Police are closely monitoring the situation around Ratanda location after the residents took to the streets protesting allegedly about electricity cut-offs and other service delivery issues.

The protests began on Monday, July 15, when a group of residents in the extension 23 area blockaded the R549 VaalDam road with rocks and burning tyres.

The situation intensified on the second day.

There were incidents of looting of foreign-owned tuck shops and some residents were stopped from going to school and work for about three days.

The Lesedi Local Municipality has confirmed that the protests disrupted some of the services and offices were closed.

One person is confirmed dead and many others injured during the riots.

The male victim was shot on the leg when police clashed with protesters near the Obed Nkosi section (picture in red border).

People also vandalized the construction site where new RDP houses are being built.

Some of the contractors in the project at Obed Nkosi went around local scap yards, managing to salvage some of their building materials and tools sold by looters.

The protests began over electricity cutoffs in parts of the community.

Other reasons included the Lesedi Local Municipality mayor’s reaction when she engaged residents during the strike.

Taxis collide in ‘Rush-hour’ morning dash!

One man was killed and sixteen others injured on Thursday, July 25, following a collision between two taxis on the R549 (VaalDam Road) in Ratanda.

"ER24 medics, along with other services, arrived on the scene at 08h24 to find the two taxis in the middle of the road. The passengers had already climbed out of the vehicles and were found walking around on the scene," said the emergency respons company.

The medics assessed the patients and found one man, lying inside the one taxi, had sustained numerous injuries and showed no signs of life. Nothing could be done for the man and he was declared dead. Sixteen other patients were assessed and found to have sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

The patients were treated for their injuries and were thereafter transported to nearby hospitals for further care. The details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations. Some commuters have

been asked by Mapepeza as to their opinion on what caused this accident. “These drivers drive like its ‘rush-hour’ on the roads to get more loads during the morning hours. Sometimes this is dangerous and can cause accidents,” said one commuter who wished to remain anonymous.

“The Gauteng government and Eskom acknowledge that consumers who continue to pay for electricity cannot continue to suffer due to the actions of those who are not paying.

The Gauteng Education Department says it accepts the community’s position that it did not torch the local Katlehong Primary School.

Earlier in July, two classrooms were set alight at the primary school during the service delivery protests in the Ekurhuleni township.

“Following the torching of Katlehong Primary School, the Gauteng Department of Education and Youth Development accepts the community’s position that they didn’t mobilise for the burning of the school, and the principal’s report which believed that, it might not be the community that burnt the school,” said the department. While the department accepted the community’s standpoint and it stated that there are no funds to repair the school, the department said it suspects that this act of arson might be the work of a lone member of the community. “It is important to note that we have an undertaking from the community to assist to track the culprit,” said Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.

Eskom, Gauteng partner to solve electricity challenges!

Eskom and the Gauteng government have agreed to collaborate to resolve electricity problems in the province.

“The Gauteng Provincial Government and Eskom have agreed to implement joint action to decisively deal with the problems of ongoing disruptions in the supply of electricity in a number of areas in the province,” said the power utility on Thursday.

On Tuesday (July 16), the Special Advisor to the Premier on service delivery and political management, Eric Xayiya, met with Eskom top management to discuss the ongoing problems regarding the increasing number of repeated equipment failures in some areas around Gauteng.

Eskom has reported that there are increasing incidents of illegal connections leading to overloading, which often result in failure of transformers and mini-substations.

This includes meter tampering, electricity theft and vandalism of infrastructure.

Eskom emphasised that increased equipment failure has a significant negative impact on operations, finances and safety of employees and the public at large.

“The police will act firmly and decisively against anyone obstructing Eskom from carrying out its work. Eskom will conduct audits and remove illegal connections, fix bypassed meters, issue tamper fines and ultimately restore electricity supply to paying customers,” said Eskom.

Meanwhile, the provincial government and Eskom will continue to engage with councillors and stakeholders in all affected areas to address all matters pertaining to the supply of electricity.

Eskom appealed to communities to stop illegal connections as it continues to experience an increasing number of repeated equipment failures in most areas.

Eskom issued a notice in June saying that is has been forced to stop work on substation repairs as well as maintenance operations in Gauteng. This was due to safety concerns of staff and debt that is on the increase.

The power utility has appealed to communities to report illegal connections and meter tampering, including when Eskom employees are involved.

The Eskom crime line number is 0800 11 27 22 for reporting any illegal connections.

Recently, the Lesedi Local Municipality has been under the spotlight when a SABC News report on the local government regarding corruption allegations towards the Municipal Manager was broadcast earlier this month. This also includes the Public Protector’s preliminary report that has been published claiming that the municipality has cases of tender corruption. Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebana (the Public Protector) has given The Lesedi Municipality an opportunity to respond before the report is made final.

According to local police, the situation still volatile with members of the SAPS POPs (Public Order Policing Services) on standby.

Last year in August, Ratanda residents protested over the same service delivery related issues that caused the recent riots.

Selling an RDP house within 8 years illegal! - MMC

“The selling of RDP houses undermines the government’s intention of eradicating homelessness.”

This is according to the City of Ekurhuleni Member of the Mayoral Council (MMC) responsible for Human Settlements, Councillor Lesiba Mpya.

His department believes it is because those beneficiaries who sell RDPs are vulnerable people who may not be able to acquire a home of their own after selling their RDPs. They, therefore, resort to returning to shacks and other informal settlements after selling the government-provided houses.

In terms of the Housing Act 107 of 1997, a beneficiary may not sell the house within the

first eight years of having taken occupation.

“The reason for this is because a title deed is issued to the legitimate beneficiary with an endorsement that it will require an exemption or government rejecting the mandatory buy-back offer for that property to be transferred to another person.

If you buy the house within the eight years of allocation, it will not be easy to change the title deed,” MMC for Human Settlements Lesiba Mpya said.

Should the beneficiary wish to sell the house, the government has first option to buy it and reallocate it to persons on the government-housing waiting list.

Many people also rent out their RDP house to others prior to the eight-year period.

This is also discouraged by government, as the law prohibits letting out an RDP for remuneration.

When an owner of RDP house wishes to sell it, after the expiry of the eight-year period, they need to ensure that the sale is done legally through a lawyer qualified to handle deeds of property transfer, commonly known as Conveyancers. People who fail to follow that process have, in many occasions, resulted in descendants of the supposed sellers claiming back the RDPs that would have remained in the names of their parents.

The Ladies Mantombazane Community-based Outreach Ratanda Branch hosted the praise and worship meeting at the Ratanda Extension 23 Hall on Saturday, July 6.

This year’s gathering was attended by Mrs Nomthandazo Wauchope, also known as ‘Nomthee’ originating from Kwa-Thema (Ekurhuleni).

She delivered the keynote sermon and encouraged women to unite in facing challenges in the community.

The Ladies-Mantombazane aims to teach women the principles and the laws of the Lord God. All women of all church denomina-

tions and fellowships are welcomed to join the Ladies-Mantombaza group.

The group specializes in identifying the poorest and most vulnerable people, lending a helping hand wherever they can. There are also prayer and worship gatherings where people in places like the orphanages, community-carecentres, women survival shelters across the country.

The women-only members gather every month in homes and churches across their communities.

Ladies Mantombazane Outreach is a non-profit organization was

founded in 2016 by a very firm feminine structure from various locations around Gauteng and neighbouring regions like Balfour, Standerton, Tsakane, Duduza, Kwa-Thema, Soweto, Middleberg and more acorss the country.

Kiswahili to be a subject in schools! Katlehong couple arrested with Khat worth R22,000!

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says the Council of Education Ministers has agreed to introduce Kiswahili as a subject in South African schools.

Motshekga said this when she briefed the media ahead of leading a debate on the department’s budget vote in Parliament on Tuesday afternoon (July 16).

“I am delighted to announce that the Council of Education Ministers overwhelmingly agreed to incre-

mentally introduce Kiswahili in our schools. There is a high level of enthusiasm about this.”

Motshekga said a few schools, mainly around Gauteng, have been identified to pilot the language offering this year – with an aim of fully implementing it next year.

“Kenya and Tanzania have committed to assist with the training of educators and the development of appropriate learning and teaching support materials in Kiswahili.”

A man and his woman accomplice were arrested in their Katlehong home after police arrested on Tuesday afternoon, July 16, after a plastic bag containing blocks of the drug “Khat” was uncovered in their house.

The estimated street value of the seized narcotics is worth R22,000.

“When the house situated on Mbasane Street at Hlongwane Section was searched the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU), members came across a transparent plastic

bag with seven blocks of Khat.

In addition, cash amounting to R480 was also confiscated as it was believed to be proceeds from illicit dealings,” said Ekurhuleni police spokesperson, Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago.

The 26 year old woman and a 27 year old man were detained at Katlehong police station (Ramokunupi) on charges of possession and dealing in narcotics.

They were expected to appear in the Palmridge Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, July 17.

A 22 year old male suspect arrested for rape at Bergsig suburb in Heidelberg on Thursday morning.

It is believed that on Wednesday (July 24) the mother dropped off her children from school and left home in Bergsig. Accoding to reports, the elder brother (the suspect) was also in the house. The brother sent another sister to the shop to buy some snacks. This is when the suspect took the victim to his room, undressed and raped her.

The mother was informed by the child the following day when she was feeling pains.

After the doctor’s visit the mother reported the matter to the Heidelberg Police.

“Police waisted no time to arrest the suspect. The Station Commander Colonel Amanda Dorothy Viljoen appreciated the efforts made by the parent to report the matter to the Police or to break the silence on children abuse,” said Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate (police spokesperson). The arrested suspect has appreared before Heidelberg Magistrate Court to face the rape charges.

Mzansi mourns passing of icons Johnny Clegg and Mama Nomhle!

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his heartfelt sadness at the passing in recent days of anti-apartheid cultural activists, performers and National Order of Ikhamanga recipients Jonathan “Johnny” Clegg and Mama Nomhle Nkonyeni.

Clegg passed away on Tuesday, July 16, in the presence of his family following an extended illness.

The award-winning singer, songwriter, anthropologist and academic was 66-years-old.

“A beloved, inspirational and heroic voice has fallen silent and leaves all of us bereft of an exceptional compatriot and icon of social cohesion and non-racialism,” said President Ramaphosa.

The President offered his condolences to Clegg’s family, friends and followers and the broad range of artists and organisations with whom he collaborated in South Africa and internationally.

During his performance career of four decades, Clegg sold more than five million albums.

“Johnny Clegg’s special relationship with Sipho Mchunu in Juluka, as well as with Dudu Zulu in Savuka, gave apartheid-era South Africa a window on the non-racial South Africa we were determined to achieve,” said the President.

“Johnny Clegg will always live on in our hearts and in our homes as we replay his stirring blend of cultural celebration and political resistance. We have lost a special patriot.”

In 2012, Clegg became an esteemed member of the National Order of Ikhamanga – awarded in silver – for his excellent contribution to and achievement in the field of bridging African traditional music with other music forms, promoting racial understanding among racially divided groups in South Africa under difficult apartheid conditions, working for a non-racial society and being an outstanding spokesperson for the release of political prisoners.

President Ramaphosa also ex-

pressed his condolences to the Nkonyeni family as well as friends and associates of the late actress across the African continent and other parts of the globe. Nomhle Nkonyeni passed away on Wednesday, July 10, at the age of 77.

“Mama Nomhle’s charisma and courage made her an extraordinary artist and compatriot who committed herself to the liberation of all South Africans and the broadening of South Africa’s cultural richness.

She overcame the barriers of race and gender imposed by apartheid to become a cultural icon, who was duly honoured with the National Order of Ikhamanga,” said President Ramaphosa.

Nkonyeni’s career as an actress spanned 55 years. It saw her perform ground-breaking anti-apartheid theatre and mastered roles on stage and screen nationally and internationally.

“South Africa is a better place today due to the courage, resilience and irrepressible creativity of these two special icons from whom we are now taking our leave,” said President Ramaphosa.

“R300m Fund to help kasi economy” - Mabuza Deputy President David Mabuza says government is implementing several interventions to ensure that there is investment in the township economy.

This, he said, includes revitalising township and rural industrial parks and establishing a township entrepreneurs’ fund to help small players in townships to scale up their businesses.

The Deputy President said this when he responded to oral questions in the National Assembly on Thursday (July 25).

“To date, government has already revitalised 10 industrial parks in its first programme, with the next phase targeting five industrial parks, with money already spent estimated at R300 million. “[The industrial parks] have already created industrial space to over 670 enterprises, which in turn provided direct employment to over 41 000 people, primarily from each industrial park surrounding our townships.

“In the next four months, government will launch the township entrepreneurs’ fund, which will assist entrepreneurs to scale up their existing projects,” said Mabuza.

ANC MP Violet Sizani Siwela had asked how government was ensur-

ing that the economy is regulated in a manner that results in investment in the townships.

The Deputy President said revitalising rural and township economies requires a focus on the twin objectives of investing in economic infrastructure and enterprise development on one hand, and consistent application and adherence to the regulations as provided for in the country’s laws on the other.

He said this would assist in addressing challenges that are faced by most township entrepreneurs – from a lack of the necessary economic infrastructure to access to markets, among others.

Some of these challenges, Mabuza said, often led to township entrepreneurs’ businesses caving, which often results in tensions between local and foreign nationals.

“Government’s interventions in this regard are focused on these two areas in order to build platforms wherein future resources can be applied to increase our impact…”

Mabuza said this was done in order to facilitate broad-based economic participation in order to achieve inclusive growth and facilite the transformation of the economy.

SASSA funeral deduction notice!

The South African Social Security Agency wishes to advise social grant recipients that upon applying for a funeral policy they should deliver the mandate forms to SASSA for capturing and permitting the deduction.

It is a requirement for any beneficiary to grant permission to SASSA for a funeral policy premium to be deducted from their social grant, and this is done through submission of the mandate that they would have received from the approved financial service who are providing them with a service.

"Only 10% (ten percent) of your grant may be deducted for one funeral policy and no funeral policy may be deducted against children’s grants," confirmed the

Gauteng SASSA Spokesperson, Nandi Mosia.

SASSA also strongly condemns social grant beneficiaries who give their SASSA cards to loan sharks in exchange of a loan. Social grant is meant to meet the basic needs of the poorest of the poor. “SASSA exercises zero tolerance to fraudulent activities. Giving your card to loan sharks is an offence as they confiscate your card and demand your pin,”explained Mosia.

SASSA urges beneficiaries to refrain from giving out their cards and pins but instead protect such to be able to protect their social grant.

Empowering girls by girls!

Group to host 3rd annual seminar

Ntombazana Soul Sisters is a non-profit organization that exclusively focuses on girls and young women, providing personal development programmes.

Established in 2013 by Lebogang Tutubala, the group aims to empower young people in their communities to be empowered and use personal development to make their lives better. Since then, the group hosts a large membership of young ladies, including girls as young as 13 years old.

“As Ntombazana Soul Sisters we believe that when you empower a woman, you empower the nation,” said Sheila Mazibuko (Treasurer

of the organization). Based in the Heidelberg region in the Lesedi Local Municipality, the girls-only group is hosting their annual Ntombazana Seminar on Saturday, August 3.

The third annual event is a showcasing of the activities of the organization when it comes to personal development for young women.

“The theme for this year is: She Is Boss!”

We encourage young women to take charge of their lives.” said Lebohang during the interview with Mapepeza.

The Mantombazana Seminar is set to feature speakers who will discuss issues and solutions in subjects like personal finance, entrepreneurship and health. “There will also be performances from local artists to entertain the guests. Every year, we give artist a platform to showcase their talent and content,” explains Project Coordinator Busisiwe Mbuda.

I have personally registered and I know I used to enjoy coding as one of the modules in one of the subject in my first year at varsity. My daughter is in grade 11 and I am going to expose her to this.

MANDELA DAY CELEBRATED ACROSS COMMUNITIES

The officers at the Katlehong SAPS including the management, CPF members, YCPD and patrollers spared their 67 minutes cleaning at one of the community’s church.

Pastor Phahla, who is the church leader the New Hope in Christ Worship Centre (NHC), was so delighted by this privilege having law- enforcers to clean at his church. The acting Station Commander Colonel Phakama Gcaza said, “our job is a high-risk work and people who pray for us everyday are the people who go to church. So we were encouraged to clean for people who pray for us."

Dipaleseng Local Municipality Councilors, led by the Executive Mayor, Clr. Mafunda Makhubu and the Speaker of Council, Clr. Khethiwe Moeketsi commemorated Mandela Day by handing over three fully furnished housing units to the less fortunate in Phomolong in Grootvlei, Nthoroane and Ridge View in Siyathemba. The councilors also took some time to partake in renovation work of 90 year old Mrs. Painini Eva Masangane’s dilapidated house in Extension 5 in Siyathemba as part of the day’s activities on Friday, July 19.

The Curious Young Girls (CYG) is an organization aiming to close the gap of inequalities between the youth and the elderly. During Mandela Day, the group held an event where they hosted the senior citizens of Xavier South in Johannesburg. The elders expressed the utmost gratitude as they were treated to gifts, good food, entertainment and fun. The event was organized by Kabelo Papale, a young woman and member of CYG. The group, founded by Ouma Khasu pledged its continued support for the elderly as social.

The Thembinkosi Special Needs School, situated at Hospital View near Winnie Mandela (Tembisa) was one of the several schools which benefited during the Mandela 67 Minutes campaign courtesy of the City of Ekurhuleni. As part of the of Mandela 67 Minutes initiatives, The Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Safety Cllr Frans Pheladi Mmoko gave the school a pleasant surprise when he handed out school shoes and sanitary pads. The MMC was joined by officials from his office, including Miss Ekurhuleni Annerdernive Brown and “The Future of Motion” TFM representative Pearlman Chiloane and Constable J. Masilela amongst others. Members of the local community structures and the general community attended this event where MMC Mmoko presented the learners with school shoes and sanitary pads from the benevolent companies from Olifantsfontein namely, TFM and Dream Infinity.

AFCKO Holiday Program builds youth on social values!

The African Full-Contact Karate Organization (AFCKO) took 65 students from various Dojo (Karate gyms) from Thokoza, Tembisa, Hammanskraal and Zakhariya Park on a Holiday program from June 25 until July 5.

The aim of this retreat was to encourage the youth to stay away from substance abuse, discouraging the youth from participating in protests that end in destruction of property. Other objectives include encouraging youngsters to take a strong stand in woman and child abuse in their communities.

“The holiday program is much welcomed by many parents and community leaders because during the holidays, many children running around the streets doing nothing.

If this kind of initiative can be supported our youth will have something to do,” said Shihan Sibisi from AFCKO. Sibisi encourages all communitybased organizations, from sports associations of codes and the performance arts to organize holiday programs for the youth.

“The only way to keep the youth

busy is to create more activities around our community this will help us in our community,” he explains.

The AFCKO holiday program has been designed for physical training, capacity training and team building. Sensei Mabati Phillimon from Zakhariya Park Dojo took the liberty of morning class roadwork and physical training.

Sensei Mkhombiseni from AbramHlophe Dojo taught the young karate kids about life skill and leadership. Mkhombiseni is part of the Love-Life Programme in the community.

“Sensei Bongani Mkwanazi managed to teach the students selfdefense-skills, as he was graded his first black belt recently in Cape Town,” confirmed Shihan Sibisi.

The Holiday program was made possible by the sponsorship of local business around Katlehong. “Thank you to X-Ray Phadima, Dexter Hyper Meat, Dr Sizani, Phadima Pharmacy, Dr Moreki, Sempai Velly for their assistance,”said Sibisi.

Retail giant, SPAR has confirmed that it will reward the SPARProteas team with R1.2 million to be shared among the players in appreciation of their top four finish at the Netball World Cup. Meanwhile, Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts and Culture has urged sponsors to keep their word and reward the SA Netball Team for its stellar performance at the World Cup. The Chairperson of the committee, Ms Beauty Dlulane, said the performances women teams put on a global stage are indication that SA is a great sporting nation.
