EDITORIAL Madness and Demonic Possession: Dear All, yet another issue to stir your thought processes, but first: demonic possession is a genuinely terrifying proposition as much for the observer as the possessed. It can, apparently, be caused by indulging in acts and practises that are considered likely to open one up to the invisible evil forces that constantly prowl our world seeking to cause us harm. Unfortunately, as we progress ever further into a brash and largely secular and techno‐ logic age, possession (or any other manifestation of the paranormal) is continually downgraded to either overheated imagination, or anything else other than what it is. There is an element of truth in this, because in days long past madness was automatically equated with possession by evil spirits and those afflicted either locked away until they either got better of their own voli‐ tion or they simply died. Nowadays the insane are treated with medications of various sorts until they can once again assimilate into society, or if sufficiently ill are locked away for their own (and societies) safety. Yet even now there are those whose affliction has no physical or mental cause and can only be ‘treated’ by exorcism. The words used are traditional and often gathered from ancient texts, the Rituale Romanum is a case in point, and it often works…WHY? Perhaps evil can be defeated by an appropriate conjuration and in this case prayers make an effective substitute for spells. This is an example of the power of words, so the next time you wish someone was dead; choose your words very carefully indeed, because you might just get what you want.

It’s difficult trying to understand why cer‐ tain types of paranormal activity occurs around some individuals, and yet not oth‐ ers. It’s even harder trying to make sense of the numerous types of psychokinetic dis‐ plays put on during poltergeist outbreaks, or at least it used to be. It is my current belief that if one is willing to take the time and dig deep enough into such cases, look‐ ing into environmental variables, the medi‐ cal backgrounds of the individuals involved, their psychological backgrounds as well as the psychodynamics of the people affected, distinct p a t t e r n s emerge, which are abso‐ lutely fascinating. Patterns which explain why specific types of psychokinetic events occur to certain people, while different ones happen to others. Pat‐ terns which strongly suggest that these sup‐ posedly random psy‐ chokinetic acts are noth‐ ing of the kind. In reality, evidence indi‐ cates they are carefully orchestrated deep within the conscious‐ ness minds of their gen‐ erators or agents, a.k.a. poltergeist agents. While these events are not consciously mediated, they are deliber‐ ate acts of the subconscious or unconscious acting out upon the immediate environ‐ ment. After forty‐four years of work, a fascinating longitudinal pattern has emerged strongly suggesting what’s underlying the nature of most, if not all, poltergeists cases. To put it very simply, WE ARE. Unfortunately for Reality Television, there are no demons, entities or monsters, just the externaliza‐ tion of consciousness of everyday living people. Well, not everyday living people? These special people are uniquely, neuro‐ logically wired so that their body is highly reactive to forces most of us simply ig‐ nore. The majority of the human popula‐ tion is highly insensitive to these energies, which is why certain types of paranormal activity is so rarely experienced. Of course, if you watch any of the fraudulent paranor‐ mal “un‐reality” shows, you might think otherwise?

Out of the more than four thousand cases from my own files, there are many that clearly exemplify this theory, but I’ll focus on only three here. Two of the three cases are also the best known of my case files as they’ve received the greatest media at‐ tention. They are: The Entity case and the San Pedro case, while the third case is chapter seven “An Irreplaceable Loss: The Life and Death of a Poltergeist Agent” of my book Aliens Above, Ghosts Below: Explorations of the Unknown.

As most are somewhat familiar with The Entity and San Pedro cases, let me begin with the case that has received absolutely no publicity whatsoever, and that’s the one that affected the lives of Lisa McIntosh, Barry Conrad and myself from 2001 through July of 2006. This was the last chapter I added to my book before it was published, but not the final chapter. Lisa McIntosh and Barry Conrad 03

What began as Lisa informing Conrad upon meeting him online that she moved from one haunted house to another while grow‐ ing up, turned into the Mount Everest of poltergeist cases, that was very well chronicled due to the logging of events by Conrad and myself. What was thought to be just another fascinating RSPK outbreak, resulted in a very steep learning curve in terms of our understanding of the nature of this incredible phenomenon. Lisa moved into Barry’s house from her home in North Carolina in early sum‐ mer of 2001 and she accompanied us out on her first case in mid‐October of that same year. The case was a very minor one as well as being quite old and dormant. While our instruments detected rather high geomag‐ netic and electromag‐ netic fields, we did not encounter any phenomena at all. This is quite the norm in such investigations. However, the very next day, poltergeist activity began tran‐ spiring around Lisa and Barry, and before it all ended some five years later, they had experienced many occurrences. Between mid‐October 2001 and July of 2006, there were probably several thousand separate RSPK events; many were redundant, but nevertheless intense. One of the more violent events occurred when Barry was away on a late shoot and Lisa was preparing for bed. As she was beginning to settle under the covers, Barry’s dog Beau, a gift from one of his many girlfriends, began to leap towards the bed to ensure her place next to Lisa. This dog was very territorial and possessive of her space that Lisa’s presence had now invaded. Although Lisa had a great love of animals, this large, pesky canine was noth‐ ing more than a constant reminder of Barry’s last squeeze. Put simply, she abso‐ lutely despised that dog for that one sim‐ ple reason. No great surprise? In keeping with Beau’s territoriality, she leaped to‐ wards the bed not knowing that she was about to get a rude awakening as to just

Hazardous Haunting ‐ The Enemy Within: By Dr. Barry Taff

how potent some human minds really are. Suddenly, something invisible to the eye, abruptly grabbed Beau in mid jump, mo‐ mentarily suspending the animal in the air. This was immediately followed by Beau being violently flung backwards away from the bed, into the wall just below the win‐ dows in the bedroom. Had the dog’s trajec‐ tory been slightly just slightly higher, she would have flown out the second story bedroom window to her death below. Lisa let out a very loud scream and was way too frightened to even move, as there had al‐ ready been numerous poltergeist incidents in the house preceding this event. She tried calling Barry, but as he was working, his cell phone was turned off and could not be reached. Beau was stunned into semi‐consciousness from hitting the wall and laid there quietly for about ten seconds. Upon coming it her senses, Beau hunkered down and crawled very rapidly out of the room, never again to enter Barry’s main bedroom. As shocking as this event was, it really made a great sense in that what we see here is a direct inter‐ vention on the part of Lisa’s subconscious mind, via psycho kinesis, acting out within her new home (Conrad’s house), to protect her own territory. But wait, there’s much more to this fascinating young lady named Lisa. Lisa’s health became somewhat problem‐ atic in that her whole body seemed to ache most of the time even though she was not even forty years old. But as she did not have any health insurance, she simply be‐ gan consuming vast quantities of over‐the‐ counter pain pills like Aleve, Tylenol, etc. Initially, this appeared to help, but she seemed to have a chronic, low grade fever and as she had an intense dislike of physi‐ cians, she initially did not even desire to be properly diagnosed. Some months later, after numerous polter‐ geist events like doors violently opening and closing, disembodied voices, the sounds of large explosions, telephones incessantly ringing with no caller at the other end, fierce growling voices heard over the phone lines, and even luminous anoma‐ lies, the escalating events took a rather odd and ominous turn. While Lisa and Barry were watching TV early one evening in his living room, they heard a disturbance in the kitchen. Both they and the dog got up to investigate unusual noise. As they entered the dinning room on the way to the kitchen area they observed a really bizarre apparition before them. In fact, this apparition was so distinct and extraordinary that I wouldn’t have even believed it had it come from someone other than Barry and Lisa. There before them was a gigantic, twisting, convoluted 3‐D image of the letter “M”, in a dirty, dark brown/

black shade of color. What the hell? As Lisa and Barry stood there in utter amaze‐ ment, this mind‐boggling apparition con‐ tinued its twisting motions, with no appar‐ ent sound, aside form that of the dog that was growling at it as it hunched down into an attack posture. Suddenly, the dog lets out a yelp, and runs away with it’s tail between it’s legs. Then, just as suddenly as it appeared, it was gone. Barry and Lisa looked at each other wondering what they’ve just wit‐ nessed. They immediately called me to discuss it. I must say, that this is perhaps the most peculiar apparition I’ve ever heard about, period. What in the world does “M” mean, other than Lisa’s last name, McIntosh. But that’s way too obvi‐ ous to be relevant. Twenty three months later though, the letter “M” became very relevant to both Lisa and Barry, in a way no one could have ever predicted. Lisa finally consented to see a physician regarding her chronic aches and pains. After an exhaustive battery of tests, the answer to Lisa’s malaise was finally known. She’s diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma (MM), and insidious and un‐ treatable form of bone cancer (cancer of plasma cells) that usually only afflicts the elderly. As depressing as her diagnosis was, what’s even more astounding is the “M” relevance here to the apparition her and Barry witnessed some two years ear‐ lier. Was it only a coincidence that the appari‐ tion they saw was in the form of the letter “M“, or was Lisa’s subconscious mind acting out within her immediate environ‐ ment trying to communicate what was really going on within her body at the time? As neither Lisa or Barry had ever heard of this illness, which was normal as they weren’t physicians, there was no direct way that such information could have been conveyed to either of them. In my professional opinion, this is matter is so far beyond the point of it being a coin‐ cidence, that it’s truly astounding. Unfor‐ tunately, Lisa lost her battle to cancer on July of 2006, and shortly thereafter, all the psychokinetic episodes within Barry’s house ceased. Of course they did, the biological genera‐ tor or agent was now gone. For a far more detailed account of this case, read chapter seven of my book. The next case that displayed the same type of overtly obvious psychokinetic link was the San Pedro case (1989‐1993) with Jackie Hernandez. The most blatant and direct events in this fascinating case are the numerous occasions where the RSPK directly attacked Jeff Wheatcraft. On the very first night of our visit in August of 04

1989, Jeff’s camera was violently pulled from his hands as attempted to shoot some photos in the attic of Jackie’s little bungalow on 11th Street in San Pedro. Jeff’s reaction is pure fear and some disbe‐ lief, as he was somewhat of a skeptic when it came to paranormal matters, but the worse was ahead. On September 4th, while Jeff was exploring the attic once again, this time with Gary Beihm (a friend of Conrad’s), something suddenly wrapped a clothesline cord around Jeff’s neck and tried to hang him, by lifting his body over a bolt in one of the many rafters. Jeff let out a loud yell as this event transpired. Had Gary not been in the attic with Jeff at that moment, there’s a real good chanced that Jeff would have died of strangulation by that clothesline.

Jeff Wheatcraft being hung in San Pedro case, 9/4/89 Can you imagine the legal complications facing Barry Conrad, Gary Beihm and Jackie Hernandez if Jeff would have died then and there? How could you possibly defend someone in a case like this? Jeff was left with a serious rope burn in his neck that’s clearly visible as he descends from the attic after the attack. Needless to say, Jeff is shocked and for good reason, and backs away from helping us on this case, but not totally. He’s about to learn what a bad judgment call that was. Months later Jackie finally left San Pedro and moved up to a trailer park in Weldon, CA near Bakersfield. Barry and Jeff, travelled three hundred miles north to visit Jackie as she was still having poltergeist events around her. Yours truly was sidelined for a while as my father had suffered a heart attack and my mother required my assistance at many levels. While at Jackie’s new home, they encountered numerous RSPK events that culminated in yet another, almost lethal attack on Jeff Wheatcraft.

Jeff Wheatcraft again, San Pedro, 1989.

Hazardous Haunting ‐ The Enemy Within: By Dr. Barry Taff

While playing with a Ouija Board in Jackie’s home, Barry, Jeff, Jackie and several others experiencing table shaking, inexplicable cold winds from nowhere and some rather obscure messages from the board. How‐ ever, they all paled compared to what was about to occur. Suddenly, Jeff and his chair were levitated up into the air, with the chair falling away while he continued in his upward arc of movement until he was vio‐ lently slammed into the meeting of the ceiling and wall. Jeff’s limp, unconscious body soon hit the floor. Everyone assumed he was dead. Fortunately, they were wrong. Jeff described a sensation of his diaphragm being compressed and sensing a vertical lifting motion which was soon followed by his back and head being slammed into the wall and ceiling. He woke up on the floor, not really knowing what had just happened to him. What makes these recurring attacks on Jeff relevant in this discussion is how they are linked directly backed to Jackie Hernandez’s state‐of‐mind at the time. Jackie grew very fond of Barry Conrad, and why not; he was affable, tall, handsome with blue eyes and has come to Jackie’s aid in her time of need. Jackie became very attached to Barry emotionally as he was sort of her rescuer and savior, although she misinterpreted his help as a romantic over‐ ture to a single mother, as he very flirta‐ tious. But there was one real problem with Barry as far as Jackie was concerned and it had little to do with Barry himself. The problem for Jackie was that every time Barry was at her home, Jeff was with him, acting as a wedge or impedance to her growing closer to Barry, at least a far as Jackie was concerned. Jackie attempted to correct this “problem” the only way she could….to unleash her RSPK onto Jeff. Thus, it’s no coincidence that Jeff was re‐ peatedly attacked while in Jackie’s presence by invisible forces as Jackie was doing eve‐ rything within her “power” to assure that Jeff no longer returned to her home with Barry again, and it came pretty damn close to succeeding. At one point during an inter‐ view with the magazine show Hard Copy in 1993, I asked Jackie on camera about my suspicions regarding her feelings about Jeff. Jackie readily acknowledged and ad‐ mitted that my thinking on this matter was entirely correct. However, the producer of this particular story didn’t quite understand what I was referring to here with Jackie, which prompted her to ask me a question: “So you mean that Jackie tells the ghost what to do and the ghost does it, right?” WRONG! No matter how hard I tried to get this producer to understand my theory here, she couldn’t grasp what I was say‐ ing. And needless to say, they edited out this entire aspect of the show as it didn’t support their contention that it was all due to a ghost and was far too complex for most viewers to comprehend.

There were other major indicators and evidence of Jackie being a blatant polter‐ geist agent and they are discussed in de‐ tail within chapter three of my book and how the localized environment played into the entire case and beyond. To learn more about how and why Jackie suddenly developed this psychokinetic proclivity, read my book or another blog here “Looking A Gift Ghost in the Mouth: The Science of Poltergeists”. It no coincidence that as new tenants eventually moved into, and soon out of, Jackie’s 11th street San Pedro home, many also had encoun‐ ters with poltergeist activity. Saving the best known of my cases for the last, we’re now talking about the The Entity case from the middle 1970’s. In a nutshell, Doris Bither claimed to have been repeatedly raped by ghosts, where two small one would hold her down while the large, third one assaulted her. As you’ll read in my book, Doris was sub‐ jected to frequently recurring episodes of belligerent poltergeist activity, the zenith of which were the alleged rapes and the appearance of the apparition all twenty‐ five of us collectively observed.

Doris Bither framed by an arc of light in The Entity case, Summer 1974 Why alleged you might ask? Because we could not prove or disprove that such events ever really occurred as they hap‐ pened long before we met her in August of 1974. One cannot prove a negative, only a positive. What’s particularly fasci‐ nating about The Entity case is that Doris had a family consisting of three sons and one daughter. There was one older, lar‐ ger, teenage son, while the other sons were somewhat younger and smaller. I think you can figure out where I’m going with this, can’t you? It’s not very difficult to see the Oedipal correlations here, as Doris was a very sexually driven woman, who very likely possessed strong sublimi‐ nal, libidinous fantasies about her three boys, especially when binge drinking, which, for her, was quite common. These were strong, subconscious projec‐ tions from Doris who some might say was sexually insatiable, and it’s more likely than not that she deeply desired her three young, strong, vibrant sons to please her in ways she could only dream about. Such an intense incestuous relationship would 05

prove to Doris troubled mind that she’s indeed wanted and needed by the men closest to her, her three sons. Given the background Doris grew up in, where she was intensely rejected and eventually dis‐ inherited by her family at a very young age, she was in desperate need of attention and physical love from men at every level. The relationship between Doris and her children was extremely chaotic and dys‐ functional to say the least. Such feelings are not that uncommon in society, while the psychokinetic acting out of Doris’s sexual fantasies is very uncommon. If you know anything about clinical psychology and/or psychoanalysis, you’ll understand and appreciate what I’m speaking about here. In science there’s something called Occam’s Razor, which basically means that all things being equal, you always go with the simplest explanation. In these extraor‐ dinary cases, the evidence strongly sug‐ gests the causal agent was anything other than a discarnate personality. In a peculiar sort of way, these scenarios are somewhat reminiscent of “Monsters From The Id” as depicted in the 1956 mo‐ tion picture Forbidden Planet, a loose ad‐ aptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, wherein the indigenous alien residents (the Krell) of a planet within a distant star system developed technology that could translate their thoughts and whims into energy and matter that they then could project anywhere on the planet. Only later did the Krell discover that their uncon‐ scious whims, wants, needs and fears were guiding the process which eventually led to their own destruction. Does this science fiction plot seem strangely familiar? What’s being theoretically postulated here regarding humanly mediated psycho‐ kinesis is pretty much the same as in For‐ bidden Planet with one glaring exception; we don’t have the technology to create such incredible effects. Although in the real world, it appears as if the relationships between certain individuals and their physical environment may serve as a poor man’s substitute. Then again, given our predilection for violence maybe it’s a good thing that we do not possess such ad‐ vanced psychotronic technology? Remem‐ ber, real science is where your theory con‐ forms to your data, not the reverse where you only seek data that supports your the‐ ory, that’s quackery. What do you think? Dr. Barry E. The Scottish UFO & Paranormal Conference ‐ A Report: By Malcolm Robinson

Scotland as a nation rarely sees a major UFO & Paranormal conference and other than the Scottish Paranormal Festival which was held in the town of Stirling last year (2014) there has been little in the way of public information on those weird and won‐ derful subjects. That all changed in June this year where Scotland’s first major UFO & Paranormal Conference was held in Edin‐ burgh. The idea came from Alyson Dunlop who has taken over the running of Strange Phenomena Investigations Scotland and posed the question to SPI Founder Malcolm Robinson. Malcolm was quick to agree and in conjunction with Ron Halliday, another prolific Scottish UFO& Paranormal Investi‐ gator and founder of Scottish Earth Myster‐ ies Research group., the idea soon became reality and it was all systems go for a con‐ ference in Edinburgh. With any conference it is always a head‐ ache on who to ask and have along, as there are so many good and talented speakers here in the U.K. but after much debate the conference organisers whittled it down to nine speakers. The venue was the Pleasance Theatre which is part of Edin‐ burgh University and at £10 a ticket, this was the cheapest UFO or Paranormal one day conference with nine guest speakers held anywhere in the U.K. After a few tech‐ nical issues at the start of the day, compere for the day the ever smiling and ever won‐ derful Councillor Billy Buchanan of Bonny‐ bridge UFO fame, introduced to the stage Brian Allan (Brian is the editor of Phenom‐ ena Magazine which, incidentally, was also sponsoring the conference) Brian’s talk was, ‘Truth Lies and UFOlogy’ BRIAN ALLAN Brian Allan has written twelve books dealing with various aspects of the paranormal, magick, the occult and UFOlogy and has also produced scripts for several TV documen‐ tary programmes and has acted as a con‐ sultant for many more. Brian is still a dedi‐ cated and active ‘hands on’ paranormal and UFO investigator. He has made a study of certain esoteric aspects relating to Rosslyn Chapel and made his own contribution to the lore surrounding this unique building; he is also noted as the discoverer of the remarkable and mind‐altering sonic tone, ‘The Rosslyn Frequency’. Brian’s talk looked at the way in which, since the late 1940’s, various, mainly west‐ ern intelligence agencies, have ruthlessly and cynically exploited the subject of Ufol‐ ogy for their own dark ends, sometimes to the detriment of the public, but almost invariably to provide an effective cover for cutting edge developments in a range of

military and civilian aero‐space pro‐ grammes. Although making clear that he is absolutely convinced that we are regu‐ larly contacted and visited by non‐human beings and entities that do not originate in our version of reality, Brian’s talk was pretty controversial. It put a damper on those individuals who truly believed that all strange craft seen in the sky were of extraterrestrial origin and here they were being asked by Brian to take a look out of the box and realise that the American Government did fly strange aerial craft which, although exotic, were very much our own. Brian explained that these many of these craft, (the 1947 Kenneth Arnold sighting is a case in point) derived directly from the notorious 1945 intelligence gath‐ ering ‘Operation Paperclip’, gave rise to many false and misleading UFO reports, where people believed that they were looking at a genuine E.T. presence. Brian also spoke in some detail about the real function of ‘Die Glocke’ also called ‘The Nazi Bell’. He also demonstrated that many of the claims made about what was back‐engineered from the Roswell inci‐ dent were unfounded and were instead based on existing experimental Nazi tech‐ nology. This was a lecture that needed to be heard, because it showed people that things were not always what they seemed and not all so called ‘flying saucers’ were from outer space. NICK KYLE Next up was the former President of the Scottish Society for Psychical Re‐ search, Nick Kyle who gave an abso‐ lutely brilliant talk on the Scole Experi‐ ments of which, on some occasions, he was a part of. In Nick’s talk notes he stated that the Scole experi‐ ments were one of the most impressive examples of physical mediumship and afterlife communication. 'They took place in an old house in Norfolk with a variety of people taking part and witnessing a range of phenomenon. Nick Described the re‐ markable occasion on which a child from the spirit world sat on his knee. These séances provided photographic and video evidence, spirit materialisations, apports, levitation and orbs moving in and through the bodies of participants. Nick stated to the large audience that along with four companions they all witnessed the impos‐ sible twice at Scole and these experiences have changed his life. Nick went into great detail about what he saw and it was sim‐ ply mind blowing. Hearing evidence like this, confirms to this reviewer that there truly is a life after death. After Nick’s talk it was time for lunch and 10

the cafeteria was busy serving the large audience with an array of sandwiches and snacks. The lunch break also gave time for people to share their own UFO & Paranor‐ mal stories with each other and boy did I hear a few during the break. RON HALLIDAY After lunch it was time for researcher Ron Halliday to take to the stage with his talk, ‘UFOs, Past and Present. Blue Men, Fairy Abductions’, (Ron is the author of several books on the supernatural and related phenomena in‐ cluding 'UFO Scotland' and 'Famous Scots and the Supernatural)' Here Ron posed the question that of are we being visited by alien beings from a distant planet? Or are sightings of ‘flying saucers’ a glimpse into events in another dimension or parallel universe? Or could they be no more than figments of the collective imagination? Ron then went into the link between UFO sightings both past and current bringing in Scottish folk legends. There was something for everyone in this talk as Ron went on to discuss sightings of ‘Blue Men’ and balls of light seen over Scottish lochs. He also spoke about sightings of what’s been termed ‘Birdmen’, which had parallels with the Mothman sightings. Ron made com‐ parisons between ancient Scottish fairy abductions and today’s UFO abductions of which, on the surface, appeared quite similar which begged the question, do modern sightings of UFOs, comprise, as some suggest, no more than a 21st century update of ancient legends? Or a phenome‐ non that stretches back in time one with a common ancestry the ramifications of which we have really only recently begun to understand? So a fascinating talk and one which left many puzzling over the common threads that Ron spoke about. ALYSON DUNLOP Following on from Ron we had SPI’s Alyson Dunlop who spoke a b o u t ‘ C o m m u n i c a t i n g with Aliens’ or as she preferred to call it, ‘Phoning E.T.’ Alyson Dunlop is a paranormal and UFO investigator with SPI Scotland. She currently hosts her own show, The EDX‐Files (East Dunbartonshire Radio), which deals with the subject of the strange and mysterious. Alyson has also studied ancient religions and magic at the University of Glasgow, where she gradu‐ ated in classics. She is a healer, shaman and mystic, who founded the original

Glasgow University Pagan Society and Scot‐ witch E‐group, later Pagans of Scotland and Scotwitch. As a classicist, Alyson has written books and adapted a couple of ancient texts for stage. As a writer, she explores sci‐fi, fantasy and horror. As a hypnotherapist she specialises in fears and phobias, believing fear can be a feeding source for negative energies, as well as a block to our spiritual progression. Alyson's interest in the paranormal began at an early age, and she has had many strange experiences throughout her life. In fact, she has been described as a Profound Human Experiencer because her encoun‐ ters with the paranormal appear to be across the board: incubus attack, astral projection, The Hat Man, The Shrouded Figure, a Shadow Person, Shadow Spiders, precognitive visions, an angel, clairvoyance and healing gifts, and most recently tele‐ pathic communication with what may have been benevolent inter‐dimensional beings. Alyson believes we do not have to fear alien entities, that there is a better way forward and that we can experience communication with beings who wish to help and heal us. If we are open to it? In her talk Alyson ex‐ plained how to contact at E.T. presence through ancient shamanic methods show‐ ing that it is possible for people to interact and receive their knowledge and wisdom. Alyson’s talk with peppered with some truly fantastic visual power point slides, all which combine d to make this a most interesting talk. After each talk there was a 15 minute com‐ fort break which al‐ lowed people to re‐ charge their glass and have that lung chang‐ ing cigarette! Compere Billy Buchanan looked resplendent in his Scottish attire and knit‐ ted all the speakers together with his own brand of style and humour, (the perfect choice as a compere). EWAN IRVINE Following on from Ron was Edinburgh psychic medium Ewan Irvine who gave a talk about us humans, are we all psychic? Why are some people more psychic than others? Ewan Irvine is a Clairvoyant Medium work‐ ing in the UK and Ireland. As a child, Ewan experienced many strange happenings that could not be explained logically. It was only at the age of 19 that he began to realise that he had the ability of mediumship. Hav‐ ing developed these abilities with Porto‐ bello Spiritualist Church in Edinburgh, he became a regular demonstrator of

mediumship within the UK. In 2008 Ewan won the UK's Spiritual Connextions Open Platform Award. He has also worked with the paranormal and has used his medium‐ ship in both private and public locations. These have included Mary King’s Close, Edinburgh’s Ragged School, Edinburgh Vaults, Scooner Hotel Newcastle Keep and many more. Ewan has also appeared in a number of TV productions including Most Haunted Live and ITV’s Tough Gig. Articles have also included Edinburgh Evening News, Scotland Today, Psychic News and BBC Radio Scotland. In his talk Ewan spoke about the mechanics of psychic ability and mediumship, and how it is used in every‐ day life as well as giving proof of the after‐ life. Ewan stated to the audience that that many people have that feeling of a sixth sense, or a foretelling that some‐ thing is about to happen. Is this the psy‐ chic and if so, where does it come from? And how do we fine tune it? Ewan’s talk was fascinating and gave an insight into the workings of a psychic medium and mediumship. PETER McCUE Next up was Peter McCue with his talk entitled, ‘Dangerous Encounters and Dan‐ gerous Involvement.’ Peter McCue is a former clinical psy‐ chologist. He has a Ph.D., from the University of Glasgow, awarded for a thesis on hypnosis. His in‐ terest in anomalous phenomena goes back decades, and he’s written numerous articles on these subjects. Peter is the author of a book, published in 2012, enti‐ tled ‘Zones of Strangeness: An Examina‐ tion of Paranormal and UFO Hot Spots’. He believes that paranormal phenomena occur, and that many UFO experiences are genuinely anomalous. He contends that if we want to obtain a comprehensive un‐ derstanding of ourselves and the nature of reality, these enigmatic phenomena can’t be ignored. Peter explained to the audience that some people believe that UFOs are spaceships, operated by extraterrestrials with a friendly disposition towards the human race. However, UFO encounters, whatever their nature, may result in injury or death. In some instances, this may be purely accidental. But other cases suggest delib‐ erate targeting. The late Bob Pratt cites many such cases, from Brazil, in his 1996 book ‘UFO Danger Zone’. Peter told the October 1978 story of pilot Frederick Valentich who disappeared after report‐ ing, by radio, the close proximity of a UFO while he was flying over the Bass Strait, near the Australian mainland. 11

Peter went on to relate another incident that of a small plane that disappeared in June 1980 on a flight from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico. A pilot and stu‐ dent pilot were on board. The pilot started sending ‘Mayday’ calls, which weren’t received by the control facility at San Juan International Airport, Puerto Rico. But a Madrid‐bound airliner acted as a link with San Juan. The transmis‐ sions from the stricken plane indicated that its occupants were lost, and that a strange object was making them lose course. After about three minutes, there were no further radio communications from the small plane. Subsequent attempts to locate it were unsuccessful. Peter also went into UFO conspiracies and cover ups and said that one of the reasons for the JFK assassination was a fear, on the part of some, that Kennedy was going to reveal the truth about the UFO phenomenon to the US public. Peter also went into cattle mutilations and stated that UFOs can also be a threat to non‐human animals. For example, strange lights or UFOs have sometimes been spot‐ ted around the time of cattle mutilations, providing fodder for the theory of alien involvement. But other cases are sugges‐ tive of human agency. For instance, muti‐ lated animals have been found with gun‐ shot wounds; and on many occasions, heli‐ copters have been seen around the time of mutilations. However, if there’s a paranor‐ mal aspect to some cases of animal mutila‐ tion, it’s possible that witnesses’ percep‐ tions have been manipulated, and that the craft haven’t been real helicopters. This was all fascinating stuff lapped up by the large audience. JAMES WELSH Next to take the stage was James Welsh whose talk was, ‘Exposing a UFO Cover Up’ James Welsh is the author of Cor‐ roborating Evidence the UFO investigation of the millennium. Born and raised in Glas‐ gow, James is a multiple event UFO eyewit‐ ness who experienced an intense series of UFO encounters during December 1999. After submitting an official UFO report to Glasgow ATC on December 15th 1999, he later received a written response from the British Ministry of Defence dismissing his report. After making further enquiries he was informed that there was ‘no corrobo‐ rating evidence’ to suggest the airspace had been breached. This reply was highly inaccurate as he had personally observed RAF Tornado jets in pursuit of these UFOs, both before and after the official report was submitted. So stories of a UFO cover‐

up just got personal. In 2001 he contacted UFO researchers Graham Birdsall and Ron Halliday and was instructed to get a written account down on paper. It was just the first small step of a very long journey. After set‐ ting up a meeting with all of the other eye‐ witnesses to his sightings and Ron Halliday in February 2002 James asked for Ron’s advice on what to do next. Ron’s advice was clean cut. Keep researching and keep writ‐ ing. After a decade of intensive research, on August 31st 2012 he personally went on to make an incredible series of discoveries while looking into the STS103 Hubble mis‐ sion photographs which were taken during the redeployment of the space telescope on December 25th 1999. What he discov‐ ered couldn’t be easily dismissed as ‘ice crystals’ of ‘space debris’ and left NASA with a lot of explaining to do. James gave a wonderful talk full of incredible power point slides to illustrate his sightings, all of which proved a big hit by the audience. MALCOLM ROBINSON & ALIEN BILL ROOKE All of the speakers so far at the conference had been diverse and fascinating, with their lectures covering many different facets of the weird and the wonder‐ ful and closing the con‐ ference was SPI foun‐ der Malcolm Robinson who was sharing the stage with the ever interesting Bill Rooke (or Alien Bill as he pre‐ fers to be known) Mal‐ colm took the stage first with a highly con‐ troversial talk entitled, ‘Was 9‐11 An Inside Job’, where he discussed the many inconsis‐ tencies with the evidence surrounding one of the world’s worst ever tragedies. Mal‐ colm asked the audience the question, was 9‐11 an inside job conducted and orches‐ trated by the American Government as an excuse to fight terrorism throughout the world whilst killing its own citizens to allow them an excuse to do so? Malcolm showed many power point slides along with witness testimony which clearly showed that all was not quite what it seemed. Building 7 was not struck by an aircraft and had minimal fires on a few floors, yet it too fell down into its own footprint similar to a controlled demolition explosion. Malcolm showed slides of girders cleanly cut at a 45 degree angle of which it was surmised that this showed where detonation charges had been placed to shear off the girders which allowed the Twin Towers to slide down in a controlled fashion. Malcolm presented and showed the many inconsistencies with the official 9‐11 report which he stated was a complete whitewash. He spoke about the so called plane crash at the Pentagon and

the Shanksville crash site both of which had no bodies and no plane wreckage. Malcolm asked the audience to please look at the data themselves and search for the truth because quite clearly the official version of events did not tie in with many witness testimonies. Following on from Malcolm was Alien Bill Rooke a friend of Malcolm’s and who was speaking to an audience for the very first time. Malcolm was tasked to work Bill’s slides which consisted of numerous strange and bi‐ zarre Orbs and shafts of light. But it was Alien Bill’s Fairy Photograph that most people had stayed back to see. Here Bill showed a bizarre photograph which ap‐ peared to show what can only be termed as a fairy in flight near the Edward Confes‐ sor Church in York England. Both Malcolm and Bill went on to inform the audience that they had sent the photo to many insectologists both here and Europe ask‐ ing their opinion of what the photo might show. Surprisingly all had different views. Some felt that it showed a clear wing moth whilst others thought it showed a midge. None of them were prepared to admit to it being anything other than a normal ‘bug’! Come what may, the ‘fairy photograph’ as it’s now been called is certainly a classic in the annals of strange phenomenon and for the moment, re‐ mains unexplained. THE CLOSE OF THE CONFERENCE All too soon the day came to an end and Councillor Billy Buchanan brought the proceedings to a close. It had been some day. A day in which the feedback from the assembled crowd told the organisers that they truly enjoyed what they had seen and heard, praise indeed for several months’ hard work. Much praise however should also go to the stewards (Gregg McDonnell, Marie Adens, and Janet Galla‐ gher), who did an absolutely marvellous job and without whom this day would not have gone so well. Lessons were learned by the conference organisers for future conferences and being our first confer‐ ence we now know the do’s and don’ts for the future. Conferences such as these help build relationships with like minded people and Facebook played a big part in letting people from all over the world (not just Scotland) know that this event was occurring. It was great to see a number of people that I personally (Malcolm Robin‐ son) have been communicating with on Facebook over the years, attend this event. Needless to say many strange UFO & Paranormal stories were exchanged by members of the audience to the confer‐ ence organisers which is always a bonus. 2016 CONFERENCE As this conference was a huge success, organisers Malcolm Robinson, Ron 12

Halliday and Alyson Dunlop have decided to hold another conference next year (2016) at the debating chambers of Glas‐ gow University on on 25th June 2016 tick‐ ets are held at the same price, that of £10:00 and the speakers lined up are Larry Warren, Peter Robbins, Charmaine Fraser, Gordon Rutter, Roland Watson, Malcolm Robinson, Ron Halliday, and Alyson Dunlop... SUMMING UP BY THE CONFERENCE ORGANIS‐ ERS. Malcolm Robinson At the end of the day, staging conferences such as this is purely to allow the general public to understand that the world in which we live in is far more stranger than we can ever imagine and that we have still so much to learn not only about ourselves, but our place in the cosmos. For me, the conference was a total success and provided an opportunity for people to meet and share in the strange and bizarre world that is the paranormal and I look forward to next year’s event. Ron Halliday: 'I was delighted that after many years we had a conference with a Scottish focus but which also integrated the Scottish experience within the world‐wide phenomena which is the supernatu‐ ral. Every speaker contributed magnificently and demonstrated that much thought had gone into the preparation and delivery of each talk. I en‐ joyed every one and gained new insights into this fascinating area. Thanks too to all those who asked questions which led to some lively debate! It was great to see such a good turnout which exceeded my own expectations. My co‐ organisers Alyson Dunlop and Malcolm Robin‐ son did a great job and despite the inevitable and unexpected problems which arose we didn't fall out once! Finally well done to Billy Buchanan and the stewards and to my wife Evelyn who spent most of the day at the entrance selling tickets and being generally helpful! Look for‐ ward to the same terrific event in Glasgow next year.' Alyson Dunlop: Summing up: It was a both a pleasure and a privilege to be involved with this conference from beginning to end. Malcolm and Ron are fantastic to work with, and we all brought our various skills to the table, as did all the speakers and stewards. It was all about team work from day one. What made the conference so success‐ ful was that there really was something there for everyone, and anybody drawn to any aspect of ufology or the paranormal went home even more educated and armed with various facts to think about. Many people reported not knowing about certain subjects, but finding the informa‐ tion fascinating as they went off to look into it some more. For me that was the whole point of it, i.e. that people went home knowing more than they did when they came in with. All the speakers had various different approaches too. There was research, investigation, academia, personal experience, spirituality, and mysticism ‐ I don't think we missed out any aspect of our subjects, and if we did we'll make up for it next time! Yes, indeed. This was a well‐rounded event, and we endeavour to leave no stone unturned in any of our future conferences. See you there next year! It's going to be awesome!

In my continuing quest to understand our UFO history, I purchased a copy of Major Donald Keyhoe’s 1974 book entitled, “Aliens from Space”. The first page of this book reads, “This book was written in defiance of the U.S. Air Force and CIA”. Keyhoe was a Marine Corp aviator and co‐founder of NICAP. In 1958, during a CBS interview, Keyhoe stated that UFOs were under intelligent control and CBS stopped the show and pulled the live feed. Keyhoe was truly the most determined and influential Ufologist of his time period. Here is a compilation of quotes from Keyhoe’s last book, “Aliens from Space”: 15

Aliens from Space: By John Ventre

“The Air Force has abundant proof of the reality of UFOs, but believes it is best for the country to deny their existence.” The first fatal UFO chase involved Captain Tho‐ mas Mantell in 1948. On August 5 1948, the Air Force “Estimate of the Situation” was delivered to General Vandenberg who re‐ jected it because it would cause a stam‐ pede. How could we convince the public they weren’t hostile? Project Sign, which concluded that UFOs were real, was re‐ named Project Grudge and every UFO re‐ port was debunked by the Air Force. In 1954, commercial pilots were subject to the same espionage laws as military pilots that reported UFOs. In 1958, we launched bombers against Rus‐ sia more than once due to misidentified UFOs. The AF (Air Force) then paid $523,000 to Colorado University in 1966 to conduct an unbiased probe of UFOs. The project leader, Dr Condon, immediately stated that there was nothing to UFOs and that the AF was wasting its time. He said teachers should not accept book reports from students on UFOs and if they did they should be let go from their profession. His project administrator, Robert Low, then issued a memo describing how to trick the public into believing that they really were investigating UFOs. The hope was that if President Nixon were elected, he would challenge the Condon conclusions since Nixon was a member of the House Commit‐ tee on Un‐American Activities that chal‐ lenged Condon’s security clearance.” Keyhoe goes on to name names and dates of the best UFO reports from his time pe‐ riod including the classified AF Project 10 report, the AF Academy analysis for cadets, and numerous NICAP and AF cases. “If an unfriendly country were to acquire this knowledge then they would be master of the world and could determine the survival of the U.S. If the U.S. were first to build an armed UFO force, then it would mean free‐ dom from war for an indefinite period. At least five other nations were engaged in this battle for UFO technology. It appears the aliens are peaceful but can defend themselves. There are not enough UFOs here to launch a full scale attack on us and they repeatedly avoid harming hu‐ mans. UFOs are not invulnerable and have crashed or been crippled. In 1963, a naval surface to air missile scored a direct hit on a UFO. In 1964, seven aerospace companies had top secret anti‐gravity projects in place; Bell, Boeing, Convair, Douglas, Hughes, Lockheed and Martin”. Keyhoe wondered if our broadcasts were being monitored by “Them” and in 1963 the Department of Justice was asked if killing an alien would be considered murder. The reply was that it would be classified as cru‐ elty to animals or disorderly conduct.

Other scientists speculated that we would establish large colonies on other planets even if they were already inhabited. What if they heard that? What do they think of our news casts describing murders and hijack‐ ings and TV shows like Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie? What of our constant wars? Would they fully understand and recognize humor and satire? Keyhoe described the first ET transmissions that were picked up by Nicola Tesla in 1899 and again in 1959 by NASA monitoring a craft circling earth. “In 1960, Project Ozma was headed up by Dr Frank Drake. 16

Strong intelligent signals were immediately picked up from the Tau Ceti region of space. Project Ozma was immediately shut down and moved to Arecibo Puerto Rico under AF control. The CIA takeover of the AF UFO investigations took place in 1953. The five day Robertson Panel was com‐ pletely run by the CIA. Newsmen were not allowed to ask questions and there would be no disparaging remarks allowed about the AF. Chief of Press Al Chop and later Captain Ruppelt resigned. Ruppelt died of a heart attack due to the pressure put upon him to edit his tell all UFO book.

Aliens from Space: By John Ventre

The AF started smearing its own pilots that reported UFOs. In 1962, the CIA went after NICAP. Two CIA agents convinced Admiral Hillenkoetter not to testify in Congressional hearings and he resigned his NICAP Board position.

KEYHOE

Keyhoe went on to describe UFO sightings by astronauts James McDevitt, Frank Bor‐ man and Michael Collins. “The CIA got us into this mess and the AF caught the heat. Frank Edwards agreed to blast the AF on the air with Keyhoe prior to the release of the Condon report but Edwards suddenly died of a heart attack. In 1967 the Soviets announced that their astronomers had proof of UFOs. There was speculation that the Mars moon, Phobos, was a hollow craft since it defied the laws of physics and cir‐ cled Mars faster than the planet rotated. Every 26 years when Mars was closest to Earth there was an increase in UFO reports. The first stealth UFO report occurred on May 13 1967 when a craft flew 200 feet above the NORAD facility in Colorado Springs and was picked up on radar, but was invisible to sight. In 1968, the Soviets abruptly reversed their position regarding UFOs but Henry Ford II went public with his UFO sighting. Keyhoe was told by Dr Robert Low that, “The AF doesn’t know how to prepare the public and the CIA doesn’t think the public can ever be prepared for this disclosure”. UFOs received a higher classification than Top Secret and it con‐ cerned plans for emergency defense meas‐ ures if they proved hostile. The Project Saint program was put in place to shoot them down.

Keyhoe goes on to name names and de‐ tails of case after case in the most de‐ tailed description of UFO encounters that I have ever read. In his appendix he names 122 scientists, military and pilots who dispute the Air Force conclusions. He obvi‐ ously had the proof in his NICAP files and the 51 classified reports given to him by Captain Ruppelt. Keyhoe goes on to de‐ scribe the great 1965 blackout as being caused by UFOs. The first report came from Syracuse Deputy Aviation Commis‐ sioner Robert Walsh who saw a UFO at Hanford airport followed by reports from flight instructor Weldon Ross and tech James Brooking. A Time Magazine re‐ porter even took a photo. President John‐ son, fearing a panic, decided not to an‐ nounce a national emergency even though power companies could not ex‐ plain the loss of electricity. A broken cir‐ cuit breaker was blamed but an industry Power publication disputed that claim. Later that year, more blackouts occurred in Minnesota, Texas and New Mexico after UFOs were spotted. In the end, even the National Academy of Scientists praised the Condon Report and Project Blue Book was closed even though only 59 cases out of over 13,000 were actually investigated by Blue Book; 701 cases were classified as unknown. In 1970, the Air Force Academy analysis was made public and it was quickly replaced by the Air Force censors. The AF retaliated against Dr Hynek’s criticism of the Condon report and dropped him as a consultant. The AF wrote a blistering letter to the RAND Corporation for their support of the UFO reality. Lt. Col. Corbin told Keyhoe that the AF was still investigating UFOs under Project’s Blue Paper and Old New Moon but they will deny it.

HYNEK Operation Lure was put in place to attract the UFOs to a designated location and 17

obtain undisputed photographic proof of their existence. It would cost less than one Apollo launch. It should also be considered that Earth is located on the outer edge of the Milky Way galaxy and is a perfect way station and launch location for alien mis‐ sions beyond our galaxy! Upon Keyhoe’s ouster from NICAP in 1973, he commented that there was a complete reversal of NI‐ CAP’s policies. Most investigators and advi‐ sors resigned after it was disclosed that NICAP would no longer criticize the AF.

DRAKE Little did Major Keyhoe know that the Agency that he had fought so hard against for so long had infiltrated NICAP and were now running it. The CIA was now in charge of NICAP and eventually bankrupted it with overblown expense accounts and salaries and NICAP closed its doors in 1980.

From all I’ve read, it seems as though the ETs that were here in the 1950’s were not hostile. That seemed to change in the 1970’s as a new species may have arrived. I also find it interesting that Dr Frank Drake who was in charge of Operation Ozma went on to Direct SETI. George Santayana once said that “one must understand his‐ tory in order to avoid repeating its mis‐ takes”. It seems obvious to me that SETI and NASA are the public view while the real space program is operated by the Air Force...

Warminster 2015 ‐ A Short Review of an Incredible Event: By Steve Mera

I hadn't been to Warminster since 2002, a fleeting visit on my way through to Stone‐ henge. Of course, any UK ufologist would know of this location due to its infamous UFO sightings that took place in 1965 and apparently continuing to date, even though much less frequent. My first knowledge of Warminster stretches back to when I was two years of age. My mother and father had in fact, taken me there whilst a young child. All I recall of that momentous visit was sat on a blanket on top of a hill looking at the night sky. Watching the stars avidly and wondering what everyone there was looking for. Happy days… I was to visit Warminster once again but this time, a special occasion. It was the Warminster Conference, celebrating 50 years of 'the thing', and I not only had been invited to lecture at the event but Phenom‐ ena Magazine was also sponsoring it. Early on in its advertising, I quickly realised that this event was to have a good response as numerous conference goers had informed me of their attendance. The event held at the Old Bell Inn was a perfectly suitable place serving popular drinks as the 'Amber Gambler' and of course the 'Warminster Thing'. The event was organised and constructed by Kevin Goodman, Colin Rees and Steve Wills with numerous others assisting; to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this pro‐ found aerial phenomena that has left its historical footprint upon the small town of Warminster. There are numerous reviews on this confer‐ ence, the best being a video presentation constructed by my good friend Ben‐Emlyn Jones which can be viewed at the following link… https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=7UgsCh9RRFs The event was hosted by researcher Ross Hemsworth who announced the first speaker of the day, none other than Kevin Goodman, recognised for his investigation and research into the UFO phenomena around Warminster. Kevin had been busy running up to the event with numerous radio interviews and television news broad‐ casts, the event had been extremely well publicised. I glanced around the room, around 150 visitors fell silent as Kevin explained the incidents that had taken place in Warmin‐ ster and the work of Arthur Shuttlewood who had certainly placed Warminster on the ufological map. Back in the day the village was a blaze with UFO researchers from all around the country as well as gain‐ ing international recognition as a UK hot‐ spot. Kevin went on to talk about numerous publications, the ‘Thing’, which by all

intense and purpose scared the locals. Strange sightings of disc shaped objects, long cylindrical craft, strange lights and of course that weird humming, buzzing, dron‐ ing sound that was said to be loud, coming from above and with the intensity to shake your roof tiles lose. A strange phenomena some called ‘Hummadruzz’. A profound mystery. Kevin’s lecture had set the stage for the rest of the days speakers. It was a fascinating and informative historical lec‐ ture that clarified what exactly was re‐ ported throughout the area, when and by whom. Thoroughly enjoyable. Up next was myself. I had delivered a popu‐ lar lecture entitled ‘UFOs throughout the ages’ which demonstrated through petro‐ glyphs, cave paintings, artwork and tapes‐ tries that the UFO phenomena was in no way a new mystery. It would seem that strange UFOs in the sky have been seen and documented since man picked up a stone to scratch into a wall. It would seem that this particular phenomena has always been with us and... just maybe... ‘we’ are the new kids on the block. I also went on fur‐ ther to show the first UFO photographs ever taken, plate photography shots, onto black and white photography, aircraft gun camera photos, the birth of the colour photo, video cameras, digital cameras and even NASA video footage. This lecture left the audience thinking... how long has this mysterious phenomena really been with us and what might lie ahead? Good friend Mike Oram took to the floor to talk about his personal involvement in the investigation and research into the sightings around Warminster. I found his personal accounts of working with Arthur Shuttle‐ wood entertaining as well as his recollec‐ tions of numerous UFO sightings and 22

experiences. Mike who has had many a contact experience described sightings I was unaware of and delivered an in depth view of Arthurs life and his work in this field. A very enjoyable lecture that left my mind a race with questions. Who were these mysterious visitors to Warminster and why there interest in this seemingly quiet small town? A brilliant lecture.

Fellow researcher Malcolm Robinson’s lecture was equally filled with historical information. He demonstrated the similari‐ ties between the Warminster UFO flap that seemed to have started in 1965 and an‐ other UFO flap that took place in and around a small town in Scotland known as Bonnybridge. Like Warminster, sightings throughout Bonnybridge still occur today, but are less frequently reported. No one exactly knows why locations like Bonny‐ bridge and Warminster hold an interest to those who may be flying these strange crafts around. Never the less, this small town in Falkirk, Scotland was a buzz of activity and had even been listed as the most significant UFO location in the coun‐ try some years back. The similarities were startling and the sightings and accounts similar, except for the strange sounds heard coming from above by residents of Warminster. All in all, a fascinating lecture that the audience thoroughly appreciated.

Unfortunately due to Win Keech being un‐ able to attend, BUFORAs Chairman Matt Lyons was kind enough to give a short pres‐ entation in regards the UFO reporting pro‐ cedure and documentation pertaining to the Warminster incidents.

Between the presentations a number of things took place. The first was a silent auction for some wonderful prizes and an award given to Dot Street and Brenda Butler for their outstanding work in the field of Ufology. A well deserved award; and a surprise visit from Arthur Shuttle‐ wood’s family who were also presented an award for Arthur’s dedicated research and investigation of the mysteries sur‐ rounding Warminster. A very touching presentation that I’m sure Arthur would have been thrilled with.

was glad to be part of. Let’s just hope... there are many more events to come in Warminster... Now... might as well visit Stonehenge and Avebury whilst I’m here... A special thanks to all for my invite and well done to raising a substantial donation to the ‘Help For Heroes’ fund. For those interested, there has already been talk about further conferences to take place in Warminster next year. So… Watch this space!

A wonderful and sold out event that was packed to the rim with presentations. A great location, a great venue and of course, in great company. It was a thrilling and thoroughly enjoyable occasion, one I

Oh… and by the way. A visit to Stonehenge and Avebury com‐ pleted my weekend. Thanks guys...

Matt also provided details how BUFORA was constructed. Matt who is a musician has looked into the mysterious sounds that were often heard bellowing from the sky throughout Warminster and he explained a common connection between many UFO incidents and reported strange sounds. An excellent and informative lecture. Up next was a speaker I thought had retired from doing public lectures. It was none other than author and researcher Peter Paget. Known for his excellent books, UFO‐ UK and The Welsh Triangle. Peter, who is most certainly a character and an wonder‐ fully entertaining lecturer provided a fasci‐ nating lecture that was packed to the rim with profoundness, theories and of course details of a conspiratorial nature. Peter who claimed to have been a former government agent was dressed a bit like a Man In Black and his presentation was very theatrical. Peter talked about the energy propulsion systems of UFOs and the dangers of ap‐ proaching a landed craft. Peter also talked of ancient buildings, the pyramids and oth‐ ers and talked of sound waves that could be utilised to move things. All in all, a mind blowing lecture. I’m sure the audience won’t forget Peter in a hurry.

The author of several books known as the ‘Haunted Skies’ collection, John Hanson was next to take the floor. John, a clearly pas‐ sionate researcher had a mountain of infor‐ mation in regards all things ufological. He had collated lots of information pertaining to numerous UFO events which have been listed in his encyclopedia type books. The audience fully enjoyed John’s lecture which was full of varied and interesting informa‐ tion. Johns books are available to purchase on Amazon.

This was a stealth reconnaissance excursion for HPI (Haunted and Paranormal Investiga‐ tions International). I was informed by email from an unknown source to check out The Holbrooke Hotel and The Owl Tavern in Grass Valley. I ran it by the President of HPI, Shannon 'Ms. Macabre' McCabe. The sto‐ ries that are being told by people who fre‐ quent these establishments, is that both places are haunted. Shan gave me the green light to check it out and that is what I plan to do. But let me do some researching first and see what I can dig up; this is what I found. Gold miners dreamed of striking it rich and boom towns were popping up all over the place, one of those places is Grass Val‐ ley. Stephen and Clara Smith were one of the first to invest in the boom town called Grass Valley and built The Golden Gate Saloon. This is known as the oldest, continuously operated saloon west of the Mississippi River. Then in 1862 one of their rela‐ tives, Charles Smith, did some additional building around the saloon and it became the Exchange Hotel, this was a place that you could exchange your gold. Finally in 1879, the hotel was purchased by Ellen and Daniel Holbrooke and a new name was given to the hotel, it became the Holbrooke Hotel. Many famous guests such as Ulysses S. Grant, Grover Cleveland, Ben‐ jamin Harrison, James Garfield, prize fight‐ ers 'Gentleman Jim' Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons stayed there Famous authors like Mark Twain and Bret Harte also stopped by plus entertainers like Lola Mon‐ tez, Lotta Crabtree and Emma Nevada stayed the night as well. Even bad guys like Black Bart have frequented this prestige establishment. The Holbrooke Hotel is a California State Landmark and if you ever pay a visit you will understand why. My research on The Owl Tavern revealed that it consisted of two structures built in 1857 and 1862. The original saloon opened in 1813 as The Bank Exchange Saloon. I will discuss more about this bar as you read on. In this case the date was March 15, 2008,

Saturday and it was time to round up my posse. I don't like ghosthunting by myself. I brought along ghosthunters‐in‐training Nancy Towne who has her own online s t o r e c a l l e d A n n a b e l l e ' s a t : stores.ebay.com/Anabelles ‐ Sparky Parker and Angel Kesti. Equipment being used included digital cameras, electronic audio voice recorders, plus ‘Listen Up’ sound enhancers. Nancy rode with me up to Grass Valley and we met up with Angel on the freeway on the way there, I was wondering who

was blowing their horn at me like a mad‐ man, I casually looked over and it was Angel waving to me. Sparky was already waiting for us at the hotel and she brought her cute Chihuahua. The first employee we met was Kelly Sheehan who works at the Front Desk. She is a Guest Service Representative. She greets every‐ one with a smile. She is a new employee, so she really hasn't experienced anything yet. Kelly has definitely heard the stories though. We get a grand tour of the hotel, it's quite accommodating for many guests. We meet Renee Smith (the housekeeper) and she told me how she would never forget how she heard the exit door rat‐ tling continuously for a long period of time. The exit door is next to Room 9, which is reputed to be very haunted. She allowed my investigators and me to visit the various rooms that were frequented by famous people who stayed at this ho‐ tel. There is a big picture on one wall 27

emblazoned with the words ‘Mark Twain slept on this bed’! The ambiance of history resonates throughout the hotel and each room is completely different in its style and decoration. There is the touch of the Old West and Victorian, you feel like you have walked into the past. The decor is exquisite and I can see why ghosts haunt this hotel; why would anyone want to leave paradise? We are told that in Room #1 a couple on their honeymoon heard the clanging sounds of chains and banging’s on the wall. The female guest in the room placed her hand on the wall and an unseen force pushed her hand onto the wall and did not let it go for a several min‐ utes, which really spooked her. In the kitchen an em‐ ployee by the name of Denise heard her name being called by a unseen woman and later by an unseen man. Kelley Ga‐ ritty, who is the chef, was once walking downstairs and she was physically pushed from behind, she could feel two hands on her back. She felt they were the hands of a mans and the push made her fall into the employee in front of her. She has also seen an appari‐ tion of a woman in 1800s style clothing with a high neck, standing over the mixer as if she was looking at something. Kelley watched the apparition for about two min‐ utes and then it vanished. Then the second time she saw the same apparition, it was standing in kitchen looking into the corner and it appeared that the apparition of this woman knew that Kelley was watching her, showing intelligence. Kelley told me that she came across the apparition of a little girl that she feels has the name Elizabeth. When she saw the little girl several cans flew off the shelves. Kelley has worked here for awhile, so she had many stories to tell and her last one was that she once came across a weird mist near the sink in the kitchen. There was no reason for the mist to be there, there was no hot running water or

anything else that could cause the mist and it finally evaporated as fast as it appeared. One thing about the Holbrooke Hotel, you don't have to stay in one of their rooms to experience the paranormal, the women's bathroom is haunted downstairs and the Iron Room (a storage room that once was a bar) is haunted. Patrons have heard the door slam in the women's bathroom for no apparent reason. Patrons have also seen shadows underneath the doorway both in the woman's bathroom and The Iron Room. As I was recording the stories of this hotel the General Manager arrived, his name is Sean Gilleran and he has been at this estab‐ lishment for one year. Kelly Sheehan and Sean told me that there is a legend that one of the hotel managers got into trouble at and when he passed on he came back to haunt the place. The deceased manager is affectionately known as ‘Edgar the Ghost’. They have also heard stories from some of the hotel patrons that children have been heard playing in the corridors and rooms, which sounds to me to be a residual haunt‐ ing activity. TV sets have been known to go off and then go on by themselves in various rooms of the hotel. I learned that the Iron Room was once a speakeasy and that Rooms 14 and 15 were once used as a strongbox, i.e. a place to count gambling money. The hotel bar was so popular during Prohi‐ bition Days that it actually remained open. Sean gave me a history lesson about a small town up the road called 'Rough N' Ready', named after Teddy Roosevelt. Rough N' Ready had some political problems during Prohibition and established itself as its own country for a period of one month. While my investigators were wandering all over the hotel trying to pick up EVPs and get some photographic evidence, they came to the pantry and a cord hanging from the wall started moving back and forth on its own. The back part of the hotel is called the Purcell House and you must walk through the garden to reach this section of the hotel. The Purcell House has rooms that are named after famous mines, like Sixteen to One, Dutch Flat, Pennsylvania, El Dorado and Del Oro. As I wandered around to vari‐ ous rooms I started thinking about what it would be like to stay overnight on a week‐ end and listen to the live bands that appear in their bar area. I can just imagine the fun evening festivities! Before we left, Sean explained that he has never witnessed anything, but that the children who visit this hotel have seen a little girl phantom and will run to their par‐ ents exclaiming they have just seen a ghost! As we were leaving this historic building I could understand why patrons keep coming back, because of the Old West ambiance,

the great hospitality, the friendliness of the hotel staff, the great social atmosphere and the feeling of being home, but yet away from home. What a wonderful place! Yes! I will be back! Hotel information. This Grass Valley hotel is styled in Victorian décor and features on‐site dining and rooms equipped with cable TV and free Wi‐ Fi. Empire Mine State Historic Park is 1.5 28

IMPORTANT NOTICE! It is fair to say, in this day and age, that the disconnect between mainstream media “reality” and what is really going on is getting to the point where many people in society are not being told the full story—about almost everything and anything. In geopolitics, we see media organisations such as Al Jazeera willing to totally fabricate events and broadcast them via BBC, CNN, ABC and other licen‐ sees. In what is needlessly called “alternative health”, we see the might of trans‐ national drug companies steering government health policies as well as affecting personal sovereignty in the form of forced vaccinations, freedom of choice in the treatment of serious disease, and the right to be able to purchase health prod‐ ucts of our choosing.

In explorations of “fringe sciences”, including subjects such as the Expanding Earth theory or the Electric Universe theory, we see the unexplained anomalies regarding energy, gravity, electricity and biology, being ignored, suppressed or ridiculed. I believe that it is in the open‐minded exploration of such anomalies, that we actually further our scientific understanding of our universe. In discus‐ sion of consciousness and the paranormal, we again see mainstream media re‐ porting distorted versions of events, misreporting factual data, not reporting it at all, and again, outright ridicule (snigger factor). The fact of the matter is that people want to know more about who we are as spiritual beings, about the role of consciousness in determining how we experi‐ ence life, and the role our inherent beliefs have on how we live and treat other people. I believe that the vast majority of people on this planet want to live in peace and harmony with each other, and I also believe that there are forces at work, including the military‐intelligence‐industrial complex, that desire and profit from manufactured conflict. We live in an era where a growing number of people are stepping up to blow the whistle on illegal and suppressed informa‐ tion. Information they believe is in everyone’s interests to be made public. Un‐ fortunately, despite the assurances of protection to whistleblowers from world leaders, we actually see the opposite—the suppression and persecution of such people. And finally, we live on a planet where the way in which we live is dramatically affecting the entire ecosystem. Meas‐ urable levels of chemicals are found in the air over the entire planet—in the groundwater of every continent, and in the oceans everywhere. Why is it noble to focus on CO2 and energy sav‐ ing, while ignoring the death, disease and destruction of our habitat and life forms, including our own? I have cre‐ ated the Alternative News Project (ANP), not as a vehicle to fight the current mainstream manufactured reality, but instead to provide a vehicle for like‐minded, independent thinkers, to help create something new. Some‐ thing better. Instead of endless searches on the Internet, we will bring you the news, every day, right across the spectrum of hundreds of non‐ mainstream news Topics. We have called it a Project, as it is not just about information—it is about the building of a global community through the distri‐ bution of information. The ANP is the first time that independent thinkers of the world (i.e. you) have a centralised location not only to see more of what is going on in your world than ever before, but where you also have the opportunity to send alternative news and information from anywhere across the globe. You are the real key to our project, because by receiving informa‐ tion you can inform others and by con‐ tributing your knowledge to us, we can broaden our scope of services around the globe. As such, the ANP is designed to be a community‐based interactive news and information project by the people for the people. Welcome aboard the ANP, and thanks for being part of the adventure. In September 2011, a boy appeared in Berlin, having apparently lived in the wild for the previ‐ ous five years. This captured the imagination of the world’s media before being revealed as a hoax. Earlier instances cannot be so easily dismissed. Around eighty historical cases have been reported from all around the world. From ancient tales such as Romulus and Remus through to nineteenth century stories of children suckled by wolves in India, the concept of humans surviv‐ ing outside their normal environment contains an endearing fascination. Most of the historical stories involve animals as the guardians or families of the children. The majority are widely con‐ sidered to be fakes, either invented or embellished. Such doubts are not new but failed to dampen the enthusiasm of some prominent seventeenth and eighteenth century figures. 31

Feral Children in Europe’s age of Enlightenment: By Paul Williams

The great classifier Carl Linnaeus listed wild men as a separate subspecies, homo ferens, in 1735 and gave nine examples. Each re‐ ferred to a child or children whose behavior was considered abnormal or unusual by the standards of the time. They were described, and endorsed as genuine wild children, by some of the Enlightenment's leading intel‐ lectuals, based on the following limited facts. The Lithuanian Bear Boy. Irish physician Bernard Connor, who worked for the King of Poland, reported seeing a captured wild boy in Lithuania in 1694. The boy was about ten years old and lacked the ability to reason. An earlier wild boy in Lithuania was seen by a Dutch envoy named Cleverskerk, who corresponded with Connor and told him that the boy had been brought up by bears. The boy was about thirteen years old at the time of his capture and lived in a convent in Warsaw. An eyewitness to the capture, Christopher Hartknoch, said that there were two boys with the bears, one of whom escaped. The captive was baptized as Joseph. He learnt to stand erect but never spoke. The Hessian Wolf Boy. According to the chronicle of Saint Peter of Erfurt in Thuringia, a boy who behaved like a wolf was found in the wild in 1304. The boy said that he had been taken by wolves when he was three and raised by them. He was exhibited at the court of Henry, Prince of Hesse. A variant of the chronicle refers to a different boy who in 1344 was found by hunters in the Hart forest in Wetterau. He had been taken by wolves twelve years earlier and lived until the age of 80. The story of the Hessian wolf boys was retold by Philipp Camerarius in his Operae Horarum Subcisivarum Sive Meditationes Historicae, 1609. He also told the tale of the Bamberg cattle boy, starting a trend whereby the wild children would be dis‐ cussed as a group rather than individual cases.

The Bamberg Cattle Boy. This boy apparently grew up with cows and went on all fours to fight with dogs. Unlike most of the other wild children, he was tamed and went on to marry. Camer‐ arius said that he often saw the boy at the court of the Prince of Bamberg at the end of the sixteenth century. The Irish Sheep Boy. This child was described by Nicolaes Tulp, in his Observations Medicae in 1672, as eating grass and bleating like a sheep. He ate only grass and hay. The boy had been taken from Ireland to Amsterdam, a city where Tulp had a spell as mayor. Peter, the wild boy of Hamelyn. In July 1724 a wild boy was captured in the woods near Hamelyn and given the name Peter. King George I ordered that he be sent to London and given as a present to Princess Carolyn. On 9 April 1726 the Weekly Journal reported that the savage boy had been presented in the drawing room at St James’ palace. He was sup‐ posed to be 15 years old, was clothed in green and had scarlet stockings. Peter walked upright and sat still for his picture. William Kent painted him with other members of the King’s court. The finished work is on the east wall of the King’s stair‐ case at Kensington Palace. Initially Peter failed to respond to efforts, instigated by the princess who appointed a tutor, to teach him to read and write. However, shortly before his death he was said to be able to sing a few songs and recite both his own name and that of King George. Daniel Defoe wrote a book about Peter in 1726, commenting that “the end of this undertaking is not to make you laugh at the person.” Not heeding this advice Jona‐ thon Swift wrote two mocking pamphlets, one of which suggested that Peter would enjoy the opera because it involved peo‐ ple making incomprehensible noises. Un‐ daunted by, or ignorant of, such ridicule Peter lived out his existence in the care of various officials before dying on 22 Febru‐ ary 1785. He is buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s in Northchurch. A contempo‐ rary account of Peter’s life was written by Lord Monboddo. The two Pyrenees Boys. According to Jean Jacques Rousseau’s Discourse on the Origin of Human Inequal‐ ity, 1754, the boys were discovered in 1719 running up and down the mountains like quadrupeds. The Kranenburg girl. In the summer of 1717 a girl, of about nineteen, was found in the woods of the Kranenburg estate near Zwolle in the Dutch province of Overyssel in 1717. 32

She was identified as Anna Maria Jennaert, who had been kidnapped from Antwerp at the age of three months. She learnt spin‐ ning and sign language but never mastered speech. The Wild Girl of Songi or Champagne. In September 1731 a young girl, aged about nine, appeared in the village of Songi, near Chalons. She was baptized on 16 June 1732 and given the name Marie‐ Angelique Memmie Le Blanc. She learned French rapidly over the next ten years and lived in a series of convents. Gradually, with difficulty, she was weaned away from a diet of grass, leaves and raw flesh. From her limited recollections it was surmised that she came from Canada and spent some time as a slave in the West Indies before being brought to Europe. The most detailed account of her existence was writ‐ ten by Charles Marie de la Condamine, under the pseudonym Madame Hecquet, in 1755. Lord Monboddo translated this into English in 1796. It included contempo‐ rary letters from those who had seen her.

Jean de Liege. Jean was first mentioned by Sir Kenelm Digby in 1644. As a five year old Jean went to the woods with fellow villagers but, when the others returned home, he stayed in the wild until he was captured at the age of 21. Digby received this information from others who had apparently seen Jean. So who were these scientists and learned men who believed from anecdotal and limited evidence in the wild men? Carl Linnaeus, (1707‐1778), is known as the father of modern taxonomy. His System Naturae was first published in the Nether‐ lands in 1735, running to a mere twelve pages. Over 12,000 species of plants and animals were classified in the tenth edi‐ tion, of 1758. Linnaeus was the first to classify humans in a biological system. Jean Jacques Rosseau (1712‐1778) was a phi‐ losopher, composer and writer. In 1762, his book, “The Social Contract”, was pub‐ lished. It became an important political philosophical work, arguing in favour of democracy. He was also one of the first to support developmentally appropriate edu‐ cation. Lord Monboddo, or James Burnett (1714‐ 1799), was a Scottish judge. His work on the development of languages argued that

Feral Children in Europe’s age of Enlightenment: By Paul Williams

man developed language in response to social and environmental conditions. De‐ spite being partially deaf, he traced the evolution of modern European languages. Nicholas Tulp (1593‐1674), was an anato‐ mist who discovered spina Bifida. He was friends with Rembrandt and became the subject of the artists’ painting, “The Anat‐ omy Lesson”. Sir Kenelm Digby (1603‐1665) was a found‐ ing member of the Royal Society.

Amongst other things he is credited as the first person to note the importance of oxygen to plants and invented the modern wine bottle. These were educated men who contributed much to their chosen disciplines. Their publicly expressed belief in the wild children helped stimulate a general inter‐ est in the concept that remains active today and obliges us to give such views serious consideration.

September 1 ‐ Neptune at Opposition. The blue giant planet will be at its closest approach to Earth and its face will be fully illuminated by the Sun. It will be brighter than any other time of the year and will be visible all night long. This is the best time to view and photograph Neptune. Due to its extreme distance from Earth, it will only appear as a tiny blue dot in all but the most powerful telescopes. September 4 ‐ Mercury at Greatest Eastern Elongation. The planet Mercury reaches greatest eastern elongation of 27 degrees from the Sun. This is the best time to view Mercury since it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the evening sky. Look for the planet low in the western sky just after sunset. September 13 ‐ New Moon. The Moon will located on the same side of the Earth as the Sun and will not be visible in the night sky. This phase occurs at 06:41 UTC. This is the best time of the month to observe faint objects such as galaxies and star clusters because there is no moonlight to interfere. September 13 ‐ Partial Solar Eclipse. A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon covers only a part of the Sun, sometimes resembling a bite taken out of a cookie. A partial solar eclipse can only be safely observed with a special solar filter or by looking at the Sun's reflection. The partial eclipse will only be visible in southern Africa, Madagascar, and Antarctica. September 23 ‐ September Equinox. The September equinox occurs at 08:21 UTC. The Sun will shine directly on the equator and there will be nearly equal amounts of day and night throughout the world. This is also the first day of fall (autumnal equinox) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of spring (vernal equinox) in the Southern Hemisphere. September 28 ‐ Full Moon, Supermoon. The Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 02:50 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Corn Moon because the corn is harvested around this time of year. This moon is also known as the Harvest Moon. The Harvest Moon is the full moon that occurs closest to the September equinox each year. This is also the second of three supermoons for 2015. The Moon will be at its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual. This will be the closest full moon of the year. September 28 ‐ Total Lunar Eclipse. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes completely through the Earth's dark shadow, or um‐ bra. During this type of eclipse, the Moon will gradually get darker and then take on a rusty or blood red color. The eclipse will be visible throughout most of North and South America, Europe, Africa, and western Asia. September 29 ‐ NASA Announcement. During a press conference NASA confirmed running water on Mars which has a salty composition.

Local author and DJ Simon Williams was fed up with the constraints of stream radio, so decided in true D.I.Y. fashion to start his own station. And the Sounds of Salford Radio was born... "I started it up basically because I was sick of mainstream radio where presenters are being governed by other people and they can't say anything, or haven't got the balls to say anything" Simon explains "If it's going on around you should be talking about it, a bit like the Salford Star." The new station aims to cover local issues in a proper way, while hosting poets, bands, raconteurs and basically anyone who wants a voice or wants to promote whatever they are doing creatively. The station currently has only one show on a loop, presented by Simon but has already attracted over one thousand listeners in a week and has a podcast going out in the States. "I do the Golden Oldies section but hopefully other DJs will bring their own genres with them" says Simon "It's open to anyone from Manchester and Sal‐ ford. If you fancy having a go just get in touch and I'll show you what to do. We also want bands to get in touch and we'll give them air‐ play. The station's not started properly but it's building and I want the people of Salford to come on board and grow with it."

The Sounds of Salford can be accessed through Spreaker.com on a loop at: http://www.spreaker.com/user/thesoundsofsalford or via Primcast when it's broadcasting live at: http://www.primcast.com/radio/608369 People can get in touch with Simon via The Sounds of Salford Facebook group or at thesoundsofsalfordradio@yahoo.com Recently Phenomena Project to a trip to the studio... British Area 51? Claims secret ALIEN research base uncovered in Farnborough

SEPTEMBER 2015

proved by Qinetiq's involvement in mining coupled with a strange rumbling noise they allegedly heard a cross Farnborough over the last 15 years, which they deduced was it being secretly expanded. Three so‐called psychic remote viewers given the name of the site, but no more details, as part of the re‐ search, also came back with descriptions of a highly technological and dis‐ turbing underground base, they claimed. Not convinced? Neither are some other UFO investigators. Nigel Watson, author of the UFOs: The Nazi Connection, said: "It sounds like they are trying to bring a lot of separate things to make (something) whole." But he added that "the idea" of alien or flying saucer bases being under‐ ground was "nothing new", dating back to at least 1962, when Albert Bender, founder of the International Flying Saucer Bureau (IFSB) in Bridgeport, Con‐ necticut, claimed that alien beings took him to an underground HQ in Antarc‐ tica. He said: "Sceptics think such stories are the product of malicious disin‐ formation or fantasies, yet that doesn’t stop people believing in their exis‐ tence. Perhaps if we all go under that flying saucer ‘shelter’ we might all believe." An MoD spokesman said: "We do not comment on UFO matters." Ex‐ press.co.uk contacted Qinetiq to comment on the strange suggestions and awaits a further response. A spokesman said: "We’re taking a look at the very detailed dossier and working on a response."

Paranormal investigators claim to have rumbled a top-secret Ministry of Defence (MoD) alien research centre hidden deep underground in a UFO hotspot.

By Jon Austin: Sunday Express

The British Earth and Aerial Mysteries Society (BEAMS) has released a bizarre 109‐page report, following a "special investigation" into the former MoD Defence Evaluation and Research Agency site now run by specialist de‐ fence, security and aerospace developer Qinetiq. BEAMS claims Farnborough has had high UFO sighting and alien abduction activity for years and thinks this might be connected to the alleged secret base. The group is convinced there is as much underground as above and what goes on there involves aliens, UFOs, interga‐ lactic defence and futuristic flight devel‐ opment. Their bizarre theory is based upon cryptic alien symbols they have "discovered" within the site, alleged intelligence service whistleblower testi‐ monies, and the responses from psychic researchers, the report claims. The BEAMS website says it was set up in 1991 as as a non profit‐making studies group into the paranormal. It said: "We have set up a network of active investi‐ gators who relay their gathered infor‐ mation through to our HQ. "As report‐ ers of the truth, duties of the BEAMS Team include research, interviewing, photography and journalism." Two of its key researchers, chairman Kenneth Parsons and his "alien abductee" part‐ ner Hilary Porter, carried out the "inquiry" and said evidence of the un‐ derground areas came from govern‐ ment whistleblowers. But they said the smoking gun evidence for the secret base were cryptic signs in the building and on site. The couple concluded that part of the site's road system has been made to look like an alien being depicted in ancient Aboriginal paintings in Australia, as a sign of the base's significance. On top of this they said part of the building has been made to look like a flying saucer. The report said: "As with the top ‐secret Area 51 in Nevada, and how that officially did "not exist" for decades…if what we are about to expose 'does not exist' either (as it is bound to be claimed), then our Government/military

have absolutely nothing to fear from us talking about it ‐ do they?" The pair claimed the Qinetiq site was the biggest of three secret underground facilities, also in the UK, including two other suspected ones. Their report said Government whistle‐ blowers had revealed: "Officers at Chicksands regularly simulated possible outcomes of nuclear war with their counterparts operating from an under‐ ground command centre beneath Qinetiq in Farnborough. "One source (who holds a sensitive government post) says that he knows several people currently employed at British under‐ ground facilities where acquired alien technology and genetics programmes are being carried out." The couple said the Cody technology park was also under tight security with armed guards and secret cameras. But the clincher, in their opinion, was the roundabout system near the main build‐ ing. Referring to an aerial slide of the roadways on site, which highlighted this roundabout, the report said: "We sug‐ gest that this is a stylised, diagrammatic representation of a grey/reptilian figure ‐ just like the Aboriginal supreme crea‐ tor paintings attempted to portray ‐ which is only visible like this from the air." Posing the question "why was it there?", the report said: "Why incorpo‐ rate a massive image of an alien, or supreme creator within a top secret subterranean military site ‐ somewhere so sensitive that it is virtually our own British equivalent of the Area 51 com‐ plex in Nevada." They surmised that the powers behind the site were confident the public would never see through their cryptic code, but "those" who needed to would recognise it instantly. Besides, if the roundabout did not do the trick, there was more. The couple concluded the roof and canopy of the main building had purposely been de‐ signed in the shape of a flying saucer just to hammer home the purpose of the secret base to those in the know. They said the existence of the "underground" parts of the site de‐ scribed by "sources" were further

UFO AND PARANORMAL NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Loud, pulsating noise heard in sky above Greater Manchester leaves residents mystified.

By Alex Hibbert: Manchester Evening News The rhythmic pulsing was heard by people in Stockport, Rochdale and Mid‐ dleton. A loud, pulsating bass noise booming in the skies above Greater Man‐ chester has left residents mystified. Confused people across the region re‐ ported hearing the rhythmic pulsing in Stockport, Rochdale and Middleton. And not only did the sound ring out loudly across the sky, but stunned listen‐ ers also said that it seemed to ‘move’ too. Posting on Reddit, user SkoomaOverdose said it sounded like a ‘UFO’. Under the heading ‘Weird, loud pulsating bass noise in the sky? Did anybody else hear this?’ they said: “It sounded like a UFO or something. I checked twitter and only one other person posted that they heard it in Stockport which is the other side of Man‐ chester to me. Anybody hear anything?” In reply, user MrBrizola, who also heard the unusual sound, said: “Me and a friend both heard it while walking home around east Manchester and thought it was really odd. It lingered around for ages, sounding deeper as it got further away. Clear sky but could‐ n’t see anything.”

UNITED STATES MAJOR GENERAL BLOWS THE WHISTLE ‐ THERE ARE BUILDINGS, STRUCTURES AND ROBOTS ON THE SURFACE OF MARS.

By Zon News “The time to pull the curtain back on this subject is long overdue. We have state‐ ments from the most credible sources — those in a position to know — about a fascinating phenomenon, the nature of which is yet to be determined.” The state‐ ment above comes from John Podesta (you can find the source for this quote, and more from Podesta on UFOs in this article), Chief of Staff for Bill Clinton and Coun‐ sellor to Barack Obama. It’s a powerful statement, because it’s true. We now have witness testimony from hundreds upon hundreds of high ranking, very credible people from within politics and government, military, and intelligence agencies saying that the UFO and extraterrestrial phenomenon is indeed real and deserves serious attention. If you put two and two together, it’s clear that: “THERE IS ABUN‐ DANT EVIDENCE THAT WE ARE BEING CONTACTED, THAT CIVILIZATIONS HAVE BEEN CONTACTING US FOR A VERY LONG TIME.” – DR. BRIAN O’LEARY, FORMER NASA ASTRONAUT AND PRINCETON PHYSICS PROFESSOR. But it’s not just the UFO/ extraterrestrial phenomenon that seems to be gaining more transparency.

He went on to describe it as ‘low and rhythmically pulsating with no massive jumps in pitch’ and said he heard it ‘over the space of about 5 solid minutes until it was too far away’. And already some wacky theories about what might have caused the phenomenon have surfaced on the site. Reddit user Fallout, from Middleton, wondered whether an earthquake in Chile might be responsible. He said: “Also worth noting, the earthquake off the coast of Chile was at 11:54 GMT, which seems to be around the same time as this sound, right?” But others posted that it could have been the Beetham Tower, which is well known for making strange noises when it is windy in the city centre. For now, the mystery of the unidentified flying sound remains unex‐ plained.

UK man wins court case against BBC for 911 cover up Strange things have been observed in space. Perhaps this is why the Russian govern‐ ment recently called for an international investigation regarding the missing film footage of the U.S. moon landings, or why a U.S. Defence physicist and the Deputy Manager of the Clemintine Mission to the moon recently blew the whistle on what’s really up there. Major General Albert Stubblebine can be added to the long list. Although he did not participate in the Citizens Hearing On UFO disclosure (where a number of military, political, academic, and government personnel testified to sev‐ eral former congressional members), his credentials speak for themselves. General Stubblebine is a retired United States Major General. He was also the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM), and one of America’s most distinguished soldiers and chief of U.S. Army Intelligence, with 16,000 soldiers under his command.

By DNA Tony Rooke refused to pay a TV license fee because the BBC intentionally misrepresented facts about the 9/11 attacks, he alleged. It is widely known that the BBC reported the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7 over 20 minutes before it occurred. WTC 7 was a 47‐story skyscraper that was not hit by a plane on 9/11 but collapsed at free‐fall speed later that day. So Rooke said the BBC had to have had prior knowledge to a terror attack making them complicit in the attack. He presented the BBC footage to the judge along with a slew of other evidence, and the judge agreed that Rooke had a reasonable case to protest. Rooke was found not guilty and he was not fined for failure to pay the licensing fee. ‘A very interesting case… A silly mistake by the BBC or the makings of a con‐ spiracy. Whatever you think, Tony Rooke may have a point’. Steve Mera PM.

He was a major proponent of “psychic” warfare and a key player in the “Stargate” project, which was a remote viewing program. Remote viewing can be defined in multiple ways. It’s the ability of individuals to describe a remote geographical loca‐ tion up to several hundred thousand kilometers away (sometimes even more) from their physical location. The results of this project were declassified and published in the peer reviewed Journal of Scientific Exploration. (source) In this program, indi‐ viduals successfully described physical objects that were nowhere near their physi‐ cal location. These programs were the inspiration behind the movie “Men Who Stare At Goats.” Here’s what General Stubblebine had to say about Mars, perhaps thanks to some intel from the Remote Viewing Program? “There are structures on the surface of Mars. I will tell you for the record that there are structures underneath the surface of Mars that cannot be seen by the Voyager cameras that went by in 1976. I will also tell you that there are machines on the surface of Mars and there are machines under the surface of Mars that you can look at, you can find out in detail, you can see what they are, where they are, who they are and a lot of detail about them.” — (Dolan, Richard. UFOs And The National Secu‐ rity State: New York: Richard Dolan Press)(source 2) I’ll let you think about that for a moment. Is it really that farfetched? With all of the recent UFO/extraterrestrial phenomenon disclosure happening within the past few years, is it really hard to fathom the existence of structures, bases, etc. on the Moon and on Mars?

NASA Mars announcement: water RESEARCHERS HAVE DISCOVERED A STONE CIRCLE THAT COULD BE OLDER THAN STONEHENGE. found flowing on Red Planet could sustain

life.

UFO hunters have spotted an unusually huge alien spacecraft to be hovering around Sun in the official NASA images, could this be an indication that Aliens do exist?

Featured by www.ancient‐code.com

According to initial reports, the newly “uncovered” structures could be older than Stonehenge. Researchers specu‐ late that the area where the stone circle was discovered could prove to be evi‐ dence that the area was home to an advanced ancient civilization, unknown to history books. The newly discovered site, which will provide a lot of work for archaeologists, was discovered at Dartmoor, near Sitta‐ for Tor. According to initial measure‐ ments, it is the highest circle in south‐ ern England at 525 meters above sea level providing panoramic views in all directions. According to reports, there are around 1000 stone circles in the British island but these are also present in outer parts of the World. Gobekli Teple which dates back around 9000 years has been said to have much simi‐ larities to Stonehenge. Researchers have reported that only one of the 31 stones remains standing today, and is located in a stretch where construction was not completed. Its pattern of a “sacred arch” consisting of thirty stones, is believed to have simi‐ larities to other sites that have been dated to the late Neolithic / early Bronze Age, between 5000 and 4000 years ago preceding the archaeological site of Stonehenge. “It is fantastic, very exciting,” said Andy Crabb, an archaeologist for the national park and Historic England.

(Above): Scorhill Bronze Age stone circle at Dartmoor National Park. (Screenshot/ YouTube). “Most of them were pretty well re‐ searched by antiquarians and early archaeologist in Victorian times.

To be able to investigate one now is really exciting.” Even though over 90 percent of these stones does not remain standing, re‐ searchers believe that once, these megalithic stones were upright because of packing material discovered around their bases. He alleged “sacred arch” is located in the northeastern part of Darmoor, and is composed by seven stone circles, which start from Whit Moor and head south to Grey Wethers. The crescent shape suggests that its design was carefully planned and may have relations between people who inhabited Dartmoor.

According to Andy Crabb, the circle was discovered by Mr Endacott after under‐ growth was destroyed in a controlled burn by commoners, exposing the stones. It would seem new discoveries are located regularly around our planet, demonstrating how very little we really know about our home and what our ancestors created...

By Emily Gosden: The Telegraph

Scientists have found evidence of briny water flowing on Mars during sum‐ mertime on the Red Planet. Water exists in liquid form on the surface of Mars, Nasa scientists have said, making it possible for life to be sustained on the Red Planet. Nasa hailed the “strongest evidence yet” of intermittent flows of briny water on Mars after scientists identified hydrated salts in dark streaks that ebb and flow down the planet’s slopes. The dark marks, which appear in summer months, are thought to be caused by the salty water wick‐ ing up from a shallow flow beneath the surface – although the origins of the briny flows remain a mystery. The water appears to exist in the form of “thin layers of wet soil", rather than pools of standing water, Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona, one of the scientists who made the finding using new imaging techniques said. The discovery of liquid water means Mars is “not the dry, arid planet that we thought of in the past”, Jim Green, Nasa’s direc‐ tor of planetary science said. Crucially, it “suggests that it would be possible for there to be life today on Mars”, John Grunsfeld, Nasa's science mission chief, said. Water is essential to life as we know it on Earth – and on Earth, wherever there is water there is also life, the scientists said. However, it is not yet known whether the briny water discovered on Mars may be too salty to support terrestrial life forms. Although microbes do exist in salty habitats on the Atacama Desert in South America, the most likely location for microbes on Mars would be in fresh water that scientists believe might exist deeper beneath the surface of the planet, scientists suggested. Dr. McEwen said he believed that “the possibility of life in the interior of Mars has always been very high” and it was “very likely” that there was life in the form of microbes “somewhere in the crust of Mars”. Dr. Grunsfeld said the briny water discovered on Mars could also be “useful to future travel‐ lers”, not only for hydration but potentially even for growing crops in “inflatable greenhouses”. Nasa has already said it wants to put men on Mars and Dr Grunsfeld said he hoped Nasa would be able to do so “in the near future”. Any Mars mission by Nasa would cost tens of billions of dollars. Michael Meyer, lead scientist for Nasa’s Mars Exploration Program said: “Now we know there is liquid water on the surface of this cold, desert planet. It seems that the more we study Mars, the more we learn how life could be supported and where there are resources to support life in the future.” The scientific paper behind the announcement, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, stopped short of claiming definitive proof of water but said the salt findings “strongly support the hypothesis”. It suggested possible origins of the water could include melting ice, an underground aquifer or water vapor from the thin Martian atmosphere, although it also set out shortcom‐ ings with each of the possible explanations.

Cynics questioned the timing of Nasa’s announcement, which coincides with the launch of the Ridley Scott film The Martian, starring Matt Damon, which Nasa has assisted in promoting. The film is based on a book by Andy Weir, who has admitted that Nasa liked his book because they “saw it as an oppor‐ tunity to reengage the public with space travel”. Wired magazine has pointed out that Nasa “sorely needs” such public support as “for a Mars mission, the agency would need an estimated $80 to $100 billion over the next 20 years, which Congress so far has refused to authorize”.

By Pat Bussard and Ken O’Keefe

In his speech,” Overcoming the disbelief of the UFO Phenomena,” the late Pulitzer Prize winning‐biographer and Harvard edu‐ cated Psychiatrist Dr. John E. Mack, elo‐ quently summed up the question, “Do inci‐ dents reported as either paranormal or UFO activity originate from the same or a differ‐ ent source(s)?” Here was his summation: The multi‐disciplinary area of UFO and alien encounter phenomenon should be viewed in rela‐ tion to other physical and experimental anomalies. “In other words, the near death group, dowsers group, psi group, paranor‐ mal mind‐matter, reincar‐ nation – each kind of holds their territory sa‐ cred and there is a great need to see what all of these anomalies have in common. For one thing, they all operate outside of the normal time‐space continuum – but there are many other matters that need to be looked at. If all these groups could get together and didn’t hold on, it would be very effective (in advancing knowledge).” In the end, he postulates, it doesn’t matter how an anomaly originates because these experiences are connected to something deeper. “Appreciate more the esoteric and sacred nature of the phenomena. . . Divine matters, these are Divine matters.” But, what do others in the field believe? Several current leaders and personalities in the paranormal and UFO fields were asked their opinions on this polarizing topic. Those luminaries included: renowned author Rosemary Ellen Guiley, multi‐generational abductee Thomas Reed, MUFON Executive Director Emeritus David MacDonald, and international speaker, author, and editor of Phenomena Magazine, Brian Allan. Rosemary Ellen Guiley, renowned author of 60 books covering a wide‐spectrum of para‐ normal and UFO phenomena, believes that there is a lot of overlap between paranor‐ mal and UFO activity. “Sometimes it boils down to someone’s subjective viewpoint. For instance, if someone is oriented

towards ETs and are predisposed to be‐ lieve in them, then they will relate the experience to that, if not, then they are going to look for another kind of interpre‐ tation. I think that these anomalies are all interrelated.” Based on years of intensive research, she also believes that someone can experience paranormal activity when they are young, but the incidents may

evolve as the person’s consciousness evolves into higher levels of contact. “One of the things I have done in my research, since 1983, is examine reported experi‐ ences that have taken place throughout history. I’ve examined the existing litera‐ ture, I’ve talked with people about all kinds of experiences and I have found that we have had core experiences throughout history. There are certain kinds of experi‐ ences that are common throughout the world, but the labels that we put on them in terms of description, differ widely de‐ pending upon culture and time in history. So, we are describing our experiences against a backdrop of popular culture, including scientific and religious views,” said Guiley. Some years ago, she developed an infor‐ mal survey with a psychologist on how people define their dream experiences. “At the time we were both members of the International Association for the Study of Dreams and we were interested in how 39

people define entity contact in their dream experiences. Dreams are a significant way by which we can encounter ETs, angels, or any kind of entity, light or dark. We did an experiment in which we took dream ex‐ periences about either angels or ETs, stripped out the distinction and just used the term 'entity.' We then used a random sample of people and asked them to inter‐ pret what an individual had experienced. We found that the descrip‐ tion of the type of ex‐ perience was all over the map. Experiences are defined through quite a subjective filter,” said Guiley. All players in the field however, are not in agreement on this hot button topic, “I am strongly of the opinion that they are not the same. Now, having said that, there are cases where one may influence the other,” said MUFON Executive Director Emeri‐ tus David MacDonald. “I firmly believe that the spiritual world, meaning the discarnate spirits of those who have gone before us is totally sepa‐ rate from the existence of life on other planets.” MacDonald went on to explain, “Many spiritual entities can be enhanced or their presence be made more clear by the intro‐ duction of certain energies and/or fre‐ quencies. It is through the manipulation of these forces that allow us to communicate with those who have passed over. The same can be said of ‘Inter‐dimensional travel’. It has a lot to do with frequency, vibrations and energy.” MacDonald has formed these personal opinions through, “55 years of research, practice, study and investigation in both areas of concern.” Thom Reed, who is part of a family that has had multiple‐generational involvement with the UFO phenomena, believes that paranormal and UFO identified encounters with the unknown come from different sources. “The origin of the two phenom‐ ena is definitely different. I don’t believe that there was anything spiritual in relation

Voices from the Field ‐ Are Alien and Paranormal Activity one of the same?: By Pat Bussard and Ken O’Keefe

to the beings that my family encountered. I do, however, think that there may be a way to bend time and space that allows for travel between galaxies.” Reed believes that some of what is defined as paranormal is actually a sensitivity to different frequencies. He cites the following uncited study as an example, “An experi‐ ment was conducted in which a man had his brain stimulated with electromagnetic frequency (EMF) energy. A short distance away a woman sat with her eyes covered. When her blindfold was quickly removed and a flashlight shown in his face, she had the exact reaction at the same time as the male subject, even though no light was directed in her eyes. They were able to engage in a shared experience because they had modulated to the same frequency,” explained Reed, whose family story has been formally inducted by the Great Bar‐ rington Historical Society in Massachusetts as the first off world/UFO Case in U.S. His‐ tory. By this reasoning, a medium who is able to connect with spiritual energy successfully for a number of clients may have the ability to modulate their energy to a number of frequencies. He gives another example of this theorem in a situation involving his son, Chance. The young man became panicked that something was amiss at his father’s house. For no reason other than an intuitive “push”, he embarked on the hour long drive to Thom’s house. Shortly after arriving at his father’s home, there was a wreck that propelled an automobile onto his father’s property. In this example, Chance’s ability to connect with an energetic frequency that gave him information about a near‐future event, may be an example of the true na‐ ture of precognition. Brian Allan, international speaker, author, and editor of Phenomena Magazine, takes a middle of the road stance on this question. “I have found that in approximately 80% of cases I have personally investigated, the people involved were, if having UFO en‐ counters, simultaneously experiencing what one would describe as 'paranormal' en‐ counters and more importantly vice versa. It is also likely that if the encounters are in fact produced by non‐terrestrial beings, then their abilities and technology are able to produce what we regard as 'paranormal' events. By that I mean poltergeist type effects, walking through walls, etc. He then echoed Guiley’s thoughts, “The other thing is that depending on the era, and the cul‐ ture and sophistication of those who en‐ countered them there is little or no differ‐ ence between angels and ETs...or ghosts or demons for that matter.” After thinking deeply about the subject, Allan moves more towards the idea that, there is a tremendous amount of overlap

between the phenomena. “I do not be‐ lieve that they are all separate and indi‐ vidual because in many cases the phe‐ nomena described (spontaneous materi‐ alizations, strange creatures etc.), could apply to either event, as I had mentioned before. Much is about the context. In fact, the late author and speaker Dr. Terence McKenna once said something to the ef‐ fect that 'We are in contact with some‐ thing that disguises itself as extraterres‐ trial so as not to frighten us'. For myself I think that these beings are more likely to originate in another universe rather than our own. I say this because if, as has been claimed, they leave traces of material that cannot be identified on the periodic table then they cannot come from this universe. I say this because our universe and every‐ thing in it (providing the 'big bang' is cor‐ rect) has to contain exactly the same com‐ ponents in varying amounts irrespective of how far apart they are. Hence if we can't identify what any given material is, it cannot have come from our universe.”

about a man who claimed he was ab‐ ducted on a regular basis and had an on‐ going set of experiences in his home that had more in common with traditional hauntings than anything else. “When the guy saw objects in the sky he would have simultaneous encounters with entities that manifested in his home. Another significant case was the so‐called A70 Abduction (which I reinvestigated) where the abductee, once again, experienced paranormal events. It is almost as though some people are prone to phenomena of this kind and I'm not sure why, but I sus‐ pect that it may either be genetic or in how their neurology is 'wired up',” said Allan. Guiley, Reed, MacDonald, and Allan, each have decades of experience in the UFO and paranormal fields in writing, researching, and investigating most as‐ pects of these areas of esoteric knowl‐ edge. The fact that even they do not all agree on the answer to the crux of the question, “Do incidents reported as either paranormal or UFO activity originate from the same or a different source(s)?” re‐ flects the fact that the field has a long way to go before being able to establish ac‐ cepted explanations for important phe‐ nomena that can be adapted throughout the UFO and paranormal communities…

Aama: You Will Be Glorious My Daughter Fredrik Peeters Self Made Hero 978‐1‐910593‐00‐4 £12.99

Another triumph emerges from the enterprising publisher Self Made Hero with this, the fourth and final instalment of the truly splendid ‘Aama’ series of graphic novels. On the planet Ona(ji), the hero of the piece, the amnesiac Verloc Nim, after having faced all sorts of dangers and trials trying to recover the planet from a failed experiment called ‘Aama’. This experiment converted what was a desert world into one that became overrun with strange bio‐robotic animals and plants. Because of what Aama can do, Nim finds himself in possession of strange powers that have made him something more the human. The expedition of which Nim was originally part is now reduced to one person, him. As his daughter becomes endangered, Nim sets about trying to save her, but will he be able to and also reclaim the planet? Visually this book (a hardback) is both sumptuous and imaginatively rendered with the obvious talent of Peeters revealed on every page, with some of the single page illustrations of exhibition quality, a real triumph of the imagination and a fitting end to a fascinating series, well done.

A Future World Vision: The Reform of Common Sense in the 21st Century Richard Smith Vital Signs Publishing 978‐0‐9950608‐3‐0 £9.99

This new book is one of the most no‐nonsense, insightful and articulate of its kind that I have ever read. It is written with obvious passion and sincerity, is immensely well researched and above all immediately accessible. It is also extremely ‘dippable’ as well and there is a nugget of wisdom on almost every page. The book, (which carries a forward by the redoubtable and equally no‐ nonsense Andy Thomas) is absolutely essential reading for anyone trying to make sense of the world around them and why it seems to be going to Hell in a handcart. Smith has identified, (amongst other things) the curious fact that there seems to be a near‐constant 43 year link between events that have the potential to cause seismic upheavals in society starting, in compara‐ tively recent times, with the French Revolution. He goes on to show that governments of every political hue persistently and systematically lie about almost every facet of how they operate and unasham‐ edly manipulate our largely half‐asleep population into doing pretty much what they want them to. The book is written in the ‘here and now’ using 2015 as its vantage point looking back at what has befallen us in many areas due to (but not exclusively) wars, the banking system, propaganda and other largely man‐made catastrophes. The book covers a multitude of grey areas; far too many to cover in a review, but suffice to say that no stone is left unexamined in an effort to find a practical solution that might just help us find an answer before it’s too late. This is an absolute must‐read for anyone who has the desire to see the world around them, warts and all, as it is and if you’re spitting feathers by the time you finished reading it, then you have not understood the implications of what the pages contain. Go out, buy it and learn!

Title: Ghostly Encounters – Confessions of a Paranormal Investigator Authors: Jeff Scott Cole with Johnathon Robson Publisher: Skyhorse Publishing ISBN: 13:978‐1632205841 Price: $24.99 Reviewer: Paul Dale Roberts Jeff Scott Cole is a writer, former middle school teacher, and broken‐down archaeologist whose foray into the paranormal repre‐ sents a hiatus from the traditional history texts typically found in his personal stacks. Jeff is a member of the Society of American Archaeology and the Ohio Archaeological Council. Recently transplanted from Ohio’s “eerie” coast, he currently resides in At‐ lanta, Georgia. Johnathon Robson is a former death metal musician, music production artist, bank fraud investigator turned paranormal investigator. Johnathon grew up with an avid interest in the paranormal field and in 2011 he formed C‐Bus (Columbus) Paranormal. He resides in Mount Gilead, Ohio. For amateur ghost hunters that have no clue on how to ghost hunt, I truly recommend this book. It’s a fascinating read as the authors tell you about some of their experiences as a ghost hunter; with some comical mentions; as when you read about the Mentor Municipal Cemetery investigation. An amateur ghost hunter can use this book as their Bible for investigating. The authors explain the classifications of EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). If you ever wanted to know what a Class A EVP is, compared to a Class C, then this is the book for you. If you are interested in the many varieties of equipment that is used for paranormal investigating, with this book you get pictures of the equipment and detailed information about the equipment. I absolutely enjoyed their investigative stories. Reading these stories, you feel like you are right beside the authors investigating places like Ohio State Reformatory, Prospect Place Manor and other in‐ triguing locations. As you get further into this book, you have a section called Gizmos and Gadgets: A Cautionary Tale. You will love this section, just like I said; you can use this book as a Bible. I always say: “Do your homework before investigating.” This book can be your “homework”. At the end of the book, they have a superb guide to other ghost hunting groups from all 50 states. Ghostly Encounters is definitely a book that you won’t be able to put down. Absolutely remarkable!

AN AIR FORCE COLONEL’S THIRTY YEAR FIGHT TO SILENCE AN AUTHENTIC UFO WHISTLE BLOWER Like many within the subject of Ufology, I have taken the time to read the fascinating account of Larry Warren in ‘Left at East Gate’. A fascinating book compiled by Larry and Peter Robbins. It is... for me.. The most significant book you could ever read on the subject of UFO encounters. The incidents that surround Rendlesham forest have left their mark on the landscape of British ufology forever. The scale of secrecy and the attempt to silence Larry Warren’s efforts to get the truth out have now become obvious and shameful. Many of our readers will recall the book ’Encounters in Rendlesham Forest’ by Nick Pope, and the seemingly deliberate attempt to discredit the work Larry and Peter had carried out, also to purposely ignore their years of research and Larry’s association with this monumental incident. Larry and Peter’s response was swift and accurate in the release of ‘Deliberate Deception - a case of disinformation in the UFO community’. An absolute ‘Must Read’. But now, an even darker twist to the tale has emerged, as Colonel Charles Halt divulges in yet more slanderous remarks against Larry Warren. The time has come to finally set the record straight once and for all... 43

Halt in Woodbridge ‐ An Air Force Colonel’s thirty year fight to silence an authentic UFO whistle blower : By Peter Robbins & Steve Mera

As I sat reading through Peter Robbin’s latest book, I could feel the frustration building in me and at the same time an overwhelming amount of satisfaction. A thorough justification, brought about by years of onslaught, false accusations, and out right lies. For me… its easy to read be‐ tween the lines and spot a deliberate at‐ tempt to discredit a person. But Halt’s at‐ tempts run much deeper than that. His efforts to personally destroy Larry Warren have become a despicable venture. One which is obvious, that has no justification and one that should finally end…

publicly maintained that he holds no per‐ sonal grudge or ill will toward Larry as the person directly responsible for derailing a good part of his life. With respect, this is something I find difficult to believe. My reasons for writing this book are best summed up in the colonel’s words, “I’m tired of him putting lies out. You need to know the truth.” Our only difference of opinion being who the “him” referred to is. For me the extra‐large straw that broke the camel’s back came during the final ‘No person was ever honored for thirty or so minutes of Mr. Halt’s what he received. to return to England to speak about the Rendlesham Forest incident. The invitation was extended by the conference’s organ‐ izer, English UFO author and researcher John Hanson. this in association with con‐ ference co‐organizer and MC, David Bry‐ ant. The talk had originally been promoted as the “Col. Halt Woodbridge Briefing” with the name changed to "Haunted Skies Conference. Colonel Halt is coming to Woodbridge Community Hall Suffolk.” I’m guessing the name change reflected the sponsorship of Hanson, publisher of the Haunted Skies book series, now up to number 11. Volume Eight, published in 2013, is entirely dedicated to UK UFO events of 1980 with a particular focus on the RFI, bolstered by additional informa‐ tion on other anomalous events also occur‐ ring that year. In Hanson’s words: “In respect of (Volume 8 ‐1980) we con‐ sulted on many occasions with Colonel Charles Halt, who was the Deputy Base Commander. He not only agreed to assist us but has recommended the value of reading our books, which we regard as a privilege. In addition to this, we have out‐ lined various examples of what may well be regarded as paranormal phenomena, which is still taking place in the forest to this present day.” Some months prior to the talk, word went out that the speaker would not be taking or answering any questions about the re‐ marks he would be making that day. Not long afterward Larry Warren, first night witness John Burroughs, selected other RFI witnesses and myself learned we would not be welcome to attend, even if we paid our twenty pound entry fee. This led to my contacting John Hanson and asking him to relay a brief message to Mr. Halt for me. It was, if I were able to attend (I wasn’t), would I be allowed entry if I gave him my word not to make a scene or dis‐ rupt the proceedings, neither of which I’m known for. Charles re‐ sponded in the affirmative and retracted the ‘ban’ on me and me alone. There’s no question though that had I attended, and had he given the talk he did, I would most certainly would have been ejected from that hall. I was able to view the entire talk via a link provided by Ben Emlyn‐Jones, an Oxford‐ based radio host who had

been asked to record the lecture by Mr. Hanson. Ben filmed the entire talk from his tripod‐mounted video camera in full view of all from the front stage‐right side line. The video was posted on YouTube, but Emlyn‐ Jones was forced to remove it a few days later due to a dubious charge of copyright infringement. The charge was made by David but dismissed as without merit by YouTube officials. Ben’s video and part of the ‘walk in the Rendlesham Forest’ re‐ turned to YouTube as parts of a documen‐ tary on the event. On 13 August surprisingly even‐handed article on this brief ‘go‐to’ was posted on line by the writer who goes by the name of ‘Gilly.’ You can find it at: http:// www.anythingexcepthousework.co.uk/ copyright‐claim‐victory‐on‐youtube/ The full video can be accessed at: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Dh3uJl0OlgI The final part of his talk begins about two hours and twenty‐seven minutes into the YouTube upload. I suggest in the strongest possible terms that readers take the time to view and lis‐ ten to the colonel’s talk either beforehand or as they progress in their reading. Given my partisan position in all this it’s important that you be able to verify for yourselves that I haven’t misrepresented or in any way biased my responses against Mr. Halt. The reason some of the colonel’s tran‐ scribed remarks seem fragmented is be‐ cause Emlyn‐Jones’ camera was unable to pick up all of the dialogue and the audio system in the hall was found wanting. If I’ve misinterpreted a word or phrase as a result it was unintentional. If I were stupid enough to have done so and caught by a wary reader my reputation as an investiga‐ tive writer would suffer deservedly. During this investigation I’ve repeatedly returned to the text of both editions of Left At East Gate as well as relevant documents, memos, letters, maps, reports, Air Force manuals, photographs, testimony, tran‐ scripts, recorded conversations and part of Larry’s service record. Every one of Mr. Halt’s charges are reviewed and responded to here with not a single one missed or edited out. I had one major my goal in writ‐ ing this. These attacks need to be seen for what they are, and they need to stop, and stop for good. It’s my hope that the docu‐ mented information in this book will help to do just that. Had the colonel decided to leave public life with a talk dedicated to what he and his men experienced, then gone on to share his thoughts, comments, reflections and

memories from his unique vantage as a command officer, he could have left the stage with his head held relatively high. What a shame he decided to add charac‐ ter assassination and disinformation to his list of subjects. It’s not without some irony that the only person worthy of our admi‐ ration and respect at the end of this story is the attacked, not attacker, and in no uncertain terms. Peter Robbins.

AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ!

‘Since the early 1990s myself along with many other researchers throughout the UK have visited Rendlesham forest and are well versed in regards the events that took place there. I recall my first reading of ‘Left at East Gate’ by Larry Warren and Peter Robbins. After finishing it, I turned to the front... And read it again. I simply could not digest the shocking incidents that had taken place those dark December nights back in 1980. I have to admire Larry for his bravery in being the first witness to come forward about this incident. A very gutsy thing to do. Something I probably would never have talked of. An incredible case with an overwhelming amount of evidence. For me... It is the most significant case ever disclosed. For Larry, he has been targeted a number of times over the years by ill‐ educated researchers and sceptics alike, however, none more so than the accusations and out right lies of Colonel Charles Halt; in an attempt to discredit Larry and his testimony. A testimony that has recently been corroborated by Adrian Bustinza another witness to the incidents. Most will be aware of Nick Popes attempt at compiling an accurate account of the Rendlesham incident in his book, ‘Encounters in Rendlesham Forest’. When reading this book, the first thing that came to mind was... ’What a Sham!’ It would seem that Nick’s purpose non‐inclusion of Larry Warren’s testimony and the many years of investi‐ gative research Larry and Peter had conducted as well as their book ’Left at East Gate’ had sparked suggestions of disinformation and a deliberate attempt to play down the incident and what truly took place. Of course, a quick and justified response came in the way of Peter Robbins book ’Deliberate Deception ‐ A case of disinformation in the UFO community’. An incredibly insightful book in regards the incidents surrounding Rendlesham Forest and Bentwaters military base. For me... Its all about the ‘Evidence’. As a investigative researcher with 32 years in the field I have come across countless claims with a lack of supportive, or quantifiable evidence. That was until I read a news item many years ago about a Larry Warren and the incidents that he had witnessed whilst serving in the military. Finally... Something I could get my teeth into. Of course, numerous other researchers had already done some great work and a few books were released on their findings. But it was not until I read ‘Left at East Gate’, I visited the location. I have since visited several times. Many may have thought Larry Warren’s claims to have initially been a bit hard to digest, due to the lack of other witnesses coming forward, but... Did anyone ever consider that further witnesses were just too scared or worried of being ridiculed? As the years passed it would seem this is exactly the case. Larry Warren and Peter Robbins have painstakingly provided mountains of evidence in support of Larry being posted at Bentwaters at the time of the incident and also provided corroborated testimony in regards the incredible UFO incidents that took place there. To have a remark on this case one certainly needs to read ‘Left at East Gate’ and numerous other documents / books and also to have followed witness statements and lectures carried out by those there at the time. After which, you obtain a clear picture. A picture that demonstrates the long term efforts by Colonel Charles Halt to discredit Larry Warren to the public and press with shameful accusations and out right lies. Why? You may ask yourself! Has this officer not supported the younger military officers testimonies. What is his reason to discredit Larry and play down the most vital part of this famous UFO incident? The plot forever thickens... Steve Mera: Phenomena Magazine

Title: The Walking Dead: The Complete Fifth Series Main Cast: Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Melissa McBride, Chad. L, Colman Distributor: Entertainment One Price: £25 Blu‐Ray, £20 DVD This critically acclaimed (and rightly so) TV series has to be one of the most consistently well acted and imaginative for a long time. The fact that we are now on series six (plus a spin‐off series) is a testament to its sheer staying power. Series Five opens where the previous series left off with Rick Grimes and his friends imprisoned in a railway truck after having reached the dubious sanctuary of the near‐legendary ‘Terminus’. Little did they know that the people who operate Terminus are the cannibalistic ‘Hunters’ who systematically lure, trap, butcher then eat anyone unfortunate enough to arrive at their gates. However Rick and co manage to get away, which obviously involves much blood, guts and general mayhem, and the ‘Walkers’ (as the zombies are called) get into the facility. The overall series plot is similar to those before it with the group trying to make their way to a genuine safe haven, but it is enlivened by the presence of a small group who are trying to get to a facility in Washington in an attempt to find a cure for the condition that converts anyone who dies into a zombie. Although consistently good, the first episode, ‘No Sanctuary’, (there are sixteen in the series) is especially good as indeed are ‘Slabtown’, ‘Consumed’, ‘Coda’ and the last in this collection ‘Conquer’. For fans of the show this is a must‐buy, and for those who enjoy their horror both visceral and gritty this is exactly what you want: bring on the next series please. The Deadly Mantis Nathan Duran Craig Stevens, William Hopper, Alix Talton, Pat Conway Fabulous Films Ltd/ Freemantle Media Enterprise £14.99

This is another of the many ‘creature features’ that dominated much of the output in 1950’s horror cinema from the USA. Scorpi‐ ons, spiders, ants, and wasps, they were all there: I know because I saw most of them in the cinema first time round. However, this classic offering has an enormous, carnivorous praying mantis, which, following a series of volcanic events which melt the ice, being awoken from its million year sleep in the Arctic. This starts a chain of gory, blood splattered encounters between the creature and the US military culminating in its arrival in Washington DC. Again there is more gun play and the mantis tries to get into the tunnels and storm drains beneath the city, but finally it is killed by our intrepid hero. Not all that scary, but still well worth a look. Title: Infernal Director: Bryan Coyne Main Cast: Heather Adair, Alyssa Koerner, Jose Rosette Distributor: Signature Entertainment Price: £9.99 This rather slow supernatural thriller is strange blend of The Blair Witch Project, The Omen and Paranormal Phenomena, in fact the camerawork looks a lot like Paranormal Phenomena and the story is told via hand held video footage, fortunately it does pick up a bit as the plot progresses. The story concerns a young couple whose young daughter is; well, a bit ‘odd’. You can tell that things will not go well a few minutes into the film when the prospective husband gives his girlfriend an engagement ring. Suddenly a crucifix on the wall behind them spontaneously turns upside down. The film has a bit of everything, including a demon that lives in the daughters closet and seems to be keeping an eye on her. The action, such as it is, is kept for the last reel of the film and trust me, it does not go well for the parents. Overall this is a fairly satisfying if derivative film with few shocks for diehard horror fans. Title: The Creature Walks Amongst us Director: John Sherwood Main Cast Jeff Morrow, Rex reason, Leigh Snowdon Distributor: Fabulous Films Ltd/ Freemantle Media Enterprises Price: £14.99 This B&W offering dating from 1956 is the third and last of the ‘Gill Man’ franchise and is very much of its (much more innocent) time, when all you needed to have a creature movie was a man in a rubber suit, which is exactly what you have here. This time the unfortunate creature i.e. the Gill Man (played by an un‐credited Ricou Browning) is captured and taken to a faculty to undergo further experiments to advance the race‐for‐space, which was very much in vogue at the time. However, the creature is accidentally set on fire and through this it is found to have lung tissue and can be transformed into a land creature rather that water based. Needless to say the plans go awry and the after wreaking much havoc, which includes killing the bad guy, the creature is seen head‐ ing for the sea and probable certain death. BTW this film was considered truly scary on its original release, but as with much else it is now more nos‐ talgic than anything, but still entertaining. 47

There are only a handful of dedicated UFO conferences held in the UK. Since the demise of the Quest International / UFO Magazine conferences held in Leeds a number of years ago, it would seem that such events were slowly but surely disappearing. The lack of publications on the subject was also to hit an all time low. And... Just when you thought the final candle of interest was to be blown out, a new publication hit the internet. UFO Truth Magazine by Gary Heseltine breathed new air into the subject of Ufology, especially throughout the UK. A publication similar to the well known and loved ‘UFO Magazine’ by our late friend Graham Birdsall. A magazine full of up to date facts and sightings throughout the world of Ufology and also dedicating its pages to UK UFO incidents. Quite simply, UFO Truth Magazine conference has now become the leading UFO event in the UK with sales of over 500 tickets across two days. The event put together by Gary Heseltine and his team was first class, extremely professional and most of all relaxed. Co‐Host Larry Warren, the principle witness to the incidents that unfolded during December of 1980 in Rendlesham forest welcomed the event and did a fantastic job of introducing nu‐ merous lecturers, of which were some of the most recognised in the subject of Ufology... Gary Heseltine’s lecture was fascinating and covered many aspects of Ufology and also the state of Ufology in the UK. He pointed out the importance of such events and a necessity to publicize interest in the subject so to continue providing events and conferences. Stanton’s lecture was delivered with precision and accuracy as ever, talking of his early experiences of lecturing and associates he was involved with. He went on to talk of the impor‐ tance of the MJ‐12 documents, their secrecy and implications of its contents. An incredible lecture that was a pleasure to witness. It was great to see Stanton as I had not talked with him since the late 1990’s during an event in the UK. As every Richard D. Hall’s lecture was one of intrigue and secrecy. He talked of mass disappearances of livestock here in the UK and other similar events that surrounded certain locations with a high amount of UFO sightings and activity. It was a pleasure to see my good friend David Cayton at the event who had also been involved in numerous investigations with Richard, one of which is a recently discovered mutilated horse in Leicester which had hit the local press. A.J. Gevaerd had travelled over from Brazil to talk about how the Brazilian government have teamed up with ufologists to discuss the release of UFO information. Something you don’t often hear about! A.J. Went on to talk about the Colores incident and Project Saucer. One of the most significant cases in Ufology involving the possibility of captured UFO occupants. An amazing case that deserves worldly interest. Dave Hodrien of the Birmingham UFO Group (BUFOG) took to the stage in a great lecture about a particular contactee he had been interviewing in regards his experience of E.T. Con‐ tact and covert government officials following him and monitoring his telephone calls. A truly fascinating case that Dave delivered well. A nice finish‐ ing touch was to see a short video the contactee had made personally for the audience due to him not being available to attend on the day. Suzanne Hansen, the leading UFO investigator and Contactee from New Zealand talked of her personal experiences whilst meeting intelligent life‐forms from another world and whilst being on board their crafts. A very thought provoking lecture. Gary Heseltine also took this opportunity to interview Larry Warren about some of the recent news in regards the Rendlesham forest incident. Larry explained his difficulties with distributing his information and the problems he had encountered on the way. He also informed the audience of a re‐ cent interview a fellow military security officer stationed at RAF Bentwaters had done. He had confirmed Larry’s account of the incidents. A great interview. A.J. and Stanton had also been personally interviewed on stage both of which revealed some interesting facts. It was also fun to watch the UFO Mastermind quiz Gary had constructed. Though only four took part in the quiz, it came down to a head to head battle between good friends Ben‐ Emlyn Jones and Andy Young. With one final question Andy managed to sneak ahead and win the quiz. A brilliant and fun part of the event which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. All in all, an incredible event. Congratulations to Gary Heseltine in... not only having the leading UFO publication in the United Kingdom, but also the No.1 UFO conference in the country. A special thanks to Gary’s family... his wife Lynn and his daughters who helped organise and run the event. Finally a thanks to all those assistants that helped put this event together including Colin the tech guy who did a first class job. If you by chance missed this amazing event... Don’t Panic! Gary assures me that next years event will be even better. (I find it hard to imagine how he could top this years). A new location in Holmfirth may also be on the cards. Last but least, don’t forget to sub‐ scribe to UFO Truth Magazine, a brilliant read. : www.ufotruthmagazine.co.uk PM 48

The second Golden Age of Horror was born premature. For though associated with the 1970s, it began in 1968, with the arrival of two films that would forever change the genre landscape: George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead and Roman Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby. Redefining the zombie as a vehicle for sociopolitical commentary, Romero’s low‐budget shocker focused on death, the theme with which all hu‐ man experience ends and with which the horror genre is most closely associated. Polanski’s film, con‐ versely, explored the other end of the spectrum, dealing with the fears that can surround maternity and birth, where all our lives begin. This was horror at its most (literally) conceptual, and it would beget a pre‐ occupation with panic‐stuffed pregnancy that the genre has ever since been unable to get fully out of its system. INFERNAL arrives on DVD from 24th August, 2015, courtesy of Signature Entertainment in which the unrivalled joy of a newborn baby rapidly descends into fear of the highest order, we take a look at the most gruesome horror films that feature pregnancy, birth and disturbed children. INFERNAL As newlywed couple Sophia and Nathan move into their new home together Sophia delivers the news that she’s pregnant. Nathan digests the news, proposes to her and they get married, hoping to live happily ever after... The couple welcome their first child into the world shortly after getting mar‐ ried, but their joy quickly turns to panic when the young girl starts acting strangely. The unrivalled joy of a newborn baby rapidly descends into fear of the highest order when unexplainable things start happening around the house. Fearing their daughter could be possessed, the parents call in a priest to perform an exorcism, but when that goes horribly wrong, the parents start to wonder if they will ever be able to rid their daughter of the evil power lurking within her... Rosemary’s Babies Caught between her oldworld Catholicism and her hip metropolitan modernity, Rosemary Woodhouse (Mia Farrow) has just moved into a New York apartment with a shady history, hoping to make “a new beginning” there. Impregnated while passed out in bed, Rosemary grows ever more anxious and paranoid about the intentions of her self‐absorbed, controlling husband Guy (John Cassavetes) and the interfering old couple next door – and once the seed of an idea about witchcraft has been planted inside her, it grows and grows as her pregnancy continues, until eventually some sort of truth must out. Key to Polanski’s film is the question, never fully resolved, of whether Rosemary is genuinely falling prey to a Satanic coven, or suffering from “the pre [and post] partum crazies”, as she struggles, like all mothers, to come to terms with the thing growing inside her, both a part of herself and something other. For the society that Rosemary is entering – and helping to build – fills her with doubt, reflecting the ambivalent feelings that many would have harboured about the changing world of the Sixties. Though born of the recombinant materials of the past, babies are the future – and in turbulent ’68, the future, though pregnant with revolutionary possibilities, seemed very uncertain. Relocated to contemporary Paris and considerably expanded (padded, even) in length, Agnieszka Holland’s 2014 two‐part reimagining for television fills in the narrative gaps, focusing as much on the Satanic seduction of Guy as the infernal insemination of Rosemary. Yet for all its creepy set‐pieces, this Rosemary remake entirely aborts the original’s crucial ambiguity, and so throws out the baby with the bathwater. Polanski’s is definitely the daddy. Alien Invasions The biology of birth – the blood, the pain, all that icky anatomy – makes it the perfect subject for body horror, and in particular for male anxieties about feminine physicality and function. So in Ridley Scott’s ‘seminal’ SF‐horror Alien (1979), the conventional modalities of reproduction are overturned as Executive Officer Kane (John Hurt, indeed) is orally raped by a newly hatched alien ‘facehugger’, and then internally incubates and gives chest‐bursting birth to the creature’s next lifestage – aboard a spaceship whose computer system is ironically named ‘Mother’. By the time the film’s heroine, Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), has out‐toughed and outlived many male colleagues and crash‐landed into an all‐male penal planet in David Fincher’s long‐ gestating Alien3 (1992), she is herself carrying the embryo of an alien, and struggling to hold onto her own agency as everyone wants a piece of mother and unborn daughter. Scott’s prequel Prometheus (2012), ‘consciously uncoupled’ from the franchise that birthed it, sees sterile archaeologist Shaw (Noomi Rapace) undergoing immaculate conception via her partner’s alien‐infected sperm, and then forced to perform an invasive Caesarean section upon herself using surgical equipment designed exclusively for men. Meanwhile, the Strause brothers’ hybridised spin‐off sequel Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem (2007) shows a ‘Predalien’ let loose in a maternity ward, graphically pumping multiple large ova down the throat of an already gravid woman whose waters have just broken. It is a grotesque spectacle not easily forgotten, even if it is perhaps over‐egging the pregnancy pudding. Big Babies With its extra‐terrestrial invaders, weird face rapes and rapid gestations, Harry Bromley Davenport’s Xtro (1982) might sound like an English Alien ri‐ poff, but the film also ‘delivers’ something new to the reproductive cycle: the sight of a recently impregnated woman giving birth, agonising and ulti‐ mately fatal to herself, to a fully grown man who then, as the pièce de résistance, bites through his own umbilical cord. Not that such extreme births cannot be survived. In Miike Takashi’s unclassifiable Gozu (2003), the yakuza Minami (Hideko Sone) is tasked with 49

escorting Ozaki (Aikawa Sho), a senior ‘brother’ for whom Minami harbours repressed homoerotic feelings, to a strange town to bump him off. In fact Ozaki has a heart attack en route, but Minami must spend the rest of the film searching for Ozaki’s missing corpse. In the final sequence, Ozaki wit‐ nesses a young woman (Yoshino Kimika) give birth to the fully‐formed and now living Ozaki – and we last see the three of them walking arm in arm down the street, in a ménage à trois where sexuality has become incestuously confused. Even that is topped, though, by the threesome in Z is for Zygote, Chris Nash’s contribution to The ABCs of Death 2 (2014). A man heads out while his wife is in labour, instructing her to eat ‘portlock root’ to “slow down the baby until I can get here from town.” Cut to 13 years later, and the woman, now enormously pregnant, conducts lengthy conversations about her sense of abandonment with the grown child that is still in her belly. When the portlock runs out, the baby, promising it will never leave its mother, guts and bones her from the inside and fills out her skin, essentially merging itself with her body. Finally the husband does return, hoping to try make another baby with his ‘wife’.] Labour Pains What with the morning sickness, the discomfort of increased weight, and eventually the intense, body‐splitting trauma of labour and delivery, preg‐ nancy is associated with physical pain and maternal sacrifice (or ‘materdom’). Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo’s bludgeoning Inside (2007) drama‐ tises all the torment of this process, as the very pregnant Sarah (Alysson Paradis), who recently survived a head‐on collision that took her husband’s life, spends one last night alone with her mixed feelings on impending maternity (she is scheduled for an induced birth in the morning). Except that she is not alone – for a mysterious woman in black (Béatrice Dalle) has come inside, looking like death itself, to claim her due. Over one long night the two will bloodily contest ownership of Sarah’s unborn foetus, in a grimly grotesque parody of the struggles and travails of birth. The short sharp shock of a car accident is often used as a vivid analogue of birth pangs. Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook (2014) opens with a primal scene, as Amelia Vanek is being rushed to hospital in labour, a violent crash both kills her husband Oskar and ushers in the arrival of her son Samuel (Noah Wiseman) – and the deep scars that this simultaneous death‐ and birthday leaves in Amelia will, seven years later, come back to haunt the Vaneks. Similarly, in Paul Solet’s Grace (2009), Madeline (Jordan Ladd) is widowed by an accident that also kills the baby in her belly, but she refuses to let go, insisting on carrying the dead foetus to full term – while her post‐menopausal mother‐in‐law Vivian (Gabrielle Rose) wants to mother (and breastfeed) the baby herself. All that maternal madness engenders a miracle – and a monster – that “needs special food.” Madeline’s cat Jonesy shares its name with the on‐board pet in Alien – much as Grace shares that film’s interest in perverted birth. Meanwhile, Zach Parker’s Proxy (2013) begins with what ought to be every expectant mother’s nightmare. As Esther (Alexia Rasmussen) leaves an ob/ gyn checkup, she is attacked in the street, knocked unconscious, and then battered repeatedly about her pregnant belly with a brick. In emergency surgery, doctors remove her foetus by C‐section, too late to save it – and yet, as we gradually get to know the bruised Esther and another woman (Alexa Havins) whom she befriends at a child bereavement group, these two reveal themselves as like‐minded fantasists with some very strange ideas in embryo. And so it becomes clear that some women are maybe just not cut out to be mothers – except of invention. Engendered Birth If Alien presents male viewers with the nightmare of having to endure the kind of labour pain that so many women go through as a matter of course, then Jacob Vaughan’s Bad Milo! (2014) plays out the same fears for grotesque laughs. It opens with an ultrasound – but the patient is not a mother‐to‐ be, but Duncan (Ken Marino), and his ‘baby’ is in fact a large growth in his colon. That tumour will grow inside Duncan, and eventually, painfully, emerge from his rectum as Milo, the monstrous (yet baby‐like) incarnation of its stressed‐out host’s repressed id – and Duncan, despite his stated fear of parenthood, must learn not just to let out the beast (repeatedly), but to mother it. The final image of Matsumoto Hitoshi’s extreme sex comedy R100 (2013) is of its protagonist, the salaryman Takafumi Katayami (Ichi the Killer‘s Omori Nao), sporting his own very pregnant belly. The path that has led him to that state is hardly a straight one. With his wife in a three‐year coma, his son coming of age in a single‐parent family, and his own renascent, guilt‐riddled libido tearing him apart, Takafumi signs up with an exclusive gentlemen’s SM club, and learns painful lessons in how to combine the rôles of father, pervert and, yes, mother. Hybrid Gen(r)es Conception happens when sperm collides with egg, creating an admixture of two different genetic codes. Yet this need not be an altogether natural process. In David Cronenberg’s The Fly (1986), scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Golblum) finds himself in sexless genetic union with an insect via an experi‐ mental teleporter. Most of the film is concerned with Brundle’s tragic Kafka‐esque metamorphosis – but a key subplot sees Brundle impregnating his friend Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis) with his mutant seed. After having a nightmare in which she births a giant pupa, ‘Ronnie’ declares, “I want it out of my body now!” – but before she can have an abortion, Seth kidnaps her, hoping to fuse her, himself and their unborn baby into “a family of three merged together in one body.” Seth is killed before that can happen – but we never do find out what happens to their baby… at least, not until The Fly II. Genetics prove just as madly incestuous in Vincenzo Natali’s Splice (2009), in which childless biochemist couple Elsa (Sarah Polley) and Clive (Adrien Brody) unethically engineer a female creature from animal and human (indeed Elsa’s) DNA, and secretly raise it as both specimen and baby. Growing rapidly, the adolescent ‘Dren’ (Delphine Chanéac) seduces Clive before changing sex and raping Elsa. The film ends with a pregnant Elsa agreeing to carry to term the monster within. If both The Fly and Splice represent successful genetic fusions of the science fiction and horror genres, then Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Spring (2014) is an unexpected hybrid of horror and romance – allowing this article to end on something like a positive note. The heroine of Spring, Louise (Nadia Hilker), is a mutant who can regenerate herself – and remain eternally youthful – by getting pregnant every 22 years and then using the embryonic stem cells to metamorphose into a rejuvenated merger of herself and her partner. Only now, for the first time in two millennia, she is falling in love with her ‘donor’, Evan (Lou Taylor Pucci) – even if that love may lead to a more normal birth, and the passing down of Louise’s freakish physical makeup to the next generation. This is a film of monstrous transformations and aberrant bio‐ chemistry, but at its heart Spring addresses the Darwinian pursuit of self‐replication that lies at the heart of every procreative act. In its exploration of both mortality and the infinite via a very unusual form of pregnancy, Spring delivers alright... 50

‘First thing you notice about this book is its cover which gabs your attention immediately... But what lies between its covers is much more significant. The author James Welch has done a fantastic job, dedicating his book to the memory of UFO researcher Graham Birdsall and the excellent work he had pioneered with UFO Maga‐ zine. The book was reviewed by author and researcher Malcolm Robinson and the introduction provided by author and researcher Ron Halliday. It consists not only of the authors personal sightings but also his investigations, official responses and much more’.‘Its also a fantastic research book that covers reported incidents chronologically along with many NASA UFO incidents. What a great resource tool. For researchers, Its the sort of book you keep close to your computer as its easy to grab and turn straight to cer‐ tain dates and incidents’. ‘James also provides photographic analysis of NASA photos show‐ ing some strange anomalies’. ‘All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable read, with some detailed accounts of fascinating incidents and sightings... A few that even I was unaware of. A first class book that not only belongs on the shelves of enthusi‐ asts, but also researchers within the subject. A Must Read’! Steve Mera: PM

I was first introduced to Ghostcircle through Jamie Wilkins, the head of music for Ghostcircle. His enthusiastic accounts of his own experiences in physical medium‐ ship circles naturally intrigued me, and I was later introduced to the medium that conducted these circles, Patrick McNamara. My first impression of Patrick showed that he was a good humoured person and also very down‐to‐earth in his approach to the paranormal and his explanations of how the ‘spirit world’ interacts with us were insight‐ ful. Not long after this I was invited to take part in one of the circles, and so my journey with Ghostcircle began...

If you have never experienced a ‘spirit rescue’, it is one of the most amazing feelings – you can physically feel the op‐ pression lift as the spirit is released. Later on the same evening, Jamie and I were in our hotel room. There were two doors, a main outside door to the room itself and an inner door which led to the bedroom area. Around 1am we heard a loud knock‐ ing on our inside door. We both looked at each other – the outside door to our room was locked from the inside, we knew be‐ cause we had locked it after entering the room and both of us had checked this. We heard the knocking again, and realised

Anyone who has seen the Ghostcircle series on Sky TV will know that we travel quite a lot to differ‐ ent locations. Again, this was a new experience for me and it both thrilled and excited me to see a range of new places and coun‐ tries. The first place we travelled to abroad was Holland, where we filmed in Binnenveld House, and met Johan Vlemmix who is a friend of the Dutch Royal Family. Johan recounted his experiences in the house to us, including hearing unexplained noises and poltergeist activity (a drill he had been using was unplugged from the wall socket, and de‐ spite this it somehow mys‐ teriously switched on). As I walked around this house with the rest of the team, I was amazed at some of the things we experienced. We picked up amaz‐ ing EVP’s and at one point while filming one of the chandeliers in the room started swinging, even though there were no open windows or breezes and there was a second chandelier in the same room that remained completely still – further confirming that the movement we were seeing may have been due to paranormal activity. One of the most memorable places we filmed in was in Italy. While filming there we stayed in a hotel next to the Vatican. One evening we conducted a small circle where a spirit spoke through Patrick McNa‐ mara who was in trance and we managed to rescue and release some of the other spirits who had become trapped there.

this knocking was definitely on the inner door, not the outside door to the room. As we were thinking over this, we saw the door slowly start to open. ‘Go away!’ Ja‐ mie said firmly. I don’t think the spirit took kindly to this because there was one final loud thump before it went quiet again. What made this more peculiar was that when we relayed this to the rest of the Ghostcircle team the next morning, they said they had the same experience at the same time as we did in their room further down the corridor, and we later found out that a monk used to patrol the corridor where our rooms were and knock on eve‐ rybody’s door at 1am to wake them up for prayers. We also stayed in Malaspina Cas‐ tle where once again we encountered a range of strange experiences. 53

We had settled down for the night in our room when we started hearing a dog bark‐ ing. Now, the castle did have a resident dog, although he was kept out in the court‐ yard during the night in order that he should not disturb the guests. The dog we could hear was barking outside the door to our room. We could also hear scratching at the door and we then heard this dog barking inside our room. To fur‐ ther accentuate this, the resident dog of the castle then started barking outside in the courtyard. As well as this, I saw a white spirit figure move from the door to the en‐ suite bathroom, across the room to where a desk stood, before it disappeared. When I relayed this to Jamie, he told me that he had heard the bathroom taps being turned on and off only moments before I had seen this figure. There was no doubt that this castle was certainly haunted, especially when one of the other Ghost‐ circle team members explained the following morning that he had also had paranormal activity in the room where he had slept, and had felt somebody poking him throughout the night, despite being alone in the room. While in Italy I also had the unique opportunity to have my portrait painted while exploring the night life of Rome. One of the members of the team took a photograph while I was having my portrait painted, and we were surprised to discover later that a spirit figure appeared in the image, distorting part of the photo. We have also travelled to other countries in Europe including Austria, where we filmed in Moosham Castle and had the good fortune to meet the director of the castle, Theresita Wilczek Khan, who kindly showed us the rooms of the castle includ‐ ing a 'judging' room and torture chamber, before we conducted a circle later that night with excellent results. We also visited Verona ‐ where we visited the balcony where the story of Romeo and Juliet was set (Casa Di Giulietta). We also travelled to Ireland, where we filmed in Enniscorthy

Adventures with Ghostcircle: By Hannah Barrick

Castle alongside the Wexford Paranormal group. We managed to get great results once again and experienced a range of phe‐ nomena, including ‘direct voice’ where a baby was heard crying in the next room. All of the circle sitters were present in the same room, there were no other people in the building and certainly no young children and yet every person present heard this baby crying in the next room – intriguing to say the least. Of course, there will always be alternate views and logical explanations offered to account for these strange occur‐ rences, but everyone is given their own individual proofs should they decide to look for it, and so the best piece of advice that can be offered is to examine the evidence yourself. Everyone is welcome to their own viewpoint, but for me the evidence speaks for itself, especially when we conduct cir‐ cles in a controlled setting and multiple people experience the same phenomena at the same time.

Of course, travelling as extensively as we do means there are plenty of opportunities to explore each country and what they have to offer. In between the circles and mediumis‐ tic work that we do we explored our sur‐ roundings and visited places such as the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps in Rome, the leaning tower of Pisa. While in Amster‐ dam we saw the house where Anne Frank and her family had hidden during the holo‐ caust and later, as we drove through Italy, we saw seeing many stunning sights such as Monte Carlo Bay and the rolling mountains and hills. In Luxembourg we smoked cigars in a pub as it’s currently still legal to do so there. My journey with Ghostcircle has been a fulfilling, rich experience with highs and lows, where I have had many memorable experiences. One of the main things I have learned on my journey is that anything is possible if you go about it in the right way. The only limitations are those which we impose upon ourselves through our own perceptions and views, and it has been a privilege learning about the spirit world, how it interacts with us and the amazing phenomena that can occur given the right conditions. Ghostcircle started this year, airing their first season on Sky channel 261. They are currently showing season 2 which is also available on Freesat 402, Freeview 254 and on BT TV. Shown every Friday at 8.00pm GMT. Season 2 started on October 2nd and is currently running. ‘An interesting low budget TV series. Though I have not seen anything convincing as yet, the show does provide some thought provoking footage, especially the flower turning upon request. Certainly intriguing... Well worth tuning in just see that. Let me know your opinion’... Steve Mera: PM 54
