Publisher’s Note

There are definite signs that Spring is in the air – birds are leaving for cooler climates, greenery sprouts from what was recently waste ground, and gardens are blooming. All this despite the unprecedented thunder storms that lashed our Island. However, rain or shine, life goes on and this quarter’s Marhaba fil Bahrain features some fantastic up-and-coming events, as well as a variety of food articles that are sure to stir your taste buds.

Rowena Mariano AlMusawi Publisher

Bahrain is all about the fast lane in April – Formula 1 comes to our shores for three thrilling days: 14, 15, 16 April. Entertainment isn’t geared only towards petrol heads – the Bahrain International Circuit will be hosting Ice Age-themed activities around the course (imagine dinosaurs wandering around) as well as super stars performing to the crowds at night – Enrique Iglesias, for starters! And for those of you who’d like a taste of all that speed, look out for our editorial team’s nail-biting 4x4 experience at the BIC. Also taking advantage of the milder weather is the Spring of Culture, a popular fixture on the Island. World class performers are brought in with shows at venues throughout Bahrain – we’ll be snapping up our tickets for Tom Jones! One of the venues to offer their space is Bahrain Bay and Marhaba fil Bahrain’s Editor sat down with three key personalities to discuss its importance as it literally reshapes the Island’s landscape. And with all that adrenaline and excitement, what better way to relax than with one of Bahrain’s modern customs– Friday Brunch. If you’ve not yet been, you’ll appreciate our review of the top brunches on offer. We also take a look at Theme nights and lots more during our culinary trip – from traditional Ramadan dishes, to international kitchens and their delicious offerings. It’s a gourmet’s delight. Belafiya! (Bon appetit!)

Bahrain Bay is the blue-chip development which lies on the north coast of Bahrain, housing the stunning Arcapita headquarters, which became fully operational in 2010 and the elegant Four Seasons Hotel, which opened in 2015.

Bahrain Bay

“the city of tomorrow”

The development covers an area of 1.45 million sqm subdivided into 34 plots. Projects which are soon to complete are the Al Baraka Bank offices and the United Towers, which will house the Wyndham Hotel. Waterbay, a uniquely designed tower residential complex by Bin Faqih Real Estate Investment, is currently under construction. Upcoming projects include the J. W Marriott Hotel by Khaleej Capita, the regional headquarters of AXA, Baycity and Wafra Tower.

Already one of the busiest trading ports in 1800, with a vibrant fishing and pearling industry, there followed an economic and urban boom after the discovery of oil in the 1930’s. Real estate developments changed the landscape, giving rise to Bahrain being shortlisted as one of the “Global Cities of the Future”. Bahrain Bay, the man-made island that changed Bahrain’s skyline, sees ongoing development reshape the waterfront. With the opening of The Avenues, a new take on commercial malls, Bahrain Bay will be home for signature and local brands, merging traditional and cosmopolitan living. Manama, the Kingdom’s capital, has a very strong hold on its history, but has welcomed Bahrain Bay and the vibrant and ambitious plans that new developments promise. Marhaba fil Bahrain recently sat down with 3 key players in Bahrain Bay. 13

Gagan Suri CEO, Bahrain Bay Tell us about yourself. Born and raised in India, I graduated from the Indian Institute of Hotel Management in New Delhi, then gained my BA in Hotel Management from Mercyhurst College, Pennsyvania. I then decided to further my studies in an unrelated field, earning an MBA in Finance, which led from hospitality to investment banking. I have worked on the USA’s West Coast, Canada and then London. From London I next came to the GCC, where I started out in Kuwait, then moved to Saudi Arabia and finally came to Bahrain through Arcapita, eventually ending up as CEO of Bahrain Bay. Did you know: Not content to be a top executive in more than one field, Gagan is also an author by passion, inspired by his beloved wife. His book, 65 West 55th Street, a tale of love despite boundaries, is available at Amazon. How do you feel about Bahrain as your new home? My family and I consider Bahrain as our second home, enjoying the hospitality of both locals and expat residents. I hope I can actively help inspire Bahrain’s landscape of tomorrow. Tell us more about the pace of work in Bahrain Bay. Bahrain Bay has provided strategic growth in the area and is a magnet for new businesses and a wonderful leisure destination. Bahrain Bay 2 is in the planning phase and offers lots to look forward to. The finished development will be a mix of retail, restaurants and a promenade, with completion being 3 to 5 years away. Exciting add-on’s will be a water taxi connecting Bahrain Bay to Muharraq, Seef and the Manama cornice. Apart from the real estate development what else can we expect form Bahrain Bay? Whilst waiting for the existing construction and new phases Bahrain Bay, with the support of the BTEA, BACA and EDB, Bahrain Bay has opened its space to the public, hosting open air events that will engage and include the Island’s residents. Kick starting these events was the wonderfully interactive Sea Festival, with monthly activities planned as well as water activities during the warmer months.

Klaus Elftmann GM, Wyndham Grand Tell us more about yourself. With 51 years of experience in the hospitality industry, 10 of which was as a Chef, my first hospitality job was when I was 16 years old in Sweden (as Chef). With an extended 35 year experience as a general manager, I have worked from expedition boats to the South Pole and have served kings and queens, and several celebrities. My last assignment was to open a Hotel in Jeddah and now I’m the proud General Manager of the Wyndham Grand. Does the location make the difference or is it the brand? Location is an essential part of any business and it is indeed a great value to our property. Wyndham Grand is the flagship brand of Wyndham Hotel Group, the world’s largest hotel company, with a global portfolio of nearly 8,000 hotels in 76 countries. We aim to provide exceptional service to our guests, to match the iconic building we are in. Can you share the inspiration behind the architectural design? The Dilmun seal (made from shells) was used by traders 3000 years ago, with each trader having their own unique seal, or signature. The twisting tower was inspired by these shells. Although the seals are centuries old, they remain timeless, unique, natural and modern - just like our hotel! What is your expectation from the region as a newly opened property? We are very positive, with the increases number of inbound visitors from the Gulf region and the efforts on the Ministry of Tourism, our unique alcohol free 5* property will cater to families holidaying in Bahrain, with various suite sizes catering to families of all sizes. With spacious 1,2,3 bedroom suites our services will be tailor-made to ensure that each client can enjoy their time to the maximum. 16

Richard Raab GM, Four Seasons Bahrain Bay Why the hospitality industry, Richard? I grew up with a dream of travelling the world, largely due to staying at my grandparent’s country farm, where tourists from cruise ships would pass by. I have always been service-oriented, not knowing this would shape my future as an hotelier and bring me across the world to the Four Seasons, Bahrain Bay. My career began in the F&B side of the business and has since spanned hotels and resorts in six countries, prior to arriving in Bahrain. My diverse experience – I speak four languages – has prepared me well for leading the team at Four Seasons Hotel Bahrain Bay. What is your expectation about Bahrain and the GCC market? Bahrain’s rich history and warm hospitality is inspiring and provides the traveller with a unique experience. Following recent tourism polls, the statistics show an increase of incoming tourists to the region, with a good change of continued growth; this will obviously benefit the hospitality industry. What do you think of Bahrain Bay as the home of your hotel? Bahrain Bay is a grand location for the iconic structure of a signature brand, with access from the causeway, Central Manama, Seef – even via water taxi (coming soon)

KEEPER of the KEYS

By: Khalil Al Yaman Chef Concierge

Sherif Atef Downtown Rotana Why did you choose to be a concierge? I genuinely like helping people and interacting with guests. I am a warm, friendly, approachable person and love to multi-task. Could you tell us a time when you made a guest smile? During check out, one of our guests mentioned that there was a broken toy car in the room which could be thrown away. I could see her son was crying and very upset at losing his toy. So while she finished checking out and waited for her car, I ran to get the toy and took it to our maintenance team and asked if they

could do anything. They were brilliant and managed to fix it! The look on the little boy’s face when I handed him back his working toy was incredible and the mother was so happy she mentioned our quality of service to our management team. What do you think is the best thing about Bahrain? Bahrain is the best place for day-to-day living – Bahraini’s are open, accepting and very friendly to foreigners; it really is a multi-cultural society. There is also an ease of life – outings are fun and friends are genuine.

Stuffed Mahashi By Four Seasons Chef – Executive Chef Stefano Andreoli, Banquet Head Chef Suhaib Omar & Chef Salman Faisal Abdullah Ingredients • 8-10 zucchini (should each be 8-12” long) • 8-10 Baby eggplants (should each be 8-12” long) Tomato Broth • 2 cups peeled and diced tomatoes • 3 oz tomato paste • ½ tsp salt • ½ tsp pepper • ¼ cup fresh parsley • ¼ cup fresh coriander Zucchini/eggplant filling • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 lb raw ground meat • 1 ½ cups uncooked rice • 3 tbsp melted butter • 1 ½ tsp salt • ½ tsp pepper • 1 tsp ground allspice Must have: Sharp-tipped vegetable peeler Heavy-bottomed 5-quart pot with a cover Method Clean the zucchini and eggplant, trim off one end. Use a vegetable peeler to hollow out each piece, leaving the skin .5cm thick and one end of the vegetable intact. Tomato broth: mix all the ingredients on the list then add enough water to fill the pot to approx. 3/4. The zucchini filling: mix the ingredients, then stuff each skin with the mixture, packed down so that when turned upside down the mixture doesn’t fall out; leave a gap of ¾” at the top of each zucchini, because the rice will expand when cooking. Add the stuffed zucchini and eggplant to the tomato broth and cook with the lid on for 60-75 minutes. Once cooked, serve the vegetables garnished with fresh lemon, alongside the tomato broth if you like (you can have the tomato broth like soup). 21

Crowne Plaza Hotel’s La Mosaique Crowne Plaza Hotel’s La Mosaique restaurant is one of Bahrain’s favourites for Friday Brunch. Great food and the best ambiance –enjoy a quiet, relaxing meal at La Mosaique or head to Harvesters, for their resident live band and lively atmosphere. The buffet offers everything you could ask for – a large selection of salads, mouth-watering Italian pasta, Japanese sushi and sashimi. At the live cooking stands you’ll be able to order a steak, cooked just the way you like it, as well as perfectly prepared lobsters and prawns (my favourite dish). Once you’ve eaten your way through the huge selection of savoury options, you are then given an amazing assortment of scrumptious sweets and desserts – bye, bye New Year’s resolutions! Whether you are celebrating a special occasion or just looking for a great meal with family and friends, Crowne Plaza is a great choice for sophisticated and fun Friday Brunch.

The Gulf Hotel’s Sherlock Holmes The Gulf Hotel’s Sherlock Holmes Pub is the best English Pub in Bahrain, as simple as that! It reminds me of authentic pubs back in the UK with the interior boasting solid wood furniture, pure leather upholstery and solid rock flooring. The lighting compliments the atmosphere and the music is just perfect. And to make it all even better – Sherlock Holmes is now serving Friday Brunch. Take note that their brunch is not your typical buffet. Here you’ll order off the menu and they’ll serve your food to your table – and keep serving you as long as you can eat. Heaven! Some of the exquisite starters we enjoyed were Scotch eggs, nachos with cheese, potato skins and Caesar salad and jalapeno poppers (amazing!). Mains include Lava Grill, the softest beefsteak in town, traditional favourites such as fish and chips and bangers and mash. For vegetarians there’s rice and buttered vegetables – just outstanding. To top it all off, drinks are refillable – enough said! 26

Gastronomy

A Golden (Tulip) Experience The Golden Tulip provides a family-friendly brunch buffet with a lively atmosphere and in-house band, right in the heart of Manama. Starters feature salads, grilled vegetables, soups and Arabic classics like Baba Ghanoush and Hummus. For the mains there is locally sourced fish like hammour, safi and red snapper; plump and tasty shellfish including crayfish, crab and rock lobster from Oman - can be cooked to order and served with your choice of sauce, alongside baked or mashed potatoes. If meat is more your thing, the variety on offer is equally enticing. Succulent rib eye, local lamb chops and chicken breast, together with yogurt and spice-marinated kebabs grilled according to your taste. Two diverse international stations, Italian and Indian, offer a choice of pasta and curries that complete the variety. The dessert section is vast, featuring classics like crème brulee, cheesecake, chocolate tart, mango mousse - and fresh fruit which can be made less healthy (but absolutely delicious) by dipping it in the chocolate fountain.

Sheraton Hotel Bahrain Soothe Your Soul with Sheraton Hotel Bahrain’s Chocoholic Brunch The creative process of delivering a memorable brunch requires skills, intuition and artistic vision. For centuries, chocolate has been known to soothe the soul. Chocolate connoisseurs will agree that overall Sheraton Hotel Bahrain’s Chocoholic Brunch is a delightful journey of the five senses. It is no surprise that from the ‘Chocoholic Brunch’ experience, it will point you to two distinct characteristics: taste and quality! From the live cooking station at the heart of the spread, sushi bar, diverse array of meat, fish, vegetable dishes and of course the variety of chocolate and chocolateinspired desserts will entice all kinds of taste buds. The overflowing choices of beverages and selection of alcoholic drinks do not disappoint either. The live entertainment keeps up the ante and provides the atmosphere of enjoyment from young children to adults. It is evident that a Friday visit to Sheraton Hotel Bahrain’s Chocoholic Brunch must be in your list when in Bahrain. 27

Gastronomy

Bahrain Bay Kitchen Saturday Arabic Brunch Mouth-watering scents entice the guest to descend the very grand staircase and enter the majestic ambiance of the restaurant. You’ll be guided by the traditional Arabic music playing in the background and your eyes will feast on the dazzling display of delicacies laid out in tempting fashion. All the dishes you’d expect to find in a truly Bahrain kitchen are featured in the buffet, with many other dishes from the Middle East region, including modern fusion offerings, providing a fantastic representation of the best of Arabic food. Service is fit for a king and with the mild weather blessing our Island, the outdoor seating is a must – especially if you want to try the hookah (traditional or electric). A favourite with Arab diners, it’s a secret that won’t be kept long and the expat community is going to love this vibrant gastronomical experience.

The Mövenpick Hotel in Bahrain The Mövenpick Hotel in Bahrain is justifiably famous for its Friday Brunch. Brunch has taken over the entire lobby level of the hotel, with a live band set up in the lobby itself. Here you’ll also find the desserts, the Curry Station and the Pasta live cooking. In the smaller side room is the Sushi table, with a chef on standby for any special orders, and the Carvery – where you’ll be able to pile your plate high with your favourite roast meats. Silks, the main restaurant, boasts salads (at least 20 different dishes), cheeses and seafood such as prawns, crayfish, oysters and mussels. There’s also your choice of fresh fish prepared just the way you want it, with stir fried vegetables or just grilled. But back to the desserts! There’s a fruit table, chocolate fountain, ice cream stand, dessert island… the choice is endless. You’re more than welcome to bring the kids as they’ll be entertained by face-painting, cotton candy and a clown who wonders around making balloon animals (for young and old…). And if the weather’s warm, you can pop outside and use the swimming pool. With wonderfully fresh ingredients and such a vast array of choices, it’s no wonder that The Mövenpick continues to be one of the best choices for Bahrain’s Friday Brunch.

at Bahrain International Circuit

Don’t be fooled into thinking Bahrain’s (mostly flat) landscape isn’t up to the challenge of a 4x4 adventure…buckle up for a breath-taking adventure! The clever and creative people at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) have created The Land Rover Experience Centre, a track which will definitely get your heart beating a whole lot faster! To name a few of the obstacle are the following; 45% slopes and a section called the ‘camel back’ obstacle, there’s something for everyone – a total of 32 challenges, natural and manmade, with the course either you take the driver or passenger seat will take an approximate of 45 minutes to complete. You’ll be given either a Land Rover or Range Rover, both tailor-made for such extreme driving, with all mentioned obstacles and you will be accompanied by a skilled, certified trainer, who will talk you through

30

each section. Steep climbs and drops, accelerated turns including a speedy sand slide proving you’re in the middle east, it’s all there. (Editor: our driver, Mr. Mohamed Al Shareeda, had to suggest that opening my eyes would help!) Taking the opportunity to find out a bit more about the Experience, I asked Mohamed a few questions. What is the difference between what you offer and other off-road experiences? The Land Rover Experience Centre at BIC is the only one of its kind in the entire MENA region. It offers a Passenger Experience and a Driving Experience. What sets it apart from other off-road experiences are the exceptional fleet of vehicles that are used by the centre over the unique course all technologically engineered

to serve the off-road challenges with fun and safety experience. Drivers are very fluent in two languages (Arabic & English) making all the guest fully understand details of the ride. Tell us a little more about the cars you use. We currently have eight vehicles in our fleet - three Land Rover Discovery LR4s, two Land Rover Discovery Sports, two Range Rover Evoques, and one Range Rover Sport Supercharge. What qualification do you get if you complete the course? The Land Rover Experience Centre at the BIC is a fun challenge for all off-road fanatics rather than called as an academy and as such will only provide each participant with a completion certificate, acknowledging that they have taken part.

Gaye Bentham Nationality: British Length of Stay in Bahrain: over 30 years

What inspired you to become an artist? 8 years ago and my first subject was a monk in Cambodia I think everyone has a bit of the artist in them - creativity and self-expression sometimes become submerged under the weight of daily life but once you’re free to spend the time, it is amazing how quickly the artist emerges! I was interested in all forms of art from an early age and used to dabble in sketching and writing. But it wasn’t until I retired from my full-time job that I had the chance to explore my creativity and learn the art of photography seriously, and to follow my dream of becoming a photographer, albeit as a hobbyist.

What camera do you use? I have a Canon DSLR, a plethora of lenses (most of which I never use!) and I post process my images using a variety of software. Who is your favorite artist or artwork? I have always been a huge fan of Salvador Dali, and the surrealist artists - mainly because on a school trip to the Tate Gallery in London, I first set eyes on The Metamorphosis of Narcissus by Dali. I was so captivated by it that I had to be dragged away. Photographically speaking, I admire the work of Steve McCurry and Rarindra Prakarsa; however, I belong to the National Geographic Your Shot community of photographers and I have been inspired by so many of them. There is a LOT of good stuff out there. 38

What does Bahrain contribute to your work? Bahrain has some very interesting subjects for photography – notably: the beautiful architecture of the heritage houses, even the modern architecture (the National Theatre being a prime example), the street life in the older sections of Manama and Muharraq and some of the traditions like falconry that are still practiced.

WALK TOUR

1. Start at Al Fateh Grand Mosque – enjoy the free tour by the very friendly volunteers, which takes about 15-20 minutes (a little longer if you want to view their collection of Qurans). Wonderful interior that can hold 7,000 worshippers. Note: Please remember to dress appropriately: clothing should cover the knees and long-sleeved tops should be worn (although outer wear is provided at the Mosque.

3. National Museum - allow at least an hour to enjoy the exhibits which highlight Bahrain’s very long and distinguished history. If you have more free time, take the boat ride from the Museum to Bu Maher fort in Muharraq and see part of the Island’s historic Pearl Route firsthand.

2. Next head along the Manama Corniche – a public area for picnicking families and rollerblading youngsters, popular during the weekends as it features Fun Land (bowling and ice-skating).

4. Right alongside the Museum is the National Theatre, a relatively new landmark whose beautiful design is a must see. A 1000 seat auditorium stretching over 11,000 square metres.

16 June, 2016 What surprised you about moving to Bahrain? We were surprised by all the luxuries here – massive villas with private pools, modernized flats with amenities such as housekeeping; exotic cars. Customer service is also great here in Bahrain - hotels, restaurants and even the service stations have friendly customer service and warm hospitality. But one thing we can’t go without mentioning – the way people drive! It’s in your best interest to be as alert as possible when on the road. What are your favourite places and things to do in Bahrain? Weekend brunches are really fun as well – one of our favourites is the Movenpick. If you could pick one quote or piece of advice to newcomers to Bahrain, what would that be? Find and make friends, and allow those people to become your family away from home. Learn more about the culture here.

Arrival in Bahrain (Date): What are your favourite things to do in Bahrain? As a family, we enjoy the culinary diversity of the Island. Brunch, dinner we can say no excuse not to dine out. It is a privilege to be working for the same company. We always get excited preparing for the festive seasons - Ramadan, Eid and Christmas. Top places to go: Movenpick, Sheraton. Gulf Hotel. Al Abraj and Adliya for family entertainment . How can you describe Bahrain? Bahrain is our adopted home all our kids grew up here. Very safe. Warm from the people to the weather. We’re here almost 30 years and we both can say Bahrain is our home sweet home.
