COURSE LAYOUT & PIN PLACEMENT Hole 1 - Par 4

Hole 6 - Par 4

This opening hole sets the stage for Marbella’s challenging layout. With fairway running left to right it’s the best bet to hit a draw to get to the best look on the green. The hazard, which runs along the right, opens up 185 yards from the green, but hidden from view is a hill, which borders the OB markers – shots in to this long grass are rarely recovered. Approach shots to the green may require more club due to the ocean breeze from the West with shots to the left often kicking onto the green.

Hit a draw down the right side of the fairway and you will often get to the lower level. The grass bunker to the left sits 130 yards out and swallows lots of tee shots. With bunkers left and right and a nasty one in front – shoot for the flag, but don’t be long, the back of the green directs the balls in to the rough, often with a downhill stance.

Hole 2 - Par 4 This long par 4 is number 1 handicap for a reason – the fairway is guarded by hazards to the left and OB to the right. The ideal tee shot flies just over the left edge of the bunker, which sits 235 from the center of the green. Balls move right to left in this fairway and you can easily find yourself in jail along the left edge. A long second shot into the wind is required to reach this green, which also moves left to right.

Hole 3 - Par 4 The best approach to this uphill blind hole is along the left edge of the fairway. A long iron or fairway wood can still put you within easy reach of this tricky and well bunkered green. Play your approach shots wisely as the middle right drains in to a waste area that keeps par more than a putt away.

Hole 4 - Par 3 Watch the flag to get an idea of what’s happening at the green. Bunkers left and behind and water to the right will give the golfer weak knees.

Hole 5 - Par 5 At last a chance to get back some strokes. Long hitters aim left towards the big Eucalyptus over the center bunker, safe is over the right edge. The edge of this long sausage shaped bunker left sits 245 from the center of the green. You can get home in 2 with a fairway wood, but bunkers left and right will make you pay if you are the least bit off. The two tiered green is quick coming back to front; it is best to stay below the hole.

Hole 7 - Par 3 A large front bunker guards this green. More opportunities lie ahead if you clear the bunker and get too close to center – as your ball drains into the “Valley of 3-putts”. With the wind at your back a club less might be the right choice. The left back of the green is 5 yards closer than the right, so don’t over club when hitting left.

Hole 8 - Par 4 A tough dogleg right. If you want to reach the green in 2 you must carry the bunker, which sits 220 from the green. If you slice one here, hit a provisional as the residents’ yards catch many an errant shot. This long narrow green accepts balls better from the left front, a swale collects balls middle right and then deposits them in the rough.

Hole 9 - Par 4 Downhill and slightly left it is best to aim just to the right of the tree line with a draw. Long hitters can get down the hill but often have a downhill lie. The best approach comes just before the downhill slope on the left as the bunkers to the right and water to the left provide for a well protected green.

Hole 10 - Par 4 The best approach to this uphill blind hole is along the left edge of the fairway. A long iron or fairway wood can still put you within easy reach of this tricky and well bunkered green. Play your approach shots wisely as the middle right drains in to a waste area that keeps par more than a putt away.

COURSE LAYOUT & PIN PLACEMENT (CONTINUED) Hole 11 - Par 3

Hole 15 - Par 4

Into the wind club selection is important. It is best to hit the middle right as the left side may drain to the lake. You will not be happy if you’re short and in front of the bunker. Other than these small challenges, fire away at the easiest hole on the course.

A magnificent view of the fairway and the hills of Rancho Mission Viejo is disturbed only by the water hazard that sits 60 yards from the center of the green. Hit a draw down the right or a fade down the left and you can have a nice approach shot to the green. Don’t be short on your approach as the slope will carry the ball in to the hazard and you will need to reload from the drop area. The grass waste bunker to the right is to be avoided as balls run quickly right to left towards the hazard.

Hole 12 - Par 4 This par 4 with the wind at your back brings out the animal in gophers, so Weiskopf had added 9 bunkers and OB both left and right. Long hitters may want to let the green clear first. Best approach to the green is from the right as 5 of the bunkers carefully guard the green. Stay away from the left front of the green as the balls collect and drain to the rough.

Hole 13 - Par 4 A nice driving hole guarded by OB markers left and right. Get to the baby Eucalyptus on the right and you are 110 from home. You may not feel the wind in the fairway, but it is up there, so pay attention. Balls will run off the back of this two tiered green, possibly in to white disks (OB), which plentifully mark Marbella’s 18 holes.

Hole 14 - Par 5 Whatever you’ve got, this hole will need. Few players reach this long 5 par in 2. A giant bunker in the shape of a swallow sits on the slope and collects many second shots. Unless you have a cannon, stay left. When firing at the flag it is best to stay right and use an additional club up the hill towards this tricky green. Shots to the left drain to a waste area that put you 20 yards away. The two Eucalyptus trees behind the green mark the center of the green and are a good target from the long upper fairway.

full club privileges

Hole 16 - Par 3 This long par 3 into the wind is best played to the right edge of the green. The hill to the right can be forgiving and may surprise you with a bounce onto the putting surface. Go left of the bunkers and you are in jail. Two tiers on this green make putting from top to bottom quite challenging, with balls often running off the green.

Hole 17 - Par 4 Aim your tee shot towards the tower that is partially obscured in the distance. OB sits to the right of the cart path and red stakes are left of the bunkers. If you can hit a rope over the right edge of the front bunker the green opens up nicely. The two tiered green gives yet another opportunity for shot making. If the flag is left, hit the middle and it will drain down towards the pin.

Hole 18 - Par 4 Enjoy the spectacular view of Dana Point Harbor from the upper tee box and then fire away at this lovely finishing hole. The bunker at the left sits 155 from the center and guards some shots from going OB. When hitting in to the green don’t over club this downhill shot as OB is marked by the cart path. If the flag is in the bowl to the left aim left, short of the middle and let it drain towards the pin.
