EDITORIAL Over the last month MAPIT has received a number of photographs which have been submitted for analysis. Unfortunately we were 2 to rationalise most of them. MAPIT offer able a FREE service for anyone wishing to have their photograph analysed. If you believe you have captured something odd, then please feel free to send it in to us. As expected, a number of UFO reports found their way to my desk on November 6th. Just like last year, most incidents were misidentified fire lanterns. I’m sure many of you in the UK caught sight of some fire lanterns which were released during the November 5th ‘Bonfire Night’ celebrations. MAPIT urge people to check thoroughly before reporting such incidents. To help you identify fire lanterns, there has been a purposely designed web page on the MAPIT website to help you. Please visit the UFO Misidentification page at: http://www.mapit.kk5.org
This months strange location, was Halton Library. Yes! the one in Runcorn. Initially a difficult place to find, however after circling it several times Dave and Steve finally managed to find a parking spot and headed off up the stairs to the library.

SUB-EDITORIAL With the dark nights drawing in and the clocks leaping backwards, the UPIA's trend pattern has altered significantly. As well as the usual Halloween inspired interest and reports and images being sent to us for our thoughts and analysis, we had a clash of major British events.
On arrival we found that the large lecture room that was once part of the library was no longer. The whole library had gone under alterations, so our lectures took place in a seating area for a small restaurant. Anyhow, there was ample room and it seemed that they had attracted a number of interested listeners.
Bonfire night on the 5th of November and a major Hindu festival - Dilawi, conspired to have the UK populace watch the skies; Fireworks were viewed as well as thousands of the Dilawi inspired fire lanterns, which as is the norm, were misidentified by many and reported to the UPIA as UFO's. Jupiter has been shining brightly throughout the day, and again offered an IFO being confused for a UFO. Our exotic big cat case, which still amazingly gleans copious information, had a sighting within a two mile radius of an animal which fitted in perfectly with our other sightings and information. Steve Mera and I were invited to give a presentation at the Halton Libraries paranormal week in Runcorn. A very well attended event was based around our books - Strange happenings and Paranormal Reality and cases from both were discussed and explained. Thanks to the organisers for inviting us and the public for attending. We hope to be back at next years tenth anniversary event. A special thanks to all our contributors. Dave kicked off the lectures with a visual introduction to UPIA, what they do, how they do it and why. Dave discussed several investigations, photographic analysis and his involvement with numerous TV shows. Dave also brought along a few of his books to sell. Next up was Steve who gave a visual introduction to MAPIT and talked about a number of high profile investigations as well as providing details of his new book. All in all, Halton Library’s Paranormal Week went very well. Dave and Steve have offered to return to the venue next year. Ghost Hunter Joe Holbert had faced an audience of mostly skeptics and he was nervous. “Hello, I’m Joe Holbert,” he said, “and I’m your object of abuse today.” Joe was there to tell the attendees at the‘Ghostbusting 101’ seminar, sponsored by the National Capital Area Skeptics, about his efforts to use high-technology to track “ghosts” in Leesburg, Virginia, and surrounding areas. Entitled “Ghosts and Electromagnetic Anomalies,” Joe’s talk discussed his beginnings as a ghost hunter, the equipment he uses, and some of the places he has investigated, including the “most haunted house in America,” the Lynch House, located right in Leesburg.
that power, but first we must know the nature of the power. I look for the patterns, and after dozens of interviews, a break appears.” What exactly powers these manifestations? According to Joe, people with high electromagnetic (EM) fields around their bodies tend to witness paranormal activities. They are people who do not often use technology, such as waiters, waitresses, receptionists etc. When they do use high-tech equipment, they tend to have problems with the equipment working. Joe states that the High EM generates 140+ millivolts of electricity, and the Ultra High EM generates 1+ volts. The field is a 10 Hz static field, from 50 millivolts to 1+volt, and averages 70 millivolts. Typically, says Joe, females rather than males will “see” ghosts, although some injury to the left side of the head before the age of six or seven may also induce experiences in both sexes.
Reality is Relative As Joe states in his handout, “Reality is a very personal thing, - my reality is different from yours, and yours is different from the person next to you. My reality did not include ghosts… of course, I enjoyed spooky tales at Halloween, movies about ghosts, and other oddities, but my reality did not include them. I had never experienced what anyone would refer to as a haunting situation. “Ten years ago I initiated a special event at our local museum, at the time I was on the board of directors and we needed a fund raiser. I thought a ghost tour at Halloween would be fun and profitable for the museum. I started by contacting some people in Leesburg who had reported stories of ghosts; then my reality changed.” How did Joe’s reality change? He became a believer in ghosts. “If you talk to three groups of people, all sane, not under the influence of drugs or alcohol who are upstanding citizens of the community and they tell you they have ghosts in their buildings, what do you do? Tell them they are crazy, hallucinating, or believe that they are seeing what they say and try to figure out how it can be.” Joe is trying to figure out how it can be. Joe talked of rooms in which recording equipment does not work, framed pictures that seem to float down off walls gently to the floor for no apparent reason, rooms that feel overwhelmingly sad, and blood-like stains that appear and disappear in rooms where deaths occurred.
High-Tech Arsenal Armed with an array of sound, light, movement, and energy measuring equipment, Joe tries to measure changes in the atmosphere where a manifestation is said to occur. “Any effect displayed must have a source of power. It also must have a mechanism to harness
The area of psychic occurrences, says Joe, shows electromagnetic anomalies: an area of air that has a high static charge. Joe uses the Natural EM Meter in an area of reported activity, and finds readings of a 10 Hz static field, from 50 millivolts to 1+ volt, averaging 70 millivolts, just like the field around the High EM personality. Joe admitted that he has never been able to videotape a paranormal occurrence, but that won’t keep him from trying. Time constraints prevented the audience from asking the numerous questions Joe’s talk generated. However, he had managed to gain some interest even though there were a number of raised eyebrows… Check out Leesburg Ghost Tours with VSRA at: http://vsra.yolasite.com/ Photograph by Helen Hester-Ossa

By Steve Mera. Things going bump in the night? Strange tapping sounds? Something seen out of the corner of your eye? Unusual odours in the air? Whispers on the wind? It’s true to state, all these things could constitute a haunted house. However, have you ever considered that it’s all in your mind?... The point I’m trying to make is… If you think you live in a haunted house, you will convince yourself that you have found the evidence to support it, thus reinforce the idea. Many people report hearing paranormal disturbances at night whilst they are lay on their beds or sat in silence. Silence is considered unnatural and is often associated with danger which can evoke certain innate warning responses such as fear, panic and the production of Adrenalin. It’s true that human perception can certainly be altered by silence and darkness. In some cases the human auditory system can become more sensitive as it becomes quieter thus causing any little sound to become amplified. This is known as Hyperacusis. In a study carried out by MAPIT in 1998, 86% of people said that they would fear paranormal sounds equal to, or higher than sounds generated by a household burglar, showing that certain sounds that have significant meaning during quiet times of the night have much more prevalance than those in the day, when there are much more sounds generated. Again, this is simply a psychological response. Possibly an innate warning mechanism against predators. Darkness and low level light does not help neither. There are many reports of people seeing things out of the corner of their eye. This is known as Peripheral Vision, which is produced by retinal rod cells in the eye, which differs from cone cell imagery which are the more
commonly used parts of our eye when looking as something central or in view. Rod cells are more sensitive to light levels and movement as well as having less resolution thus making it easier to see such imagery out of the corner of your eye when lights are low or off. Coupled with the fact that the human brain has a tendency to make certain images out of nothing such as faces and figures, (like looking at photographs of paraedolia), would most certainly send you on the way to believing your house is haunted. The human brain finds it difficult to judge the distance of images seen in the peripheral Vision, thus the witnesses could believe they had seen something relatively close, when in fact it was much further away. Natural house sounds can often be heard which can consist of creaking boards, tapping sounds and even dull thuds. This is brought on by natural thermal expansion and de-expansion. Rodents and other animals are more active by night and can generate sounds as they move around. Many houses have mice or even rats in close proximity. They can sometimes be heard under floors, in walls and ceilings scratching, eating or moving around. Central heating systems can cause unusual sounds in pipes and radiators. Such periodic sounds can give you a clue as to what they are. Such as the heating system turning on and off at set times during the night. Psychotic symptoms can Cause audible hallucinations. According to studies, between 6 and 18% of Europeans have experienced some form of psychosis in their lives without them even knowing it. Psychosymatic odours can be produced by the mind via suggestion. Studies show that the power of suggestion can cause people to believe they smell certain odours as well as feel certain emotions...
Also, when straining your eyes to look at a small light, it can cause what is known as Autokinesis, which is when your eye muscles move involuntary and can cause a small fixed light to look like its moving or shaking about. Darkness puts the human psyche into alert mode and causes our processes of information to be enhanced. Its also important to remember that the human eye can take about 15—20 minutes to fully adjust to the dark and that anything that you might have thought you had seen within that time may very well never have existed. Sensory deprivation such as darkness can cause some people to have hallucinations and some to suddenly become fearful. Fear of the dark is a natural trait in humans, an old Survival sense kicking in you could say.
People natural look for exits when faced with fear and cannot stop them5 into the dark corners selves looking and recesses of their rooms and thinking someone may be there. Again this natural survival sense takes over making us look into the most dangerous areas in case of predatory attack. If you believe strongly enough that someone is there, then its not impossible for the brain to manufacture an image for you. Also, similar to the T-Rex scenes out of Jurassic Park, our eyes can also act in a similar manner. This is known as Attentional Focus, when our eyes seems to be drawn to possible movement even if its in your peripheral vision.
Darkness can bring out the fear in people, some may even have Nyctophobia, (a fear of the dark) and be unaware that their fear is a result of a phobia as appose to incident induced fear. Its been said many times that people think things have been moved in the night, be it their keys, a letter, a chair or something else, when in fact they hadn’t. On many occasion we have shown people video surveillance showing them that nothing had been moved and that certain items were left in the same position they were discovered in the following morning. This happens because certain people are so sure that paranormal phenomena is taking place and convince themselves that certain items had moved in the night simply because they cannot clearly remember where they were left. Psychosymatic responses can also be attributed to the paranormal. Again during tests carried by MAPIT in 1999, 7 out of 10 students claimed to smell lavender simply because of a suggestion. On occasion, when someone says ’Oh, can you smell that? I just got
a real strong smell of flowers or Lavender. There it is again. Can you smell that?’, people will start to smell Lavender. This is a psychosymatic response, generated by the brain.
What happens is that the brain starts to think about the smell of Lavender and tries to use a schema so to identify the odour, thus in the process making you think you can smell that particular scent. Clever isn’t it?... I guess it’s the same thing when talking about being tiered and yawning heavily, then seeing people physically yawn in response. Again a schema is used to identify and a reproduction is carried out.
OK… What to do if you think your house is haunted. First of all, don’t let your imagination get the better of you. Leave a light on at night, leave the radio or TV on low, so there’s some background sound. Take into consideration the activities of nocturnal animals such as mice and rats making certain noises. Also the natural expansion and de-expansion sounds of the house. Closing windows may help you block out external sounds from outside. In some cases, people have reported whistling sounds from downstairs, when in fact its been someone passing by outside. Make a mental note where things are left, such as small items and even kitchen stools etc. Ignore everything people tell you, as their ideas and perceptions may very well be way base. Don’t let anyone encourage you to have a psychosymatic response and Ignore things seen in your peripheral vision. Don’t read stuff on the paranormal. Keep a calm and level head… Always! During an investigation in Middleton, Manchester in 1995 I met with a young couple who had recently moved into their large 3 bedroom house. After living there for several months, they were convinced paranormal phenomena was taking place. Slowly but surely, their fears grew and the stress level shot through the roof. They complained that things were being turned on such as lights. Objects were found to have been moved in the night. Strange rapping and knocking sounds were heard periodically around 3.00am. Odd smells would sometimes fill the air. Their pet cat did not like the house, and the local vicar who attended the home claimed that there was a evil spirit in the house bent on causing them upset… First of all, the young couple were fans of scary films and their large 3 bedroom house did have what you might call… a spooky appearance. In other words… a little run down, poor lighting and a slight damp smell in the air. Secondly, the pet cat disliking its new home is of no surprise. Cats can be rather choosey and will often have desires to be at other location.
I know this from having a cat for a number of years. So… nothing out of the normal there. The strange smells 6 from time to time were more than likely psychsymatic responses brought about by expectation and discussion between the couple. The items that were thought to have been moved around in the night were probably misinterpretations of paranormal phenomena. As mentioned earlier, some people simply forget where things were left and cannot recall leaving them in certain places. This was confirmed later when after the second night of video surveillance, the couple came down and told us that the car keys had been moved from the telephone table to the kitchen table. However, our video footage showed the couple leaving the keys on the kitchen table before going up to bed. On one occasion, we presumed a kitchen light had been left on and when they came down in the morning, they had forgotten that they had left it on the night before and attributed it to a paranormal incident. In fact, we were told things were being turned on, but when we asked as to what exactly had been turned on, they could only remember the kitchen light. Sometimes people have a tendency to exaggerate claims. This is not always done purposely. Sometimes it is a psychological response in hope of encouraging belief from whoever they tell. As time passes the more distorted a memory of an incident can be. As for the strange rapping and knocking sounds being heard around 3.00am. The old heating system in the cellar was responsible. It was programmed to come on and heat the water etc around 3.00am and air trapped in the water pipes caused them to make knocking sounds. Also, the couple were unaware of the natural sounds of the house due to expansion and de-expansion. OK… one last thing. This vicar that visited their home. He had told them that there was an evil spirit in their home…. Utter rubbish! More than likely, a story
concocted in hope of him gaining two more people to his congregation. Once we told the couple of our findings, and explained how our minds perceive certain sounds and actions, they were fine. In fact, they had felt a little foolish. After which, three months passed without a single incident reported. As for the vicar, we wrote to him explaining our involvement and that we were most upset with his conclusion he gave to the couple. A conclusion that reinforced their inaccurate suspicions… So… if you really want to be sure your living in a haunted house, forget what you might feel, forget what you see out of the corner of your eye, ignore what people have to say about it. Don’t bother reading up on it or watching TV shows on it. Just do a couple of tests. Try and capture something on video, audio or camera so to be sure its nothing psychological. Note where items are left and try and encourage the alleged phenomena to move something such as a trigger object. (A trigger object could be a crucifix drawn around on a piece of paper and left to
see if it has slightly moved). Be sure to eliminate all possibilities of misidentification before concluding you home is haunted. If by chance you do all this and find some evidence to support the fact that your living in a home where paranormal phenomena takes place... THEN RUN FOR THE HILLS! Only Joking…

The Truth About
Santa Claus!
What is the connection between Santa Claus and extraterrestrials? Certainly Santa is a holiday fabrication, and most people would consider extraterrestrials to be equally fictional. Yet I see a connection... First, are UFOs and aliens a reality? With so many sightings and encounters it suggests something is “out there”. Most sightings have a natural explanation. Yet enough reports hint at something else going on up in the skies… something unnatural. The behaviour of UFO’s and what occurs in cases of alien abduction seems almost supernatural. Yet almost everyday real people are claiming to have such encounters. Are these beings extraterrestrial visitors, extra-dimensional beings or something else? These aliens are so mysterious and elusive I think the only way to accurately describe them is by calling them entities. The word “Entity” can cover a lot of concepts, which is useful when we don’t know what we are dealing with. So… what does any of this have to do with Santa Claus?
The Wild Hunt Encounters with entities has taken place throughout human history and prehistory. Religion likely started as shaman contacting entities through attaining altered states of consciousness, often with the help of shrooms. This contact may have been in the imagination, but may have also included genuine contact too. Nordic shamanism and the pagan god named Odin, Woden and Woten are connected with Santa. Odin inspired the concept of Father Christmas, who in turn inspired the concept of Santa Claus. And what is up with Santa’s elves? Elves are pagan spirits mentioned in Germanic folklore like the
Elder Edda. Odin had a mythic Wild Hunt where he was accompanied by his fairies. Santa, as a watered down version of Odin, has his retinue of toy-making elves. There is not much concerning Christianity involved with Santa. Aliens are entities who may have been responsible for the fairy folklore in the past, because of encounters like we still have today. The Santa Claus character, a jolly old elf, is an entity used for children’s stories. Essentially, they are both symbolic representations of the same thing under a different guise. So… when writing to Santa this year, why not ask him to reveal his true identity… Happy Christmas Ho! Ho! Ho!

Mother calls for Chinese lantern ban after son, three, is burned by molten wax on bonfire night. By James Tozer - November 10th 2010.
Fire lanterns are now a regular occurrence throughout the UK. They come in numerous shapes and sizes as well as different colours. Many stores now sell them for around £1.00 each or 5 for £3.00 and there are no age restrictions when buying them. Chinese Lanterns or Fire Lanterns are the most commonly misidentified as UFOs. Some facts are below:
A family fireworks party ended in horror when boiling wax fell from a Chinese lantern and landed on a threeyear-old boy’s face, almost blinding him. Cael Jones and his family were gazing skywards as the paper lanterns drifted into the air, only for the freak accident to leave him with appalling burns. As his parents yesterday waited to find out whether he had suffered permanent damage, they called for the lanterns to be banned. Chinese lanterns have become a popular novelty at parties but are branded a safety risk by some farmers and pilots – and have even been linked to a spate of UFO scares. The lanterns consist of a fuel cell filled with paraffin wax suspended inside a frame of paper and wire. Once lit, they float gently upwards and drift away, landing when the fuel is spent. Cael and 20 other children had each released one at a family fireworks party at Penycae, near Wrexham, on Bonfire Night after each making a wish.
1. Such lanterns are cheap to purchase and easy to assemble. 2. They are seen in the night sky as an Incandescent Orange / White flickering ball of light. 3. They can sometimes be seen to travel in lines or groups, especially when they are tethered to each other. 4. Sometimes they are seen to be different sizes. This is due to some being closer to you than others.
But as Cael and his mother Emma watched in wonder, a melted section fell out of one of the lanterns in mid-air and landed on the child’s face. ‘It’s shocking what happened – it was the worst night of my life,’ his 23-year-old mother said yesterday. ‘A lantern got to about the height of the roof when the burner bit – about the size of the palm of your hand – fell on to Cael’s face. ‘The oil got stuck on his face and his face was black. Everyone was screaming. He couldn’t open his eyes.’
5. They can appear to be moving relatively fast. This is due top higher wind speeds at differing altitudes. 6. They can sometimes appear to be travelling in different directions. This is due to multiple wind directions at differing altitudes. 7. Finally, they can sometimes be seen to fade out. This is due to the light source burning out. On closer inspection many often report a smoky tail or smoke coming from them. They are silent and can travel great distances. Many lanterns are launched on November 5th and December 31st, but generally launched anytime throughout the year now and are often the cause of many local UFO flaps. There are many hazards caused by Fire Lanterns. Recently International Airports throughout the UK have issued warnings to pilots. Lanterns are very light in weight and could easily entangle propellers and be sucked into the intake of aircraft engines. They can also cause outbreaks of fire. A number of wooden sheds and fencing have been burnt by falling fire lanterns. They can also be dangerous to livestock and wildlife. In strong winds the candle part of the lantern can twist round and ignite the actual fabric thus causing the whole thing to suddenly burst into flames. Hot wax can also fall from fire lanterns and cause serious burns, (as seen to the right). MAPIT and UPIA are developing a campaign to ban fire lanterns and are asking for support from our readers and the media.
Cael, pictured with his father, Terry Williams, was at a family bonfire party when the accident happened. His mother, Emma Folkes, has called for a ban on Chinese lanterns. Relatives doused Cael’s face with water while an ambulance was called, and the youngster was taken to hospital for treatment. His eyes are not thought to be damaged but doctors are to examine him again later this week to assess whether he will be permanently scarred. Calling for a ban on the lanterns, Cael’s mother said: ‘I want people to realise how dangerous they are.’ Her partner, Terry Williams, 24, who is unemployed, added: ‘These lanterns shouldn’t be on the shelf if they’re not safe.’ The National Farmers Union is opposed to Chinese lanterns, saying they can ignite crops, while the wire section can injure livestock when it falls into fields. Safety groups have also warned they may be mistaken for coastal distress flares or aircraft in difficulty. Manufacturers say they should not be released by children and warn people not to stand beneath them immediately after they are lit as melting wax may drip off. However, Paul Whybro, the safety manager for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said Chinese lanterns could never be made completely safe because of their nature. MAPIT & UPIA support the ban on Fire Lanterns.
Rockets Galore. Colin Veacock takes a look at the UFO Phenomenon.
Some UFO sightings are just begging to be sensibly investigated and identified. The problem is there aren’t many serious UFO investigators out there! Far too many times I’ve heard pin points of light in the night sky described as “mother ships” or “scout craft”. It seems the norm for those professing to be experts in this field to over exaggerate the size and speed of these objects so it becomes more mysterious and therefore conforms to their personal bias and belief in aliens. It is widely believed that nine out of every ten genuine UFO reports can be logically explained and positively identified, but if the truth be told, those that stubbornly remain unexplained would be positively identified if those investigating the subject stopped looking to the heavens for their answers and looked closer to home… One such case that is screaming out for a conventional, down to earth, explanation took place at 5pm on Monday 25th January 2010, in the remote community of Harbour Mille, on the coast of the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Harbour Mille is a quiet settlement consisting of roughly 200 people, many of them retired and elderly, which is a four hour drive from the nearest other community, a ten hour drive to the nearest city and a six hour drive to the nearest airport.
Emmy Pardy was about to take a photograph of the sunset when an object suddenly rose up out of the water in the bay, leaned over to a 45 degree angle trailing fire and smoke behind it, and zipped over head, finally disappearing from sight over harbour Mille. Having taken a photograph Emmy called her neighbour, Darlene Stewart, to watch as another three objects, far off in the distance over the sea, climbed steeply into the air only to veer off in various directions. Emmy described the object she photographed as being, “an over sized silver bullet,” while Darlene believed that what she had seen was a missile… When Emmy was later interviewed about her sighting she said, “It appeared to come out of the ocean. It was like it was in the middle of the bay. It’s kind of scary because you don’t know if something is being set off in the bay or if someone is doing experiments.” Talk of the mysterious sightings spread like wild fire. Some theorised that the objects were meteorites or satellites burning up in the atmosphere, while some pondered that they may have been genuine UFOs. A Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman, Sergeant Wayne Edgecombe, was sent to investigate and duly interviewed the witnesses and looked at the picture. Later, DSTI (Department Of Scientific And Technical Intelligence) minutely studied the photograph and wrote, The object is not a ballistic missile, nor a cruise missile in boost phase, nor a cruise missile in flight phase. It is also not a licensed model rocket launcher… Before he left Sergeant Edgecombe approached the Department Of National Defense and later reported that they had told him what the silver bullet shaped object seen above Harbour Mille was but he wouldn’t be drawn on discussing it further, saying that it was up to the government to divulge that information.
Well, the Canadian government may well have shared what it was with the RCMP officer but it wasn’t about to tell its citizens the truth, as they continued to stonewall and repeated that the object was a true unknown. The Prime Ministers Press Secretary, Dimitri Soudon, went on record stating, “There is no indication that there was a rocket launch”, while NORAD (North American Aerospace Defence Command) confirmed that they hadn’t detected it. Captain Kendrah Allison, spokesperson for the Department Of National Defence, also came forward and said that they weren’t aware of any missile testing in the area. However, word amongst the good people of Harbour Mille began to circulate that the objects seen off their coast were indeed tactical missiles launched by a French submarine hiding in their territorial waters. The outrage caused by the French apparently testing missiles in their locality reached such heights that it caused Liberal MP for Humber- St BerbeBaie Verte, Gerry Byrne, to state on CBC News, “There’s a credible body of evidence that suggests there’s something spectacular happening off our shore. Before this goes any further I think the government needs to actually respond very quickly with a straight forward, factual statement.” He later went on to wonder whether the three objects seen streaking into the skies out to sea may have been missiles launched from the French owned islands of St Pierre and Miquelon, a series of eight relatively small islands some 25km off the Canadian coast. These islands are inhabited by fishermen and their families, plus a large seal population, and the notion that the French had a base secreted away there capable of launching such missiles is interesting fantasy. However, at 9.25am, on the 27th January, two days after the Harbour Mille incident, a French Triomphant class strategic nuclear submarine, Le Terrible, launched a M51 SLBM missile from the Bay of Audierne in north west France. This launch was witnessed by French fishermen and was photographed from southern England as it began its twenty minute flight which would eventually see it crash into the Atlantic some 2,000 kilometres off the north Carolina coast. The fact that the French missile test happened two days after Emmy Pardy’s sighting didn’t stop people pointing an accusing finger in their general direction. While tempers flared the Canadian government stood by and appeared impotent! This prompted Liberal Senator, George Baker, to mockingly question whether their Prime Minister wasn’t too cosy with Sarkozy!
Subjugator, which was a replica of the mini flying sub in the cult TV series, Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea. It would seem that they aren’t the only ones interested in perfecting a flying submarine! In 2006 the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works were already putting the finishing touches to their Cormorant system which is an unmanned flying submarine which could be used for surveillance or armed with a warhead.
It was at this time that the Canadian government finally stirred and began to openly come out of its shell and put forward its own ridiculous ideas concerning the incident. They blatantly lied about the object being a model rocket that was launched from an area near Harbour Mille that was notorious with model aircraft enthusiasts. The rest of Canada may have been taken in by this falsehood but the people of Harbour Mille were not! Nobody in the community knew anyone who owned a model aircraft, and besides, the temperature at the time of the sighting was 14 degrees below freezing! Who in their right mind would be out firing off model rockets in such inclement weather conditions? Then, to add insult to injury, Defence Minister, Peter MacKay, announced, tongue firmly in cheek, that the government was about to finance and build a landing strip for UFOs at Harbour Mille… The intent was obvious. The government clearly wanted to play down the incident while heaping ridicule on the witnesses. Looking at this sighting logically it would seem that whatever the objects were, they had to be launched from a submerged submarine hiding somewhere out in the bay. So do Canada own submarines capable of carrying out such a launch? The honest answer is no. Canada owns four Victoria class long range patrol submarines, the Victoria- Windsor-Corner Brook and Chicoutimi, bought off the UK in 1998, which were primarily bought to protect Canada’s territorial waters, especially those around the Arctic circle. Many Canadian Prime Ministers have bitterly complained in the past about US submarines operating illegally in their waters. On the 27/1/2006, the Canadian media reported that a US nuclear submarine travelled secretly through its territorial waters in
November of the previous year while it was en route to the North Pole. In August 2009 two Russian Akula class nuclear subs were spotted patrolling east coast waters apparently testing Canada’s defences. In recent years the Arctic has become an international hot spot as countries such as Russia, USA and Denmark amongst others, begin to compete for the regions oil, gas and mineral reserves. The Danish Defence Intelligence Agency have reported that these important reserves are of such importance that the Arctic could spawn diplomatic and military conflict in the near future. If, as it seems, various countries submarines are playing an increasingly dangerous game of cat and mouse off the icy waters of Canada’s east coast, who, or what, prompted the firing of a missile? Perhaps it wasn’t a missile!? No explosion was heard and no country, as of yet, has come forward to announce the loss of one of its submarines. If it wasn’t a missile what else could it possibly be? What else could burst out of the ocean and then simply fly away..? A flying submarine perhaps? Before you laugh at such a suggestion consider this. In 2004
students competing in the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Competition, created a remote controlled machine named the
It is said to weigh 4 tons, is made from brushed titanium and has wings that mould around the cylindrical body by way of special hinges. The Cormorant is launched from the Trident missile tubes on a cold war era Ohio class submarine. Once the tube doors are opened the natural buoyancy of the Cormorant causes it to rapidly rise to the surface where, once it has broke the surface, two Tomahawk solid rocket boosters would fire sending the sub into the sky where the wings would unfold. So was the object photographed by Emmy Pardy at Harbour Mille a Cormorant UAV seen prior to the wings extending? Who knows, but as far as I’m concerned it makes far more sense than believing that the object was being piloted by aliens…
News... 11 Hurt In Plunge 'Fleeing From Devil'.
Paul, the Psychic Octopus Dies - 26/10/10.
Sky News - October 24th 2010. Eleven people have been injured jumping out of a second-floor flat window after apparently thinking they had seen the devil. Police are investigating the incident which took place in the early hours in the small town of La Verriere, west of Paris. Officers said some of the injured were children including a four-month-old baby, who is in a serious condition in a children's hospital in the French capital. "Thirteen people were in an apartment on the second floor when, at around 3am, one of the occupants heard his child crying," said Odile Faivre, the deputy prosecutor in Versailles. "The man in question, of African origin, who was completely naked, got up to feed his child, at which point the other occupants took him for the devil."He was seriously wounded in the hand after being stabbed with a knife before he was thrown out of the apartment, via the door." The 30-year-old man then tried to force his way back into the room. "That's when the other occupants tried to escape by jumping out of the window, panicked by a fear of the devil," said Ms Faivre. Police are questioning the naked man as well as another man who jumped from the window with a two-year-old girl in his arms. Seven of those injured - who were African, possibly from Angola - were taken to hospital for emergency treatment. Detectives are trying to find out if the group jumped voluntarily or were forced. November 1st 2010. Pop star Diana Vickers called in an exorcist after she became spooked by a series of ghostly goings-on at her home. The Once hitmaker was living on her own two years ago when she began hearing creepy noises in her apartment and her personal property would move by itself. She became so terrified she called in an expert to perform an exorcism - but quit the home days later. Vickers tells the Sunday Mirror magazine, "I used to have a ghost that lived in my house, and I had an exorcism to get rid of it on my birthday... In that house I always felt like someone else was there. I'd literally just turned 17 and was living by myself - I had to go to sleep with the light on for about six weeks. "When it got to that point, I brought someone in to do an exorcism because I needed someone to tell me what was there. I was hearing voices, I could sense things and I'd find things in places I knew they shouldn't be. I'd be in the shower and hear someone knocking on the door. I'd just cry. I'm not a crying person, but I walked in one night and thought, 'I don't feel right', it was weird. I had to go." And it wasn't the star's first encounter with the supernatural - she experienced a violent haunting when she was a child. Vickers adds, "We had poltergeists in the first house we lived in as a family. They used to throw candles - poltergeists love throwing candles... It was crazy... We already had that house up for sale so we were out of there a few months later."
Paul the Octopus, the cephalopod who became a global sensation after successfully predicting matches at the World Cup, has died peacefully in his sleep aged two. Stefan Porwoll, general manager of the Oberhausen Sea Life centre in Germany - where Paul made his predictions - confirmed the news. "He died last night, a peaceful and natural death," Porwoll said. Paul, who was born in January 2008 in Weymouth, correctly predicted the winner of all seven of Germany's matches at this summer's World Cup in South Africa. He then correctly chose Spain over the Netherlands before the final. Paul made his predictions by choosing between two feed boxes which bore the flags of the two nations involved in the next match. Time and again his predictions came true, transforming him into a global sensation who attracted big-money transfer offers after the tournament. Yet the Oberhausen Sea Life centre insisted on keeping their star attraction - and are now devastated at the news of his passing. "We all loved him and we will all truly miss him," added Porwoll. Another alleged Psychic Octopus emerges. Punters may be reeling from the loss of Paul the psychic octopus, but the predictive prowess of his cousin Ollie is being put to the test in Blackpool. Paul hit the headlines during the World Cup by picking eight out of eight correct results from the group stage all the way to the final from his tank in Oberhausen, Germany. The English-born creature passed away last month, but Ollie is hoping to emulate the cousin he grew up with in Weymouth before they went their separate ways in 2008. Having correctly predicted his hometown team would win the Championship play-off last season and making several pre-season picks, Ollie will soon be making his selections in public at Sea Life Blackpool. Blackpool Council's Helen France said: 'Ollie is a popular figure at Sea Life and we are all keen to share his talents with the nation’s football fans. The Blackpool away trip for Premier League fans is becoming a family favourite, so this is a great opportunity to turn a tangerine football weekend into a fun filled trip.' Visitors can enjoy all sorts of discounts with Ollie's first public prediction coming on November 20 before the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers and is due to do his stuff at 11am before each remaining Blackpool home game in the Barclays Premier League this season. Ollie has already predicted away wins for the Tangerines' games at Aston Villa and West Ham, which will delight namesake Ian 'Ollie' Holloway. And the octopus has foreseen title glory for Chelsea come May and predicts Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will be top scorer.
Ancient Human Metropolis Found in Africa.
By Dan Eden.
They have always been there. People noticed them before. But no one could remember who made them -- or why? Until just recently, no one even knew how many there were. Now they are everywhere -- thousands -- no, hundreds of thousands of them! And the story they tell is the most important story of humanity. But it's one we might not be prepared to hear. Something amazing has been discovered in an area of South Africa, about 150 miles inland, west of the port of Maputo. It is the remains of a huge metropolis that measures, in conservative estimates, about 1500 square miles. It's part of an even larger community that is about 10,000 square miles and appears to have been constructed -- are you ready -- from 160,000 to 200,000 BCE! The image [top of page] is a close-up view of just a few hundred meters of the landscape taken from google-earth. The region is somewhat remote and the "circles" have often been encountered by local farmers who assumed they were made by some indigenous people in the past. But, oddly, no one ever bothered to inquire about who could have made them or how old they were. This changed when researcher and author, Michael Tellinger, teamed up with Johan Heine, a local fireman and pilot who had been looking at these ruins from his years flying over the region. Heine had the unique advantage to see the number and extent of these strange stone foundations and knew that their significance was not being appreciated. "When Johan first introduced me to the ancient stone ruins of southern Africa, I had no idea of the incredible discoveries we would make in the year or two that followed. The photographs, artifacts and evidence we have accumulated points unquestionably to a lost and never-before-seen civilization that predates all others -- not by just a few hundred years, or a few thousand years... but many thousands of years. These discoveries are so staggering that they will not be easily digested by the mainstream historical and archaeological fraternity, as we have already experienced. It will require a complete paradigm shift in how we view our human history. " -- Tellinger The area is significant for one striking thing -- gold. "The thousands of ancient gold mines discovered over the past 500 years, points to a vanished civilization that lived and dug for gold in this part of the world for thousands of years," says Tellinger. "And if this is in fact the cradle of humankind, we may be looking at the activities of the oldest civilization on Earth." To see the number and scope of these ruins, I suggest that you use google-earth and start with the following coordinates:Â
Carolina -- 25 55' 53.28" S / 30 16' 13.13" E Badplaas -- 25 47' 33.45" S / 30 40' 38.76" E Waterval -- 25 38' 07.82" S / 30 21' 18.79" E Machadodorp -- 25 39' 22.42" S / 30 17' 03.25" E Then perform a low flying search inside the area formed by this rectangle. Simply Amazing! Did gold play some role in the dense population that once lived here? The site is just about 150 miles from an excellent port where maritime trade could have helped to support such a large population. But remember -- we're talking almost 200,000 years ago!
The individual ruins mostly consist of stone circles. Most have been buried in the sand and are only observable by satellite or aircraft. Some have been exposed when the changing climate has blown the sand away, revealing the walls and foundations.
The main reason for this is that we have been taught that nothing of significance has ever come from southern Africa. That the powerful civilizations all emerged in Sumeria and Egypt and other places. We are told that until the settlement of the BANTU people from the north, which was supposed to have started sometime in the 12th century AD, this part of the world was filled by hunter gatherers and so-called Bushmen, who did not make any major contributions in technology or civilization." -- Tellinger When explorers first encountered these ruins, they assumed that they were cattle corals made by nomadic tribes, like the Bantu people, as they moved south and settled the land from around the 13th century. There was no previous historical record of any older civilization capable of building such a densly populated community. Little effort was made to investigate the site because the scope of the ruins was not fully known. Over the past 20 years, people like Cyril Hromnik, Richard Wade, Johan Heine and a handful of others have discovered that these stone structures are not what the seem to be. In fact these are now believed to be the remains of ancient temples and astronomical observatories of lost ancient civilizations that stretch back for many thousands of years. These circular ruins are spread over a huge area. They can only truly be appreciated from the air or through modern sattelite images. Many of them have almost completely eroded or have been covered by the movement of soil from farming and the weather. Some have survived well enough to reveal their great size [see above] with some original walls standing almost 5 feet high and over a meter wide in places.
"I see myself as a fairly open-minded chap but I will admit that it took me well over a year for the penny to drop, and for me to realise that we are actually dealing with the oldest structures ever built by humans on Earth. A rich and diverse history...
Looking at the entire metropolis, it be comes obvious that this was a well planned community, developed by a highly evolved civilization. The number of ancient gold mines suggests the reason for the community being in this location. We find roads -- some extending a hundred miles -- that connected the community and terraced agriculture, closely resembling those found in the Inca settlements in Peru. But one question begs for an answer -how could this be achieved by humans 200,000 years ago? Once the ruins were examined, the researchers were anxious to place the lost civilization in a historical perspective. The rocks were covered with a patina that looked very old but there were no items sufficient for carbon-14 dating. It was then that a chance discovery revealed the age of the site, and sent a chill down the spine of archaeologists and historians! Further investigation and research is to be carried out...
Old St Chads, No Mans Heath, Cheshire. By dave sadler.
Finding Old Saint Chads is probably the hardest thing you’re ever likely to do, the only people to know of its existence are the locals. Its setting, when found, is idyllic. From the main A41 Highroad, a narrow country track of around half a mile leads to a dead end with three gates leading into the fields. They are the only visible means to carry on. Looking over the middle gate a church spire is barely visible in the dip between the trees; another short walk is therefore required down the hill along a faint trail which leads straight to the churches front gate. Old Saint Chads is totally alone in the fields.
When a Victorian church was built nearly a mile away – New Saint Chads – in 1863, this tiny chapel was left to stand as its graveyard was the only one in the parish, and remains so today. Old Saint Chads was originally built in 1689, built upon the foundations of an older timber framed church. Local gentry have long patronized the church, with a gallery and viewing box reflecting their influence. Along with the church and graveyard stands an old garage which houses what is probably one of the best Victorian horse drawn hearses in existence. It is here our ghostly tales begin. This hearse has often been reported to be heard making a spectral journey at night. People have checked, but the hearse remained still in its home, although the sounds continued.. We have received more reports from witnesses regarding this site, but a well known and high standing person from the local community told us of his visit to the grounds one evening. He described hearing the sounds of the singing parishioners emanating from inside the Church. He decided to investigate, as he knew of no event there or person who should have been within, especially not a choir. He peered into the church, and as he did so the singing stopped. He backed away, feeling both scared and as if he was being watched, and retreated to the safety of his car. It took the gentleman some time to return to the church. A lady in white has been reported within the field, although the witness was unable to describe the incident well. He was unsure of other persons in the area. Also in the field we have been told of a spectral hound, running across the field. Regarding these two sightings, although reported as unknown by respectable witnesses we believe that nature may have a hand – people not wishing to be seen, a dog out for a run, foxes, maybe even a big cat,
although the witnesses may have seen mist formations. Finally, a report of a large cowl clad person leaning as if in prayer over a gravestone. When called upon, the person diminished. This is made more exciting by a UPIA investigator witnessing a similar incident, a mist like vapor in a huddled man-type shape near to a gravestone. Photographs were taken immediately, and on several occasions after video footage was recorded. None of these recordings, along with audio recordings made around the yard, church or hearse garage have revealed any unusual signs. The Church is very beautiful, the scenery around is an artist’s dream, and oh for its quietness… How to find Old St. Chads, Tushingham. Either take a walk along the trail or park just off the A41 near Barhill Farm and take a gentle stroll across the fields . Map Ref.527463

Brit Housewife is UFO Magnet! By Tim Spanton - November 11th 2010.
Bridget Grant looks like an ordinary housewife more at home making the school run than giving speeches at public conferences around the world. But her extraordinary experiences mean she is in big demand both here and in America. For Bridget is widely recognised in the UFO world as the Briton most visited by aliens. In her 40 years she claims to have had at least 17 encounters with UFOs, including five up close.
“Why me? I don't know. I can't understand it but I need answers," she said. "I can't explain what's happening to me. I feel very happy that I've witnessed what I have. "But I am frustrated that my experiences are ones I haven't been able to tell to most people for fear of ridicule." Bridget says her alien encounters began when she was a little girl living in a village in Devon, although at the time she did not realise their significance.
"I was seven years old and it was in the school holidays and I know it was winter," she recalled. "I had to get home for tea and I decided for some reason to walk through the village on a different route from my normal one. "I met what I thought was a very small Chinese girl. She was about my height and I thought she was Chinese because of her eyes. "She showed me some money - a Hong Kong note - and she showed me her house. "She didn't say much but I had to get home for tea so we arranged to meet the next day. "The next day I went back at about the same time but the house was no longer there. "It had been at the end of a cul-de-sac but now there was a field where the house had been”. "In the field was a gazebo surrounded by coloured lights. I think I recognised it from watching Elvis Presley films on TV at Christmas! "The grass shimmered from the lights and I can remember jumping down from something and going home." Bridget never saw the "Chinese girl" or the "gazebo" again. Looking back on the incident 33 years later, she wonders if the girl was really an alien - a so-called Grey. UFO experts she has told the story to suggest the gazebo may have been a spaceship. It is possible aliens implanted what are known as "screen memories" to make her see a little girl and a gazebo rather than the more alarming images of an alien and spaceship. Bridget continued: "As I was growing up I had many paranormal encounters with ghosts - people who had died in the past and people who had died more recently. "I would be told someone had died, wherever it was, in particular circumstances. "Some of the ghosts seemed as real as you and me - sometimes they seemed less solid. "These paranormal experiences went on from when I was five or six until I was 21." Bridget says her next big incident with aliens came in February 1993 when she was working in Los Angeles as a make-up artist.
"I was driving a girl called Jane - she was a friend of a friend to an interview in Rodeo Drive where she hoped to work as a hairdresser," Bridget said. "I had to call in to see someone in an area called Brentwood. "I was just leaving the freeway on the off-ramp near the Holiday Inn when we were stopped by a traffic light. "This feeling of apprehension came over me. It was like stage fright - I was very anxious and my hands were gripping the steering wheel tighter and tighter. "I saw a glimmer of sliver reflecting from the metal frame between the door and the windscreen and then to the left over my head was this massive craft. "It was eight to ten metres away, silver, round and 35ft to 40ft long”. "There was no noise, no wings and no exhaust fumes or anything like that. "There was a burning red-orange glow underneath and I thought, 'What the hell is this?' "It was gliding through the tops of some trees. Jane saw it too”. "The traffic light changed and in my mind I felt, 'I need to make a left over the bridge behind the Holiday Inn.' "My mind was racing and I was shaking. It had disappeared from view and I said to Jane, 'We're both going to get out and point where we think the craft went.' "We both got out and pointed to the left. My eyes were watering, streaming. "I was all over the place. I couldn't believe what had happened. "Later there was a most roaring noise and four or five black, unmarked military helicopters flew over. "They were obviously going to intercept that craft, and I thought, 'You're not going to catch that.' "That night I got home to Bill, my partner at the time, but I couldn't physically say anything to him. My brain was racing. "The next day I kicked him out, packed my belongings and left. Jane did the same two days later." Bridget added: "I know many people won't believe me. "You have to be very selective - you can't just tell all your neighbours. "People say, 'Yeah, right, OK,' but for them seeing is believing and they haven't seen what I've seen." Bridget returned to Devon and set up the South West Witness Support Group to try to meet people with similar experiences. She is writing a book about her experiences but says she still doesn't fully understand what happened...
The Parting of the Red Sea By Jerry Norton.
Wind could have parted Red Sea for Moses: Moses might not have parted the Red Sea, but a strong east wind that blew through the night could have pushed the waters back in the way described in biblical writings and the Koran, U.S. researchers reported recently. Computer simulations, part of a larger study on how winds affect water, show wind could push water back at a point where a river bent to merge with a coastal lagoon, the team at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and the University of Colorado at Boulder said. "The simulations match fairly closely with the account in Exodus," Carl Drews of NCAR, who led the study, said in a statement. "The parting of the waters can be understood through fluid dynamics. The wind moves the water in a way that's in accordance with physical laws, creating a safe passage with water on two sides and then abruptly allowing the water to rush back in." Religious texts differ a little in the tale, but all describe Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt ahead of a pharaoh's armies around 3,000 years ago. The Red Sea parts to let Moses and his followers pass safely, then crashes back onto the pursuers, drowning them. Drews and colleagues are studying how Pacific Ocean typhoons can drive storm surges and other effects of strong and sustained winds on deep water. His team pinpointed a possible site south of the Mediterranean Sea for the legendary crossing, and modelled different land formations that could have existed then and perhaps led to the accounts of the sea appearing to part. The model requires a U-shaped formation of the Nile River and a shallow lagoon along the shoreline. It shows that a wind of 63 miles per hour, blowing steadily for 12 hours, could have pushed back waters 6 feet deep. "This land bridge is 3-4 km (2 to 2.5 miles) long and 5 km (3 miles) wide, and it remains open for 4 hours," they wrote in the Public Library of Science journal PLoS ONE. "People have always been fascinated by this Exodus story, wondering if it comes from historical facts," Drews said. "What this study shows is that the description of the waters parting indeed has a basis in physical laws." Just as the burning bush could have been a Dictamnus albus, a flowering shrub that grows to a height of about two feet. Native to a wide swath of Europe and Asia, including Israel, it's commonly called "fraxinella," "dittany," and, more pertinently for our story, "gas plant" and "burning bush."
Hologr^m Mess^ging Coming of @ge. By Jonathan Amos. It has long been a staple of science fiction films - the idea that you could send a moving 3D representation of someone to any location, even on another continent. Now, US researchers claim this fantasy is very close to reality. A University of Arizona team says it has devised a system that can make a holographic display appear in another place and update it in near real-time. "We foresee many applications, for example in manufacturing," said Professor Nasser Peyghambarian from Arizona's College of Optical Sciences. "Car manufacturers or airplane manufacturers could look at holograms and design their systems in real time. They could look at 3D models and make changes as they go. "Imagine a very complicated surgical procedure - then with this system surgeons around the world could participate. They could see the whole procedure in real-time and in 3D, and help out," he told BBC News. Ever since the Princess Leia character was magically projected in 3D during the original Star Wars film, people have wondered if such a technology might really be possible. The system demonstrated this week is far from the finished product, but it gives a very strong hint of what might be achievable with further refinements. At its heart is a new plastic screen material that will record 3D holographic images time and time again, every two seconds. In a set up described, 16 cameras recorded 2D images of objects and people from multiple angles That information was then sent to another location using a computer connection.
At the remote site, a laser was used to "print" the visual information on to the new photosensitive polymer. The 3D image composed of the 16 perspectives decays naturally, but the laser can write the next "frame" before it completely disappears. The team previously gave an update on its work in a 2008 Nature paper. Back then, its 10cm-by-10cm, one-colour screen could only be updated every four minutes. The new 45cm-by-45cm, multi-colour screen is re-written in a hundredth of the time. No glasses are needed to see the images, merely some form of illumination. And unlike "standard 3D" TV or films that produce a simple parallax effect in which each eye is offered one slightly different perspective on the same object, the scope of the holographic images is built from the many views of numerous cameras. Theoretically, say the researchers, it should be possible to project a full 360-degree hologram, one where an individual standing on one side of the screen sees the front of a printed object while someone standing on the other side of the screen sees its rear. So while it is not quite Princess Leia being projected in free space, the
system could conceivably produce a very rounded telepresence. The team concedes its prototype system has a lot of development ahead of it, but the researchers believe the first commercial products could be available in a few years' time. One key advance needed is the ability to re-print the polymer at least 30 times a second. This would give a much more realistic sense of movement. The screen itself needs to be made much bigger and additional cameras would have to be incorporated to provide more detail and at significantly higher resolutions. And all this would have large processing and bandwidth implications which would likely limit the system's use to high-end applications - certainly in the early stages of commercialisation. "Coming up with improvements to the polymer is going to take some time, and also coming up with better lasers is going to take some time. In about two to three years, we should be able to do those aspects," said Professor Peyghambarian. "And then transferring that into a product is going to take another three to four years. But I don't believe there is any physics that would prevent us from getting there..."

In 2004, The Kansas State Board of Education voted to make the teaching of Intelligent Design a requirement for schools in the state. This caused outrage amongst a large section of the public, religious and non-religious alike, as the intention was to teach the subject as a Science rather than a religious subject and to give it equal status to Evolution. Intelligent Design purports the idea of a creative intelligence actively modifying the design of living organisms and thus creating the variation that can be observed throughout the Plant and Animal kingdoms.
Henderson also, rather helpfully, pointed out that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters were a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. He concluded by demanding that the schools teach “One third time for Intelligent Design, one third time for Flying Spaghetti Monsterism, and one third time for logical conjecture based on overwhelming observable evidence”. Henderson received no reply from the Board until he posted the letter on his web site, generating significant interest. His satirical protest, like its Deity, took off and captured the imaginations of many. It has become regarded as an emblem somewhat similar to Bertrand Russell’s orbiting teapot and also used by atheists and agnostics (referred to as “Spagnostics” by Pastafarians) as a counter to religious arguments i.e. the requirement to “prove” that something does not exist being submitted as proof of existence in itself. Henderson himself has stated that he personally has no problem with religion but rather religion posing as science. He has also added that “If there is a god and he's intelligent, then I would guess he has a sense of humour."
It avoids the prohibition of Creationism being taught as a Science by offering no specification of the form of the creative designer. This leaves open the possibility that any imagined entity could fill this role. In January 2005, The Kansas State Board of Education received an open letter from Bobby Henderson, a “concerned citizen”, stating his concern that only one theory of Intelligent Design would be taught. Henderson outlined his own belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster and that “the overwhelming scientific evidence pointing towards evolutionary processes is nothing but a coincidence, put in place by Him”. Furthermore, every time a Scientist makes a measurement to provide evidence that may support Scientific theories relating to the age of the earth, such as Carbon Dating samples, that he is there and adjusting the result with his Noodly Appendage. Henderson claimed that he and his fellow “Pastafarians” were in excess of 10 million followers.
“
Since the original letter, the following of the Flying Spaghetti Monster has grown to such a level that much detail has been added to Henderson’s original letter and even a ‘Gospel’ produced outlining the core beliefs of Pastafarians.
The Gospel reveals how the Universe was created by the invisible and undetectable Flying Spaghetti Monster who had been drinking heavily at the time. The subsequent flaws in the earth were due to His drunken state at the time. Evidence for evolution was planted in an effort to test the faith of Pastafarians and any subsequent experiments which seem to show such evidence have been invisibly altered by His Noodly Appendage. Important to the belief is the divine quality of Pirates, as they were the original Pastafarians, peace loving travellers fond of giving sweets to children. The subsequent labeling of pirates as rogues and thieves is described as being due to misinformation spread by Christians and Hare Krishna followers. Pastafarians observe “Talk like a Pirate Day” on the 19th September where Robert Newton-inspired pirate vocals are heard throughout the world. Heaven, to a Pastafarian, contains beer volcanoes and a stripper factory. Hell is rather similar but the beer is stale, and the strippers all have VD. Last Christmas, in Green Bay, Wisconsin, city officials installed a Christian Nativity scene on top of a public building. Drama ensued when the council refused to allow displays from other religions, most notably a Flying Spaghetti Monster display.
The proposal, sent in by Henderson was rejected as “silly”. Henderson responded “I’m sure most of us Pastafarians are not offended by Jesus displays. I assume that most Christians would enjoy a festive Pastafarian display. If we’re going to allow one religious display, why not allow them all? What’s the problem? Who doesn’t like pirates and strippers?” The City of Green Bay is currently being sued by the Freedom from Religion Foundation on the basis that a display depicting thebirth of Jesus on a public building violates the Constitution as a governmental endorsement of religion. The original inclusion of Pirates and the graph depicting their decline in relation to Natural and manmade disasters had a serious point, however; It was intended as a warning against the non-Scientific interpretation of correlating data and inferring causation from unconnected streams of similar data. Henderson’s ‘Global Average Temperature Vs. Number of Pirates’ graph can Be seen to the Right...
The church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster continues to grow and has been embraced in popular culture as well as being used to put forward important scientific and philosophical concepts. It also raises the question of whether an anti-religion, which consists of a community of followers with practiced rituals and shared core beliefs, albeit not serious theological beliefs, may actually constitute a religion in its own right. I will close with a quote from the Prophet, Bobby Henderson:
“We believe that humans evolved from pirates. Consider that humans share around 95% DNA with monkeys, and more than 99.9% DNA with pirates”... Chris Parr Interviews Nick Pope for
PHENOMENA MAGAZINE… December 2010.
CP: Let’s return to 1996. Mulder and Scully had brought paranormal research and UFO`s into the mainstream with the hugely popular X-Files. UFO magazine had a large circulation around the world and many areas in the UK created their own UFO group. It seemed ufological studies would be around forever, yet eventually, the groups faded away and so did the majority of the ufologists who were so once so passionate about researching the UFO enigma. We can establish that market forces can determine the longevity of a magazine, yet what caused the rapid decline of most of the UFO groups? Did the X-Files create a brief generation of wannabe investigators and did the internet create the desire for instant information that undermined the old fashioned UFO report formula with its mainly anecdotal content? NP: I think several factors were involved. The X-Files may have played a part, bringing people to ufology who then drifted away when it failed to match their aspiration of being a route to becoming a real-life Mulder or Scully. The publishing industry overbought UFO and alien abduction books and similarly, the market couldn’t sustain the number of newsstand magazines on the subject. Most booms are followed by a bust and while that’s an oversimplification of a more complex situation, that’s essentially what happened to ufology. Interest in any subject is often cyclic, so ufology may become increasingly popular. Also, of course, the subject is events-led, so an interesting sighting or the discovery of interesting new official documents on the subject may lead to renewed interest. CP: Again in the mid nineties, you were now the UK`s Fox Mulder figure from the MoD and you were hardly given a warm welcome from British ufology, apart from the late Graham Birdsall at UFO magazine. This new breed of ufologists were expecting immediate disclosure on the UFO mystery and also highly territorial in nature. There was a feeling of mistrust towards any government information regarding UFO`s and here was Nick Pope facing the brunt of it all. Did you expect such a reaction when you entered mainstream ufology? and can you give any insight towards your experience of being the 'Insider from the UFO desk? and do you regret that you could not release more classified UFO information at the time? NP: As you say, the initial reaction to my involvement was mistrust. Few of my predecessors at the MoD had reached out to the UFO community in the way that I had, so my effort to establish a cordial working relationship with ufologists was greeted with suspicion. They either wanted a ‘quick-fix’ (instant ‘Disclosure’) and were disappointed when it didn’t come, or thought that my entire output was disinformation. As for not being able to release more information, I wasn’t - and have never been - a whistleblower, so could only ever release information that was unclassified. My time on MoD’s UFO project (1991 – 1994) was long before the introduction of the Freedom of Information Act and MoD’s decision to declassify and release its UFO files. CP: Ufology is considered a strange subject and sometimes attracts strange people. You have previously mentioned that some 'Walter Mitty' type characters play the role of 'Men in Black' or masquerade as some shadowy 'deep throat figure' in a UFO secrecy role. Have you any example of these incidents that you can divulge? NP: There are numerous examples of people being caught impersonating police officers and paramedics. Some of these people will go to great lengths to obtain surplus uniforms and vehicles. Most of those involved are fantasists, playing out an elaborate charade. You’d probably need to consult a psychologist or a psychiatrist to explain the exact motivation, but while a few are conmen, most seem to be trying to fulfil a role that is perceived by society as glamorous – probably to compensate for the fact that their own lives are mundane. Most such impersonators gravitate towards areas where those concerned have a degree of power and authority, often a profession – the military is another example – where a uniform is worn. My belief is that some of these characters may gravitate towards ufology. One occasionally sees dark suited characters at UFO conferences (real government agents wouldn’t be so obvious!) or hears reports of socalled ‘Men in Black’ visiting UFO witnesses. My belief is that these people could be impersonators intrigued by the glamour of being perceived to be a real-life government UFO investigator. CP: You are now travelling the world as a freelance writer and presenter along with other prominent media work and are now accepted as a reliant ambassador for British and global ufology. This is quite a dramatic change in the acceptance of Nick Pope as a UFO researcher. Could this change be related to you leaving your tour of duty at the Mod? and do you really believe that the Mod have no current interest in UFO`s since the demise of the UFO desk?
NP: From a purely practical point of view, when I left the MoD in 2006 I was able to devote more time to television work, freelance journalism and public speaking. Before I left, such activities had to be conducted in parallel with my MoD work and government work, of course, had to come first. While MoD axed the UFO project at the end of 2009, I have no doubt that some sightings are still being looked at. If a pilot sees and reports something unusual, or if an air traffic controller sees something unusual on radar, I would find it inconceivable if the chain of command didn’t investigate. However, this would be done on an ad hoc basis, outside the scope of any formally-constituted UFO study. Additionally, mindful of FOI, MoD would be extremely careful to avoid using the phrase ‘UFO’ and would probably use UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon) or ‘uncorrelated target’. CP: Regarding your MoD work on UFOs, was there any official angle on the UFOs having a supernatural connection?, nuts and bolts structured craft? Or possible living entities? NP: MoD was open-minded about the possibilities, but took no position on these issues and their possible relationship with the UFO phenomenon. Investigations couldn’t be conclusion-led, so while different people had different beliefs, any investigation simply had to examine the facts and go where the data led. CP: What are your current thoughts on the potential origin or form regarding UFOs? NP: I don’t know. Some sightings certainly seem to defy conventional explanation, but this doesn’t prove they’re extraterrestrial in origin. Unknown means unknown. CP: You have been part of the International UFO Disclosure project for quite a few years. Can you give some background on its successful ufological impact in the media and what is planned for the future regarding any new whistleblowers coming forward within the project? NP: I’m not a member of any UFO group or organisation. I gave Dr Steven Greer a statement about my MoD work, which I was happy for him to use as part of his Disclosure Project initiative. More recently I’ve given a statement to the Coalition for Freedom of Information. I don’t know what the future will bring and as I said earlier, I’m not a whistleblower (and would never endorse the unauthorised release of classified information). It will be interesting to see whether any UFO-related documents turn up on Wikileaks. If such documents exist, it’s a little surprising they haven’t yet come to light. CP: You feature regularly on major networks such as Fox News, CNN etc, yet the most crucial ufological news event must surely be the UFO secrecy issues on 'The Larry King Show'. In the UK, we can only find these heated debates on YouTube, so we are deprived of actually seeing Nick Pope dishing it out to the skeptics and taking on the sometimes sarcastic and pompous newsreaders. Ironically, you seem to have less challenging UFO discussions from within the UK, such as you commenting on a UFO story in 'The Sun' newspaper, that is sometimes not entirely shrouded in 'ufological mystery' to put it politely. Can you explain the polarity between the groundbreaking media coverage and the mundane? NP: I appeared on Larry King Live two or maybe three times. It was refreshing and rare to have a major talk show host genuinely interested in the subject and powerful enough in the industry to say “I think we’ll do another UFO programme”. I do a lot of UK shows too, but usually I’ll be the only guest in a news feature or on a chat show, so the debate format you mention isn’t something I do that often. But there’s plenty of mainstream media coverage and within the last couple of weeks I filmed a feature on Rendlesham Forest for the ITV show Daybreak, and took part in a Blue Peter special on UFOs and alien life. As for the polarity, the media exist both to inform and to entertain. And it’s a business. So like any business, you tailor the output to the market. As an example, I write for a wide range of national daily newspapers, but I write in a very different style in The Times than I would in The Sun. It’s the same with TV and radio. Style and content are very different in, say, children’s TV, late night radio, news features and chat shows. Each has its own rules. To give one amusing example, I recently pre-recorded a children’s TV show where in the course of a discussion about different sorts of UFOs, I was asked not to use the phrase cigar-shaped object, as it might be perceived as a smoking reference! CP: The Rendlesham forest UFO incident took place during the Christmas period of 1980 and is now regarded as the British Roswell. Some debunkers are breathlessly stating that the US serviceman at the RAF Bentwaters base had mistaken the light of the Orford Ness lighthouse as a triangular or diamond shaped UFO craft seen on three consecutive nights. Now considering that these servicemen were based at RAF Bentwaters for many months at a time, and that the lighthouse has been a prominent landmark since 1792, then surely the US servicemen would be familiar with its existence and not be fooled by any strange visual effect? Can you provide any updates or revelations regarding the famous Rendlesham UFO case and highlight the crucial work on this UFO incident by the late and greatly missed Georgina Bruni'. NP: The 30th anniversary of the Rendlesham Forest incident is going to place the case back into the public and media spotlight. Issue 3 of UFO Matrix magazine is going to contain several articles on the case. BBC Radio Suffolk are planning an evening of coverage and two of the original witnesses (John Burroughs and Jim Penniston) going to give a talk on the case on 28th December, before heading out into the forest
to take people on the route they followed on that fateful night. I’ve never been convinced by the lighthouse theory. I’ve filmed in Rendlesham Forest on several occasions and in those locations where it’s visible at all, the lighthouse is a tiny pinprick of light on the distant horizon. Georgina Bruni made a major contribution to our understanding of this case, tracking down numerous MoD documents on the subject and locating and interviewing witnesses who had not spoken out before. Her book on the subject, You Can’t Tell The People, is the best book on the incident. Her tenacity was legendary and Charles Halt told me a few weeks ago that being interviewed by Georgina was like being quizzed by the OSI. She would have appreciated the remark! CP: We are now seeing a steady growth in UFO related coverage in the worldwide media. Buzz Aldrin has stated on US television, that we should attempt to travel to Mars and disclosed that there is a structure in monolith form on the Martian moon of Phobos. US scientist Michio Kaku has stated on the major TV networks, that NASA will most likely find earth like planets in 2011 with evidence of alien life forms. How do you see UFO disclosure unfolding in the future? NP: I don’t think Buzz Aldrin was implying the ‘monolith’ was artificial, simply that it was an interesting structure and the sort of thing that makes a space programme worthwhile in terms of our quest for knowledge. I’m not sure about UFO disclosure, but in 2010 I attended both Royal Society meetings on the scientific and societal consequences of detecting extraterrestrial life. Of course, they’re talking about scenarios such as the SETI programme detecting a signal, not about UFOs, as such. However, many of the issues are the same (Would there be panic? What effect would this have on religion?) and it’s encouraging that such questions are now being asked by the scientific mainstream. CP: What are you currently working on ... if you wish to divulge... NP: I’m working on a wide range of projects, on subjects ranging from the unexplained and conspiracy theories, through to fringe science, space and sci-fi. Projects include work with production companies pitching or actively making documentaries, through to development work on screenwriting projects. And of course I continue to write as a freelance journalist for various newspapers and magazines, as well as acting as a pundit on various TV and radio shows. It’s a busy, varied and interesting life… CP: Thanks Nick!
