THE MARBURN DIFFERENCE from our Board Chair Welcome to Marburn’s 2022-2023 Impact Report. In my third year serving as Marburn’s Board Chair, I am truly honored and humbled to be leading this incredible Board made up of remarkable leaders from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Their commitment to ensuring the best educational opportunities for our students inspires me daily. Every year, the composition of the Board changes as new members are added and others complete their terms. I would like to acknowledge those who have transitioned off of the Board and recognize them for their many years of service – Tom White (six years), Lisa Edwards (three years), and Carolyn White (three years). We thank all of them for their years of service and devotion to our mission. The culture of the Board remains strong; new members pick up the mantle laid before by their predecessors. Already highly engaged, I am excited about the new energy, ideas, and focus our new members are bringing. With that, I’m delighted to introduce to the community our newest board members.

• Tony Brigano, Senior Director of State Government Relations, Hicks Partners • Ian Kieninger, CEO and Co-Founder of AVANT, a global technology firm; Ian’s daughter attends Marburn Academy in the Middle Division • Andrew Meslow, former CEO of L Brands and Bath & Body Works, Inc. • Nikki Mesnard, owner and attorney, Mesnard Law Office; Nikki’s son is receiving tutoring at Marburn Academy • Terry Ziegler, Director of Product Strategy, TELUS Consumer Goods

scanning the QR code below, but one that sticks out most to me as I write this letter is, “Here, we’re in it together.” When my son, Will, attended Marburn, I knew this to be true. I watched as the school partnered with my wife, Pam, and me to ensure our son saw success. For the first time in a long while, we found a community that understood our journey. When I think about it in a broader sense, I think about all the people who make Marburn such a transformational place. From the teachers to the school psychologists, the speech-language pathologists to the scholarship liaisons, and any individual staff member to the board members I mentioned above, Marburn Academy is an excellent school due to each remarkable person within it. Marburn is a special community; close-knit, connected, and caring, where people find acceptance and belonging. I’m so proud to be a small part of it. And I am thankful that many others have chosen to join the community through their generosity and kindness. The tireless work of fulfilling Marburn’s mission takes many hands. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your support and partnership.

DIFFERENCE

These individuals bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise. A wisdom that comes from deep and varied experiences in multiple fields and arenas. I am thrilled to learn from each of them as they steward Marburn Academy into a bright future as the leader in education for students who learn differently.

The Marburn Difference In the past year, we’ve spent a great deal of time and energy on Marburn’s key differentiators, establishing what makes up the Marburn Difference, our special sauce, if you will. All components of the Marburn Difference can be found when

LOWER DIVISION

MARBURN’S INTENTIONAL CLASSROOMS: STEMscopes and Math Intervention Marburn Academy has set a new standard for personalized education through its strategic integration of STEMscopes into science programming and the innovative use of Task Analysis for math intervention. By seamlessly combining these approaches, Marburn Academy is not only providing an enriching educational experience but also exemplifying a commitment to meeting the diverse learning needs of its student body beginning in its youngest grades.

Marburn’s math intervention structure is rooted in Task Analysis, a specialized approach developed in collaboration with Dr. Bradley Witzel from Western Carolina University. This approach involves a meticulous breakdown of mathematical concepts into smaller skills, steps, and tasks. By leveraging the KeyMath computation subtests and grade-level content data, Marburn Academy identifies specific areas of need and tailors interventions to address individual learning gaps.

Science Curriculum

Within the Panther Block class, two teachers lead small groups, with one focusing on on-grade-level content and the other on off-grade-level content. Simultaneously, a group of students engages in independent practice from the previous day’s lessons. This dynamic model not only addresses below-gradelevel skills but also connects them to on-grade-level learning, providing a holistic and integrated math education.

STEMscopes is not just a supplement to Marburn Academy’s science curriculum; it serves as a transformative force integrated across all divisions of the school. The decision to adopt STEMscopes emerged from a rigorous curriculum review process initiated in 2021. Marburn’s science department engaged in an exhaustive evaluation of evidence-based curricula, collaborated with publishers, and conducted hands-on trials to ensure the chosen curriculum would work for the program. The phenomena-based learning approach of STEMscopes allows students to explore the “whys” and “hows” of scientific phenomena, bridging theoretical knowledge with real-world applications. This integration allows students to connect prior knowledge and deploys ample amounts of hands-on activities and labs. The school also liked that it was built upon the 5E Model: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.

Math Intervention

In response to the unique learning needs of its students, Marburn Academy introduced a math Panther Block class in both the Lower Division and Middle Division during the 202223 academic year. Departing from conventional Lower Division Panther Block classes, this math-focused intervention offers targeted support to students requiring math intervention rather than the traditional langauge-based intervention of the OrtonGillingham (OG) approach.

Eureka Math Squared

During the 2022-2023 school year, the Lower Division piloted Eureka Math Squared alongside its longstanding use of Eureka Math, in its two on-grade-level 5th grade math classes. Eureka Math Squared is specifically designed for improved readability, offering crucial support for students with language-based learning differences, including dyslexia. The success of the pilot has led Marburn Academy to adopt Eureka Math Squared for the entire lower division in the 2023-24 academic year, with an additional pilot in 6th grade. Marburn Academy’s commitment to providing a hands-on science education and targeted math intervention is evident in its strategic implementation of STEMscopes in science programming and the innovative methods for math intervention. By adopting methodologies that cater to the diverse learning needs of its students and creating strategically intentional classrooms, Marburn stands as a trailblazer in inclusive education, empowering students to excel in the dynamic worlds of science and mathematics. As Marburn Academy continues to innovate its curriculum and interventions, it remains dedicated to ensuring that every student has access to an education that works for them.

IN IT TOGETHER:

Impact Through Giveback Marburn Academy strives to produce graduates who are engaged, compassionate, and active members of their community. As part of this commitment, Middle Division brought back the annual GiveBack Day tradition. Students were assigned to different community organization sites throughout the Greater Columbus area and served the community by helping out with projects. At the Broad Street Food Pantry, students “shopped” for clients, assembling boxes of food items from lists that patrons filled out upon arrival. They helped the staff in loading the food boxes into vehicles and also helped unload donations as they were being dropped off. Additionally, some students also cleaned up the on premises playground. Students at The Avalon of New Albany assisted living facility spent the day socializing with residents. They played games, from cards to shuffle board, made crafts, and listened to the residents’ stories. It was an invaluable opportunity to connect with a different generation.

Students ran the city at LifeTown Columbus, a model village designed to build transition skills needed to be active and independent community members. Here, students were assigned jobs at the various businesses in town. Participants learned how to be cashiers, movie ticket takers, and hair stylists, all while serving members of the community transition towards independence. Marburn was at several other organizations throughout the day as well. Assisting some of the areas most vulnerable, students stationed at The Open Shelter served meals to those experiencing homelessness. At the Columbus Diaper Bank, students packed diapers for those in need. And some students enjoyed the outdoors while doing landscape clean up and planting for Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks at Big Walnut Creek. Driving positive change in the community is part of Marburn’s mission. Immersing students in opportunities to serve teaches valuable lessons about what it means to live meaningfully in a community. Thank you to the community partners who made the day a success.

HIGH SCHOOL

BUILDING STUDENTS UP:

Marburn Students R.I.S.E. to New Heights Many schools have post-graduation preparedness programs and curriculum. However, Marburn’s intentional focus on developing strategies and tools specific to the unique challenges and strengths of students who learn differently finds expression in its RISE Program. RISE is a sequence of courses focused on:

• Reviewing and improving skills, • Implementing strategies for success, • Strategizing for future; college and career, and • Executing the plan for student goals. The RISE curriculum is delivered through the Advisory Program. Students are assigned an advisor who works individually with them to establish goals, discuss challenges, make improvement plans, and reflect on progress. During Advisory Period, advisors use the RISE curriculum to provide direct instruction to their advisees. This instruction is supported through dedicated study periods where students are given the opportunity to work on content while teachers are available for questions or clarification. At Marburn, the goal is for graduates to be engaged, resilient, compassionate, self-advocates who are empowered to lead the life they want. The RISE curriculum is intentionally designed to provide students with the skills and confidence to meet this standard. Instruction is scaffolded at each grade level so that knowledge and understanding builds upon the previous year’s. The focus for freshmen year is to prepare students for the rest of high school by building skills important to being academically successful. These include organization, prioritization, goal setting, study skills, research, and more. Especially crucial is the focus on building an organization system. As a school that caters to students with executive functioning needs, establishing 6

systems and habits to stay organized is vitally important for success in school and beyond. There are also built-in times for advisors to check-in on students to ensure accountability and that students are adhering to the organization system. During sophomore year, students build upon the previous year in important areas such as public speaking and more independence with organizing their work and studies. However, students also begin exploring their own learning styles. Students learn about the brain and how it relates to understanding and retaining information. As students with learning differences, this exploration helps them further understand their challenges so they can recognize and overcome them. As juniors, students begin a deep dive into imagining and preparing a life after high school. Students start exploring colleges and the application process through college fairs, essay practice, and PSAT and ACT preparation. Students also learn about disability services offered in colleges and emphasis is placed on self-advocating for needs. Job and financial literacy skills are also a focus during this year. Juniors participate in mock job interviews to practice their skills and obtain valuable feedback. Senior year is all about preparing for post-high school success by building on and expanding the skill sets honed the previous three years. Importance is put on students becoming independent community contributors through final college application steps, expanded financial literacy, and post graduation goal setting. It all culminates in graduation where students practice their acquired public speaking skills by writing and delivering their own speeches at the commencement ceremony.

WHY WE GIVE The Crawley Family Doreen DeLaney Crawley joined Grange Insurance in 2010 and is currently the EVP, Chief Operations Officer. One of her many duties is overseeing the Grange Foundation. Through this work, she learned about the existing relationship with Marburn. Beginning in 2014, Grange has supported Marburn via gift-inkind printing of marketing and admission materials for the school. More recently, Grange joined the many Annual Gala supporters as a major sponsor of Marburn’s important event. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Doreen and her husband Brian began to notice their son, Hunter, was having some challenges. Hunter had already been diagnosed with ADHD, but this was different - now he was struggling with reading. Hunter is a bright kid, so Doreen knew something more was occurring and was determined to find a solution. While researching schools and programs for students with reading challenges, she found Marburn. Doreen had heard about Marburn from several friends and colleagues before noticing Hunter’s learning difference but had not yet made the connection. When reading about whom Marburn serves and what the school has to offer, she knew, “This is what we are seeing with Hunter, and I was sold immediately.” Doreen quickly reached out and connected with Director of Admission Shetal Parikh, who invited the family to tour the school and learn about applying. It was June, and the start of school was quickly approaching, but Doreen and Brian were committed to getting Hunter into the right situation. They quickly went to work getting all the materials and testing necessary to apply and credit Shetal with guiding them through the process and having a clear plan to ensure there was an admission decision before the start of school. Hunter was accepted the week before school started; he attended New Student Orientation that Friday and started second grade at Marburn the following Tuesday.

“We are blessed we can send Hunter to Marburn. I know there are parents out there who need a school like this for their kids but don’t have the ability to finance a private school education. I want to shine my light for others so they can experience what we have experienced.”

If she had the opportunity, Doreen would do it all over again. “Marburn is unlocking his potential,” she says. “Before, he was drowning. Now, I see a change in Hunter. Even on the frustrating days, I can see him using the skills and tools he is learning.” Doreen credits the faculty and their willingness to communicate with parents and be partners in shaping Hunter’s educational journey. “Marburn is our north star,” she says, “I sleep well knowing he’s there.” Doreen recognizes how fortunate she and her family are for this opportunity and acknowledges the circumstances for other families may be different. In addition to giving personally to the school, Doreen also advocates for Grange to continue to support Marburn and make this dream a reality for others.
