a modest proposal The town planning and architecture configured by modernity and post-modernity still fail to overcome the crisis of the end of the century. Migratory pressures, new issues of sustainability and new ideas of citizenship described in completely new terms both the life in the house and the living between builidngs. The space of the city, its being a house without a roof, has lost much of the social features that had taken in the early XX century, becoming the perfect place for shopping and consume. The current city is the place of fulfillment of basic needs, to dress, to sleep, to work, and the relationship of individuals with quantitative criteria about spending, gain and investment has increasingly divorced citizens towards the dreams, the ambitions and their realization. The current city is unhappy, but it is the only place where even our ideals can be realized and compared. The form is the way in which the architect communicates, and through which imposes its own meanings to the land and to nature. But the form is nothing without the dreams. As Laszlo Moholy Nagy stated: “We need brilliant utopians, some new Jules Verne; this time not to sketch the broad outlines of an easily imaginable technical utopia, but to foreshadow the existence of the manof the future, who, in the instinctually elementary, as well as inthe complicated relationships of life, will work in harmony with the basic laws of his being”. My work on industrial civilization, whether if applied to active or closed factories, ports, and even back in time, until the beginning of modern civilization, in the Italian Middle Ages, made in me the idea of a brand new “civitas” which is able to put before the private successful themes, individualism on, the logic of reappropriation of space, the construction of a shared history which, through the logic of social freedom, the desing for a new civilization, finally brave and free.

Industryscape Type: Industrial Reuse Client: University of Roma “Sapienza“ Keywords: Memory, Technics, Factories, Community
The end of industrial civilization has brought large parts of industry to be decommissioned and abandoned. Many of them now have created the phenomenon of shrinking cities, derelict and abandoned cities, where buildings are of poor quality and not very attractive to new segments of the population. The project involved a series of initiatives at the regional and local level, to reconnect the city to its countryside and the sea. In this way the factory become the new engine of development that, starting from the industrial landscape, gives new meaning to the city, incorporating sculptures, namely the disused machinery, and freeing land for a new building, sustainable and symbolically linked to the previous cities. The soil design is dictated by the existing tracks, railways, roads, conveyor belts become signs of an urban palimpsest on which the new town is divided and is reborn.

OVER THE WALLS
Plan of restoration of Mura of San Gimignano
International Contest || San Gimignano || Italy 12
OVER THE WALL Type: Urban Rehabilitation Client: City of San Gimignano Keywords: Landscape, Market, Tuscany, Regeneration
The Tuscan landscape is the result of the sum of the medieval urbanization of small villages and a nature tamed by man and transformed into a lush and fertile countryside. The transition between these two elements is not, however, always been happy, like in San Gimignano, where the undoubted beauty of the city, the walls, the towers, turns into an urban dimension free, or nearly so, of visual relationships with the nearby countryside. Also, the defensive nature of the city turns in a wall steep and inaccessible. In this regard it is designed a square - viewpoint, the head of which will be the new market, which allows, at the top, a metaphysical relationship with the landscape, on the one hand the great portal made of rusty steel frames a visual landscape window, on the other side the excavated and eroded cube returns, to the landscape, a further urban dimension, as an alley that opens onto nature. On the lower level, the square is transformed into theater, dominated by cuts of light coming from the stairs and the upper large oculus. The auditorium, hiding the car parks, becomes buttress and support of the entire visual system. 13

ORTOFFICINA
Plan of restoration of former factory SNIA Viscosa
International Contest || Rome || Italy 18
ORTOFFICINA Type: Urban Regeneration Client: Topscape/Paysage Keywords: Landscape, Market, Industrial Heritage, Urban Farming.
Inside the periurban belt of Rome it is now a network of closed factories represent one of the most interesting systems to understand Rome beyond its ancient history. The SNIA Park was destined to become a mall in the 80’s, but during the excavation of a portion of the parking, the aquifer has surfaced, creating a lake in the north of the area. Since then, the area was abandoned until a few years ago when a group of citizens has created a small park. To date, however, the whole area of industrial archeology is still in ruins. The project involves the construction of a large urban farm, on the model of Latin American Organoponicos, in the central part of the factory, with the creation of a new local market, and the transformation of the sheds in nature ruins that surround the agricultural park. Part of the old shopping center, close to the lake, is turned into belvedere, tying the memory of the place to the remaining buildings. Finally, a new building becomes the museum - documentation center of the park and the history of the neighborhood. 19

FONDACO OF ADRIATICS
Plan of reuse of Commercial Port of Pesaro International Contest || Pesaro || Italy

FONDACO OF ADRIATICS Type: Urban Rehabilitation Client: YAC City of Pesaro Keywords: Landscape, Port, Industrial Heritage, Traces.
The city of Pesaro, one of the most interesting and little-known towns on the Adriatic coast, has a cargo port that needs to be resized. The idea to bring together the new port, considerably smaller, with a leisure and entertainment system within the city today is a challenge for urban planning. The aim of the competition was to create a “Urban Door” that was visible from the sea, and that articulated a system of accommodation, cultural and recreational facilities. The project has followed two main roads, the first was the recovery of the traces of the old commercial port of the city of Pesaro, and the other concerned the creation of a large volume that would represent, in contemporary terms, a “Fondaco”, a sort of warehouse-caravanserai the sea, which would combine the cultures of the Adriatic sea from Venice to Istanbul. The intervention is on the main road and railway connecting the piers to the productive area of The city, the volumes, with the natural exception of the Fondaco, are low and follow the slope of the fell of the piers. 23
