GRATITUDE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR
ABOUT MARBURN
Founded in 1981, Marburn Academy is an independent day school devoted to serving the educational needs of bright students who learn differently due to dyslexia, executive function difficulties, and attention issues. Marburn is accredited by the Independent School Association of the Central States (ISACS) and is one of only 19 schools globally to have its language instruction program accredited by the Orton-Gillingham Academy (OGA).
MARBURN MISSION
At Marburn Academy, we celebrate students who learn differently, empowering them to awaken their potential, to achieve success in school and life, and to drive positive change in our communities.
MARBURN VISION
To be the Midwest’s go-to provider of the rare, life-changing education for students who learn differently.
CORE VALUES
Community I Communication I Innovation
Sustainability I Growth EDUCATIONAL AFFILIATIONS
As we embark on the 2024-2025 academic year, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all members of our Marburn community—students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, donors, partners, and friends. Your unwavering support and dedication have been instrumental in our success. It has been an incredible honor to serve as the Chair of the Board of Trustees for the past three years and, as my tenure comes to a close, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have been a part of this extraordinary community in this way.
Marburn Academy has always held a special place in my heart, not just as a Board Chair but as a parent who has seen firsthand the profound impact that a Marburn education can have on a child’s life. The transformation I witnessed in my son, Will, is something I will always treasure, and I know that countless other families are feeling this same impact.
Every year, the composition of the Board changes as new members are added and others complete their terms. I would like to take a moment to acknowledge those who have transitioned off of the Board and recognize their many years of service – Jessica Ditullio (six years), Kelly Gratz (three years), Karen Heiser (six years), and Jim Perry (seven years). Thank you!
It is with great pride and confidence that I pass the torch to our new Board Chair, Jane Coleman-Porter. Like me, Jane is an alumni parent who deeply understands the unique and life-changing experience that Marburn provides. Her profound understanding and commitment to our mission make her the ideal person to guide us into this next chapter.
In addition to Jane’s leadership, we are thrilled to welcome several new members to our Board of Trustees. I am delighted to introduce the community to our newest board members:
• Kristia Adrian, Executive Director, 529 Specialist, J.P. Morgan Asset Management
• Tony Carstens, Owner, Fischer-Backus; alumni parent
• Dr. Rochelle Dunn, Owner, Rochelle Dunn Counseling
• Kyle Kane, Chief People Officer, Northwest Bank
• Jason Pheister, North Region Vice President, Content and News, Charter Communications; Jason’s daughter currently attends Marburn Academy
• Dr. Bren Sutter, Assistant Dean for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Capital University Law School
EXPANDING PARENT PARTNERSHIPS
Marburn hosts an Orton-Gillingham (OG) certification training for educators in central Ohio each summer. Hosted by Orton-Gillingham Academy Accredited Fellow and Marburn staff member Lisa Neuhoff, the intensive program provides a pathway to OG certification, as well as sharpens skills, and teaches new tactics for reading instruction.
However, among the cohort this year were two outliers. Beth Ryan, mother of Ramsey, and Pam Bender, mother of Reid—both students in the Lower Division—recently completed the 35-hour course alongside teachers and educators. Beth and Pam spoke with Marburn about their experience.
Each of these individuals brings a wealth of experience, expertise, and a shared commitment to the success and growth of Marburn Academy. I am confident that, under Jane’s leadership and with the support of our dedicated board, Marburn will continue to thrive and make a lasting impact on the lives of our students and their families.
As I step down, I do so with immense pride in all that we have accomplished together and with great excitement for
Why did you want to take the OG training course? What have you learned?
Beth - We chose Marburn as a day school because everyone at Marburn speaks the same OG language. In order to support Ramsey at home, I wanted to learn the language, too. Not only that, I see myself applying what I’ve learned to help my eighth grader, who doesn’t attend Marburn, with spelling, and I think this deeper understanding will help me better articulate to family and friends what makes Marburn different.
Pam - I am a licensed Speech Language Pathologist. I wanted to better support both my clients and Reid at home. I considered other programs, but I liked that Marburn’s program was in-person and taught by a practitioner who also works with my son’s teachers.
As a whole, I feel that through this new understanding, the partnership with the school will be very positive.
the bright future that lies ahead under this new leadership. Marburn Academy is a special place, and I am confident that it will continue to be a beacon of hope, opportunity, and transformation for many years to come.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for your unwavering support. Go Panthers!
Tim Martin Chair, Board of Trustees
Speaking of practitioners, talk to us about Lisa (Neuhoff), your trainer.
Beth - She’s so knowledgable! She has given many examples of approaches to use with kids, how to use individual approaches, and how to adjust to different children. She was always available and willing to support the cohort.
- Lisa provided practical ideas on applying the knowledge and modeled the skills rather than just telling us. I would hope more people would take the course to help their children.
Beth - I agree! I’m grateful that Marburn offers this training. Having a child with a learning difference is isolating, and I am grateful that Marburn offers an opportunity to glimpse into our children’s minds and brains so we can better support them.
BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH COMMUNITY HEROES LOWER DIVISION
A fire engine pulling up in front of an establishment can spark anxiety, anticipation, and a little trepidation. However, when the Plain Township Fire Department arrived at Marburn Academy last November, it was all excitement as firefighters came to share about their truck and equipment with the Lower Division. Students watched in awe as they learned what a firefighter wears when fighting fires and how the different tools on the truck work to keep citizens safe. Of particular interest was a demonstration of the hydraulic rescue tool, better known as the Jaws of Life. The first responders from the local station answered student questions about the equipment, how it all works, and if they could try it out (that answer was “no”). They also shared tips on fire safety, preventing fires, and staying safe in a fire.
The two groups connected again in December when students walked across the street to visit the brigade at the fire station. During the visit, students toured the facility, seeing where the trucks are housed, where equipment is stored, and where the company sleeps and eats while waiting to serve the community. In the garage, students crawled through the ladder truck and even witnessed the medical truck leave the bay on a call. As a thank you for being exceptional community partners, students brought cookies for the squad to enjoy.
Local first responders and Marburn students continued to foster relationships throughout the year. In January, students participated in DARE, a community education program that teaches how to make sound, safe decisions and builds partnerships and trust with local first responders. DARE Officer Robert Warner of the New Albany Police Department spent several weeks visiting classrooms and discussing how to stay drug-free, resist peer pressure and dares, use medication safely, and be safe around strangers. Students learned to identify potentially dangerous situations and skills to say no and stay safe in those situations, as well as when to seek help from caregivers or first responders. Officer Warner stressed that keeping themselves and others safe
was essential to being a good citizen and community member.
Creating lasting external partnerships and relationships is crucial in driving positive community change. Fulfilling a key tenant of Marburn’s mission, students are engaging with the community in ways that build curiosity, skills, and trust.
CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: MIDDLE DIVISION VISITS D.C.
The Middle Division trip to Washington, D.C., was an unforgettable journey of learning and exploration. The students had the unique opportunity to visit some of the nation’s most iconic landmarks and monuments, each offering a rich tapestry of history and culture.
Among the monuments, paying homage to citizens who created and preserved the nation’s ideals, was the Jefferson Memorial, where students learned about the establishment of American democracy and its hope for representation by all. At the Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorials, students admired those whose bravery ensured and codified those ideals for all citizens.
One of the many museums students visited was the National Air and Space Museum where they explored the fascinating evolution of aviation. From the Wright brothers’ first flight to the moon landing, the exhibits ignited imaginations and underscored the spirit of innovation, exploration, and perseverance.
Perhaps the most memorable moment came at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. Four students were selected through an essay contest to lay a wreath at the memorial. Flanked by Tomb guards and surrounded by families, veterans, and their classmates, the students descended the steps from the Memorial Auditorium toward the Tomb and assisted in placing the wreath in front of the monument. The crowd stood solemnly, reflecting on the sacrifice of those who have and continue to serve, as the sentinels stationed at the Tomb performed a poignant ceremony
honoring the unnamed soldiers laid to rest there.
Punctuated by a visit to the Capital and a stop by the White House, the students witnessed firsthand the seats of the American government. Throughout the trip, all the participants gained a better understanding of the democratic process and the importance of civic engagement. Through this program, the group engaged with themes of community, developing a deeper understanding of what it means to be an active citizen.
HIGH SCHOOL
BEING HENRY: A RELATABLE STORY
It can be inspiring for students to meet and interact with successful people who overcome daily the same academic challenges they face. This past November, select Marburn high schoolers were fortunate to meet one such individual.
The students attended an event with actor Henry Winkler during a stop on his book tour in Columbus. Widely known for his portrayal of Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli in the series “Happy Days,” Winkler has appeared in several TV shows and movies over the past five decades, including “The Waterboy,” “Arrested Development,” and “Barry.” Though he struggled in school, Winkler was not diagnosed with dyslexia until he was 31 years old. He vividly recalls wanting to do better in school and studying for hours but struggling when it
came time to take tests. In acting, he found an outlet. Though he still faced adversity, Winkler channeled his frustrations, fears, and anxiety into perseverance, bravery, and hope, once saying, “Can you imagine if I had given into my fear?”
Students were a part of the audience for a conversation hosted by Thurber House between Winkler and Pulitzer Prize-Winning Journalist Connie Schultz, discussing his emotional memoir, “Being Henry.” Through the generosity of Marburn Board of Trustees member Rachel Althof and the Thurber House, students met Winkler personally after the event. He greeted the group, posed for pictures, answered questions, and discussed his struggles with dyslexia. Winkler gave the students some advice
as they parted: “Don’t let others tell you what you can and can’t do. Everyone is powerful. I didn’t think I could be an actor. I didn’t think I could write children’s books. Then I believed, jumped, and can do anything.”
As the saying goes, you can’t be what you can’t see. Exposing students to successful people in the community outside of school is essential in the maturation of graduates as they move into the world. Marburn is privileged to provide tailored experiences to the student body through community connections and partnerships.

WHY WE GIVE THE KNEUERTZ FAMILY
Eight years ago, Jenni and Peter Kneuertz had no idea that finding Marburn Academy would forever change their lives. At the time, their daughter Amelie was starting her education in New York City, where the family lived during Peter’s surgical fellowship. Amelie was just beginning first grade in Manhattan’s Upper East Side when she was first diagnosed with her learning differences.
Shortly after, the Kneuertz family discovered they would be moving to the Columbus, Ohio area, where Dr. Kneuertz would begin a career as a thoracic surgeon at The Ohio State University. Knowing Amelie would need an academic setting that supported her learning needs, Jenni started searching for the perfect school and community. After several unsuccessful attempts with local school districts, Jenni started making phone calls, searching online, and asking around. Her research led her to Marburn Academy and its Director of Admissions, Celeste Stevenson.
Jenni had been searching for the perfect school that could cater to her daughter’s learning difference and provide the specialized attention and support she required. When they discovered Marburn, Jenni was intrigued but filled with questions
and concerns. Fortunately, Celeste was there to guide the Kneuertz family through every step of the process. In a series of questions and thoughtful conversations over the phone, Celeste patiently addressed Jenni’s queries, reassuring her that Marburn was indeed the ideal environment for Amelie to thrive. With that expertise and empathy, Jenni came to comprehensively understand Marburn’s specialized curriculum, individualized teaching methods, and vibrant community. Eager to experience Marburn firsthand, Jenni and Amelie made the trip from New York to Columbus, where the Marburn team warmly welcomed them. The visit was a resounding success, and Amelie was accepted into the school that very week, just in time for her to start the 201617 school year; also Marburn’s first year in the brand-new, state-of-the-art facility in New Albany. Throughout this whirlwind, Jenni was deeply grateful for the time, patience, and genuine care that Celeste and the entire Marburn community had shown her and Amelie, even amidst the busy transition into their new building. Jenni knew that Amelie had found her educational home, and she felt reassured her daughter would have a transformative and safe learning experience.
In 2024, Amelie is thriving as a sophomore; her confidence is soaring, and she is eager to prepare for her future college career and beyond. According to Jenni, Marburn’s clear mission and vision provided the answers to support Amelie and her family’s path to success in Columbus. Jenni notes that watching Amelie seamlessly complete all three school levels without struggles or anxiety proves Marburn’s holistic understanding of students and its ability to prepare them for the next chapter of their lives.
While it may be a cliché, the Kneuertz family wholeheartedly affirms that Marburn was genuinely life-changing. They cannot imagine life without Marburn and are proud to be Panthers! Supporting Marburn’s Mission through giving is how the Kneuertz Family helps others have the same positive outcome they experienced, and they hope to encourage other Panthers to do the same.
