Publisher’s Note

We’ve survived another summer – I think we all deserve a round of applause! Marhaba fil Bahrain’s team loves our Island home, but it’s always great to get independent confirmation, and 2017 saw Bahrain ranked as the top destination for Expats. What a wonderful affirmation of the hospitality, warmth and kind spirit of this Island nation. The final quarter of the year is a time when the heat finally leaves the Island, and the weather becomes perfect for outdoor activities. Not only do migratory birds flock to our shores, but herds of Dugong return to the seas around Hawar Island with their young – a magnificent sight to see.

With Sports Tourism going from strength to strength, this November sees IRONMAN 70.3 Middle East Championship being hosted by Bahrain, under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Not only is Bahrain offering all Bahraini citizens a 50% discount when participating in this event. But in a very significant act of generosity, the Nasser Bin Hamad Foundation which aspires to inspire the sporting youth of the Kingdom is offering a few lucky Bahraini nationals wishing to compete in the IRONMAN event complete sponsorships (see below for details). Also in November sees His Highness Shaikh Khalid Bin Hamad Al Khalifa proudly give his support to the upcoming BRAVE International Combat week, when the world’s best MMA contenders come to the Island to battle it out. Health and wellness is apparently an integral part of the sporting life, and in this edition Marhaba fil Bahrain features interviews with some of the Kingdom’s best Yogis. Learn more about what inspired them to take up and then teach yoga, and perhaps you’ll catch the yoga bug too. We’ll also let you know the top Ayurvedic destinations in India and will be reviewing several spas on the Island (it’s a hard life, but someone’s got to do it.) Bahrain will be celebrating its 46th National Day in December, so look out for lots of celebrations. And to celebrate all things Bahraini, Marhaba fil Bahrain will be featuring local talents (look out for hot new band Rooftop), as well as cultural events taking place this quarter. So join me in venturing outside after the long, hot summer - I look forward to seeing you out and about, enjoying the best of what Bahrain has to offer.

Bahrain History numerous settlements throughout the millennia can now be seen in the rich archaeological sites around the Island. The springs also encouraged the most lustrous of pearls – the trade which helped build the Island’s early fortunes.

Stories passed on from the time of the Sumerians mentioned a settlement in the deserts of the Middle East - an oasis of life flowing with sweet water springs. It has been suggested that the legendary verdant island may have been the inspiration for the Garden of Eden, described as “Paradise” in the world’s oldest poetic saga - The Epic of Gilgamesh. “The Sacred Land” or the “Land of Eternal Life”, previously known as ‘Dilmun’, is now known as the Kingdom of Bahrain. Early explorers also knew Bahrain as the “Island of a million palm trees”. At least twenty-three varieties of dates were grown on the Island and the leaves, branches, buds and flowers of the date palm were all used extensively. As a result of this bounty, Bahrain had its first natural export. Only Bahrain can claim a truly integral connection with the sweet-water springs that bubble off-shore, water which first attracted explorers over 2000 years ago. The 8

Despite modernization and a cosmopolitan outlook, Bahrain is a unique land with fascinating culture that spans many centuries. A sense of history is tangible even today when you explore the Island’s imposing forts and atmospheric streets, or stroll through its bustling market areas and admire its many magnificent examples of Islamic architecture. While you explore, you are sure to come across another of Bahrain’s most traditional and attractive characteristics – its people, who are among the most welcoming, easy going, friendly and courteous you will meet anywhere in the Arabian Gulf. Yoga

Yoga is a word derived from the Sanskrit word yuj and means to unite, to connect. It has become a practice that allows one to unite the mind, body and spirit in calmness. It has also come to mean a connection or union with a higher being.

There are five main principle meanings in yoga, these being: 1. A disciplined method for attaining a goal 2. A technique of controlling the body and the mind 3. One of the schools or systems of philosophy (darśana) 4. Used in conjunction with words such as “hatha-, mantra- and laya-“, it refers to particular techniques of yoga 5. The goal of Yoga practice

26

On December 1, 2016 Yoga was given the honour of being listed by UNESCO as an ‘intangible cultural heritage.’ Marhaba fil Bahrain got in touch with The Island’s finest Yogis to find out more. Jennifer Haunani Chong Drake began practicing yoga in 2002 as a way to find calmness in her busy life and soon took her love for the practice a step further, training to be a Yogi. Not only is Jennifer a Yogi, she is also qualified in Ayurveda, Hawaiian healing, SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) Yoga and has a Master’s Degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine, as well as being a licensed Acupuncturist.

Jennifer’s favourite Yoga teaching is that of Mindful breathing, which she says “keeps alive spirituality”, as well as SUP Yoga which reminds her to keep her centre balanced at all times. “Yoga does not have an age qualification – you can start the path to Yoga any time you find it, or need it, on your life path.” MiB asked Jennifer how Yoga had enriched her life. “I believe that holistic wellness is essential to compensate Western medicine. Yoga is a spiritual path where I find a deeper connection with me. Holistic wellness fuels me - it is my passion. “

A vast changing room led to areas where you could enjoy a jacuzzi, steam room, gym – even a salt inhalation room! And for those who are truly looking for the next big thing – Anti-Gravity Yoga... The treatments were superb, with our therapists ensuring that the lighting, scents, oils and pressure were just what we wanted. As we lay in the 30

The Gulf Spa 3,100 sq. meter area

Gulf Hotel Bahrain

Opened March 2016

“Escape to a serene oasis in the heart of the city.” With the heat adding to the stress of work, it was a pleasant surprise that in the heart of a bustling city, lies a spa that really does make you feel as if you’ve left the ‘real world’ behind. Given a chance for some ‘bro-time’ that didn’t involve billiards or darts, we opted for a traditional hammam. A very professional and welcoming reception ensured that we provided the therapists with our personal preferences, and were amazed at the amenities we could enjoy before our treatment started – jacuzzi, hydro and relaxation pool, a steam room that took our breath away and finally the ice bath, which neither of us were brave enough to try. The room was very cozy, with soft music and soft lighting helping to create an ambience so relaxing that my friend and I both fell asleep halfway through the treatment. My therapist was very attentive and made sure that the pressure was correct for me. After 60 minutes of pampering, we were guided to a rest area where we were given the option of 3 traditional teas, where we could chat in a stress-free environment. 32

Leisure

But our special treatment didn’t end there; with the Gulf Hotel known for it’s culinary excellence, we were offered a “hearty-healthy meal”. Mixed salad with grilled salmon, rich in omega 3, as well as a glass of fresh watermelon juice. What more could you ask for? Highlights: • Three floors housing the health and wellness facility • Separate men’sa & ladies treatmentreas • Hammam • Indoor Hydro pool • Ice Bath • Rooftop relaxation terrace • Juice Bar

ROOFTOP! Marhaba fil Bahrain (MfB) has been keeping a look out for great local talent in Bahrain, and we’re very excited about a band that’s just released their debut album. We sat down with the guys to find out what their story is. Rooftop, formed in 2013 and immediately started writing original material; they soon realised they were on to something good and a couple of years ago decided to take

their unique sound into the studio, culminating in the release of their first album, Seven. Describing the group’s genre as Modern Rock, their sound fuses Blues, Jazz, Reggae, Pop and Rock, with main influences being some of the all-time great bands such as U2, The Cure and The Police. MfB: So, let’s get the introductions going… Who are you and how did you form the band?

Rooftop: We are the 3 core band members – Ehab, Ali and Abdulla. Two of us, Ehab and Ali, have been friends for 30 years and we met Abdulla in 2011. We clicked right away – we’re all tremendously passionate about music, work well creatively together and we agreed that we wanted to make our own sound. MfB: How did you come up with the name of your band? Rooftop: It’s actually the nickname for our home studio where we jam and begin the creative process; the name stuck and we decided to keep it as the band name, as an homage to our HQ. MfB: When did your love of music begin? Rooftop: Ehab started playing guitar at 13, Ali first picked up a bass at 15 and Abdulla began drumming when he was 14.

34

Spotlight

MfB: What are your roles in the band? Rooftop: Ehab is the guitarist, a virtuoso and “true tone chaser”, a great melodist and the main push behind the band’s song writing. Consistently pursuing his own musical interests or as a session musician for other artists. Ali is on bass - self-taught, he’s been part of numerous hard rock and progressive rock bands since the mid-eighties; everything he listens to contributes to his musical development. Abdulla, with a Master’s degree in Music Industry Studies, has gone on to perform with countless bands both locally and internationally.

Still actively working in the music industry, the latest has been with Bahrain’s largest importer and retailer of musical instruments and supplies. All three members of the group have performed in various overseas countries; this experience and their diverse musical influences are evident in Seven. MfB: What is Seven’s anthem song? Rooftop: The first single on our album is also the opening track entitled ‘Scared Like a Hero’. It’s a solid, rocking tune with an addictive

hook! You can see our first single on our YouTube channel and currently we’re working on our first official music video, which will be out soon! MfB: How do you source your vocals? Rooftop: Once we were certain of our sound, we were then on the lookout for a voice that would match. We finally met James, who had the range, style and creative outlook that the group was looking for. The band also enlisted the help of other musicians along the way, including Nader (keyboards), Noriel (Harmonica), and backing vocalists Safiya, Vahid and Susan. MfB: Any messages for aspiring young musicians? Rooftop: Be true to yourself. Push yourselves to reach your full creative potential but have fun expressing your music. Always remember nothing great comes easy. For more info on the band check out their website: www.rooftop.band 35

Interview with the Indonesian Ambassador to Bahrain Marhaba fil Bahrain is honored to sit down with His Excellency Nur Syahrir Rahardjo, Indonesian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain to discuss his recent appointment to the Kingdom, his favorite destinations in Indonesia and his personal message to MfB readers. MfB: Your Excellency, what are your first impressions of Bahrain and how similar is it to your home country of Indonesia. H.E. Rahardjo: I actually have prior experience with Bahrain. My first assignment (1989 – 1992) was in the Indonesian Embassy in Kuwait, which also covered Bahrain so I visited the Island several times. Bahrain’s scenery is now completely different from my previous assignment, but the Bahraini people have stayed the same –the same warmth, politeness and humble nature. MfB: What activities could Bahraini’s or expats enjoy in Indonesia?

His Excellency Nur Syahrir Rahardjo Indonesian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain

H.E. Rahardjo: There are an enormous amount of activities. As an archipelagic country that spans almost 5,120 km along the equator, divided into 34 provinces with its own cultures and traditions, you can imagine that Indonesia offers an abundant amount of cultural and historical heritage, breathtaking views, unique natural landscapes and challenging adventure destinations. Indonesia also offers many modern tourism attractions such as amusement parks and shopping malls. Therefore, I can assure anyone coming from Bahrain that there are destinations that will be suitable based on each individual’s travel preference. MfB: When is the perfect season to visit Indonesia? H.E. Rahardjo: As a tropical country, I would say you can visit Indonesia at any time of the year. The climate is relatively stable, with an average temperature range between 15 and 33 degrees Celsius, depending on location. If you don’t the like crowds, my suggestion is to avoid the holiday season which usually occurs between December toFebruary and June to August.

42

Spotlight

MfB: What are your recommended top 5 tourist attractions in Indonesia? H.E. Rahardjo: The most famous destination is Bali, dubbed “one of the islands to visit before you die.” Other destinations are purely dependent on your personal interests. For those who love marine activities, I suggest a visit to Raja Ampat in Papua and Derawan in East Kalimantan. For jungle adventurers, Tanjung Putting National Park in Central Kalimantan or Gunung Leuser National Park in Aceh. For people who love wildlife, I am sure that the Komodo Islands National Park in East Nusa Tenggar with its beautiful, one-of-a-kind pink beach must be on anyone’s list when visiting Indonesia. In terms of historical heritage, my suggestion is to visit Yogyakarta, which is where I am originally from. The historical sites include Borobudur Temple, the biggest single Buddhist monument in South East Asia; Prambanan Temple, a Hindu temple and also a

Raja Ampat in Papua and Derawan in East Kalimantan

Sultan’s Palace, located adjacent to Tamansari Park. For those who prefer not to take a domestic flight after the long–haul flight from Bahrain, they may choose to stay in Jakarta to enjoy the vibrant city and nearby Puncak Resort with its Arabic village. For the outdoor adventurers such

as volcano and mountain lovers, Mount Bromo is a must-see, offering magnificent sunrises. MfB: Your Excellency, what is your message to our readers who are thinking of visiting Indonesia? H.E. Rahardjo: Indonesia offers a very diverse list of attractions that will satisfy your choices of how to spend your leisure time –whether you like to enjoy the natural scenery or try a challenging adventure, there is always something for everyone. For those who love sports – there is golf or surfing. For the health and wellness enthusiasts, there are a very good range of services to choose from, like the popular spa therapies. With the new immigration policies, people from Bahrain and citizens of 168 other countries no longer require a visa, as long as their visit is less than 30 days and for the primary purpose of tourism and leisure. In closing, I would like to invite both Bahrainis and expats currently living in Bahrain to come and visit - and truly experience Indonesia.

Taking a bite out of the Big Apple New York. 5 days. Possible? Marhaba fil Bahrain ventured out into the wilds of the big city to see what you could cram into a week’s holiday. Day 1: Jet lag – ugh! Best way to get over it is to walk it out. So head down 5th Avenue, window shop to your heart’s delight (easier on your wallet!), appreciate the incredible St. Patrick’s Cathedral and end up at the top of the Empire State Building. Such a great way to start your holiday, by having an eagle’s eye view of the island of Manhattan; but the view isn’t the only thing you come away with. Remember to admire the interior of the building itself its Art Deco décor is absolutely stunning. Next, head over to Macy’s for an amazing sandwich at Rowland’s Bar & Grill (their onion bread is to die for), then wander around the famous department store. Final stop? The New York Public Library – an incredibly beautiful building with some amazing book collections, a true slice of history. Day 2: Head to the water. A boat ride on the Hudson will give you an alternate, but equally stunning view, of Manhattan’s skyline. Relax onboard one of the pleasure cruisers, whilst listening to the narrative provided by the tour guides and learn so much about the buildings hugging the shoreline. And then there

she is, the most famous woman in the world – the Statue of Liberty. You can either choose to dock for a closer look, even climb up all those stairs (354) in order to get yet another bird’s eye view of New York. Why not pop over to Ellis Island and learn about the fascinating history of immigration into the USA? Once you’re back on dry land, make sure to visit the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, a battleship turned into a living museum with fascinating displays. If you’re over that jet lag, then take a walk up to Times Square as the sun goes down, and watch all of those movie-famous neon signs light up. Day 3: Escape NY. Take a day trip to Washington, D.C. and visit some of the most famous sites on the East coast. On the way, stop to see The Pentagon and Arlington Cemetery, an incredibly moving final resting place for America’s fallen military. Next stop is the National Mall, which is bordered on one end by the Lincoln Memorial, a huge tribute to the 16th President; Martin Luther King made his famous “I have a Dream” speech from its steps. It also provides an incredible viewpoint to look the Mall and see the

An impressive building which houses the current President of the United States, it is also bordered by beautiful parkland. If you have any time to spare, try to visit the area around the Capitol Building as it’s home to some of the world’s best museums – the Smithsonian Institute, Air & Space Museum, National Museum of Natural History, National Museum of the American Indian.

Day 4: Take a walk in the park – Central Park. New York is a city made for walking, and Central Park and its surrounds are fantastic! Bordering the park on the west is the Natural History Museum, which is heaps of fun. Then stroll right across the gorgeously lush Park, marveling at the theatres, running tracks, dog parks and flower displays. Once you’re on the East side, pop into the Metropolitan Museum of Art and feed your imagination. If you’ve not had enough, save the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum – the Guggenheim is justifiably famous for its quirky building and its incredible collection of modern art. The Lincoln Memorial and the reflecting pool

Day 5: Find a traditional NY diner and have breakfast – their portions are huge and it will set you up for the rest of the day. Next, take a walk down to the Radio City Music Hall and learn a little more about the city’s entertainment history. How about a stop at The Algonquin hotel, where you can see the Round Table, where the famous literary writers/ critics gathered, calling themselves “The Vicious Circle” – think Dorothy Parker, Harpo Marx and Alexander Woollcott. Finally, why not visit Top of the Rock viewing platform, in the Rockefeller Centre. Here you’ll get another incredible view of the city, with Central Park right at your feet – a perfect way to say goodbye to one of the most exciting cities in the world. Arlington Cemetery

Home Away From Home By Rosette M. Obedoza

A Fair Lady in Bahrain

How time flies! One and a half years have gone by and here I am writing my last article for “Home Away from Home.” As my time in the Kingdom draws to an end, I can only tell you how much I enjoying meeting and interviewing the wonderful people on the Island.

tailors that could create anything. My mother reminded me of all the garment sketches I had made as a child and I thought “could this really be my opportunity to share my dreams.” During 2003 I created three fashion lines. Although my tour of duty was finished, I promised myself that I would return to the Island – my wonderful husband first proposed to me in Bahrain and I even designed my own wedding dress there. I returned to the States and began showing my fashion line in shows, and was invited to attend New York Fashion Week. My mission with Lady Fair Fashion is to help men and women accessorize their inner beauty with extraordinary garments, reflecting on the outside what is inside. Coco Chanel once said “Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside” and this is the inspiration for Lady Fair Fashion. Now, after 7 years, I am returning with my husband and two girls, and how to share my love of fashion with the beautiful people of Bahrain.

Full name:

Ebon’e Me’Shawn Fair Nationality: American Rosette: How did you get involved in fashion design, and how did you come to Bahrain? Ebon’e: As a little girl I made sketches of beautiful garments, with Barbies as my models for these designs. I never gave up on that wish, but I later joined the military and was stationed in Bahrain in 2003, putting fashion on the back burner for a while. As I began exploring Bahrain, I discovered the souk and a spark was reignited within me. I then learned about the different types of tailors and I was excited all over again falling in love with many prints, fabrics and accessories. I called my mother and told her about the beautiful treasures I had found in the souks and how there were 72
