The Island of a million
PALM TREES Bahrain was once home to the ancient Dilmun civilization, with many stories being written in the history books, and passed down the generations as folk tales. With a far more temperate climate than we enjoy today, the Island was once known as the ‘land of a million palm trees’.

Long before the discovery of oil, and even before Bahrain became world famous for its pearling industry, the Island was known throughout the region for its date fruit. Despite the limited rainfall, Bahrain was blessed with artesian springs (‘Bahrain’ means two seas in Arabic, referencing the salt and fresh water found on the Island), which allowed for a robust agriculture. Fruits and spices were traded, with date palm cultivation dominating the economy. There were once 23 varieties of dates
grown in Bahrain, with not only the dates themselves being eaten. The leaves and branches of the date palm were used in everyday life - as shade/shelter and in basketmaking. Dates were Bahrain’s first natural export traded on the “Silk Road”. During the rapid economic growth that Bahrain experienced in the 1950’s and 60’s, the demand for modern city living impacted the landscape of the Island, with farms

being sold to make way for housing and the ‘sweet water’ wells being affected by increased salinity. Due to changing eating habits, many of the remaining palm groves were then replaced by new agricultural activities such as vegetable gardens, flower/tree nurseries, livestock production, and dairy farms. However, historical finds found during various archeological digs throughout the Island, and now on display in the Island’s museums, still point to this rich history. Copper coins at the Bahrain National Museum were the currency used during trades; pots, which once stored date syrup, have been painstakingly restored; and there are dioramas of the early settlers and their lifestyle. Al Jasra Handicraft Centre brings the past to life, with live demonstrations of traditional arts and crafts historically produced by the different villages. Al Jasra Handicraft Centre itself was restored using traditional building methods and materials like corals stones, palm leaves and palm trunks.
Basket weaving using palm tree leaves
The Children and Mother Welfare Society has recently initiated a palm papermaking workshop, teaching women and the younger generation about the significance of palm trees and ensuring that they stay an essential component in the lives of Bahrainis The Palm Paper Workshop makes handmade papers, cards, notebooks and illustrations.

Luqaimat- Traditional arabic dessert
Dates are still hugely popular as a fruit throughout the Middle East – during Ramadan dates are the preferred meal when first breaking fast. Bahraini kitchens are not complete without stocking the fruits as snacks, and date syrup is used extensively in traditional desserts. 7

What inspired you to open your business? I have been working in the Hospitality industry for over 15 years and have met many people with different nationalities and cultures. As I’ve always been interested in meeting new people, I have combined my
passion with a business plan and Pine Tree Assistance (concierge service) was born. Can you give a message to aspiring Bahrainis who wanted to open their own business? I read a quote that stuck with me: “It’s not about ideas. It’s about making ideas happen.” This inspired me and I translated it into a working goal. Think hard about what you love to do and whether you could turn this into a viable business. Chase your dreams and give it your all – make it count.

Riding is a family tradition handed down to a young Claude from his father who told him “riding is in our blood and now that you learn it you will teach the next generation and your friends.” A ‘slight’ detour led Claude to become a chef, gastronomy being another great love of his, but that didn’t stop him from continuing the family legacy of riding. With half of his life spent in the Arabian Peninsula, Claude has embraced the culture and speaks fluent Arabic. “Bahrain is a very welcoming island and I am very lucky to work with a team I can call family. Knowing most of the people made my transition faster. As a passionate rider, a team player and now leading the Harley dealership in Bahrain, I believe that it is very important to keep respect and be a role model in order to keep productive.” Claude joins Harley Davidson under new ownership, now a fully Bahraini company under the flagship of Wheels of Arabia, owned by the Almoayed family. Claude looks forward to his new adventure, with many plans in the pipeline such as road safety training and the Harley Owners Group (HOG) 5th Rally this coming November. Sounds like we’re in for a lot of fun.

This freestyle dancing, or B-Boy, as it’s known, welcomes performers of all ages.

Huey Flava started his passion for B-Boy at the age of 11, when as a curious boy he was astonished by the acrobatic moves that dancers were making in a nearby park. This led to creating his own moves and when street dancing competition was introduced to the Island two years later, with Red Bull hosting the event, Huey Flava (then known as B-Boy Hamani) took part – and promptly won first place! 23

From Farm to Shower Summer is around the corner, which means we often forget to pay special attention to our dry, heat-stressed skin. Marhaba fil Bahrain is thrilled to find a fantastic product that is perfect for the job – and it’s produced locally by Peninsula Farms! Goat Milk soap is the ingenious idea of Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, who proudly shared the secret of how the idea came about. Peninsula Farms is known for its fresh farmer’s products all year round, including dairy products. However, overwhelmed with the high production of their many goats, the team needed a new product to avoid waste. And goat milk soap was the solution. Time consuming research into top quality, local ingredients, along with a lot of patience, has resulted in award-winning skincare products that recently received recognition at the LUCIDEON Beauty Industry Awards in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The all-natural ingredients found in the soap mean that this product is perfect for people with skin sensitivity such as dry and itchy skin and eczema. Goat Milk Soap provides soothing, moisturizing and tightening effects by a combination of ingredients like coconut oil, virgin oil, honey, lavender and even charcoal. Shaikh Rashid would like to invite everyone to support local products and with great pride would like to recommend Peninsula Farm’s Goat Milk Soap. 26

Japan
Inspired after reading that Tokyo was voted as one of the livable city Adeela made sure she set foot to the “Land of the Rising Sun. by Adeela AlMosawi After 10 hours air travel and 10days stay, Japan gave her and family first-hand experience with the hospitality of the Japanese people whom she characterized with politeness, honesty, integrity and very considerate. The country is very clean and safe making her rate Japan as the most astonishing (is astounding a better word?) country she had visited so far. The deep culture grew along as the community developed in higher heights, skyscrapers and modern luxurious living did not vanish traditional practice like temple worships and wearing Kimono a traditional dress. In Gion district is the famous Geisha neighborhood 30
where women are trained to be a hostess. A traditional way that includes arts and skill like dance, music, traditional entertainment to guest in full traditional dress. The training takes five years that gives a special license to host a Geisha. As a frequent traveler health and wellbeing is very important for me and in Japan I can say they have a very healthy lifestyle from the kitchen to daily dose of walking or biking. After exploring thee cities I have not encountered a single obese Japanese person.

It’s also known for formal traditions such as kaiseki dining, consisting of multiple courses of precise dishes, and geisha, female entertainers often found in the Gion district. Osaka is a large port city and commercial center on the Japanese island of Honshu. It’s known for its modern architecture, nightlife and hearty street food. The 16th-century shogunate Osaka Castle, which has undergone several restorations, is its main historical landmark. It’s surrounded by a moat and park with plum, peach and cherry-blossom trees. 31

Home Away From Home By Claudia Hardt

What brought you to Bahrain? In October 1992 my husband’s job as a Swiss banker brought us to this island.
When you arrived in Bahrain what was your first impression: I landed in Bahrain mid-winter to nice weather resembling the Greek spring days to welcome me. I immediately realised that Bahrain’s way of life is more relaxed and smooth, access is everywhere easy and fast and this makes social life easy. Coming from a country with thousands of islands, soon I felt that I could live here for long, as I can see the sea every day.
When you arrived to the island what was your first impression? In 1992, I was amazed how open and easy-going Bahrain was. It was a complete different country to what people had prepared me, saying I would have to wear long conservative clothes and that I should never sit in a car alone with a Bahraini male... Now this makes me laugh, as Bahrainis are so friendly, welcome and open minded. Favorite places in Bahrain? I love to go to Trader Vic’s, for the music, food, and because I feel somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. I also enjoy all those cafés and rooftop bars in Block 338 in Adliya. And I always look forward to eating a delicious Bahraini breakfast at Naseef or Saffron Café. My favorite places to visit are the Heritage Houses in Muharraq and the Qal’at al-Bahrain (Bahrain Fort in Karbabad) with all the long history of the country.

What surprises you the longer you stay on the island? I don’t feel any homesickness for my real home. My feelings for Bahrain and its people and the fact that I regularly refer to Bahrain as “our small country”. I live in one of the safest places on earth. How do you find Bahrain as your second home? In fact I’m not feeling that Bahrain is a second home, but a “home away from home”. Bahrain brings together so many different cultures and influences and locals have very warm personalities. The quality of life is unique thus I’m not surprised at all that it is voted by the expats as the best place to live. It is an expat friendly country and each time I’m landing back in Bahrain, I’m thinking… I’m back at home.
Full name: Boris Thomas Date arrived in Bahrain: October 2015 What brought you to Bahrain? After a temporary secondment in 2003, and other expatriate experience, I was looking to come back in the GCC and I had a job opportunity in 2015. As a geograph and history passionate, the region brinks me a lot of opportunity to explorate and understand a key area of our World. When you arrived to the island what was your first impression? So Parisian with Art de Vivre mindset, I m very sensitive to areas where I can find a morning coffee time with a croissant. Adliyadh area offers everything. And for dinner I like to enjoy an excellent Italian food with Bello Canto musique or the perfect cosy Meat and Co…For Friday brunch, the Hawaiian Waikiki and his pool party is really the place from May to October but my favorite DJ s is the Typhoon Friday s resident at Gulf hotel Favorite places in Bahrain As a frequent traveller, somehow my home is the World and Bahrain offer such a multicultural experience with mutual respect that sometimes I feel even better than home !!! The cosy life of Bahrain during the week end often remind me home. For coocking, for sport we get everything. As Bahreinis are nice and relax people, I feel myself more a guest than a expat and it counts a lots to feel like home.
