Bahrain History which first attracted explorers over 2000 years ago. The numerous settlements throughout the millennia can now be seen at rich archaeological sites around the Island. The springs also encouraged the most lustrous of pearls – the trade which helped build the Island’s early fortunes. One of the most notable features of the archaeological heritage of Bahrain are the numerous burial mounds, some time ago labeled as the world’s largest ancient cemetery, which are scattered over a wide area of Bahrain.
Stories passed on from the time the Sumerians mentioned a settlement in the deserts of the Middle East - an oasis of life flowing with sweet water springs. It has been suggested that the legendary verdant island may have been the inspiration for the Garden of Eden, described as “Paradise” in the world’s oldest poetic saga - The Epic of Gilgamesh. “The Sacred Land” or the “Land of Eternal Life”, previously known as ‘Dilmun’, is now known as the Kingdom of Bahrain. Early explorers also knew Bahrain as the “Island of a million palm trees”. At least twenty-three varieties of dates were grown on the Island and the leaves, branches, buds and flowers of the date palm were all used extensively. As a result of this bounty, Bahrain had its first natural export. Only Bahrain can claim a truly integral connection with the sweet-water springs that bubble off-shore, water 8
Despite modernization and a cosmopolitan outlook, Bahrain is a unique land with fascinating culture that spans many centuries. A sense of history is tangible, even today when you explore the Island’s imposing forts and atmospheric streets, or stroll through its bustling market areas and admire its many magnificent examples of Islamic architecture. While you explore, you are sure to come across another of Bahrain’s most traditional and attractive characteristics – its people, who are among the most welcoming, easy going, friendly and courteous you will meet anywhere in the Arabian Gulf. The island of Bahrain has always been known for its sweet water springs, first mentioned on a 4000 year old clay tablet. To this day, its springs are an integral part of the culture and the people of this island, immortalized in its name – Bahrain means ‘two seas’, referring to the sea which surrounds it and the natural springs on (and off) the island.

Shaikh Salman Bin Khalid Al Khalifa – CEO of Al Zallaq Real Estate Company talks about Zallaq Springs: The southern area of the Island started to become better known as various sporting activities were held, and the recent addition of Zallaq Springs is yet again bringing the area to centre stage. Zallaq Springs’ concept is a return to nature, a destination which reconnects us with flora and fauna.
Recreating balance and harmony with our surroundings, Zallaq Springs hopes to inspire investors of sustainable projects across the Island. Inspired by Japanese Zen gardens, this is the place to revitalize and revive your health, an antidote to the present stress of work, technology and a hectic lifestyle. Zallaq Springs will bring us back to basics, will ground us by providing fresh air, open spaces for recreation (for kids and adults alike), engaging our mind, body and soul - offline and stress-free. 11

Name : Maria Massetti AKA : Chef Susy Nationality : Italian Favourite Meal: Breakfast
Challenge, creativity and confidence are what have made me what I am today. From an early age I had a strong drive to conquer whatever challenges came my way. And being a woman is already a challenge in this industry, in any industry. Past or present, First World or Developing Country, women in positions of power are still a process. And yet, I charmed my way to Arab Royalty – or rather, I cooked my way!
Creativity is the most important ingredient in the kitchen – from the choice of meal to the presentation of the dish. I will never take sole credit for this - I am blessed with a magnificent team, where we all learn from each other. Chef Susy has never been constrained to just cooking – she has offered her services to other restaurants with regards to menu building and staff training; her passion for the industry as a whole is available to all who wish to learn. My coping mechanism for anything in life is confidence that comes from within, which is reciprocated by the trust given to me by those around me. As they say, your energy will attract the same. These three C’s are what make Chef Susy a success. As she says “I will always be a consumer, this keeps me engaged and grounded.”
So, having travelled around the continents, what is Chef Susy’s favourite meal? If you were thinking something complicated – you’d be wrong. Being surrounded by day to day culinary responsibilities of the highest level, Chef Susy likes nothing more than to sit down to a simple breakfast - greasy bacon, chili scrambled eggs, toast with jam and butter … and let’s not forget her cup of coffee. 15

Alexandria Founded by Alexander the Great in approximately 330BC, Alexandria is Egypt’s second largest city and runs as a narrow strip for approximately 30kms along the Mediterranean coast. Temperatures on the coast are cooler than Cairo, and many local families holiday in this seaside city. In order to get the most out of central Alexandria during the summer, you need to be aware of the holiday traffic, which is hectic. Allow yourself ample time to get from one location to another, as most tourist sites open at 9am and close sharply at 4pm. The weather is markedly cooler than the GCC countries and the sea breezes are very pleasant. Essential stops should be the Mursi Abul Abbas Mosque, the most famous mosque in Alexandria.

Mursi Abul Abbas Mosque
Situated in the Anfoushi neighborhood of Alexandria, it stands near to the Citadel of Qaitbay, a fort dating from the 15th century (incredible harbor views). The Bibliotheca Alexandria is the modern-day equivalent to the ancient library and the kids will love the Aquarium and the Catacombs (relax, they’re empty…). Head to the Montazeh (Farouk) Palace, an absolutely stunning once-Royal Residence, and the gardens are gorgeous. The National Museum will take you into the fascinating history of Alexandria and the Roman Theatre is a great visit. There are also Jewellery Museums and Botanical Gardens and Circuses – not to mention the shopping. Market stalls spring up around the tourist areas and you can’t leave Alexandria without buying sea shells for friends and family. The Corniche is a great place to people watch, and the beaches are a big draw. 27

The Hilton Alexandria Corniche
If you’re travelling for business or want to stay centrally so you can take advantage of all the wonderful things to see and do in Alexandria, then this hotel is the one for you. Right on the Corniche, it’s a great base to explore the city streets - the Sidi Bisher Mosque is right behind the hotel. There are many restaurants to choose from – La Gormandise serves breakfast (a very good selection); Santorini, serving Greek food and famous among the locals for its Lamb dish; Salar El-Laialy offers modern Lebanese with live entertainment
and will have tables around the pool area in cooler weather. There’s also a cigar bar as well as Neo, a sports bar and nightclub. For those wishing to conduct business or host an event, the hotel offers the Royal Hall (seats approx.. 270) as well as the Imperial and Superior meeting rooms (seats approx.. 50-60), all beautifully decorated and equipped with the latest equipment and IT support. The Executive Lounge is also fully equipped for the business traveler. The Hilton Alexandria Corniche has its own private beach club, Waves,
with a shuttle that provides a return trip at your request. Waves has a variety of seating, with a kid’s play area, showers, toilets and a lovely stretch of pristine beachfront (the public beaches get very crowded). You can order food from the beach bar menu – you have to try the Catch of the Day, grilled to your liking. Hilton King’s Ranch For a change of pace head out to this fantastic resort. About an hour and a half from central Alexandria (summer traffic) and only 15 minutes from the airport, it’s the perfect destination at which to end your holiday. The hotel boasts the longest, continuous pool in Africa and the outdoor area is fantastic. There’s also an indoor heated swimming pool, billiards, Playstation and a business centre off the lobby. The décor is superb and the rooms (we recommend the pool view) are very spacious. The restaurants are to a very
high standard with Zatar serving Lebanese/Asian cuisine – the Harira soup is divine. There’s also Teatro (breakfast is served here), Splash Café offers a laidback sports bar next to the pool, La Terrase (outdoor seating area), Axis Bar (Karaoke and movie nights) and the Executive Lounge. Boasting a host of business-friendly meeting rooms such as Layali A, B and C which can be combined to form one large room, with a foyer where snacks are served, networking can be conducted and is also the perfect venue for a destination wedding.
There are also 6 smaller meeting rooms. The fitness area is very well equipped and is run in conjunction with the very well-known Premedion Spa and Prevention Centre. Although sharing the hotel grounds, there is a separate entrance. Here they treat body and soul, a holistic approach with treatments ranging from spa treatments (separate areas for men and women), physiotherapy (4D spinal analysis), medical beauty (collagen treatments, non-surgical treatments) and diet/nutrition. There are also 2 hair salons, hydrotherapy pool, Hamam and an executive spa. There are over 40 staff with doctors and nurses on standby. If you’re tempted by the spa, I recommend the hydrotherapy scrub followed by the blissful Cleopatra’s Bath (think milk, honey and rose water…) 29

During your stay, you can play tennis at the Tennis court, mini golf at the driving range or independently workout at the Fitness Centre. The hotel also offers the chance to experience the Red Sea or go on Sight Seeing Tours. Traveling as a family has also never been so comfortable as the hotel provides services, activities and entertainment by the animation 32
team to constantly keep your children active and accommodated for. Couples also particularly like this location as the resort is sectioned exquisitely to ensure all guests, couples, families or friends all enjoy their time. There is a variety of options for dining at Sharks Bay Hotel, with 13 places to satisfy your hunger. A Marhaba favourite is the view this hotel has to offer at its Seafood Restaurant that faces the seafront! The view at that restaurant is mesmerizing when having dinner, and especially romantic if you were with your partner.

Home Away From Home By Claudia Hardt
Full name: Mark Williams Date arrived in Bahrain: 2011 Nationality: British What brought you to Bahrain? My wife and I first came to Bahrain early 2006 for a weekend visit very soon we found that we were spending every weekend in Bahrain. In 2011 we decided to make Bahrain our home with me commuting daily across the border to Saudi for work. Favourite places in Bahrain? Anyplace I can see the sea. I love walking beside the water in the early morning or dusk, watching the boats, absorbing the relaxing atmosphere. What surprises you the longer you stay on the Island? There’s new development in every direction, such as Bahrain Harbour development, new Malls in Juffair and new road systems. Yet, you don’t have to move too far from the main roads to find traditional architecture in a mixed and multicultural environment.

What brought you to Bahrain? A documentary I saw about Bahrain some years ago, that’s the why we are here. David found work with the British Council Bahrain and we found our perfect home in Amwaj!
When you arrived to the island what was you first impression? In March the weather on the island is very nice, so my first impression was very good. I thought that “my new home” was much better than I imagined.
When you arrived to the island what was your first impression? The first two things I saw were construction sites and palm trees! The friendliness of people the moment we arrived is indeed unforgettable and the sight mix of nationalities, that means cultures.
What surprises you the longer you stay on the island? I think Bahrain it’s a surprise itself. I am surprised how the Arab people are so similar to the Spanish people, we have a lot of traditions in common, even some words, that´s amazing!
Favourite places in Bahrain? I love the area around the National Museum and the Corniche, where you can find Laialy Zaman Restaurant (next to Funland Bowling). Perfect spot by the sea, watch jet ski-enthusiasts, enjoy fresh juice and Arabic sweets. I love the Lagoon at night, when it’s lit up and you can have a coffee.
How do you find Bahrain as your second home? I find Bahrain as second home like a perfect place. The Bahraini people are very friendly and welcoming and the way of life on the island makes this country like a perfect place to live away home.
