Jabs for 35-49 expected to start in August!
South Africa’s COVID-19 vaccination programme is next month expected to gain further momentum, with those aged between 35 and 49 years, set to be vaccinated. While registrations will begin on 15 July, government will begin inoculating this group on 1 August. This was on Friday (July 9) revealed by Acting Health Minister, Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane, during a media briefing. The briefing was held amid a sustained rise in infections, hospitalisations and related deaths in the past seven days. Healthcare workers were the first to be vaccinated in March under the Johnson & Johnson Sisonke programme. A month later, government began administering vaccines in the over 60 population. Earlier this month, over 500 000 basic education workers began receiving their doses. Last week, the programme began focusing on those aged 50 and above. Personnel in the security sector this week started being vaccinated. Overall, Kubayi-Ngubane said government’s vaccination programme has made significant strides. “We have learned lessons from when we started, and we continue to improve our systems as we work and continue moving forward,” she said. Last week, the programme received a shot in the arm when the South African Health Products Authority (SAHPRA) granted approval for the use of the Sinovac vaccine. “The approval came at a time when the demand for vaccines was [increasing]. “More people are yearning to get vaccinated. [This] will boost the vaccine supply for the country’s vaccination rollout programme Sinovac is in addition to the Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines already utilised in the country. Kubayi-Ngubane said while indications are that the number of cases in Gauteng have peaked and are now declining, the province remains the country’s epicentre. “We should never let our guards down and think that [it is over]."

Police minister Bheki Cele put his best foot forward as the COVID-19 vaccination rollout for the South African Police Service (SAPS) kicked off at Soweto on Monday, July 5. About 108 registered vaccination sites across the country have been made for officers to get their jabs. The national vaccine rollout is currently in place with citizens over the age of 50 urged to register and vaccinate. Soon, people aged between 35 and 49 will be allowed to register on the Electronic Vaccination Data System (EVDS).

In such conditions, staying warm and safe can be a challenging factor. This can bring sub-zero temperatures leading to which might freeze water from the taps, bursting water pipeline systems. Strong winds can blow roof off and entire structures away. Power failures are rife in winter owing to the high demand of electricity by people in their quest to keep warm. The absence of electricity might lead to the usage of alternative Africans as quickly as possible. MAPEPEZA QUICK FACTS: Nelson Mandela has six different names
At birth, he was Rolihlahla Mandela. On his first day of school, his teacher gave him the name Nelson, following the custom back in the 1920s to give all children English names as English colonials ‘couldn’t’ pronounce African names. When he was 16 he was given the name of Dalibhunga (‘creator or founder of the council’) during a traditional rites of passage ceremony. South Africans commonly call him Madiba, which is the name of the Thembu clan to which he belongs, or simply Tata or Khulu, the Xhosa words for ‘father’ and ‘grandfather’.

Mzansi becomes Africa’s first vaccine manufacturing hub! President Cyril Ramaphosa has recently hailed the move as a landmark initiative. The President believes that this will see huge advancement in the international effort to build vaccine development and manufacturing capacity that will put Africa on a path to self-determination. “South Africa welcomes the opportunity to host a vaccine technology transfer hub and to build on the capacity and expertise that already exists on the continent to contribute to this effort.” The technology transfer hub will pave a way for African companies to begin manufacturing mRNA vaccines. Messenger RNA, or mRNA technology, instructs cells to make a protein that generates an immune response in the body, producing antibodies that protect against disease. The mRNA is a key ingredient in the Pfizer/ BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines used by governments worldwide. The WHO and partners will rope in the production expertise, quality control, and necessary license to a single entity to facilitate a broad and rapid technology transfer to multiple recipients. WHO Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom
“COVID-19 has highlighted the importance of local production to address health emergencies, strengthen regional health security and expand sustainable access to health products.” WHO will work with a South African consortium involving Biovac, which will act as developer, while Afrigen will act as the manufacturer of mRNA vaccines. Meanwhile, a network of universities will offer academic support and Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will provide technical and regional support. President Ramaphosa believes that the ability to manufacture vaccines, medicine, and other health-related commodities will change the face of Africa.
spotlight on the unequal access to lifesaving vaccines. “Countries of the north, with more developed economies now have vaccinated about 50% of their citizens and having lesser hospitalisation, while countries in the developing world are still struggling to access vaccines.” He also called on an end to vaccine nationalism, as access to vaccines is inequitable. “It’s not fair that some people because they come from rich countries, their lives are worth much more than lives in poor countries.” Meanwhile, he said government was still determined to work towards the proposal put together by India and South Africa for the waiver of Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS), as Africa sees a rise in COVID-19 infections.
“This initiative and others will change the narrative of an Africa that is a centre of disease and poor development. We will create a narrative that celebrates our successes in reducing the burden of disease in advancing self-reliance and also advancing sustainable development.”
At home, President Ramaphosa told the delegates that the country is in the midst of the third wave of infections, more severe than the previous one.
According to the First Citizen, South Africa intends to work with the rest of the African countries to enhance regional trade and invest in science and innovation.
He said he believes that this hub was a firm foundation for the achievement of security for the world’s most vulnerable.
Vaccine nationalism The President took the chance to shine the

Understanding water safety in and near home! and waving of hands that we may all imagine it to be. It IS quick and silent!
Supervise your children!
By Slindile Mthethwa
S
ince schools are closed we expect more and more people especially children to have outings in and around water when children are at home water is the first thing that can be fun for them to play with but it can also be deadly. Drownings take place quickly and silently! At Sea Rescue, we aim to reduce the number of drownings in South Africa by effective education and prevention strategies. The close of 350 children who die by drowning each year is of huge concern. Most drowning of children under five years of age are at or near their home to reduce this worrying number of drownings, each of us can play our part. Firstly, know what drowning looks like. It is not the obvious screaming
When your children are in the sea or swimming pool, hold the hand of non-swimmers or be within arm’s length. Teach your child to swim; but remember that supervision is still necessary. In the home - make water safety a family priority. In areas where water is stored in ponds, basins or buckets, ensure that these are out of the reach of children or sealed. Bath or washing water should be emptied soon after it has been used. Be vigilant and aware that a child can drown in only a few centimetres of water. Around dams and rivers- remember that rocks may be slippery, the depth of the water may be uncertain and submerged items like stones, bottles or tree stumps may not always be visible. Crossing a river in flood compounds the problem, as the water moves with greater force and tends to be dirtier. You can also very easily lose your footing and be carried away.
Always remember:
• Children should be supervised
when swimming or bathing • Never swim alone, even as an adult • Don’t drink Alcohol and Swim Call 112 or 10177 for help in emergencies • Learn how to do bystander CPR – this could keep some-one alive while you wait for professional help.
Our team of 21 water safety instructors are available to do online or classroom-based teaching for schools and other
community groups. The lessons are age appropriate and include: Having a PLAN when you go swimming, how to spot hazards, safe places to swim at the beach, Rip currents, peer rescue and the use of PRB’s and Hands On CPR. Should you wish to have a free lesson that covers the length of one school period then you may contact Slindile Mthethwa on 0603045232 or email fortunate@searescue.org.za

WINNER OF 2019 GAUTENG SPORTS AWARDS: Community Media of The Year
Banyana Banyana star R.I.P to boxing legend joins Spanish greats! Lehlogonolo Ledwaba!
Banyana Banyana sensation striker Thembi Kgatlana has moved to Atletico Madrid Fememino from Eibar on a massive 3-year deal. Kgatlana spent one year with Eibar where she proved a big hit.
The 25-year old star has been playing in big leagues around the world and is determined to put South African women’s football on the international map. Her latest move to Atletico Madrid is another addition to her ever growing stature. The 2018 Africa Women’s Footballer of the Year, has now played for Spanish side Eibar, Portuguese champions SL Benfica, Houston Dash and Beijing BG Phoenix. “She had a fantastic season at Eibar but I am super excited
and looking forward to the next stage of Thembi’s growth,” said Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis.
“She knows exactly what her next steps are to make her one of the best players around the world,” added Ellis. The Banyana Banyana coach said the good thing with Kgatlana’s latest move was that she would be playing with other African stars. “She has joined a top team and will be playing alongside Rasheedat (Nigeria) and Ajara (Cameroon) which will make for an exciting strike force in trying to bring back the glory to the club whose men’s team has just won the league and hopefully they can follow that success in the next season. We are super proud and may God continue to elevate her,” said Ellis.
Government has joined South Africans and the boxing fraternity in paying their last respects to the late boxing legend and community builder, Lehlogonolo Ledwaba.
to boxing as trainer and manager, after his retirement in 2006. In paying tribute to Lehlogonolo, Sports Minister Mthethwa said:
Also popularly known as “Hands of Stone”, Ledwaba passed away on Friday (July 2) reportedly due to COVID-19 complications.
“On behalf of the Department, I wish to join the nation, the boxing fraternity and the Ledwaba family in mourning the untimely death of yet another role model in South African Sport”.
Born on 27 July 1971, Ledwaba started his professional boxing career back in 1990 in Eldorado Park.
We will remember Lehlogonolo as one of those heroes who selflessly shared their talent with the rest of the nation.
Lehlogonolo was an accomplished professional boxer, who became IBF World Super Bantamweight Champion, when he dethroned John Michael Johnson in 1999.
City of Johannesburg’s Member of the Mayoral Council for Community Development, Margret Arnolds also extended her heartfelt condolences to the Ledwaba family.
He surrendered his title in 2001 to the highly regarded Hall of Fame, Manny Pacquiao, having defended it five times.
“Ledwaba often trained at Borolo Butt Hut, one of the City’s facilities in Soweto. His achievements inspired throngs of disadvantaged youth to take up boxing as a professional sport. The sporting fraternity still had so much to learn from the likes of Ledwaba,” she said. MMC Arnolds also said Ledwaba’s passing is a great loss considering that he was due to celebrate his 50th birthday later this month.
Those who knew Lehlogonolo remember him as a modest and humble father and husband, who made his services available Lesedi Local Municipality’s Executive Mayor Cllr Mluleki Nkosi (right) was in Jameson Park Sports ground to recieve a jungle gym sponsored by Rand water through their corporate social investment programme for the community of Jameson park. I drove it on N1 going to Vanderbeilpark, the car was performing well even passed some trucks on the way, but there is no cruise control and the seats become numbing due to driving long time without stopping. I was averaging 8.4 liters for 100 km/h. it’s a good car for everyday use and long drives as well due to lockdown restrictions, I couldn’t do long drives with my family as we normally drive from Vereeniging to Mpumalanga. Overall, I really enjoyed my time with The Ford Eco Sport Black. Price Ford Eco Sport Black 1.5 6AT will cost you about R336 900.
