BAHRAIN’S RICH TRADING PAST

Trading timeline

Bahrain was the central site of the ancient Dilmun civilization, with earliest written records dating it to the end of the 4th millennium BC right up to 538BC. The location and length of settlement made Dilmun a perfect trading partner for Tarut Island (Saudi Arabia) and Failaka Island (in Kuwait), as well as further afield such as Elam (Oman), Alba (in Syria), Haittan (in Turkey) and the Indus Valley. In addition to being on the trade route, Dilmun had its very own products to trade such as dates and other palm products –the Island was known as ‘the island with a million palm trees’, boasting no less than 23 varieties.

UNVEILING BAHRAIN’S GEM: A MARITIME OASIS ON THE SILK ROAD

The Silk Road, often envisioned as a dusty caravan trail winding through Central Asia, held a hidden jewel - the maritime Silk Road. And nestled within its shimmering waters, a vital player emerged: the archipelago of Bahrain.

Picture a bygone era, roughly between the 2nd century BC and the 15th century AD, when the seas were rich with vibrant marine life. Dazzling dhows carrying treasures of exotic goods navigated a network of trade routes, weaving a tapestry of commerce across the Indian Ocean and beyond. Bahrain, strategically positioned in the heart of the Arabian Gulf, became a crucial maritime crossroads.

A Bustling Hub:

Seafarers from China, India, and Africa sought sanctuary and opportunity on Bahrain’s welcoming shores. The island transformed into a vibrant marketplace, a symphony of languages and cultures. Chinese silk, its texture whispering tales of the Orient, mingled with the heady aroma of Indian spices. Arabian frankincense, its fragrance

a whisper of the desert sands, mingled with the iridescent luster of Bahrain’s own precious gems—pearls, plucked from the turquoise depths by skilled Bahraini divers.

Unearthing the Past:

History whispers its secrets through archaeological digging. At the imposing Qal’at al-Bahrain fortress, a silent testament to the island’s rich past, a treasure trove awaited. Unearthed during excavations were Chinese coins dating back to the 15th century. These tangible remnants are irrefutable proof of the bustling trade that once flowed through Bahrain’s veins.

Beyond a Stopover:

Bahrain wasn’t just a convenient stopover; it offered its own treasures. The island’s fertile soil yielded luscious dates, a sweet treat for weary travelers. Bahrain’s famed pearl divers, their breath held beneath the waves, brought forth an abundance of glistening pearls, coveted across the Silk Road for their beauty and rarity.

Echoes in the Modern World: The legacy of the Silk Road lives on. Today, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) seeks to revitalize these ancient trade routes. Bahrain, ever the perceptive participant, is actively involved in BRI projects, ensuring its continued relevance in the global trade landscape.

A Journey Through Time:

A visit to Bahrain is a journey through time. Explore the captivating Qal’at al-Bahrain, where proofs of the Silk Road trade echo through the centuries. Immerse yourself in the bustling Manama Souq, a modern-day testimony to the ancient marketplace. Witness the skilled hands of contemporary pearl divers, keeping a tradition alive that once fueled the Silk Road’s vibrant exchanges.

Bahrain, a vibrant archipelago with a golden heart, stands tall as a testament to the enduring power of trade and cultural exchange. Its story is a reminder that even the smallest of players can leave an indelible mark on the grand tapestry of history.

BUSINESS LUNCH AT MUJU

Located in the scenic Amwaj Islands, the Dragon Hotel’s Muju Restaurant offers a distinctive business lunch experience that combines the best of both worlds: a buffet of starters and an à la carte main course. This innovative approach not only provides a variety of options but also helps to minimize food waste.

Upon arriving at Muju Restaurant, I was immediately impressed by its elegant ambiance and stunning sea views. The buffet spread was a feast for the eyes, featuring a delectable selection of salads, Arabic mezze, soups, desserts, and a juice bar. The quality of the ingredients was evident in every dish, and the flavors were expertly balanced.

For the main course, I opted for the traditional Arabic dish, which proved to be an excellent choice. My colleague ordered prawn stir-fry noodles, served with smokey, aldente noodles and lots of prawns, I may say. The portions were both generous, which made us share, and the flavors were authentic. They prepared the main course ordered to perfection, and it was served promptly. I was particularly impressed by the option to choose my main course à la carte, as it allowed me to select exactly what I wanted to eat.

The service at Muju Restaurant was impeccable. The restaurant

team was attentive, courteous, and knowledgeable about the menu. They were always on hand to assist with any requests and ensure that our dining experience was enjoyable.

One of the highlights of the lunch was the opportunity to enjoy the stunning sea views. The restaurant’s location provides a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere, making it the perfect place to unwind during a busy workday.

The juice bar was another standout feature of Muju Restaurant. The bartender was skilled and creative, preparing a variety of refreshing and flavorful drinks. Their friendly demeanor and attention to detail made the experience even more enjoyable.

Overall, my business lunch at the Dragon Hotel’s Muju Restaurant was a delightful experience. It was a delightful lunch break, thanks to the excellent food, service, and ambiance, as well as the buffet and à la carte menu with a unique twist. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a delicious and satisfying business lunch, whether for personal time or a corporate gathering.

Riding the Rails: San Francisco’s Famed Cable Cars

Imagine living in San Francisco during the 1850s and having to walk everywhere because there was no public transportation. The rich and affluent had expensive horses and elaborate carriages for transportation through the growing city of muddy streets and ruts. But if you were

middle class or lower... you walked.

Large vehicles (crude, unpopular coaches) equipped with heavy tires to negotiate the ruts in the unpaved streets began appearing. Pulled by a fourhorse team, the driver sat on a raised seat in the front

and collected fares through a hole in the carriage’s roof. Passengers entered through a small door in the rear via a set of steps attached to the driver’s legs by a strap. When the strap pulled against his leg, the driver knew someone was getting into or exiting the coach.

In 1860, horsecars appeared, hoping to replace and improve upon the omnibus coach. Although more efficient, they had great difficulty navigating steep hills. The horses were unsanitary with their droppings and potential disease-carrying germs.

A more efficient mode of transportation—the cable car—appeared in 1873. Everything was about to change!

The Cable Car

Andrew Hallidie, the cable car inventor, came to the U.S. from England in 1852. His father, an engineer and inventor, held a patent for the manufacture of wire rope. Andrew worked both as a blacksmith and surveyor in California’s gold fields. His construction of a wire ropemaking machine, according to historical information, was his start to inventing

the cable car. As the story goes, “on a drizzly day in 1869, he watched horrified as a heavily loaded, horsedrawn streetcar slipped and slid back down a steep grade, dragging the fallen horses to their deaths.”

Witnessing this tragedy, Hallidie was determined to invent a strong cable grip to pull streetcars up the steep San Francisco hills. In 1872, he began building the world’s first cable railway. His system

OUTBOUND

laid cable in a slot beneath the street and relied on a steam-powered plant to run the cable through the street. Although it ran on only one street and was slow, it was successful enough to garner investments. The cable car was transportation’s king until April 18, 1906.

How It Works

Recently I visited the Cable Car Museum to learn how this remarkable machine worked, as well as rode them around the steep Nob Hill area

and watched as they were turned around to return in the opposite direction.

Very simply, the cable car can only run along tracks by grabbing onto moving cables since it has no motor of its own. Each cable line is a length of cable spliced together. Each car is equipped with a large clamp, called a grip, that grabs onto the cable to move forward. The cable car conductor releases the grip from the moving cable to stop for passengers and traffic.

Upstairs in the museum, the cables (wire rope) enter into the powerhouse from the street, wrap around the sheaves in a figure-8 pattern, and then move back to tension sheaves. From the tension wheels (sheaves), the cables then travel in a channel under the floorboards and back into the streets. The museum’s lower level was under the street, where the huge wheels were visible and operating.

Obviously, a cable is under tremendous stress and eventually wears out, needing repair. According to museum information, “the whole cable almost never breaks all the way through. The most common cable damage is the breaking of an individual wire or strand under the street.

OUTBOUND

Once detected, the cable is then run slowly through the system until the damaged area comes into the barn, where it is repaired. During repairs, the cable is stopped and the cars do not move on the streets served by that cable.” A cable lasts anywhere from 75 to 250 days. The San Francisco cars stop at midnight, and repairs are done between then and 6 a.m. when the cars are in the barn. “The old cable is cut and attached to the new cable at one end,” reads the cable repair information board.

“The winding machinery then pulls the new cable into the cable channel behind the old one at half speed. When the new cable has been pulled through the entire channel and back into the powerhouse (barn), the two are cut apart. The old cable is scrapped, and the new cable is spliced together to form a loop.”

Today’s cable car travels at 9.5 miles per hour on four different streets: Powell, Mason, Hyde, and California. The cable lengths range from 9,050 feet to 21,500 feet.

The combined result of the devastating 1906 earthquake and great fire signaled the demise of the cable car. With the city rebuilding and modernizing its streets, cable cars were no longer needed. Now electric trolley wires were strung, and the electric streetcar was replacing the once proud cable car system.

Fast forward to the mid-20th century; San Francisco’s officials planned to scrap the cable cars that had been

operating on the steepest city streets. Residents were outraged when they heard of the plan. In November 1947, Proposition 10 was placed on the ballot, and Californians overwhelming voted to save the cable cars.

The rest, as they say, is history. The beloved cable cars are a huge visitor attraction, and the cable car museum is a treasure trove of information, memorabilia, and vintage photos.

And for those who remember the counterculture Summer of Love in 1969, the city got behind the psychedelic craze and artistry of the time and promoted the cable cars with posters featuring the artwork of the day with its bright colors, warped lettering, collages, and surrealistic distorted depictions.

If you visit San Francisco, you need to carve out an hour or so to visit this interesting museum and, of course, ride the rails.

Embark on an Italian Adventure: A Picturesque Journey Through Peace

From Fiumicino Airport, we caught the train to the city of Rome. The 30-minute ride was pleasant and provided a view of the Italian countryside, preparing us for our time in Rome.

and Heritage.

Arrival in Rome.

Rome: A Walk through Time

City of Rome: Our tour began in the heart of Rome, at the historic Colosseum, which stands as a tribute to the Roman Empire’s magnificence. Walking through its arches, we could almost hear the echoes

of gladiators and the roar of the audience. The Palatine and Roman Forum, two nearby historic sites, also let us make the most of our time there. The Palatine Hill offered a stunning panoramic view of the ancient city, allowing us to imagine what life was like for the

emperors who once resided there. The Roman Forum, with its impressive ruins and temples, provided a glimpse into the political and social life of ancient Rome. The sheer scale and history of this renowned edifice astounded us.

Vatican City: Next, we visited the spiritual and cultural refuge of Vatican City. The splendor of St. Peter’s Basilica and the spectacular paintings of the Sistine Chapel were the highlights of our tour. We were not allowed to take photographs inside the Sistine Chapel, so we simply enjoyed its beauty and wonder. The tranquil environment and deep feeling of history made it an amazing experience.

OUTBOUND

A coastal retreat

Following three days of exploring the historical treasures of Rome, we decided to unwind by the seaside. We spent four beautiful days outside the city, soaking up the sun on pristine beaches and admiring the breathtaking sunsets. The soothing sound of the waves and the stunning views provided an ideal setting for rest and introspection.

Culinary delights.

Our Italian journey would not have been complete without trying the local cuisine. We ate actual Italian pizza, pasta, and gelato, and each bite was a delicious explosion of flavors. Evenings were spent enjoying aperitivo, a beloved Italian ritual of pre-dinner beverages and appetizers, which brought the ideal finishing touch to our days.

Conclusion

Our trip to Italy was the ideal combination of historical exploration, peaceful leisure, and gourmet pleasure. From the ancient wonders of Rome to the tranquil coastal hideaway and the wonderful Italian cuisine, every moment was full of beauty and amazement. Italy’s allure and diversity have made an unforgettable impression on our hearts, and we can’t wait to return and discover more of her treasures.

The Bahrain Boxing Federation is proud to bring another epic international Boxing Match to the shores of Bahrain with Royal Rumble III, the annually anticipated clash between Bahrain’s Royal Guard Boxing Team and the British Army, represented this year by a team from the Royal Engineers. With The Royal Guard winning the rst two of these tournaments, we are sure that you will see the Royal Engineers out for retribution and to prevent a hat-trick of wins for the team from Bahrain; it’s sure to deliver an exciting and invigorating experience for all concerned on the evening of 29th November 2024.

This annual event aims to drive forward the progress of Boxing in Bahrain and in tandem focuses on supporting the Royal Humanitarian Fund as its chosen charitable cause.

Don’t miss out on a wonderful example of this noble sport, supported by guest appearances from former World Champion Amir Khan together with Lawrence Okolie, the reigning World Boxing Council Bridgerweight title holder. To add to the pomp and circumstance, the Bahrain Defence Forces Band will precede the entry of the evening’s boxers to the event.

The evening is being hosted in Crowne Plaza’s newly refurbished state of the art Ballroom, with their wonderfully talented Chef’s providing a suitably lavish dinner prior to the sporting focus of the evening’s entertainment.

Please nd below the options for joining us at this most prestigious event, proudly under the patronage of His Highness Shaik Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Council for Youth and Sports, President of the General Sports Authority and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee.

We look forward to seeing you at there - let the battle will commence!
