BAHRAIN HISTORY

Stories passed on from the time of the Sumerians mentioned a settlement in the deserts of the Middle East - an oasis of life flowing with sweet water springs.

FOREWORD 10

It has been suggested that the legendary verdant island may have been the inspiration for the Garden of Eden, described as “Paradise” in the world’s oldest poetic sagaThe Epic of Gilgamesh. “The Sacred Land” or the “Land of Eternal Life”, previously known as ‘Dilmun’, is now known as the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Early explorers also knew Bahrain as the “Island of a million palm trees”. At least twenty-three varieties of dates were grown on the Island and the leaves, branches, buds and flowers of the date palm were all used extensively. As a result of this bounty, Bahrain had its first natural export.

Only Bahrain can claim a truly integral connection with the sweet-water springs that bubble off-shore, water which first attracted explorers over 2000 years ago. The numerous settlements throughout the millennia can now be seen in the rich archaeological sites around the Island. The springs also encouraged the most lustrous of pearls – the trade which helped build the Island’s early fortunes.

One of the most notable features of the archaeological heritage of Bahrain are the numerous burial mounds, sometime labeled as the world’s largest ancient cemetery, which are scattered over a wide area of Bahrain.

Despite modernization and a cosmopolitan outlook, Bahrain is a unique land with fascinating culture that spans many centuries. A sense of history is tangible even today when you explore the Island’s imposing forts and atmospheric streets, or stroll through its bustling market areas and admire its many magnificent examples of Islamic architecture. While you explore, you are sure to come across another of Bahrain’s most traditional and attractive characteristics – its people, who are among the most welcoming, easy going, friendly and courteous you will meet anywhere in the Arabian Gulf.

11

PEARL OF THE TWO SEA

“Lulu” The pearl, hides in the mythical past of the Arabian Gulf, its long history appears in tales as far back as 5000 years. A symbol of longevity, knowledge, fertility and purity, the mirror-finished gem has a superiority in the history of the Kingdom. Pearling became the main source of income and wealth for many in Bahrain, by the late 19th century. It is said that more that 60,000 people, or nearly the entire population, extending from Kuwait, through Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman, were believed to be employed in the pearl business, which involved everything from building the ships to diving into the Gulf’s abundant oyster beds in search of the precious stones.

The primary pearling season, called Ghous Al Kabir (The Big Dive), occurred between June 1 and September 30. The weather, though hot, was generally clear and calm, ideal for diving. A normal pearling trip could last up to three months and a dhow could have several divers, diving up to 40 times per day, with each dive lasting up to 2-3 minutes. Each diver worked in tandem with a hauler or the ‘seib’. The diver wore a nose plug of bone or wood, leather finger-guards, a stone weight attached to the ankle and, sometimes, a cotton bodysuit to guard against jellyfish - a hazard more feared than sharks.

COLLECTION BRIEF

Descending into the depths of the sea, sometimes as deep as 30 meters, the diver collected oysters in palm rope baskets; when ready to surface they tugged on the rope to be pulled up by the ‘seib’. And, in order to complete their tasks better, divers only ate very light food, mostly like dates and coffee.

The pearl diving trips were usually long and hard. For entertainment and inspiration, Fijri music was performed on the dhows by one main singer, called a nahaam, who is joined by a chorus singing, clapping, and drumming. The songs which were sung, motivated and created a rhythm for the rowers to row the dhows in a synchronized way.

ARTISTS’ QUOTE ON ‘PEARL OF TWO SEA COLLECTION’

“Growing up in Bahrain, I have always been fascinated by the rich history of pearl diving in my country. Each artwork is a journey, a visual narrative that tells the story of the brave divers and their struggles, skillfully depicted on recycled wood, paying homage to the sustainable traditions of our past.

I find the use of recycled wood as my canvas to be symbolic, as it represents the resilience and resourcefulness of the Bahraini people. Each brushstroke on this reclaimed material is a tribute to the strength and determination of our past and present generations. My hope is that my paintings not only showcase the beauty of Bahrain’s pearl diving heritage, but also serve as a reminder of the important lessons it holds for us today.”

“The idea of a modern classic is to reflect the fact that we are a modern circuit but have had the chance to create 20 years of history in the Middle East, which we are really proud of. Ramadan: A Season of Healing, Reconnection, and Holistic Renewal

As the crescent moon graces the night sky, marking the arrival of Ramadan, a sense of peace and anticipation washes over the Muslim community. This holy month, observed during the cooler season this year, transcends mere fasting; it’s a time for inner healing, rekindled connections, and a holistic retreat for the soul.

For 30 blessed days, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to dusk. This physical sacrifice fosters spiritual awareness and self-discipline. Away from distractions, focus shifts inwards, allowing reflection on one’s actions and intentions. It’s a time for seeking forgiveness, strengthening faith, and cultivating compassion.

But Ramadan isn’t just about individual journeys. It’s a powerful force for community building. Families gather for pre-dawn meals (Suhoor) and break their fasts together at sunset (Iftar). Mosques resonate with the melodious recitation of the Quran, bringing people together in prayer and shared spirituality. Charitable acts increase, fostering empathy and strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood.

This year, with the cooler temperatures, the sense of togetherness deepens. Iftar becomes a delightful outdoor experience under the starlit sky, shared laughter echoing through the neighborhoods. Community gatherings and charitable initiatives take on a festive air, celebrating the

blessings of the month. Beyond the spiritual and social benefits, Ramadan also encourages a holistic approach to wellbeing. The rhythm of fasting promotes healthy eating habits and mindful consumption. Early mornings and increased prayer cultivate discipline and inner peace. The focus on spiritual reflection encourages self-care and emotional well-being.

Ultimately, Ramadan is a season of transformation. It’s a time to heal past wounds, reconnect with loved ones and the Divine, and embark on a journey of holistic renewal. As the month draws to a close, Muslims emerge with a refreshed perspective, strengthened faith, and a

SPOTLIGHT

renewed commitment to living a life guided by love, compassion, and purpose.

During the holy month of Ramadan, a custom known as gergean is observed, in which sweets and nuts are traded as a sign of blessings. It is common for people to consume sweets such as dates, nuts, candies, cookies, luqaimat, and qatayef. There are some regions that include gifts or small toys. Gergean encourages the development of community bonds, the sharing of joy, and the coming together of families and neighbors. Through the act of visiting homes, children connect with their cultural heritage by exchanging greetings and well wishes with one another.

Gergean, also known as Ghorayeb or Gargee’an, is a festive occasion celebrated during the middle two weeks of Ramadan. It typically falls on the 14th or 15th day of the month, depending on the moon sighting. On this night, children dress up in traditional clothes and carry colorful bags or baskets, adorned with decorations and lights. They then go door-to-door, reciting rhymes or singing songs, and receive treats from neighbors and loved ones.

Beyond Treats: A Celebration of Community:

While receiving treats is certainly a highlight of Gergean, the true essence of the tradition lies in its ability to strengthen community bonds.

It fosters a sense of sharing, generosity, and joy, bringing families and neighbors together in celebration. Children, often accompanied by parents or older siblings, visit each other’s homes, exchanging greetings and well wishes. This creates a sense of community spirit and allows younger generations to connect with their cultural heritage.

Join us in celebrating the spirit of Ramadan, whether through participating in its traditions, extending goodwill to our Muslim neighbors, or simply appreciating the message of peace and selfreflection it carries.

DISCOVERING ARMENIA

Nestled between Europe and Asia lies the often underrated country of Armenia in the Caucasus region. If you’re looking for an unconventional and exciting travel experience, Armenia has everything you need. From ancient monasteries perched on mountaintops to dramatic volcanic landscapes and the welcoming nature of its people, Armenia has something to offer for everyone. This land is sure to capture your heart and leave you wanting more. It sure did to us!

OUTBOUND
48

Our Armenian adventure began when we landed Zvartnots International Airport in Yerevan, Armenia’s main international airport. Along the way to our hotel, we were welcomed with the majestic Mount Ararat, looming like a friendly giant over the bustling city.

History, culture, and breathtaking landscapes abound in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital. We were so excited to get out and see everything this city has to offer as we got settled into our hotel. Republic Square, encircled by magnificent architecture and teeming with inhabitants basking in the sun and playing in the fountains, was our first destination. We walked the streets, listening to the music and soaking in the sights and sounds of the city as we stopped at several eateries serving up delectable Armenian food.

49

The Garni Temple, a preChristian temple that dates back to the 1st century AD, was a standout experience from our trip. As we wandered through the ruins, we were transported back in time and imagined the rituals and ceremonies that took place there centuries ago.

Mount Aragats is another must-visit attraction in Armenia that we went to. It provides stunning panoramas from its lofty perch at 13,420 feet, making it the nation’s

highest summit. Tourists can go on hikes to the peak, see the adjacent mediaeval monasteries, or just relax in the verdant meadows at the mountain’s base for a picnic. The bright skies and low levels of light pollution at Mount Aragats make it a popular location for stargazing as well. A visit to Mount Aragats is guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience, whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or just seeking a calm escape.

OUTBOUND 50

Throughout our trip, we were struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Armenian people. From the friendly greetings of locals on the street to the welcoming staff at our hotel, we felt welcomed and embraced by this beautiful country.

Armenian hospitality is legendary, and we experienced it firsthand throughout our stay. From the warm smiles of guesthouse owners to the impromptu picnics shared with strangers under the shade of ancient trees, we felt welcomed and embraced. Armenia served as a warm reminder of the basic pleasures of human connection in a world where such things are frequently perceived as impersonal and cold.

51

GETTING AROUND

We found Yandex! Taxi app to be an essential tool for navigating Armenia. Traditional taxis, private automobiles, and even larger vehicles for large groups are all available through Yandex! Taxi. The app was user-friendly providing all the necessary information, including the whereabouts, expected arrival time, and fare, of our driver. While compared to other local transit options, we discovered that the pricing were really cheap. In sum, taking a Yandex! Taxi instead of figuring out the public transit system or negotiating with local drivers was a huge time saver when touring Armenia.

Riding the Cable Car in Tsaghkadzor: A Breathtaking Experience

As part of our itinerary, we chose to ride the cable car at Tsaghkadzor. Exciting as the ride was, it whisked us away from the town and gave us a bird’s-eye perspective of the valleys and mountains below. The village shrank in size as we climbed the mountain, but the breathtaking panoramas were even more breathtaking.

A DELIGHTFUL PALATE:

We had to make the most of our chance to try some regional dishes. Rich and delicious dishes are a

trademark of Armenian cuisine, which draws inspiration from the cuisines of surrounding nations such as Iran, Turkey, and Georgia. We sampled some of the most well-known meals of the nation to fully appreciate its cuisine. One must-try dish is khorovats, which is marinated meat cooked over an open flame. Dolma, a delectable dish made with rice, herbs, and minced meat wrapped in grape leaves, is also an absolute must-try. In addition, we sampled the national favorite—and now my personal favorite—traditional lavash bread, a flatbread made in a tandoor oven.

52

FEW NOTES WHEN PLANNING YOUR OWN ARMENIAN ADVENTURE

We are pleased to share the following notes with you in the event that you are interested in organizing your own Armenian adventure:

Weather: Extreme summers and harsh winters characterize Armenia’s climate. If you want to

experience mild and pleasant weather, spring and fall are the best times to go.

Visa: Armenia allows most nationalities to obtain a visa upon arrival.

Currency: The Armenian Dram is the currency of Armenia. It is common practice for tour guides to take significant currencies such as US dollars.

53

Language: Although Armenian is the de jure language of business and government in Armenia, many people speak English in tourist hotspots.

Getting around: You may travel around quickly and affordably by taking the train, or you can hail a cab. Yandex! Taxi is another option that you might explore.

Attractions: Armenia is home to a wide variety of must-see attractions, from historic cathedrals and monasteries to contemporary art museums. Geghard Monastery, Temple of Garni, and Armenian Genocide Museum are among of the must-see attractions.

Must-Try Dishes: Khorovats (barbecue) and dolma

(stuffed grape leaves) are two of the most well-known meat dishes in Armenian cuisine. Armenian food is an absolute must-try if you’re a foodie or simply want to broaden your horizons.

Overall, an Armenian tour is a unique and unforgettable experience that is sure to leave you with memories that will last a lifetime.

Northern Lights

Witnessing the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora borealis, is an awe-inspiring and unforgettable experience. People have been enamored with the mesmerizing dance of light across the night sky for centuries as a result of charged particles from the sun colliding with Earth’s atmosphere. If you’re planning a journey to witness this celestial phenomenon, here’s a guide to the best places to experience the Northern Lights:

OUTBOUND 56

Iceland

Renowned as the “Land of Fire and Ice,” Iceland is a prime destination for aurora viewing due to its location within the auroral oval, the region where the Northern Lights are most frequently visible. With long, dark winter nights and minimal light pollution, Iceland offers ample opportunities to witness the mesmerizing display of light.

Sweden

Swedish Lapland, with its vast expanse of wilderness and minimal light pollution, provides an ideal setting for witnessing the Northern Lights. The Abisko National Park, located in northern Sweden, is a particularly popular spot for aurora viewing, offering clear skies and stunning scenery.

Norway

Norway’s northern regions, particularly Tromsø, are renowned for their clear skies and high frequency of Northern Lights sightings. The city of Tromsø, located above the Arctic Circle, is known as the “Gateway to the Arctic” and offers a variety of activities and tours dedicated to aurora viewing.

57

Finland

Finland’s Finnish Lapland, known as the “Land of a Thousand Lakes,” is another excellent destination for Northern Lights sightings. The region’s vast forests and pristine lakes provide a picturesque backdrop for the celestial display.

Canada

Canada’s vast northern territories, including Yukon, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut, provide ample opportunities to witness the Northern Lights. The city of Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories, is known as the “Aurora Capital of North America” due to its high frequency of aurora sightings.

Alaska

The United States also offers prime locations for viewing the Northern Lights, particularly in Alaska. Fairbanks, located in the Interior region of Alaska, is a popular destination known for its clear skies and high frequency of aurora sightings.

OUTBOUND
58

Scotland

While not as frequently visible as in more northern latitudes, the Northern Lights can still be seen in Scotland, particularly in the Orkney Islands and the Shetland Islands. The city of Aberdeen, on the east coast of Scotland, is a popular destination for aurora viewing, offering clear skies and a unique perspective on the celestial display.

Greenland

Greenland, with its long, dark winter nights and minimal light pollution, is an ideal location for viewing the Northern Lights. The town of Ilulissat, on the west coast of Greenland, is a popular destination for aurora viewing, offering stunning views of the icebergs and the Northern Lights.

Russia

Russia’s Kola Peninsula, located in the northwestern part of the country, is known for its clear skies and high frequency of Northern Lights sightings. The city of Murmansk, on the Barents Sea, is a popular destination for aurora viewing, offering a combination of urban attractions and natural beauty.

Remember, the best time to see the Northern Lights is during the equinoxes (March or September), when the Earth’s tilt allows for better alignment with the solar wind. Clear skies and minimal light pollution are also crucial factors for optimal viewing. With careful planning and a bit of luck, you’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable spectacle of light painting the night sky.
