News Briefs President fires Police Commissioner Sithole

President Cyril Ramaphosa has, by mutual agreement, terminated the employment contract of the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) General Khehla Sitole with effect from 31 March 2022. President Ramaphosa and General Sitole have agreed that the early termination of the Commissioner’s contract is in the best interests of the country. The time until General Sitole’s departure will enable a proper handover of various tasks, including all ongoing investigations, to one of the senior members of the team at the SAPS that had been assisting General Sitole. President Ramaphosa said: “I am grateful to General Sitole for the constructive discussions we have had over the termination of his position as National Commissioner. I wish to convey my appreciation to General Sitole for his service to the nation over many years in the SAPS. I wish him the best in his future endeavours.” The National Commissioner was accused by the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, of conspiring with leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters Julius Malema in a secret meeting. However, according to General Sithole, the meeting was not a secret and it was regarding the party leader’s security issues. An announcement will be made in due course on filling the position of SAPS National Commissioner following General Sitole’s departure.

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has urged consumers in possession of Similac Alimentum 400G infant formula to immediately discontinue use of the product, and return it to the point of sale for a full refund. Acting Commissioner Thezi Mabuza says the supplier informed the Commission of the precautionary recall of Similac Alimentum in South Africa.

“The manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories-Nutrition, informed the Commission of a voluntary recall following a global recall, as announced by the supplier. We understand that this product is manufactured at their plant in Sturgin, MI, in the United States of America, and was imported to South Africa and other countries. “The supplier confirmed that the recall was prompted by consumers who reported that their infants presented some symptoms after

ingesting the formula in the USA,” Mabuza said.

According to Abbott Laboratories, only four cases were reported in the USA. The company said, however, that the presence of Cronobacter and Salmonella in the infant formula is a cause for concern. “As the Commission, we want to emphasize that while there are no cases reported in South Africa as yet, we urge consumers who might have bought this product not to feed their infants but to immediately return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.

“We therefore encourage parents who have concerns that they might have fed their infants the product in question to seek medical attention. The Consumer Protection Act (CPA)

Ekurhuleni on high alert in case of Typhoid Outbreak!

The City of Ekurhuleni is on high alert for cases of enteric fever, commonly known as typhoid fever.

However, the Department of Water and Sanitation has urged municipalities to conduct drinking water quality tests amid reports of typhoid fever.

This follows the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) announcing the outbreak of enteric fever in the Western Cape and North West provinces.

“The city urges residents experiencing any of the

listed symptoms above to present themselves to their nearest clinic or health facility for assessment, diagnosis and treatment. “The city also calls for calm as there is no need for panic,” said the City of Ekurhuleni.

However, there have been no identified cases of typhoid fever in the City of Ekurhuleni to date. As a precautionary measure, the city’s environmental health practitioners are on stand-by to attend to any suspected cases of enteric fever. “Should a suspected case be identified, our practitioners will be dispatched immediately to the identified patient and conduct an assessment of the patient and possible sources of exposure,” the City of Ekurhuleni said in a statement. As stated by the NICD recently, there is no evidence that recent cases of enteric fever are linked to contaminated municipal water in any part of the country, and there is no evidence that the bacteria causing enteric fever have recently been identified in municipal water sources anywhere in the country.

Gauteng SOPA focuses on economic recovery for the next two years! "After so much death and destruction of lives and livelihoods, it is time to rebuild and do so with the greatest sense of urgency, single-mindedness and coordination demonstrated during our emergency response to COVID-19." The economic hub of South Africa has felt the impact of COVID-19, lockdowns and the unrest than any other province in South Africa. This prompted the Gauteng Premier David Makhura (pitctured)to dedicate this year’s State Of the Province Address to recovery and rebuilding.

projects across all regions," said the Premier.

to be turned into sectoral and localised social compacts,” he said.

The provincial government has spent over R10 Billion towards women and youth-owned enterprises thus far. This coupled with the R500 million that has been set aside to support businesses that were negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Reactions to SOPA

Gauteng plans to prioritize completing unfinished infrastructure projects and building more as part of the overall economic recovery plan. "Our determination to build the economy and infrastructure will be the central and driving tenet of this sixth administration. The focus will entail the completion of incomplete projects and the acceleration of the completion of new infrastructure

The Democratic Alliance (official opposition) delivered their own version of the State of the Province Address. Leader of the party’s provincial caucus, Solly Msimanga says that Premier Makhura has failed to deliver on most of his promises from previous years. “Like all the promises that he has made, only a handful have materialized. Premier Makhura you are only left with two SOPAs, then you are out. The old saying goes that ‘a fish rots from the head’,” said Msimanga.

"We have learned many lessons in our battle with the COVID-19 pandemic. These lessons include mobilization of social compacting, promptly and decisively acting against crime and corruption in government and society as well as inter-departmental and intergovernmental cooperation to avoid government working in silos,” he said. Addressing the people of Gauteng from Brixton Multipurpose Hall in Johannesburg, Premier Makhura outlined the government’s plans to create infrastructure and opportunities that will be seen in the next two years.

On the other side of the political spectrum, the South African Communist Party (SACP) in Gauteng welcomed the Premier’s speech, saying they look forward to the announced multiple interventions to fast track the economic recovery brought to bear by the COVID-19 pandemic. Another key sector in the economy that the province fully supports is the Cannabis industry. Speaking at the Provincial Legislature sitting, Makhura said a dedicated unit to address regulatory and licensing issues, attract investment, and facilitate black participation will be created. "We will give further feedback on the work being done in other sectors, such as the creative and cultural industries, freight and logistics, finance, and construction and infrastructure once this work is concluded by the relevant MECs and industry leaders and is ready

“We welcome the 2022 SOPA as it outlined, in practical terms, that the Gauteng Provincial Government is taking significant strides, working with its social partners to bring the economy back on track following the devastation effects of lockdowns which resulted in the loss of lives and livelihoods. We are particularly pleased with the progress that has been made in building Special Economic Zones in the five development corridors of the province. These strides will go a long way in alleviating joblessness, especially among the working class who are concentrated in the townships,” said the SACP.

New board of Gauteng Gambling Board to restore governance! In efforts to restore the image and governance of the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB), MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture and Rural Development, Parks Tau has announced the appointment of new members of its executive board.

Advocate Anthea Platt SC has been appointed as chairperson of the board and businessman Timothy Sukazi (owner of football club T.S Galaxy) as the deputy chairperson. The appointment of the new board is part of measures undertaken by MEC Tau to strengthen governance and management at the provincial regulatory body. MEC Tau has directed the new board to resolve matters of governance that would include the appointment of the executive management. “The GGB, which is responsible for regulating the gambling industry in the province, is critical to Gauteng’s economy. Since inception the GGB has collected taxes well over R14 billion on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government. Despite the difficult domestic and global economic environment due to the Covid-19 pandemic over the past two years, the contribution of the GGB continues to be a significant source of revenue to the provincial fiscus. The new board was appointed in

terms of the Gauteng Gambling Board Act No.4 of 1996, and consists of the following:
