Lürssen launches project 1601

In May Lürssen launched project 1601 in the traditional fashion: down the slipway! Espen Oeino has given the 90m superyacht a striking design with extraordinary features dominated by planar surfaces, straight lines and angular corners. The exterior styling suggests a geometrical precision that permeates every facet of the yacht. The interior is designed by Dölker+Voges and echoes the same design themes as her exterior. Cornelsen & Partner is acting as Project Manager in the owner’s team throughout the construction process. After the launching, project 1601 went into Lürssen’s floating dock and spectators may have to wait until next year for another appearance. Photo courtesy of Klaus Jordan/Lürssen.

Vripack goes back to nature with Futura

When Dutch design studio Vripack set about designing Futura – its 66m fossil-free yacht concept – the focus was to capture wildlife’s innate ability to freely propel through air and water. Her flowing, curvaceous lines denote an elegant femininity that draws from a collection of shapes found in nature. With sustainability at the fore, Futura is slender, efficient and a third of the height of a comparable 66m yacht. Capable of holding 100,000l of fuel, Futura is an electric/diesel hybrid with a difference. Designed to run solely on ‘blue diesel’ if desired – a type of Finnish biofuel made from waste food – it also possesses revolutionary bio-based batteries made from salt, sand, water and plants. Charged by an enormous kite on an electric winch, the battery bank itself is 100% biodegradable.

Heesen keeps Project Castor on schedule during COVID-19 pandemic

YN 19055 Project Castor was launched at the Heesen facility in Oss on schedule for its delivery in August. Thanks to the drastic measures adopted early on, Heesen was able to carry on work during the COVID-19 crisis with as little disruption as possible. By halving the number of employees working in the shipyard at any one time by working in two shifts, the company did not lose productivity, and increased flexibility. At 760GT, Project Castor is the most voluminous 55m currently offered by a Northern European shipyard. Powered by two MTU 8V 4000 M63 diesel main engines, she will reach a top speed of 15.5 knots and will boast a range of 4,500nm at a cruising speed of 13 knots. YN 19055 will be delivered to her owners in August 2020 after rigorous sea trials in the North Sea.
