COURTYARD LIVING Type: Mix-use housing Location: West Melbourne, Australia Year: 2019 | Semester 1 Studio Leader: Rob Nerlich & Kate McMahon mcmahon and nerlich architects PROJECT DESCRIPTION It is a multi-functional apartment building using structural CLT timber. It provides different apartment typologies and communal areas for both residents, workers and visitors. Three courtyards carve into the mass building. The central courtyard or spaces for the community aim to provide gathering spots surrounded by greenery. This becomes the heart of the building, where all residents, visitors and community meet each other across different hours of the day. Light as the basic feature of courtyards is also achieved through this courtyard typology.
