Rowena Mariano AlMusawi Publisher
Our summer issue celebrates one of the oldest traditions of boat building - the dhow, a sailing vessel which has shaped trade in the Middle East. Summer and the accompanying heat creates problems when trying to entertain the family, but Marhaba has found a not-so-secret paradise just off Bahrain’s coast - Hawar Islands, a trip worth making with its refurbished hotel and excellent tours that get you right up close to nature. For those of you who can’t get away for an extended weekend due to work, or for inbound travelers, have a look at our Cityscape pages - local hotels which offer great package deals for an enjoyable weekend away, plus entire business and meeting facilities. The Island may be steaming up, but we’ve found you a selection of great member clubs, with cooling swimming pools, great restaurants, and fun activities for the family. Marhaba fil Bahrain sat down for elite sky-high dining at the Capital Club, found out about teeing off at night at the Royal Golf Club and pumped up our energy with Jiu-Jitsu classes at the Rugby Club. Not to forget our regular features - we present this edition’s signature dish which will surely peak your appetite, as well as our concierge page, I Love Bahrain and Home Away From Home. This issue also introduces sports tourism and a diplomatic feature, plus lot more. We hope you enjoy Marhaba fil Bahrain’s latest edition. And remember - safe tanning!

Cover Story
Al Banush (The Dhow) When thinking of traditional transport for Bahrain, most minds turn to camel caravans trudging across endless sand. However, as the sea has been incredibly important to Bahrain’s trading expertise, it’s the dhow (Al Banush) we’ll be looking at.
11
Cover Story
Perfectly suited to Bahrain’s seas with their shallow draft, and renowned for their maneuverability, around 2,000 Bahraini dhows sailed the seas in the late nineteenth century, a number which has sadly fallen sharply in modern times. Before the discovery of oil fishing, trading and pearling were all deeply rooted as an important source of income for Bahraini’s, and it was the dhow which made these activities possible. Dhows carried fruits, livestock and water, as well as all other basic supplies, to communities across the region. As Bahrain is knows as one of the oldest trading ports in the Gulf, it’s no surprise that the Island is well known for its dhow building techniques and the craftsmanship it takes. As there are no suitable trees for ship-building on the Island, Pine wood has been imported from India for generations. All other materials, labourers and craftsmen are all locally found. The skilled artisans who design these craft are called Gallafoon or Gallaf, and often shape whole boats with only mental notes to help them, the designs having been given to the younger builders by word of mouth. 12
Cover Story
There are four main dhow designs, namely: Sambuk (or Sambook) The most commonly used, graceful with a tapered bow (front) a high, square stern (back) and has two masts. It was used for pearling, but today sees it used for fishing and commerce (cargo/passenger transport). Boom The Boom is a larger vessel, ranging from 50 to 120 feet long, and weighing up to 400 tons. Double ended (pointed at both ends, the Boom has a straight stem post and is still important in Gulf commerce.
Baggala Rather rarer is the Baggala, a deep-sea ship. Often carrying cargo up to 300 tons, and with a crew numbering well over 100, its build strongly reflected 16th and 17th century Portuguese vessels, with a high, squared poop (a roof over the rear cabin) and like the Sambuk has two masts. Jalboot The jalboot, a single-masted ship, is much smaller at only 20-50 tons and very popular on the pearling banks of the Gulf. Its design points to having derived from the British jolly boat, with an upright bow stem (front section) and transom stern (back surface).
13
Cover Story
Dhow building is now firmly entrenched in Bahrain’s history and is passed from one generation to another. One can still visit with some of the few remaining builders along the Khalifa Al Khabeer Highway, next to the fisherman’s port in Muharraq.

Those of you who have been putting off a trip to Hawar islands in favour of other activities should immediately rectify that mistake – I have lived in Bahrain for 11 years and this year was the first time I’d made the trip. Trust me, it won’t be my last.

I was whisked away from Durrat Marina in one of several new boats owned by Southern Tourism Company for the very pleasant 40-ish minute trip to the main Island. As it turns out, Hawar isn’t just one island – it’s an archipelago of 16 islands! The hotel has been partly renovated recently, the entrance and lobby are welcoming, fresh and reminiscent of a holiday home near the beach – which is exactly the relaxed feeling the staff are at pains to create. There are wonderfully cold refresher towels and home-made lemon water as you arrive, and the smiles of welcome are genuine. Check in is quick and efficient and then you are escorted to your room in one of 4 wings – each named after a particular animal found on the islands. Rooms are spacious, with a good sized bathroom and a lovely balcony. Your room boasts another two bottles of the lemon water – which, during summer, is much appreciated. The a/c is cold and the beds comfortable, with plenty of cupboard space. Meals can be taken in the hotel’s restaurant or outside under the stars, a beautiful way to dine. Friday nights feature live music and a lively atmosphere.

The hotel boasts two lovely, sandy beaches and a safe lagoon in which to swim (beware, the sea is saltier than near Bahrain’s mainland), as well as two swimming pools and two water slides. There are also free bicycles if you wish to take a spin around the hotel compound. Kayaks, a pedalo and a sea tricycle are also available free of charge. Included in the price of your stay (which is all-inclusive) is a wonderful coach trip to see some of the amazing wildlife and hear the fascinating history of the island. Originally settled by the Dewasir Bedouin tribe (now the Al Dosseri family) in the 1800’s, several villages can still
be identified by their ruins, and are fascinating to walk around. Access to the islands are strictly monitored, which has allowed for some wonderfully unspoiled natural habitat. The islands are home to many bird species such as the Socotra Cormorants, the Sooty Falcon, Heron and Osprey. One island has a fair-sized turtle colony and in the cooler months of September and October, dugongs swarm to the area and can be seen by the hundreds. There are small herds of Arabian Oryx and Gazelles (although the Mountain Goats were my favourite, boasting very impressive horns), as well as a fantastic batch of lizards who spend their time sunning and posing on their small sandy hills.
Spotlight
Hawar Beach Hotel are keen to promote Hawar Islands’ incredibly diverse wildlife, both on land and at sea - has introduced optional morning bicycling trips to see the flora and fauna (less impact on the landscape) and is in the process of devising snorkeling trips to some of the smaller islands. I was lucky enough to join one of these outings, kayaking out to the island before snorkeling around it. I spotted large Angel fish, Shari and a lonely Hammour, with beautifully clear water an added bonus. The stark, largely untouched beauty of the islands, the surprisingly rich wildlife, the fantastically clean air – all this coupled with the wonderful hospitality at the Hawar Beach Resort (not to mention the great food) makes for a great getaway, at a great price too. So, don’t delay. Call up and book your seat on the next boat out to Hawar – you won’t regret it.

Capital Club Bahrain Capital Club, long known as Bahrain’s premier private business and social club, is now a world-class culinary destination . . . Capital club, celebrating its 8th year of unparalleled and exclusive service in Bahrain, is looking to put Bahrain on the global gastronomical map by hosting Michelinstarred and World’s 50 Best chefs for special events throughout 2017. Sumeet Jhingan General Manager of the Capital Club Bahrain
42
Sumeet Jhingan, General Manager of the Capital Club Bahrain, is the creative genius behind this move. Hailing from New York, Sumeet’s family members have been based in the Middle East for over 20 years and he counts Dubai and the New York as home. Starting his working career at the tender age of 17, Sumeet credits his success to having a big dream and a passion for success, as well as plenty of hard work.
Leisure
Holding a BBA (Marketing major) and a Diploma in Hospitality Management from Australia, as well as a Project Management certification from Stanford University, Sumeet’s global upbringing reflects clearly in his absolute passion for encompassing a global view in everything he does. Although he’s very clear about keeping Bahrain as the focus of the Capital Club’s overall feel, he’s also been keen to introduce international influences when he can. And with Sumeet’s years of experience in managing Award winning restaurant groups and hotels particularly with his association with 2 & 3 Michelinstarred chefs, what better way to bring the world to Bahrain than through incredible gastronomy, something Bahraini’s value very highly. The Celebrity Chef Series aims to raise the restaurant game in Bahrain by inviting Michelin-starred and world-best chefs to create tasting menus for discerning palates throughout the Kingdom. The Chefs will also visit local farms and the fish and meat markets, and will be urged to use at least 70% local produce in their creations. What better way to fuse Bahrain and international cuisine? So far the Capital Club has hosted Thomas Troisgros from Olympe Restaurant Rio de Janeiro as well as Paulo Airaudo, owner and
chef at Amelia Restaurant in San Sebastián, Spain. And in keeping with Sumeet’s desire for Bahrain to be more than just a setting, he’s arranged for young Bahraini chefs to cook alongside the master chefs and created events in which visitors can book a seat at these incredible events. Sumeet’s first impression of Bahrain was not only the heat (he arrived early last summer) but also the genuine warmth of the people. Thankfully, that impression has been a lasting
one, and he’s quick to point out that it’s only through the efforts of the closely knit team at the Capital Club, as well as the unwavering support of the Directors, that Sumeet could begin to realize his Celebrity Chef Series. Located on the 51st and 52nd levels the Bahrain Financial Harbour, the views are sensational. Outbound
“Hakuna Matata,” a wonderful phrase in the Swahili language which means “no worries” or “there are no problems”, is a permanent companion when travelling through Tanzania. Everywhere you go people greet you with a friendly “Jambo” (Hello) - a warm welcome to a beautiful country! My trip starts in Arusha, the meeting point for safari enthusiasts, easily reached from Dar es Salaam. The minute you step out of the plane you will be amazed by the view. Mount Meru, at a height of more than 4,000 metres, is right in front
of you and gives you an idea of how breathtaking Mount Kilimanjaro, an hour’s drive away, must be. Arusha has a mild climate and is close to Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Olduvai Gorge, Tarangire National Park, Mount Kilimanjaro and its own Arusha National Park on Mount Meru. The town was founded by German colonialists when the territory was part of German East Africa in 1900. Arusha has a wide number of hotels and there is something available for any budget, from backpacker hostels to upmarket hotels.

As I have a passion for historical hotels, I booked a stay at the oldest one in town, the Arusha Hotel. The hotel boasts 86 elegantly appointed rooms; established in 1894, the Arusha Hotel is believed to be one of the oldest hotels in East Africa. There are more than 400 safari companies in and around Arusha; I found this hard to believe until I looked out to the street the following morning - every second car is a safari jeep, picking up and dropping off travellers from around the globe. The driver and tour guide sent by my safari company greeted me with a big smile on their faces, and to my huge surprise no one else has booked the tour. I am the only passenger and extremely happy getting an exclusive safari experience. So I lean back and relax, sitting in a big jeep on the way to Lake Manyara, the first stop of my three days of adventure in the bush.
56
On the way to Lake Manyara we pass many Maasai villages which provide an excellent insight into the traditional life. The Maasai people are among the best known local populations due to their residence near the many game parks of the African Great Lakes, and their distinctive customs and dress. Lake Manyara National Park is one of Tanzania’s smaller wilderness sites. Herds of elephants and buffaloes, thousands of flamingos, cheetahs, giraffes, impalas, olive baboons, monkeys, hippos, Egyptian mongooses and many more can be seen. The national park is a great place for a fun-filled game drive and offers beautiful views of the lake. For the overnight stay we drive to a camp site twenty minutes up the hill. I have the option to stay in a lodge room, a simple camping tent with sleeping bag, or an upgraded

spacious tent with a proper double bed, hot and cold shower facilities and a terrace with an amazing view facing a sweeping valley — just like “Out of Africa”. Of course, I choose that one. After a hearty breakfast, next morning. we continue our journey to the mountains, to Ngorongoro Crater. It’s not a national park, rather an area which was established to conserve wildlife and other natural resources. You have the unique experience of an amazing variety of wildlife found in the area all year round, with a permanent population of more than 25,000 animals. Ngorongoro Crater is a must see and you will be rewarded with stunning scenery and unlimited picture opportunities with lions walking towards your jeep or sitting and sleeping in the middle of the road, only an arm’s length away.
Following another night in my luxury tent we make our way back to Arusha the next day but not without having another action filled game drive, this time in Tarangire National Park, famous for its herds of elephants. Hundreds of elephants can be watched while migratory wildebees, zebras, buffaloes, impalas, gazelles, hartebeest and eland can be found too. During my safari I was incredibly lucky to see all of the Big Five: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalos and rhinos, thanks to my excellent driver and tour guide. After spending a few hours in Tarangire, we return back to our starting points, the Arusha Hotel, where a comfortable bed and a nice hot cup of tea is waiting for me, rounding off a wonderful, once-in-a lifetime safari experience. 57

The most notable feature of the archaeological heritage of Bahrain are the numerous burial mounds, sometimes labled as the world’s largest ancient cemetery, which are scattered at numerous locations over a wide area of Bahrain. In spite of the tremendous urban development witnessed by the Kingdom of Bahrain over the last 30 years, there are several burial mound sites which still remain, like the Burial Mounds of Hamad Town, Buri, Jari Al-Sheikh, Aa’li (Royal mounds), Janabiah, Jannousan and Shakoura.
Barbar Temple Saar

The Barbar temples were discovered in 1954. Its excavations were continued by a Danish expedition until 1962, by which time three superimposed temples had been investigated and dated to around 2000 BC, at the climax of the Dilmun civilization. Temples 1 and 11 are built on two superposed platforms and are connected to a monumental well and its spring, apparently played an important role in the local cult. Little remains of the third temple, which includes a large square platform and was apparently larger than the two previous ones.

Home Away From Home By Rosette M. Obedoza
Name:
Maria Zaldua & Rabab Sayed Hashem aka Bobbie (daughter)
Nationality: Filipina & Rabab is Bahraini Date arrived in Bahrain: 1997 Place of Work: Domain Hotel What surprised you about Bahrain? The warmth of the Bahrainis and its multicultural environment.
Name:
Amy, Eric and Audrey Perando Nationality: American Places visited while in Bahrain? Royal Camel Farm, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Park, Bab al Bahrain, shopping centres, Bahrain Fort, lots of restaurants... I’m sure there’s more but it’s been a long year! What surprised you since living here in Bahrain? My biggest surprise is how much I’ve come to enjoy living in Bahrain. I’ve been reminded of just how much of the world there still is to see. I’ve made friends with people from all walks of life and they’ve all shared their stories with me. Bahrain has enriched my life in ways that I could never have imagined. What are your favorite places and things to do in Bahrain? I love Bab al Bahrain. I’ve developed a deep and abiding love for two things: karak tea and pashminas and I can find both at Bab al Bahrain. I buy a new pashmina each time I go to the souq. When the three of us are together we love to go out to eat a meal and just walk around the island. If you could pick one quote or piece of advice to newcomers or anyone moving here, what would that be? My biggest recommendation is to get off the base; get out of Juffair. Go out and volunteer. Try to leave the island a better place for having hosted you and your family. 80
Favorite things to do: • Going to cinema • travelling is my stress reliever • Restaurant hopping is easy in Bahrain • With all the spices and fresh foodies I love to cook My daughter love: Movies, Starbuck and art lounge Message to people coming or who just arrived in Bahrain: Bahrain is one of the best places to live in the middle east. When I first arrived twenty years ago, I had no idea I was embarking on a rewarding lifelong journey that would make me set roots here. Home is where the heart is and my heart is right here in Bahrain.
