Maps è un magazine online, con cadenza trimestrale, che si pone l’obiettivo di indagare l’area del Mediterraneo partendo dalla pubblicazione di progetti fotografici indipendenti. Tema del primo numero è URBANISM: un’indagine sugli ambienti antropizzati, le cui strutture, fisiche e concettuali, sono il risultato della presenza e dell’attività umana.

Maps is an online magazine published quarterly that aims to research and showcase independent and innovative photographic projects about the Mediterranean area. The first issue is all about URBANISM: an investigation into the man-made environment, whose structures, whether physical or conceptual, are the result of human presence and activity.

L’area del Mediterraneo di notte, vista da un satellite / Mediterranean area at night, views from a satellite.

E d i t o r’s No t e A r i a n n a A n g e l o n i - Te o d o r a M a l a v e n d a Siamo eredi del Mediterraneo, un mare che solo tramite una breve fessura dialoga con il concetto più esaustivo ed assoluto di Oceano.

Siamo qui ora, nel punto cruciale di un luogo del mondo che ha esercitato la sua fondamentale influenza nello sviluppo delle civiltà umane ed urbane. Abbiamo assorbito gran parte degli impulsi che in questa complessa frazione di mondo circolano vorticosi, si rimescolano, creano influenze e nuove geografie, non si riconoscono, si rinnegano, per poi confrontarsi alla chiusura di un nuovo ciclo, quando gli ex migranti accolgono altri, nuovi, migranti. È questo per noi il Mediterraneo, una terrazza sconfinata dalla quale si affacciamo le genti di tre diversi continenti: Europa, Africa, Asia. Una mappa di eventi, legami, spostamenti, alleanze, incomprensioni, transiti, correnti calde e fredde che si scontrano e ci piovono addosso.

We are heirs of the Mediterranean, a sea able to converse with the most complete and unlimited concept of Ocean just through a short split.

Now we are here, within the crucial point of a place in the world that has exercised its fundamental influence on the development of human and urban civilization. We have absorbed most of those impulses that in this complex fraction of the world are circulating in a whirling way, shuffling again, creating influences and new geographies; they do not recognize themselves, they deny each other, to finally contrast one another at the end of a new cycle, when former migrants welcome others, new ones, migrants. This is the Mediterranean for us, a boundless terrace from where people coming from three different continents are looking out: Europe, Africa and Asia. A map of events, connections, movements, alliances, misunderstandings, transits, hot and cold currents that collide one other pouring down us.

Maps Magazine è il nostro sguardo fugace su questo spazio dai confini pericolosi e dagli incroci sorprendenti, attraverso il veicolo espressivo della fotografia contemporanea indipendente che, agli occhi attenti di chi è abbastanza curioso per guardarla, amplifica le sue due dimensioni in una moltitudine di geografie emotive e input sensoriali. Ci poniamo l’obiettivo, ambizioso ma onesto, di indagare le forme fisiche, innaturali e umane della nostra mappa, con uno sguardo al di fuori.

Come i raggi di una misteriosa circonferenza che dal centro si fanno frecce e puntano tutt’attorno: un approccio impulsivo e centrifugo.

Maps Magazine is our fleeting view of this space with dangerous borders and amazing crossings, through the expressive vehicle of contemporary independent photography which widens its Two dimensions into a multitude of emotional geographies and sensorial inputs, under those watchful eyes of people curious enough to observe them. Our ambitious but honest object is to investigate on the physical, unnatural and human forms of our map, with an external view. As the spokes of a mysterious circumference forms arrows from the centre pointing all around: an impulsive and centrifugal approach.

URBANISM is the theme of the first Maps Magazine’s open call.

Nell’ultimo secolo e mezzo il Mediterraneo ha subito una profonda e radicale trasformazione economica, sociale e demografica che ha avuto inevitabili ripercussioni sulle forme del territorio, sul paesaggio, sui modi di vivere, sulle identità, sul pensiero.

Moltitudini di persone si sono spostate dalle campagne e dalle aree rurali agli agglomerati urbani. Dal vivere estensivo diffuso, al vivere intensivo, compresso, rapido, iper produttivo ed energivoro. Oggi guardiamo nuovamente agli ambienti naturali dai quali eravamo fuggiti. Con una sensibilità nuova e con la consapevolezza che non sarà facile smantellare la nostra acquisita attitudine di specie urbana per tornare a dilatare il tempo e i suoi ricatti.

Over the last half-century the Mediterranean has suffered a profound and radical economic, social and demographic transformation that has had inevitable repercussions on the territory’s shapes, the landscape, the ways of living, identities and on thought. Multitudes of people have moved from the countryside and rural areas to urban agglomerations. From spread extensive living to intensive, compressed, fast, hyper productive and energivorous living. Today we are once more looking at natural environments, from which we have escaped, with a new sensitivity and with the awareness that it will not be easy to dismantle our acquired ability of urban species to return widening time and its blackmails.

“Al centro di Fedora, metropoli di pietra grigia, sta un palazzo di metallo con una sfera di vetro in ogni stanza. Guardando dentro ogni sfera si vede una città azzurra che è il modello d’un’altra Fedora. Sono le forme che la città avrebbe potuto prendere se non fosse, per una ragione o per l’altra, diventata come oggi la vediamo. In ogni epoca qualcuno, guardando Fedora qual era, aveva immaginato il modo di farne la città ideale, ma mentre costruiva il suo modello in miniatura già Fedora non era più la stessa di prima, e quello che fino a ieri era stato un suo possibile futuro ormai era solo un giocattolo in una sfera di vetro. Fedora ha adesso nel palazzo delle sfere il suo museo: ogni abitante lo visita, sceglie la città che corrisponde ai suoi desideri, la contempla immaginando di specchiarsi nella peschiera delle meduse che doveva raccogliere le acque del canale (se non fosse stato prosciugato), di percorrere dall’alto del baldacchino il viale riservato agli elefanti (ora banditi dalla città), di scivolare lungo la spirale del minareto a chiocciola (che non trovò più la base su cui sorgere). Nella mappa del tuo impero, o grande Kan, devono trovar posto sia la grande Fedora di pietra sia le piccole Fedore nelle sfere di vetro. Non perché tutte ugualmente reali, ma perché tutte solo presunte. L’una racchiude ciò che è accettato come necessario mentre non lo è ancora; le altre ciò che è immaginato come possibile e un minuto dopo non lo è più.”

“In the center of Fedora, that gray stone metropolis, stands a metal building with a crystal globe in every room. Looking into each globe, you see a blue city, the model of a different Fedora. These are the forms the city could have taken if, for one’ reason or another, it had not become what we see today. Lo chiamiamo così seguendo l’etimologia latina, Mediterraneus, che significa in mezzo alle terre. Una grande, enorme pozzanghera che nel corso dei millenni ha messo in relazione le terre che in esso si affacciavano. Infatti, Wikipedia mi informa che la maggior parte di esse ha conservato questo senso di medio, in mezzo, nelle rispettive denominazioni:

The Mediterranean Sea. We call it this way following the Latin etymology, Mediterraneus, which means between lands. A big, huge puddle that over millennia had put in relation the lands looking out on it. Wikipedia informs me indeed that most parts of those lands have preserved this sense of common, in the middle, in the respective denominations:

Solo l’impero Romano, nel suo essere impero, ha preferito un altro approccio e l’ha chiamato Mare Nostrum, il nostro mare. Nostro, mica degli altri.

Only the Romans’ Empire, within its essence of being an empire, chose another approach and called it Mare Nostrum, our sea. Ours, not others’ one.

In ogni caso, la toponomastica ci fornisce un esemplare punto di partenza per iniziare a mettere a fuoco di cosa parliamo quando parliamo di Mediterraneo: si parla di mare, certo, ma anche (e soprattutto) di terra, di popoli, di identità e di appartenenze, di migrazioni, di fughe, di viaggi, di tragedie, di esplorazioni. Di insediamenti umani e umane devastazioni, di luce (il Mar Bianco) e di stratificazioni. Si parla di epica e di commedia, di vita e di morte. E di molto altro. Che ci appartiene, che in qualche modo riconosciamo.

In any case, the toponymy gives us an exemplary starting point to start focusing on what are we talking about when we talk about the Mediterranean: we talk about sea, of course, but also (and above all) about land, people, identities and belongings, migration, escapes, travels, tragedies, explorations, human settlements and human devastation, light (the White Sea) and stratifications. We talk about epic and comedy, life and death. And much more. About something that belongs to us, that we recognize somehow.

Per questo motivo, quando per la prima volta Teodora mi parlò del suo progetto di “una rivista di fotografia che parlasse del Mediterraneo” (disse proprio così, lo ricordo bene) a Bari, durante un fantastico workshop organizzato da Planar, fu un momento quasi catartico nella sua semplicità. Ricordo bene che in quel preciso istante pensai che l’importanza di un progetto di quel tipo stava esattamente li, nella sua disarmante, necessaria, semplicità.

Una rivista di fotografia che parlasse del Mediterraneo. Non c’era, ed era necessario ci fosse. Ora c’è. E l’avete di fronte a voi.

For this reason, when for the first time Teodora told me about her project “a photography magazine that could talk about the Mediterranean” (she said like that, I remember well) in Bari, during a fantastic workshop organized by Planar, it was a moment almost cathartic in its simplicity. I remember very well that at that precise moment I thought that the importance of that kind of project was exactly there, in its disarming and necessary simplicity. There was no such a photography magazine talking about Mediterranean. There wasn’t, and it needed to be. Now here it is. You have it just in front of you.

Po n a n t Vivien Ayroles Protagonista della serie Ponant è il Ponente Ligure, terra che ho avuto modo di visitare diverse volte. Con la fotografia ho voluto fermare e poi trasmettere le mie impressioni e sensazioni sulle peculiarità di questo angolo d’Italia.

Il paesaggio, in continua mutazione a causa del clima e della topografia, presenta una nettissima dicotomia tra litorale ed entroterra, dicotomia simbolizzata dall’autostrada che divide il territorio in due parti distinte. L’autostrada segue l’antico percorso della “Via Aurelia”, le cui rovine sono ancora oggi visibili, ma non sempre evidenti. Il litorale è molto urbanizzato: le zone residenziali e le attività terziarie sostituiscono le aeree coltivate, salvo che nelle parti storiche della “Riviera dei Fiori”. Le colline dell’entroterra sono coperte da ulivi sui pendii soleggiati e da castagni su quelli freschi e ombreggiati. I paesi di montagna si spopolano, le attività commerciali sono praticamente inesistenti. I tentativi attuali per lo sviluppo di un turismo ragionato provano in qualche modo a fermare questo cambiamento economico e sociologico.

The series Ponant is about the Western part of the Liguria region in Italy. Through several trips, I tried to convey the idea and the feeling of this very particular place in Italy.

The landscape is always changing because of the topography and different climates. Mountains plunge into the sea. The study of the landscape makes a very strong dichotomy emerge between the sea coast and the hinterland, symbolized by the highway, which cuts the space in two very distinct parts. The highway follows the ancient path of the Roman road “Via Aurelia”. Roman remains are still visible and discovered in this region, thus they are not always highlighted. The sea coast is very much urbanized, residential, and tertiary activity buildings are replacing agriculture except on historical parts of the “Riviera dei Fiori” (Flowers Riviera). Hills of the hinterland are covered by olive trees on the sunny slopes and by chestnut trees on the shady ones. Its villages are losing inhabitants and businesses. Efforts to make tourism more attractive are attempting to stop this economic shift.

S a n s a ve n i r Pierangelo Laterza Uno skyline industriale incombe su Taranto da qualsiasi angolazione visiva e mentale la si guardi.

Fumo e polvere e sostanze inquinanti si sono sparse per oltre cinquant’anni su una città condotta a forza verso una presunta “vocazione industriale” ma in realtà con ben altre e, sempre più invisibili, vocazioni al mare, alla terra, al turismo.

Acqua e petrolio, campagna e acciaio, colonne doriche e cemento, non convivono in questa città del sud Italia. E non convive più neanche l’assurda alternativa tra lavoro e salute.

Sansavenir, si legge su un muro che divide l’Ilva dalla città che le sta intorno. Queste immagini parlano di quello che le sta intorno.

An industrial skyline looms over Taranto through every possible visual and mental sight.

For over 50 years, smoke, dust and pollutants propagated in a town forced to an alleged “industrial vocation”, but actually with deeper, more and more invisible vocations for farming, tourism and the sea.

Water and oil, countryside and steel, doric columns and concrete do not coexist in this southern Italian town, as well as the absurd, and now unacceptable, alternative between work and health.

Sansavenir is a word painted on a wall dividing the Ilva steel factory and the town surrounding it.

These photographs talk about what is surrounding it.

C i ò c h e l ’ a c q u a c i h a d a t o / W h a t w a t e r g a ve u s Claudia Gori Ciò che l’acqua ci ha dato è un viaggio lungo il fiume Bisenzio che ha fatto la fortuna della valle che porta il suo nome.

La Val Bisenzio si espande dai confini dell’Emilia Romagna fino a Prato, Toscana (Italia). Quest’area era chiamata “la conca d’oro”.

Il complesso sistema idrico, costruito per sfruttare la forza motrice dell’acqua, portò alla nascita di un importante polo industriale che si sviluppava lungo tutto il corso del fiume.

Da distretto per la produzione della carta nel 1700, passando per centro di fonderia del rame, la Val Bisenzio è arrivata ad affermarsi, nella prima decade del 1800, come uno dei distretti tessili primari di tutta Italia.

L’acqua era usata per la lavorazione della lana e contribuì a fare della valle una delle aree più ricche, dando lavoro a quasi 10.000 persone.

La Val Bisenzio è stata capace di cambiare faccia nel corso del tempo, per resistere alle crisi che hanno segnato la storia italiana, ma il collasso economico del tardo ‘900 ha segnato la fine dell’età d’oro della valle. Nelle ultime tre decadi quest’area ha visto chiudere quasi tutte le grandi aziende lungo il fiume.

Il sistema idrico è utilizzato solo parzialmente e il fiume, la cui acqua rappresentava la fonte di ricchezza per tutta la popolazione della valle e dintorni, è in stato di semi abbandono. Gran parte delle fabbriche che erano una volta i polmoni che alimentavano l’area, stanno crollando e appaiono adesso scheletri che tracciano il corso del fiume.

Il tessuto sociale che, nel corso dei secoli, si era formato nella Val Bisenzio, era strettamente e quasi unicamente legato allo sviluppo del tessuto industriale. Interi villaggi-fabbrica erano stati costruiti dai proprietari dei grandi poli industriali. Nel momento in cui il lavoro è stato spazzato via dalla crisi, le persone del luogo si sono sentite private di un’identità nella quale si riconoscevano, come persone, come lavoratori e come comunità.

La Val Bisenzio appare ora sospesa tra presente e futuro. Dietro questo scenario surreale fluttua un comune senso di rassegnazione e nostalgia verso un tempo che non tornerà mai.

Questo è un viaggio lungo il fiume Bisenzio, dalla sua fonte alla sua foce, per vedere ciò che l’acqua ha dato, ciò che ha tolto, ciò che ha lasciato e ciò che ancora significa.

What water gave us is a trip along the Bisenzio river that made the fortune of the valley that has its name. The Bisenzio Valley expands from the borders of Emilia Romagna to the city of Prato, Tuscany (Italy). This area that was known as “the gold bowl”.

A complex hydro system was built to exploit the force of water and several factories were built. This led to the rising of an important industrial site that developed along all the river.

In 1700 this area was one of the main industrial districts dedicated to the production of paper, then it converted to a copper foundry, and finally became in 1800 one of the primary textile districts of Italy. The water was used for the processing of wool and made the valley one of the richest areas, giving employment to almost 10.000 people.

The Bisenzio Valley has been capable of changing its face to survive the different crises that hit the economy during the time, but the economic collapse of the late ‘900 signed the end of the golden age.

In the last three decades this area has lost almost all the biggest companies along the river.

The hydro system is now partially used and the river, that represented the source of richness for this area and the surroundings, is neglected.

Most of the buildings that were the active lungs of the district are falling down, abandoned to the course of the time, like skeletons that trace the path of the river.

The economic growing of the past ages was the core of the community and social development.

Entire factory-villages were built by the owners of the biggest companies. Once the work was wiped out the inhabitants of the valley felt deprived of that identity in which they recognized as people, workers and as community.

The Bisenzio Valley appears now suspended between the past and the future. Behind this surreal scenario a common sense of resignation is floating around: it’s nostalgia for a time that will never come back again.

This is a trip along the river from its origin to its mouth, to see what water gave, what took it away, what it left and what still means.

Due pastori maremmani abbaiano da lontano.

Siamo troppo stanchi per curarcene.

Guardiamo l’altopiano di Matera, riposandoci in silenzio, per cinque minuti, ognuno perso nei suoi pensieri. È bizzarro arrivare fin qui, dopo un viaggio di 200 km a piedi in mezzo alla natura, camminando su un’interminabile striscia d’asfalto abbandonata che sarebbe dovuta diventare una ferrovia.

La linea ferroviaria Ferrandina-Matera è stata infatti costruita e mai inaugurata. Non ci hanno messo i binari.

Rimangono due lingue di asfalto grigio lunghe chilometri, come piste di atterraggio per extraterrestri. Attraversiamo anche diversi ponti di ferro prima di arrivare fin qui e sederci.

Per carità, per noi viandanti, una bellezza.

Surreale, fra piante che sbucano dalle fessure e volpi che scappano sulla carreggiata a quindici metri di altezza.

Una bottarella di conti, però, fa tremare i polsi.

Ecco l’incompiuto italiano. L’ennesimo.

Ed ecco al fondo, come se non bastasse, la stazione di Matera.

Nuova, vuota, in abbandono.”

“Ilaria and I are sitting on the side of the road, our feet dangling in the yellow fields.

Two Maremma sheep dogs are barking far away.

We are too tired to mind them.

We look at the highland of Matera while silently refreshing, for five minutes, both absorbed in our own thoughts.

It was strange to arrive at the end of our hike, after walking for 200 km in the nature, through an asphalt trail that was supposed to be a railway.

The railway line Ferrandina-Matera was built but never unveiled.

They never built the tracks.

Now there are two long asphalt strips, that look like landing strips for aliens.

We crossed several iron bridges too to get here and take a break.

Of course, for us walkers, it is wonderful.

Surreal, among plants that come up from splits and foxes that run on the 15 metres high roadway.

Yet, counting figures and expenses sends shivers down the spine.

Here is the italian unfinished. Another one.

And here at the end is, to make matters worse, Matera station.

New, empty, abandoned.”

Le fotografie sono state scattate durante “Lucania Walk in Progress”, un progetto collettivo di mappatura a piedi del territorio e musica itinerante attraverso i sentieri della Basilicata, nel settembre 2015.

Prima di iniziare il viaggio mi ero ripromessa di non concentrarmi a priori sull’incompleto lucano. Durante gli otto giorni di cammino però, più percorrevo chilometri, più diventava difficile prescindere da questo così presente aspetto del paesaggio.

These pictures were taken during a journey by foot through the paths and roads of Basilicata (Italy), in September 2015. It has been produced as part of a collaborative project called “Lucania Walk in Progress.” Before starting my journey, I had promised myself not to stress the lucanian incompleteness, but as I was walking for eight days and almost 200 km, I could not help but turn my gaze on this aspect of the landscape I met.

I l f i u m e / T h e r i ve r Claudia Mariani Il fiume, è un diario di viaggio che raccoglie appunti, esperienze visive e pensieri, di un’esplorazione dell’intimo rapporto tra uomo e natura. È un viaggio circolare nietzschiano “in un sistema finito, con un tempo infinito, in cui ogni combinazione può ripetersi infinite volte”.

Percorrendo il fiume e rincorrendo il mistero, l’ineluttabilità e la forza di sopravvivenza della natura prevaricano sui tentativi dell’uomo di dominarla.

Davanti ad essa non resta che la sola possibilità di abbandonarsi al suo equilibrio e lasciarsi trasportare.

The river is a travel diary that gathers notes, visual experiences and thoughts, of the exploration of the intimate relation between man and nature.

It’s a nietschean circular travel, “inside a finished system with an infinite time in which each combination can be repeated infinite times”.

Along the river, chasing the mystery, nature’s inevitability and strength of survival prevaricate on man’s attempts to dominate it.

In front of it, there’s nothing left to do but to indulge in its balance and be transported.

Realizzato percorrendo il tratto del fiume Aniene che attraversa parte della zona nord di Roma.

Il fiume contiene citazioni di J. Conrad “Heart of Darkeness” e del film di F. F. Coppola “Apocalypse Now”.

Elementi che si allineo nella ricerca di territori sconosciuti sia geograficamente ma soprattutto metaforicamente, cercando di scoprire il lato oscuro della natura e della coscienza umana.

Made along the stretch of the river Aniene that crosses part of the north of Rome.

The river contains citations of J. Conrad “Heart of Darkeness” and F. F. Coppola “Apocalypse Now”, and also elements which align in the research of unknown territories geographically and above all metaphorically, trying to unveil the dark side of nature and human consciousness.

Avvertivo la necessità di rivedere e di rappresentare l’abbaglio e lo splendore di una storica nobiltà grazie a delle immagini fortemente connotate e condivise con le tonalità abbacinanti del luogo in esame.

E allora sono andato alla ricerca del Mito, di una nuova Minerva, che questa volta esce dalle acque e ci riporta splendori distanti dalle luminarie delle notti tarantate, colori e volumi semplici e razionali che finalmente guardano l’orizzonte in libertà. Il luogo del Mito, Enea e San Pietro e Minerva si confondono, si mescolano nello scenario di questo mondo alla fine del mondo.

Actually I was tired of Mediterranean light and blue skies with black at 90%.

I felt the necessity to see again and to represent the spark and the magnificence of a historical nobility thanks to images with strong connotation and shared with the glittering shades of the place itself.

And then I went to seek the Myth, to seek a new Minerva who comes outside the water to take us back to ancient splendours from the lights of “taranted nights”, rational and simple colours and volumes which can finally look towards the horizon in freedom. The place of the Myth, Aeneas and Saint Peter and Minerva confuse themselves and grow hazy in the setting of this world at the end of the world.

Quando la sua ossessione testarda è capace di deviare la logica pratica dello strumento che usa, verso la creazione di scenari inconsueti, spiazzanti e necessari.

Le simmetrie e i parallelismi tranquillizzano l’osservatore insicuro, gli permettono di muoversi e costruire geografie proprie, nella frammentarietà caotica del guardare fuori da se stesso, a volte lo commuovono o lo riempiono di rabbia.

The strength of a photographic story lays on the photographer’s outof-control vulnerability, when he or she insists on making square the circle of his gaze, which often becomes a revealing of vital uncertainties, going beyond his or her real intentions.

When his stubborn obsession is able to deflect the practical logic of an implemented instrument, towards the creation of unusual scenarios, unsettling and necessary.

Symmetries and parallelism reassure insecure observer, allow him to move and to build its own geographies, in the chaotic fragmentation of looking outside himself, sometimes they move him, or they fill him with rage.

Le mappe sono i segni e le scritture di un passaggio nei luoghi e nelle geografie del pianeta e forse un surrogato dell’esperienza personale con il resto del mondo.

Maps are signs and writings of a passage in the places and geographies of the planet and perhaps a surrogate of personal experience towards the rest of the world.

Mappe come lo scacchiere di un gioco, i cui partecipanti vivono nella piacevole illusione di riscrivere regole quasi impossibili da cambiare.

I fotografi ripetono all’infinito il rito del viaggiare e dell’esplorazione, nella piacevole illusione del primo sguardo sulla realtà, immaginandosi primitivi o alieni piombati da un altro pianeta, spinti forse da un desiderio inconscio e molto umano di sfuggire dalla pesantezza della storia ereditata.

Maps as chessboard of a game where participants live in the pleasant illusion of rewriting rules almost impossible to change.

Photographers repeat endlessly the ritual of travel and exploration, in the pleasant illusion of the first glance on reality, envisaging primitive creatures or aliens coming from another planet, maybe driven by an unconscious and strongly human desire of escaping from the heaviness of their inherited history.
