, popularly known as Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP). Tsambo, also known by his stage name ‘Jabba’, was discovered by his helper in his bedroom and was declared dead by emergency medical personnel. Born in Mafikeng on 14 September 1980, HHP passed away on Wednesday, October 24. Details around his death are not yet known. However, in the past, he spoke openly about his battle with depression. Arts and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa said HHP was a great advocate for African languages, which he masterfully fused with substance and flow like no other. “He will deservedly go down as one of the most influential and impactful SA hip hop artists of his generation,” the Minister said, adding that he was saddened by his sudden and tragic passing. Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture also expressed their concern that South Africa continues to lose some of the most influential artists at a young age. "While we mourn his loss, we are cognisant of the immense contribution that HHP has given not only to the industry but to humanity in general. He was a larger than life character that brought happiness through his music to throngs of music lovers in South Africa and beyond the borders of this country," said chairperson of the committee Xoliswa Tom. North West Premier, John Mokgoro said that HHP was a pioneer in his music genre and made the Setswana language more fun and

fashionable through his lyrics as well as putting Mahikeng and the province on the centre stage wherever he performed. One of the markers of his contribution was his respect and appreciation for vernacular languages, which he used as a vehicle to deliver his music. The committee extends its heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. "May his music and legacy live long in our hearts. Through his music he will live long beyond these sad days," Tom said. African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) Member of Parliament, Cheryllyn Dudley has expressed sincere condolences to family, friends and fans of South African Hip Hop artist and king of Motswako music. “The ACDP is saddened by reports of the passing of this young and much-loved artist whose music will live on as a reminder of him. South Africa has lost so many young artists and this affects us all for so many reasons including the incredible potential they had to contribute in greater measure to our entertainment industry and to economic growth,” said Dudley. Thousands of South Africans have also taken to social media to express their heartbreak over the 38-yearold’s passing. HHP is survived by his wife, his parents, two sisters, his son and nephew. The family have requested privacy.

South African musician Jabulani Tsambo, a.k.a Hip Hop Pantsula (HHP) has passed away at age 38.

New Gauteng Archives Centre key for saving and recording of memories!

Gauteng residents and institutions including schools, hospitals, municipalities, police, the courts, heritage and historical entities amongst others can finally make use of the Gauteng Provincial Archives Centre in Kagiso to store and access important records and information. During the official opening of the state-of the-art R350 million Centre on Wednesday, October 24 in Kagiso, Gauteng Premier David Makhura spoke about how the facility would serve as a memory bank for Gauteng. “The facility will help us preserve societal memory of historical value of Gauteng and its people. It will store official public documents that are 20 years or older from various entities including government, parastatals, NGOs, learning and research institutions. This will eliminate cases of distorted history told by different people from different angles,” said Makhura. Since its operation in 2017, the centre has received records and information from various entities and departments including Sedibeng and West Rand District Municipalities, City of Johannesburg, and from the following

departments: Co-operative Governance & Traditional Affairs, Transport, and Sport Arts Culture & Recreation. After 20 years of a record being preserved at the facility the public can access these for reference purposes in case they are not available anywhere else. Records not older than 20 years can still be accessed at the relevant entities.

26 Oct - 2 Nov 2018

Premier Makhura said: “Records on the known and unknown history of our liberation and the stories of our people will be stored and archived here. These entail files including audio and video records on occurrences such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Rivonia Trial, CODESA, records from municipalities, departments medical

records and any other of intrinsic value”. The facility will serve as a treasure house of information held on behalf of society. These include school registers; court records including deeds; building plans; births; marriages and divorce certificates; wills and land claims records. Despite Gauteng being the last province to build the Archives Centre it is among the few currently in operation. It has been assessed by the National Archives of South Africa as one of the best in the country and when in full operation will be a leading archival service facility. “Gauteng is investing rigorously in infrastructure and in transforming townships with about R40 billion already spent in building and upgrading schools, libraries, clinics, roads and the very same Archives Centre; said Makhura. The Gauteng Archive Centre has 26 staff members, 14 of them come from Kagiso. When it is fully operational, the centre will have over 40 staff members including archivists, administrators and technologists. It will operate weekdays from 8am to 5pm. It will also offer free WiFi and will be fully digitalised.

President opens first African train factory in Ekurhuleni! G

ibela, the Alstom-led BEE train manufacturing joint venture, hosted the President Cyril Ramaphosa for the official opening of its flagship train manufacturing plant in Ekurhuleni, the first of its kind on the continent. This is the site where 580 modern commuter trains will be built – by South Africans for South Africa. The official opening of the factory falls within Transport Month. Themed 'Transforming and Modernising Public Transport in Gauteng', Transport Month seeks to create awareness about transport as an enabler for economic growth. Gibela’s 53 000m 2 green field plant, spread over a 78ha site, was built at a cost of R1 billion within the scheduled 22-month construction period. Its manufacturing workshops, covering 33 000m 2 square metres, are designed in a modular format to facilitate a lean manufacturing process. At peak production, two cars a day, one and a half trains a week and 62 trains a year will be produced. The Gibela manufacturing team is gearing up to achieve maximum manufacturing capacity – never before achieved – by the end of 2020. “The plant provides South Africa with its own capacity to manufacture modern trains. This will have a massive, positive impact not only on South Africa’s commuting public, but also on the country’s economy”. The world-class plant features the latest innovations, mak-

ing for an advanced manufacturing process involving 250 linked industrial activities and the assembly of at least 10 000 parts,” explained the Gibela CEO, Thierry Darthout. The overall employment equity constitutes 49% female and 51% male with 635 full-time employees, 90% of whom are Black, according to Gibela. To meet the demanding local content requirement of at least 65%, Gibela has taken on board 54 South African suppliers to supply materials, parts and services. This has created more than 4 700 jobs which the company is supporting through its activities.

Looking ahead over the next 10 years, it is planned for the training centre to skill over 6 700 artisans, about 2 000 engineering technicians and nearly 600 professional engineers across South Africa’s rail sector.”

In addition to this, the factory has awarded 250 South African students for study in rail-related fields at South African tertiary institutions.

Gibela Factory a milestone for rail in SA Speaking at the unveiling of the factory to the public, President Ramaphosa said the factory is a great moment both for the development of passenger rail in South Africa, the economy, industrialisation and manufacturing in the country. The President went on to welcome the investment commitment, saying this project demonstrates the value of the partnership between the government, its agencies and the private sector, ensuring that public investment in infrastructure is effectively leveraged to promote industrialisation, localisation and job creation. "When we talk about the expansion of our economy, it is a place like this and people like you that we are talking about." After decades of under-investment in new trains for passenger rail transport, the President said this investment signifies a new era in the modernisation of the commuter rail network.

Restoring manufacturing and creating jobs

This factory will have a profound impact not only in the sphere of public transport but also in developing the country’s manufacturing capacity, President Ramaphosa said. "For instead of simply importing new train sets, we have used this opportunity to invest in local industry, capabilities and skills." This gives concrete expression to the government's determination – as articulated in the framework agreement adopted at the Jobs Summit which identified the growth of South Africa's manufacturing base as a key priority. After years of decline, President Ramaphosa said the government is determined to restore manufacturing as a growing sector of the economy, in large part because it has great potential to create jobs, support secondary industries and increase the export capacity. "This factory will demonstrate that South Africa has advanced manufacturing capabilities that will only gain in value over time." Turning to the rail sector, the President was of the view that the factory will serve as a catalyst for the transformation of passenger rail services and public transport more broadly. It demonstrates our determination to develop passenger rail as a critical enabler of economic growth and social development. Our railways must become the arteries of a growing economy that brings meaningful improvement in people’s lives."

I just want to take this opportunity to wish good luck to those who are already started writing their final examinations (and also to those who will be writing in few days to come). Dr Nelson Mandela once, said “It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine-worker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farm worker can become the president of a great nation.” Education a true soldier out of poverty. “I have a dream,” Martin Luther king Junior once said. My dream is that we can all be part of South Africa that will work hard in creating a place in which education is accessible to all. With education people of my country can have a shot at life to conquer their conditions. We can correct the misfortunes of the past by harnessing ideas of bright future. Education is our only way out of the pit of poverty. I know that you feel like this is the difficult time of your life, but please believe me when I say to you hard work really pays off. Just spend more time on your book's than on social media, your ‘boys/girls’ and negative friends. Life is simple! But we complicate it, by not following simple principles like working hard. It is no secret that the hard worker's make it! And the lazy ones suffer. Those who work hard at school get nice office job's, and the school bunkers become the field workers. It might happened that you didn't make it that much during the year, but that doesn't mean you still don't have a chance to make it now. Please always embrace possible thinking. Until you decide to change the channel and turn things around, negative thoughts will creep in. We all fail or doubt ourselves, but that doesn't mean it's the end off the road. Good-luck and trust your Creator more than anything, because with him anything is possible. Remember we praise a God that does miracles. Trust yourself that you will pass no matter how many times you've failed before. Good-luck! Good-luck! Good-luck! Remember to invite God before you read or revise your book's, even when you enter on your exam-room.

Closing Date: 31 October 2018 If you meet the requirements please forward your cv to: bongiwe.mthombeni@vopak.com

Good luck to Bantwana at FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup!

Bantwana coach Simphiwe Dludlu on Thursday, October 25, named her final 21-member South Africa’s National U-17 Women’s squad that will represent South Africa at the forthcoming 2018 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup scheduled for Uruguay from November 13 until December 1. The Bantwana coach admitted that it was not an easy process to trim the squad to 21 since almost all of the players in camp had shown the resolve to be part of the team going to the FIFA World Cup. Bantwana are pitted in Group B together with Mexico, Japan and Brazil as they attempt to reach the knockout stages of the competition. “Trimming the squad to the final 21 was not an easy process because we had brought in talented players in our provisional squad to select from,” Dludlu said. “The technical staff had to sit down and we had long and tough decisions to make to reach the final squad. But I am glad with the final product and this team
