Dear MAPGA Professionals, What an outstanding summer we have had thus far in the Section as we continue to prove why we are "Experts in the Game and Business of Golf." All Members and Associates should take pride in what the Section and its members has accomplished in these few short months as we continue to grow this great game. On a personal level, I just finished hosting the Maryland State Open. It is always great to work with our friends at the MSGA. I was very impressed with the talent of our MAPGA professionals. 15 out of the 18 professionals who made the cut were MAPGA professionals, and all represented well. Jimmy Grem, PGA from Eagle’s Nest CC, led the way by finishing in a four-way tie for 1st place, before succumbing on the 3rd hole of the playoff. I'd also like to congratulate our 2018 Chapter Champions, Jimmy Grem & Ricky Serrano (Sr) for the Northern Chapter, Jimmy Flippen Jr. and Carl Filipowicz (Sr) at the Southern Chapter, and Brendan McGrath/John O'Leary (tie) and Ricky Touma (Sr) at the Central Chapter for their winning performances. I'd also like to applaud our 13 MAPGA Professionals who qualified for and competed at the 51st Annual PGA Professional Championships at Bayonet and Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, California. Our Professionals continued to show off what a great playing Section we have in the Middle-Atlantic. Special kudos to Craig Callens, PGA for making it to a playoff for the top 20 before narrowly missing the PGA Championship cut. Additionally, we had many more successes of our Professionals competing in major PGA/LPGA events, which will be highlighted further in the magazine. If you have not registered for the MAPGA Professional, Assistant or Senior Championships, deadlines are quickly approaching. Be sure to locate the links presented in the magazine or visit the website at MAPGA.com for more information. Another important upcoming issue is the District 10 Election. The MAPGA Board of Directors has submitted three candidates to be considered for the District 10 Director election: John Madden, PGA; John Malinowski, PGA; and Matthew Schulze, PGA. All candidates have a letter of intent posted on the MAPGA website describing why they desire to serve as D-10 Director and listing their qualifications. Our Junior Golf Department has also made some big waves this summer as they hosted the Middle Atlantic Junior PGA Championship at The Piedmont Club. The competition was strong with young talent that showed great promise for the future of this great game. Details of the tournament are discussed later in this magazine. Furthermore, I'd like to note the Junior Golf Department has launched an Alumni Association for all former junior tour members. If you are a junior member or know of someone who is, please reach out to Tajma Brown via e-mail (tbrown@pgahq.com) for more information on how to connect with the Alumni Association. Finally, I’d like to officially invite you to participate in the Las Vegas Pro-Am that will take place in December 2018. This event is meant to provide a great experience for our Professionals and amateurs to have fun and compete on some of the most highly regarded courses Vegas has to offer. District-10 Election
The MAPGA will be holding elections for District 10 Director at the 2018 Section Fall Membership Meeting (Nov. 5th). District 10 of The PGA of America consists of the Carolinas Section, the Kentucky Section, and the Middle Atlantic Sections. The D-10 Director represents these three Sections as a voting member of the National PGA Board of Directors. This Board considers and votes on many topics each year during a minimum of four Board meetings. The Director is also expected to make presentations at numerous other functions and events to include Section Meetings, the bi-annual District 10 Conference, and more. The term is for three years and is preceded by a one year term as an “Incoming” Director. . The three candidates presented as a slate by the MAPGA Board of Directors (alpha order) are John Madden, PGA; John Malinowski, PGA; and Matthew Schulze, PGA. A District Director on The PGA of America’s National Board of Directors requires a substantial commitment with regard to time, effort and service to the Association. Please read their campaign letters.
John Madden, PGA
John Madden, PGA, has been a member of the Section for the past 28 years. His decision to run does not come without cause as he realizes the importance of giving back to the Association. Madden has had the honor of serving the Section in several capacities as a golf professional and active member, including the position of Section A-8 Director (1996 – 1998), Central Chapter Director-At-Large (2000 – 2001), Central Chapter Vice President (2002-2003), Central Chapter President (2004-2005), and for the past eight years Section Secretary, Vice President, President and Honorary President. In addition to these positions, Madden has served on many committees at the Chapter and Section-Level. He considers serving and giving back to the Section his passion.

John Malinowski, PGA
John Malinoski, PGA, wants to help shape the future of the PGA of America, by building off of his many years of service to the MAPGA. Malinoski has been a leader and advocate for the MAPGA Section since 2000 and has been eager to continue his service and passion on the National-Level. Malinoski was a President of the Section in 2014. He also held the titles section officer, chapter officer, national delegate and member of the Board of Directors. He has also spent time on the national PGA Education Committee while continuing to be an active member of the Section. By honing in on his past experiences in the golf industry, he believes he is uniquely qualified to represent each Member and Associate in and outside the Section.

Matthew Schulze, PGA
Matthew Schulze, PGA, has served the Section for over 15 years, before working in two other sections. Schulze has worked at multiple types of facilities, such as Private, Municipal and Resorts. He has a vast knowledge of how different PGA Professionals encounter various challenges and successes. Now as the Tournament Director for the LPGA’s Kingsmill Championship, he is in a nontraditional role as a PGA Professional, but has shown Volunteers, Sponsors and Patrons what a PGA Professional can do to grow the game of golf. If elected, to share his vision and ideas for the PGA of America, he hopes to bring three ideals that he would strongly campaign for at the National-Level: “Growing the Game at every facility and level of play”, “Ensuring the future of PGA Professionals”, and “Encourage every PGA Professional to play the game more.”

Assistant PGA Professional, Jimmy Grem Takes Northern Chapter Championship
C
ongratulations to 22-year-old, Jimmy Grem from Eagles Nest Country Club for winning the Nothern Chapter Championship, along with the Northern Chapter Assistants Championship at Talbot Country Club, June 4th. Grem shot 108 (E) after 27 holes. He had a solid start during the first round of the championship, carding 3-under-par through nine holes. He made an eagle on Hole No. 11 (Par 5), which led to a string of birdies through Hole No. 13. Grem only carded one bogey in his opening round. However, in the second round, Grem carded three The Professional
bogies and one double bogey (5-over-par) throughout his round. He was able to maintain even par by carding two birdies in his second round. This marked Grem’s second year competing in the championship and a source of retribution after finishing tied for second last year. Grem beat the field by a solid margin with second place finishers David Hutsell, PGA from Pine Ridge Golf Club and Brian Dix from University of Maryland Golf Course finishing 4-over-par through 27 holes. Winning the Senior Division of the Northern Chapter Championship, as well as being the only player shooting under par was Rick Serrano from
Cattail Creek Country Club. Serrano maintained a steady pace through the day, carding an even-par during his first round (two birdies and two bogies) and followed with a second round 71 (1-under par). He carded one eagle on his round on Par 5, Hole No. 7. In total, he had four birdies and one eagle on the day. A huge thanks to Professional Marc Kimminau for hosting the event for a second year.

Jimmy Flippen, Jr., Captures Southern Chapter Championship
C
ongrats to Jimmy Flippen, Jr., PGA Professional at Ringgold Golf Club for taking home the Dean Hurst Memorial Trophy and winning the Southern Chapter Championship Presented by Columbia Golf. Flippen birdied the second playoff hole to beat Kyle Fuller, PGA Assistant at Country Club of Virginia and Troy Thorne, PGA Head Professional at Hobbs Hole Golf Club. All three players shot 3-under-par, 67. The Championship was also a qualifier for the State Open of Virginia.

McGrath carded 69-35, with seven birdies on the day, whereas O’Leary carded 71-33, with eight birdies on the day.

Joanna Coe Finishes Lowest Scorer Among LPGA Teaching & Club Professionals at KPMG Women's PGA Championship
J
oanna Coe may have missed the cut during the second day of competition at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes Golf Course, but she maintained a positive outlook after completing her second career major championship. While this was not the result she wanted, Joanna was proud that she ended up being the lowest scorer among LPGA Teachers & PGA Professionals in the field. "Kemper Lakes was an impressive and demanding golf course [that] definitely tested all parts of my game," she said. "Thank you to the PGA of America, the LPGA, the fans, sponsors, volunteers, and especially my own support group. I can’t wait to compete in future LPGA Tour events!"

he PGA of America announced that Michael Abraham, PGA, Head Golf Professional at Hidden Valley Country Club in Salem, Virginia, has earned the title PGA Master Professional, the highest educational designation that can be obtained by a PGA Member. According to Abraham, working in the golf industry requires long days and hours, working on holidays and considerable time away from the family. "It is a passion for PGA Professionals,” said Abraham. “This accomplishment means so much to me because I’ve put my heart and soul into my profession and have always aspired to be the best PGA Member possible." Abraham hopes to take advantage of his newly earned title to help his fellow Professionals earn the acclaimed designation, while gaining a new found passion for the game.

he 51st Annual PGA Professional Championship, Presented by Club Car and OMEGA was hosted at Bayonet Black Horse, June 17-20. A total of 13 MAPGA Professionals traveled to Seaside, Calif. to compete for a piece of a half-million dollar purse and to have their name inscribed on the Walter Hagen Cup and earn entrance into the 2018 PGA Championship (August 9-12, at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, MO), 2019 PGA Cup and six PGA TOUR events over a 12-month period.
Of the 13 MAPGA competitors three made the cut for the final day of competition, Craig Callens, Jimmy Flippen, Jr. and Chip Sullven. However, Callens of Hermitage Country Club was the only Professional to reach the Top 20 (tied for 16th which qualified him for a chance to earn a spot at Bellerive Country Club.) He subsequentlt lost in a playoff for the final spot to Bellerive. Nevertheless, good job to everyone who qualified for the PGA Professional Championship. You made the Section proud. PAGE 17 Page 17

IT'S VEGAS BABY: MAPGA WILL HOST THREE-DAY LAS VEGAS PRO-AM Paiute Golf Resort ~ MGM Grand Resort December 2-6, 2018 The Middle Atlantic PGA invites you to experience an amazing golf, gambling and entertainment trip to Las Vegas! The PRO-AM will feature three (3) rounds of golf at the top-rated Paiute Golf Resort, while you stay four (4) nights in the heart of the Vegas Strip at MGM Grand Resort. Each team will consist of one (1) Middle Atlantic PGA Professional and three (3) amateurs to compete for cash and prizes.

Experience everything you love about Vegas right in the heart of the strip. All participants will have their own room for four nights (Sunday–Wednesday).
TRANSPORTATION
Coach buses will be provided to transport everybody to and from the golf course. Paiute Resort will store your clubs after each round at no cost. If you miss the scheduled departure, you are on your own to get to the course.

PRO-AM FORMAT The Pro-Am will be a 54-hole stroke play competition. Teams will record one low gross and one low net score per hole. The low gross and low net balls cannot be from the same player. Seniors (age 50 and older), Super Seniors (age 65 and older) and female participants will play from a separate set of tees (see next page for each round’s approximate yardages). Amateurs must have an active and verifiable USGA Handicap Index. Amateurs without a handicap will play at scratch. Amateurs will receive 90% of their course adjusted handicap with a maximum handicap of 18 strokes after the 90% adjustment. Each of the three rounds combined gross and net team scores will be totaled to determine our champion. Note: The Section Office reserves the right to make minor adjustments to the PRO-AM format prior to the event.

What is the APA? The MAPGA Assistant Professional Association (APA) is open to all assistants (A-6 and A-8) and apprentices in the Middle Atlantic Section. The goals of the Association are to provide education opportunities (specific to assistants’ career development), build community involvement and create an environment that

allows Assistants to establish new relationships and enhance their professional development. The APA also organizes a tournament program for its members. The tournament schedule consists of a variety of events and concludes with a Tour Championship and Independence Cup against the Philly PGA APA. MAPGA-APA APPRENTICE SCHOLARSHIPS Recognizing that the cost of the PGA Professional Golf Management (PGM) program is a major concern, the APA and the MAPGA have worked together to develop a scholarship program to
annually award those Assistance who finish at the top of each PGA PGM program level. The AHEAD MAPGA-APA Scholarships are awarded to the top four finishers at each level who are members of the APA and meet certain criteria: 1) Must be a registered member of the MAPGA Assistant Professional Association (APA) 2) Must participate in at least two of the following by December 31st: • APA Tournament (must complete the round and turn in a scorecard) • APA Education Seminar • APA Meeting Section or Chapter Membership Meeting Section specific education seminars • MAPGA Teaching Summit, those adjacent to Section meetings For more information contact Brian Dix, bdix1008@gmail.com.

MIDDLE ATLANTIC JUNIOR PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

emperatures and tee shots soared during the Middle Atlantic Junior PGA Championship hosted by The Piedmont Club in Haymarket, Virginia. Bailey Davis of White Plains, Maryland was the winner of the Girls 13-15 Division, as well as the Overall Girl’s winner. Davis finished with a two-day total of 142 (2-under-par). The winner of the Girl’s 16-18 Division was Danielle Suh from Herndon, Va,, carding a two-day total, 144 (Even Par) for the competition. David Luo was the winner of the Boys 13-15 Division as well as the Overall Boy’s winner. Luo came into the second day of competition two shots off the leader. At the conclusion of competition we had three competitors tied at the top of the leaderboard. Reeve Felner, David Lou and Carlo Pizzano (Boy's 16-18 Division Champion). They competed in one playoff hole resulting in Luo taking home the victory, and Pizzano emerging victorious over Felner one playoff hole later. Luo and Pizzano will represent the Middle Atlantic PGA at the National Boy’s Junior PGA Championship in Lexington, Kentucky. The Middle Atlantic Junior PGA Championship was a qualifier for both the National Junior PGA Championship in Kentucky as well as the MAPGA Capital Cup, August 17-19 at Kingsmill Resort. Congratulations to all National Junior PGA Championship qualifiers and good luck in the next level of competition.
