Metro cops help sick, homeless man get relief!
True to their commitment of making the City of Johannesburg safer for all, a team of JMPD officers extended a helping hand to an elderly man who had found shelter under the M1 Highway bridge. The officers did not only move the homeless man to a place of safety, but they also passed a hat around to financially contribute to his upkeep during his stay at one of the City’s shelters. Earlier this month, Inspector Marius Boolsen and his team received a complaint to remove six men who had erected illegal structures under the M2 South bridge bend due to safety concerns. According to Boolsen, on arrival, the officers found six men under the bridge – five of whom fled on seeing the police, leaving their elderly companion behind. The man, who was on crutches, told the officers he had recently been discharged from hospital and he suffers from asthma. “He said he was from Cape Town and that he had come from hospital the previous day. He had his pump with him and could evidently not walk. When he explained that he was extremely tired and needed to rest, I asked if it would be possible to help him in any way. I did not hesitate to get him assisted,” said Insp Boolsen. He immediately consulted his supe-
rior, Superintendent Elias Phasha, and it was agreed that the officers would try to get the man into a Joburg municipality-owned shelter. All the nine officers who were part of the operation also decided that they would contribute money to help sustain the old man during his stay at the shelter. “He was concerned that he could not afford to go into a shelter, but we told him not to worry and assured him that we were more than willing to assist him with that,” said Insp Boolsen. Officers Rose Sithole and Tumelo Makae drove to three different shelters in search of a placement for the elderly man. They had to plead for his placement at the third shelter after he could not be accommodated at the first two. Despite them arriving after the permitted times of new arrivals, the employees at the shelter in Eloff Street Ext in Kenilworth heeded the officers’ pleas to grant him space,
especially due to his health condition. Inspector Boolsen said coming across such cases was heartwrenching and it always prompts officers to “go the extra mile” in executing their duties. “It is painful, but we really do have empathy for people. Wherever it is possible, when you come across such cases, you must be sensitive. I believe that there are places we go where God uses us on a daily basis to reach out to people and walk an extra mile so that we can really try to make a difference,” he said. Boolsen expressed his appreciation to all who were involved in helping the elderly man, especially Supt Phasha for his guidance and Inspector Molly Chuene as well as officers Sithole and Makae for going above and beyond the call of duty. A few weeks earlier, JMPD officers helped a mother deliver a healthy and bouncing baby at the Bree Street taxi rank.

City calls for local farmers to bid for land! The land release programme is set to take off as the City of Ekurhuleni invite proposals from interested organisations to conduct agricultural activities on parcels of Council owned land in different towns. The programme will see successful bidders being awarded municipal farms by way of lease for a period of nine years eleven months. The Member of Mayoral Committee for Finance and Economic Development Cllr Nkosindiphile Xhakaza said the City has opened the bidding process in an attempt to establish a permanent urban and near urban agricultural base to ensure a local food source for the local economy. “We intend to provide opportunities for community economic development by creating jobs and meaningful work for the local community. “We also want to reduce the volume of agricultural imports by providing locally grown, produced and sold foodstuffs, thus reducing greenhouse gas emissions related to food transportation thus helping to reduce the impacts of climate change. He said as the City we want to al-
leviate poverty and hunger in communities by promoting social equity and food security in these communities by providing opportunities for increased accessibility to fresh and healthy produce.
“We are going to partner with organizations to pilot and implement sustainable agricultural practices and programmes on municipal farms. “We are going to partner with individuals and organizations to develop innovative educational programming that focuses on themes on sustainable urban agriculture including sustainable farming and food security practices, said Xhakaza. “We have different categories of farms varying in size from social farms 1 which are less than 5 hectares, social farms 2 which are more than 5 hectares but less than 10 hectares, small scale farms 10-30 hectares, developmental commercial farms 30-100 hectares and established commercial farms that are more than 100 hectares.

This follows the plight of currently registered university students that were not able to apply for funding during the funding application window due to various reasons.
“The initiative is aimed at alleviating the financial burden of eligible and deserving students, but also minimising the burden of student debt.
Minister Nzimande announced that the NSFAS board has resolved to grant a once-off application window period for the students to apply. “All universities are required to send their exhaustive list by no later than 17 August 2021 to be considered for this once-off opportunity. The City of Ekurhuleni will also be hosting stakeholder engagement sessions to educate interested bidders on the City’s Agriculture Development Strategy and provide more information and guidelines on the Supply Chain Management process flow to be used when submitting proposals/bids during Phase 2 of the Programme. Gauteng hard at work to vaccinate the masses!
The Gauteng Provincial Government has not spared a day in accelerating the COVID-19 vaccination campaign. The Premier, David Makhura along with Health MEC Dr. Nomathemba Mokgethi have visited communities across the province accompanied by local political leaders.
MMC Eunice Mgcina when they visited the Lenasia South Hospital Vaccination Site and Lawley Fire Station (Pop-up site).
In many areas, the Gauteng government has set up drive through and mobile (pop-up) vaccination sites for eligible persons to vaccinate. The expansion of vaccination sites are meant to reach people where they live and possibly, leave no resident behind. Premier Makhura says that in Gauteng wants to reach over 100,000 vaccinations daily. “So far, there’s around 2.5 million vaccination done in Gauteng and a million of them are fully vaccinated. We are very grateful for those who have taken responsible action in protecting themselves and their families,” he said.

In Joburg, Makhura along with Mayor Mathongo engage with residents in Lenasia, south of the City. Speaking to the media at the Lawley pop-up site, Makhura has commended the City of Joburg in reaching over one million vaccinations. “We still have a long way to go as we have over 4.2 million adults in Johannesburg. Relative to the rest of the province, over 53% of residents over 60 years are fully vaccinated in the City,” he explained. The Premier also indicated that the reason behind the innovative pop-up sites are meant to address the low turnout of citizens coming to vaccinate, especially in high density areas.
Tat’ uVuyo Ngalonkulu (59) was the first person to recieve his jab at the newly opened TRANSVACO clinic which administers COVID-19 vaccinations. In the City of Ekurhuleni, the Premier led the launch of the TRANSVACO vaccination train at the Springs Railway station along with Roads & Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo and mayor Mzwandile Masina. The locomotive site is meant to encourage both minibus taxi operators and commuters in the Springs area to register and and take their vaccination on site. Residents across Soweto have responded positively to the Bara Taxi Rank Pop-up Vaccination site. Commuters and taxi drivers came out in numbers to get their jabs. The newly elected executive mayor of Joburg, Golidee Matongo joined the Premier in evaluating sites across the City. The pair was joined by MMC Loyiso Masuku and
Employer-based vaccination in the West Rand have also been established in partnership with companies. The Mponeng Vaccination Site at the Harmony Gold Mine. The site has vaccinated over 6000 employees since its opening in June.
The capital city, Tshwane set up a drive through vaccination sites at the Zwartkops Raceway on the R55 route. Motorists in the area were encouraged to utilize this quick way of getting the jab. To reach the far-flung farming communities in Gauteng, the provincial government has set up vaccination sites in places like Devon in the Lesedi Local Municipality. PK Farming & enterprises abattoir in Devon has a dedicated site for farm workers around the area are coming in numbers to receive inoculation. Makhura was joined by Sedibeng District Mayor Lerato Maloka, Lesedi Municipality Mayor Mluleki Nkosi and local councillors (front page picture). The Premier has commended women for leading the vaccination programme. “Women are responding very well in Gauteng. We are at 57% at the moment, and 43% vaccinated men. In some regions, we got real problems because men are not coming out. We must commend women, as it is Womens Month, as they are really taking action in making people safe,” said Makhura. The province has also explained that it will continue to expand its vaccination sites as the registration of adults between 18 and 34 years old have been opened.

Association calls for one woman, one hectare! Seven years ago, the Rural Womens Assembly launched the ‘One Woman, One Hectare’ campaign. This initiative was meant to speak for the rights to land and water so women can grow their own food, thereby sustaining their families. Since then, many women across the country have benefited from the programme. But this is not enough. Millions of South Africans are still living in poverty, especially in rural communities. Access to basic services, like water and electricity, make the odds even harder for rural women. The non-profit organization has expressed its slogan using various communication platforms. They have done radio interviews and most recently, the Rural Women’s Assembly hanged a banner on the N1 Bridge, pictured above. During the campaign on the freeway on August 12, the group also protested against Genderbased Violence and Femicide (the senseless killing of women and girls). “Rural Women’s Assembly believes that if women have access to land, it will create more opportunities for families to grow their own food and be able to sell to local markets. This will in turn help the growth of the economy,” said Madinny Lebeko from the organization.
Established in 2010, the Rural Women’s Assembly represents women from various states from Southern Africa (SADC) including Namibia, Mozambique, Malawi and Madagascar. The organization has a vast network of women in eight countries which combine various social movements, assemblies, grassroots chapters and unions together under one cause. The women-only organization strongly advocates for women empowerment, especially those who live in rural areas. The group is non-political, but represents the cause for women’s rights across all fronts.
pecially in rural areas. “Land would give women the economic freedom to escape Gender-based Violence due to economic dependence on their predators,” explained Lebeko. Interested women who would like to join must reside in a small town/township, rural or farm community. For more information, visit the Rural Women’s Assembly - RWAG Facebook page or contact the Gauteng provincial representative, Wendy on 079694845.
South Africa is currently finalizing legislation that will make it possible for land expropriation without compensation. This is meant to address the historical inequalities bought forth by colonization and apartheid over the decades. Since the dawn of democracy in 1994, about six million hectares of land have been redistributed. Unfortunately, the land that has been given back to South Africans has not been favourable to its women. According to the Rural Women’s Assembly, over 85% of commercial black-owned farms are in the hands of men. However, women dominate at 60% when it comes to small scale farms. This contrasts the fact that generally women are the primary caregivers in many households, es-

Meet the new force in local politics - SEFM The Socialist Economic Freedom Movement (SEFM) is a brand new political party which is set to make its impact in the upcoming local government elections.
The party was established in Ratanda township, as a political movement that aims to bring about positive change in the communities around the Sedibeng District through socialism.
said SEFM General-Secretary Teboho Hlanguza. With only a few months left until the local government elections begin, the IEC has submitted a court application to postpone the elections until February next year. This was after the commission hired former deputy chief justice Dikgang Moseneke’s to investigate the viability of having elections during this pandemic.
“Socialism is defined as the ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange by the working class. Socialism is the only practical solution which will assist in the construction of a society which is equal and productive, a nation which is free from racism and the exploitation of workers by capitalists,” outlines the party’s manifesto.
Despite that, the SEFM feels that the delay will help them gain the necessary support from eligible voters.
The SEFM was founded by Thulani Mashinini, Teboho ‘Pono’ Hlanguza and Bayanda ‘PastorBae’ Radebe and has just been officially registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
The party has its sights on attracting the youth and poor people living in the Lesedi area, targeting the wards by having a candidate for each one.
Speaking to Mapepeza, the party has declared that it will make its initial political impact in the Lesedi Local Municipality, east of Sedibeng. “Poor governance, corruption, load shedding, high levels of inequality etc. We have a fully detailed manifesto that represents what SEFM believes are the urgent and burning issues that the future local municipality around our vicinity should attend to. Our people are dying a slow death caused by poverty, unemployment and landlessness. We seek to address all those social injustices our people are faced with that reduces them to subhumans,”
people and supports the call for a free decolonised education. - More funding and grants in order to realize free higher education and make education compulsory from grade 8-12. - Support industrial development and labour-intensive growth in fields including agricultural production, agro-processing, mineral production etc. - Call for mobile patrol groups in communities, including undercover police to protect communities from crime - Promotes the implementation and distribution of the Basic Income Grant.
“As a newly formed movement, we welcome that view not only because of the pandemic but that will afford us enough time to work the ground because we are only 2 months old,” said Hlanguza.
“We are contesting all wards in Lesedi. A overwhelming majority of our candidates are tried and tested, young familiar faces that can clarify all contradictions who need no introduction around Lesedi and a bit of generational mix,” Hlanguza added. According to the party’s manifesto, these are some of their positions and propositions: - “Land is wealth” SEFM calls for land to be distributed to the rightful owners - Black Working Class are the major drive behind social and economic transformation. - Rejects the use of labour brokers and outsourcing of services. - Investment in the education and training of black
