TAO HOTEL COMMUNITY Type: Hospitality and housing Location: Melbourne, Australia Year: 2020 | Semester 1 Studio Leader: Mark Healy Six Degrees Architects PROJECT BRIEF A hotel for VISITORS to live and experience the local COMMUNITY TAO aims to redefine the role of hotels in Melbourne city by addressing local community housing demand. A hotel that provides exclusive temporary accommodation for tourists and integrates permanent accommodation for couples and small families in the Hoddle Grid. Envisioning this new hybrid model, the design offers genuine moments of local community by merging hospitality, housing and shared spaces to create engagement opportunities between visitors and residents throughout the building program. The site has an area of 1256 sqm, it is located at the edge of the Hoddle Grid. Towards the south, railways, Enterprise Park, Yarra River and the southern part of Melbourne provide an opportunity for city views.

HEALING PASSAGE Type: Emergency housing Location: Flemington, Australia Year: 2019 | Semester 2 Studio Leader: Jim Stewart & Katie Skillington Fender Katsalidis Architects PROJECT BRIEF HEALING PASSAGE aims to provide emergency accommodation for young single females and single parent families. It will become a healing journey for women that are transitioning from a social, economic or mental health issue. In order to provide a healing, safe and relaxing environment for the residents, biophilic design elements such as greenery and water are implemented, also a variety of communal areas intend to promote social interaction among the residents.

COURTYARD LIVING Type: Mix-use housing Location: West Melbourne, Australia Year: 2019 | Semester 1 Studio Leader: Rob Nerlich & Kate McMahon mcmahon and nerlich architects PROJECT DESCRIPTION It is a multi-functional apartment building using structural CLT timber. It provides different apartment typologies and communal areas for both residents, workers and visitors. Three courtyards carve into the mass building. The central courtyard or spaces for the community aim to provide gathering spots surrounded by greenery. This becomes the heart of the building, where all residents, visitors and community meet each other across different hours of the day. Light as the basic feature of courtyards is also achieved through this courtyard typology.
