Letter from the President Matthew Schulze, PGA Continuing to move forward! As children start to head back to school, I would first like to start off by congratulating Jimmy Flippen, PGA from Ringgold on winning this year’s MAPGA Professional Championship in a playoff over Josh Speight, PGA from Indian Creek. It is always a treat to watch the best players in our section perform at the highest level. For those of you that participated in this year’s event, hopefully you enjoyed the Family Picnic on Monday afternoon which had over 100 attendees. As the Board and Tournament Committee look to find more ways to increase participation and networking opportunities, we felt like this fun environment during our biggest Championship was a big success. Stay tuned for more events like this in the future. Please make sure to visit our new website at www.mapga.com. As the world continues to get more technologically advanced, the Board felt like now was the right time to update our website. This new asset will continue to evolve and showcase the MAPGA and our 1,100 PGA Professionals and Apprentices in the best possible light. Importantly, it is completely mobile- friendly and will adapt to whatever device you view it on. Please make sure to contact the section office if you are having any issues or questions about the new site. On a National PGA Level, the Officers have decided to support Rick Murphy, PGA for PGA National Secretary and have seconded his Nomination. Rick, from the Carolinas Section, has been our District 10 Director for the last few years and has shown an unparalleled passion and commitment to the PGA of America. We look forward to working with him as we near the November election. And lastly, the section officers and staff have already started to plan for 2017. If you have an idea or suggestion on something the MAPGA can be doing better to serve you, now is a great time to make those suggestions to either myself, the officers, or the staff. Our goal is always to think about how we can better serve our members and grow this game. Please do not hesitate to think outside the box and help all of us continue to get better. As a member driven organization it is always great to hear directly from the members on a variety of topics. Enjoy your Chapter Meetings and Tournaments and look forward to seeing everyone at some point this fall!

immy Flippen needed an eagle on the 15th and two pars on the 476 yd., par-4 18th hole to become the 2016 MAPGA Professional Championship at Kingsmill Resort.
Flippen, of Ringgold Golf Club, finished the third round with a score of 69 to force a playoff with Josh Speight, of Indian Creek Yacht and Country Club, before winning with a second par on 18 to clinch his first MAPGA Professional Championship. Flippen entered the clubhouse with a threeday total score of 6-under par. He began the tournament at Williamsburg Club with a tournament low-tying 67, then shot a 72 Tuesday at Kingsmill. “The first day I felt real sharp at Williamsburg Club,” Flippen said. “I managed to get a run of four straight birdies there and I was very excited to hold it together after that.” Speight had a strong round going, seven birdies and an eagle, before hitting a ball out of bounds on 18. The double-bogey gave Speight a 67 on the day and came just minutes after Flippen hit eagle on 15 to tie him. “Fifteen was very much a surprise,” Flippen said. “I hit it about six inches, pin-high, before it trickled in. It felt amazing. It gave me butterflies, but relaxed me after it.”

Flippen says he didn’t know his standing in the tournament until walking off the 18th green. His shot to 25 feet in the playoff, led to a two-putt par while Speight bogeyed. Speight led the field with 19 total birdies on the week, five more than Dennis Winter’s 14 and six more birdies than Champion Jimmy Flippen. Flippen and Speight were the only competitors to register a scoring average under 70. They both averaged 69.3 through the three rounds. Flippen earned his Champion status through strong par-5 play, He was 8-under on par-5’s. Of people with at least five tournaments this season, Flippen has the second-best scoring average on par 5’s with a 4.33. Twelve MAPGA players from the Section Championship qualified for the 2017 PGA Professional Championship. The full list of qualified players can be found below. Those 12 will join the four previously exempt MAPGA professionals of Josh Speight, David Hutsell, Wayne DeFrancesco and Rick Schuller at Sunriver Resort in Oregon, June 2017.

2016 MAPGA Women’s Championship Joanna Coe combined a bogey-free round and an eagle on the ninth hole at Raspberry Falls Golf Club to earn herself the distinction of 2016 MAPGA Women’s Champion. A total score of 66 on the day gave Coe the win by three strokes over Katie Murphy. She scored a birdie or better on all four par-5’s and was the only player to not card a bogey on a par-3. Coe is currently the assistant golf professional at Baltimore Country Club.
2016 MAPGA Senior Championship Ricky Touma needed a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole of the Rocky Gap Senior Championship to win and he sank it. Touma, of Burning Tree Club in Bethesda, scored an even-72 in the second round to card a tournament total 2-under, defeating first round leader Glenn McCloskey by one stroke. With only six birdies throughout the tournament, seven players scored more birdies than Touma, yet he finished atop the leaderboard. The victory was Touma’s third MAPGA tournament win of the year, finishing first in both the National Car Rental Spring Pro-Scratch and the Central Chapter Championship. The Professional
