News Briefs The Department of Health has reported that on Tuesday that 17 176 604 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered thus far.

According to the department, twenty-one percent of the country’s adult population is now fully vaccinated. Meanwhile, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), the country has exited the third wave according to the current definition. “The national seven-day moving average of daily case numbers, positivity rate and testing rate continue to decrease, with sustained decreases seen in all provinces,” the NICD explained. The Lesedi Local Municipality has reported that areas in Heidelberg and Ratanda experiencing power outages earlier this week are due to a fire near the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, which affected some cables that provide electricity. Taxi drivers attack Uber driver in Katlehong! Katlehong police were called to a scene where a group of men severely assaulted another man and tried to force him into their vehicle.

On arrival, the police officers found that members from Gauteng Provincial Traffic have already arrested a 56-year-old suspect who is currently linked to a certain taxi association and seized the association’s vehicle.

The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended the swift arrest of one of the alleged perpetrators.

It is reported that on Thursday, September 16, an e-hailing driver was collecting a client when he was chased by the association’s vehicle. He lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree. About four men forced him out of his vehicle and started assaulting him but while trying to force him into their vehicle, Gauteng Traffic police arrived on the scene and rescued him. Transport MEC condemns incident

Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo has condemned the attack on the driver. The MEC said “We have come a long way as a province in dealing with minibus taxi violence. This incident is an affront to the efforts of so many peace-loving people within the taxi industry and the people of Gauteng. These individuals should face the full might of the law”. The MEC added that the latest incident of violence should not be allowed to undermine efforts made in ending taxi violence. “I am appalled by the level of savagery and hate displayed by the individuals who perpetrated this act of violence. These acts are unacceptable and must be condemned. We pledge our solidarity with the victim and wish him a speedy recovery,” the MEC added.

Vaccine for teenagers approved!

The South African Health Products Authority (SAHPRA) has given the green light for children aged 12 and older to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

According to the local drug watchdog, the approval is in terms of Section 21 of the Medicines and Related Substance Act 101 of 1965, also known as the Medicine Act. “This was as a consequence of the review of updated safety and efficacy information submitted as conditions of Section 21 initially authorised on 16 March 2021,” SAHPRA said. In addition, the watchdog said, Section 21 of the Medicines Act is a mechanism that enables emergency use access and allows it to authorise the use of medicine, subject to certain conditions. “The regulatory decisions of SAHPRA do not translate into a procurement decision, as SAHPRA’s mandate is limited to safety, quality and efficacy of health products.” In March, SAHPRA has approved the Section 21 application for the Pfizer vaccine for adults. “Initially, we thought COVID-19 doesn’t affect children very much from the first wave but that has changed over time. We now know that the Delta variant, the burden on children was quite high, where they can suffer from long COVID,” he said. Meanwhile, he said the burden has shifted to children now that more adults are getting vaccinated and are protected. “We’ve seen outbreaks in South Africa in schools and this has limited the possibility of children catching up in terms of learning. I think, therefore, there’s a strong case to be made for children to be vaccinated, especially because schools are daily gatherings and social gatherings, and can contribute to reinfections in the households, as well as most from schools to households through these children.” Moshabela has also welcomed the launch of the main phase of a global COVID-19 vaccine study on children and teenagers, led by Chinese Coronavirus-vaccine maker, Sinovac Biotech.

The trials will be conducted on 2 000 children aged six months to 17 years, based on international data. According to reports, the trials will enrol 14 000 children from South Africa, Chile, the Philippines, Malaysia and Kenya. “I think SAHPRA should engage the public on the data that they have used to make this decision because it’s not something that originated in South Africa, and there’s a lot more effort on the side of SAHRPA to actually convince the South African public why they made that decision and how safe it is for the kids.” Moshabela believes that the country needs to show that the data is there and it is compelling. Appletiser recalled!

Beverage drinks giant, Coca-Cola has released an urgent message to consumers of the popular sparkling fruit drink, Appletiser, to return any unused products back to the store. In a statement, the global corporation said that the Apple and carbonated water drink presents a health risk and has decided to no longer to produce it. “The health and wellbeing of our consumers is our primary concern and we have taken a decision to withdraw all affected stock from the market nationwide, with immediate effect.  With our partners, Coca‑Cola Beverages South Africa and Coca‑Cola Peninsula Beverages, we are working with authorities to ensure all processes are followed as we continue our investigation to understand the cause of the problem,” said Coca-Cola in a statement. If anyone has purchased the Appletiser product from batches: BB 07NOV21, BB 30MAY22, BB 10JUN22, BB 18MAY22, BB 19MAY22, and BB 23MAY22. The batch numbers can be found on the top or bottom of the pack. R450 million post-unrest small business relief fund now open! A new fund has been recently announced will bring financial relief to support small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) recovering from the unrest which broke out in July this year. The National Empowerment Fund (NEF) and the Solidarity Fund’s Humanitarian Crisis Relief Fund (HCRF) call on businesses impacted by the riots to apply for the fund as soon as possible. The NEF and Solidarity Fund’s HCRF have established a R450 million SMME Support Programme, a first between the two organizations, which will support businesses that can demonstrate that they were negatively impacted by the riots and unrest in both provinces. The NEF has contributed R300 million into the programme, while the Solidarity Fund offered its R150 million to be used as grant funding. The unrests and riots affected several businesses across KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng, stopping economic activities and jobs. The financial support will be a blended loan and a grant offering. “Affected businesses will need to

show that they were not covered by insurance or that there is an insurance shortfall,” said the Chief Executive Officer of the NEF, Ms Philisiwe Mthethwa. Another requirement in the fund is that the applicant must also demonstrate that jobs lost will be restored or increased within 12 months of receiving the funding. The Solidarity Fund has invested in the Humanitarian Crisis Relief Fund (HCRF), which focuses on three key areas of support: emergency food provision; re-establishing critical delivery channels for chronic medications, and; small business recovery. “This intervention underscores the intent of the HCRF’s ability to respond with agility and speed to business recovery efforts in a meaningful way that will ultimately benefit community access to goods and services, and aid in the much-needed economic recovery in the affected areas,” says Mr Boris Kamstra, Head of the Solidarity Fund’s Humanitarian Crisis Relief Fund. Masetjaba Reservoir brings more water to Tsakane community! Gauteng Premier David Makhura alongside Ekurhuleni mayor, Mzwandile Masina recently visited the site of the newly built Masetjaba Reservoir in Tsakane, south of the city on September 21. The construction of the 15 ML Masetjaba Reservoir, 2 ML Tower and Pump Station is part of the Aqua Leap Asset Management programme that was initiated by the City two years ago. The main purpose of building additional water storage facilities is to increase the average water storage capacity of the City from 24 hours to 36 hours by June 2022. Altogether, 29 reservoirs are undergoing construction city-wide, and they are at different levels of development with some having undergone final stages of testing whilst others have been handed over. The site of construction for Masetjaba Reservoir and Tower was handed over to the contractor on December 2019 for construction.

Today, the construction of the reservoir is complete, whilst work on the water tower and pump station is at 78% and 74%, respectively. In addition, the reservoir will supply water to a new zone consisting of future developments and a small section of the existing network that is currently being supplied from the Zulu Water Tower. This new zone is located on the southern boundary of Brakpan, and the following future developments are envisaged within the zonal boundary: Tsakane 87, Tsakane 86a, Tsakane 86b, and Tsakane X (Portion to be supplied by Zulu Tower). The contract value on this site is at R113m and the overall construction progress is at 87%.

Community activist Kenny Tsotetsi dies!

A dedicated and popular community activist to the people of Ratanda has passed away. Kenny Tsotetsi died on Monday, September 27, after succumbing to a short illness.

He will be remembered by many residents of Ratanda and the whole Lesedi Municipality as a great force that served his community with distinction and an inspiration to young politicians and community activists.

Tsotetsi was an active member of the Ratanda Community Forum, which plays as a mediator in instances where the community needs organized groups to represent them. He has played a contributing role in ensuring people’s rights are taken care of and issues are resolved.

Kenny Joseph Tsotetsi was born in Grootevlei (in Dipaleseng) on the 22nd of January 1958. He started school at Grootevlei Primary School and later moved to Evaton to complete his high school in Jordan High School, where he matriculated. He furthered his tertiary education at Damelin College where he studied his Diploma in Human Resources.

As a former Councillor in the Lesedi Local Municipality, he was on the ground in attending to problems faced with issues ranging from service delivery, housing and jobs. Recently, he joined the newly formed party, Socialist Economic Freedom Movement (SEFM) where he was contesting as a PR councillor in the upcoming municipal elections. Before that, he started his political career with the African National Congress (ANC) where he was elected as councillor. He also joined other parties after his exit from public service, being a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the National Freedom Party (NFP).

Wage and pension deal for municpal workers!

Parties at the SA Bargaining Council on Wednesday, September 15, clinched a collective multi-three year salary and wage deal for local government, bringing to an end the local government 2021 wage negotiations.

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the employer body representing 257 municipalities in the country has been in protracted salary and wage negotiations with the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and Independent Municipal & Allied Trade Union (IMATU) since March 2021. The salary and wage negotiations have now concluded and a collective agreement covering

2021/2022 & 2023 was voted unanimously which has a package of elements. Foremost, in the package is a multi-three year wage deal, pension fund reforms, a financial relief mechanism for municipalities in financial distress and for the terms of the agreement to be revisited should unforeseen negative economic circumstances arise in future during the period of the agreement. The collective agreement, in respect of this current financial year, stipulates that all municipal employees shall receive an increase of three and a half percent (3.5%) with effect from 1 July 2021, a period in which the remuneration of municipal employees is adjusted every year,

and a once-off non-pensionable cash allowance as follows:

• Municipal Employees earning a basic salary of R 12 500 or less as at 1 July 2021, shall receive an amount of R 4000.00. • Municipal Employees earning a basic salary of R 12 501 or more as at 1 July 2021, shall receive an amount of R 3000.00. The new collective agreement represents a compromise for all the Parties and on the other hand, it gives municipalities who are in financial distress a lifeline and a breathing room until 2023. It also means that should municipalities experience even

more difficulties going forward, they will have an opportunity to revisit the terms of the agreement. The agreement also imposes a zero increase in some benefits, such as home owner’s allowance and medical aid. The work on the pension restructuring will commence which will see several reforms in the body form. According to SALGA, reaching the deal was no easy feat as negotiators in the bargaining council deadlocked several times leading to a Conciliator to be brought in after a Facilitator’s Proposal in August 2021 also failed to conclude the negotiations.

Editorial: Psalmist Lethabo Rams has a This is not our voice that lifts up the spirit! ﬁrst Pandemic Looking back over a couple of decades ago, the world has discovered a new illness that is causing mass deaths and with no chance of ever getting a cure. We saw political leaders from around the world gather to discuss and forge direction for their respective countries in efforts to fight this illness. By the early 2000s, the illness has reached many African rural communities, especially in South Africa. Thousands started getting sick and dying shortly after - perceived to many locals as a curse that has fallen on mankind with no solution in sight.

However, it didn’t. Instead we evolved. As a human race, we realized that going forward, we had to protect ourselves. So in response, whenever we are confronted by a life-threatening illness, we look no further than our pharmaceutical ‘heroes’ that first ‘saved’ us in the past. We ask for help from the governments that have gone all out in making sure we live with this for as long as humanity exists. The cure? That is not necessary. We have a way to treat it and that’s okay. Everything is back to normal, so they say. A new way of doing things emerged and now is a necessity to keep ourselves protected from this pandemic through medication and treatment provided by our government in partnership with pharmaceutical companies. His first single, Ngingaphezu komnqobi, is available on major online streaming platforms like YouTube and Spotify.

The major highlights of his career include being nominated for an award and making his first appearance on television, singing on the popular show Dumisa.

His song, Ngingaphezu komnqobi (meaning I’m more than a conqueror), is a memorable tune that can easily reach churches across the country. Due to the popularity of his song, Rams printed T-shirts with the title which fans proudly wear and freely promote the track. Hailing from Duduza township, south of the City of Ekurhuleni, Lethabo Rams has shared his music with local churches and congregations.

We were all urged to be as educated as possible on this illness, as the more you know the less chances it may be a threat to you. We wore ribbons and sang songs, made a global holiday in remembrance. In a matter of a few years, the people of the world now live alongside those who are infected. The stigma that surrounded those who were labeled ‘positive’ was starting to fade away. It seemed, for a while, that things will eventually return back to normal.

“I see myself very far because all I think of is people's soul prosperity, Faith restoration, hope Restoration and also putting the spirit of believing in God especially to the youth,” he explained.

Rams has been a recording gospel artist for the past three years. He has released two songs since then.

A breakthrough came when pharmaceutical companies revealed that their scientists are closing in on a treatment for this illness, which prompted world leaders to consider this as a possible solution against rising deaths and infections. As the people waited, the pharmaceutical firms are negotiating deals.

Eventually, many developed countries got the treatment first. This was followed and funded by many states, especially in Africa. Funds started pouring in from all directions. Non-profit organizations aimed at helping the sick and ensuring equal access to treatment started to emerge. The birth of the ‘Treatment Action Campaigns’ and many others laid their foundation. These groups and ‘activists’ were well funded, no matter the size. All they had to do was ask and they received. Later, these movements made their way into our lives, urging us to be tested and treated if positive. Many sick and desperate people were helped and some are still alive because of this ground-breaking medicine.

Talented gospel singer Lethabowarona Ledwaba, popularly known as Psalmist Lethabo Rams, shared his journey recently with Mapepeza.

He has great plans for his career to reach new heights. Duduza is also home to the late award-winning gospel great, Vuyo Mokoena.

Apart from singing heavenly hymns, Lethabo spends his time playing soccer and playing musical instruments. Ledwaba has a great support structure behind his music journey. He has mentioned but a few of those who have supported him throughout. “I'd like to thank my family, my pastor, fellow classmates and fans for believing and supporting me. I'd also like to thank Reverend Manganye for making sure that I appear on TV. Ekurhuleni women in sport celebrated!

The Ekurhuleni Women in Sports Awards ceremony recently took place to honor the local sports women and administrators who have represented the City well. The gala dinner was hosted in the City of Ekurhuleni on Heritage Day, September 24. The awards are the brainchild of Futballing Girls Founder Moonira Ramathula, who after winning an award herself in 2017, decided to start women in sports awards at district level to recognise, celebrate and empower women in sport. The Futballing Girls Women in Sports Awards debuted in Ekurhuleni in September 2018, and have since been launched in all five districts in Gauteng, culminating in the Gauteng Women in Sports Awards.

Futballing Girls will soon be lunching women in sports awards in other provinces across the country as part of the organisations women empowerment initiative.

In her address, Moonira Ramathula said: “Ekurhuleni is always special for us because this is where it all began four years ago. As much as the pandemic has affected participation in sport, we still felt that we needed to continue with our awards, as recognition should not stop. What is so different and special about our awards is that we have Olympians, community builders, and grassroots athletes in one room. Lastly I would like to congratulate all the nominees and finalists for all their hard work in keeping girls and women in sport brand alive in communities.”

Emmasdal CYCC gets new gym equipment!

The Gauteng Department of Social Development recently donated brand new outdoor gym equipment to the Emmasdal Child Youth Care Centre (CYCC) in Heidelberg, Sedibeng District.

The handover was done by the Directorate of Institutions, one of the several that is run by the department. Emmasdal CYCC accommodates only girls, in need of care and protection. The capacity of the facility can cater for 31 and currently the centre has 21 children. Besides providing shelter and psychosocial support they also ensure that children are reintegrated back into their families where possible.

According to the Auxiliary Services Assistant Director, Clarisa Bennie, the equipment will help children to stay active.

Bennie added that these are children who have suffered various forms of violence, abuse, and neglect, and who are in need of care and protection, therefore, exercises will help them stay focussed, healthy and it will keep them active.
