To the reader This magazine was created to understand a little bit more about what are the different educational approaches that a class of second language learning can have, with some activities that help us teach the students in a fun and entertaining way. It covers various age ranges, and they can help to teach vocabulary, grammar, writing skill, reading skills, memorizing skills and others. The name of the approaches cover in this work are: The oral approach, audiolingual method, total physical response, community language learning, suggestopedia whole language, multiple intelligence, neuro linguistic programming, the lexical approach, competency based language teaching, communicative language teaching, the natural approach, cooperative language learning, content based instruction and task based instruction. The materials needed for each activity will be given in the description of the activity or in the page next to the activity description. I hope you enjoy it!

Total Physical Response Activity Age range: Between 6-8 years old. 1. Show the students the 5 flashcarts with the vocabulary about hygiene.

Brushing my teeth. Combing my hair. Washing my hands. Taking a shower. 2. The students and the teacher recreate and say out loud the actions that are in the flashcards a lot of times. 3. Then the students have to listen to a tape that says the same actions and put the numbers from 1 to 4 on a paper, in the order that the actionare being said.

Community language Learning activity

Age range: Between 8-10 years old. 1. Start by telling the students to make a circle so they can be comfortable and they have to stay in silence for a while. 2. After that, the students have to make pairs. 3. Give them the dialogue in the next page so they can repeat it a lot of times. 4. In groups, the students have to make a new dialogue based on the dialogue they read before. 5. Check the grammar and the vocabulary that the students used. 6. In groups, students have to make a roleplay with the dialogue they did.

Dialogue A: Hello, may I speak to Alice please? B: This is she. How's it going? A: I've been trying to call you all day. B: Sorry about that. I was cleaning up. A: It's okay. B: So what were you calling me about? A: Oh, I just wanted to see if you wanted to hang out tomorrow. B: Sure, what did you want to do? A: Maybe we can go see a movie or something. B: That sounds like fun. Let's do it. A: I'll see you tomorrow then. B: See you then. Goodbye.

Suggestopedia activity Age range: Between 8-10 years old. 1. First, accommodate the students in a way that they feel comfortable while they listen to classical music and relax. 2. The teacher reads the dialogue about adjectives (that is on the next page) with the classical music in the background. 3. The 4 time when the teacher is reading it, the teacher has to give the students some flashcards with the adjectives in the dialogue. 4. Then when the teacher reads it for the 5 time, the teacher has to make pauses where the adjectives are, and let the students choose the flashcard that fills that space 5. Then in groups of four the students have to make a dialogue with adjectives.

Dialogue A: Have you seen the new girl in school? B: No, I haven't. A: She's really pretty. B: Describe her to me. A: She's short. B: Well, how tall is she? A: She's about five feet even. B: What does she look like, though? A: She has pretty light brown eyes.

whole language activity Age range: Between 8-10 years old. 1. The teachers reads text with the image in the next page to all the kids. 2.The students have to answer the next questions and discuss it with other students: What is Hank? Where he lives? How is the horse called? Which color is Hank’s horse? What Ginger loves to eat?

text Hank is a cowboy. He lives on a farm. He has a horse named Ginger. Hank loves Ginger. He rides Ginger every day. Sometimes they walk slowly, and sometimes they run fast. They always have a good time. Ginger is Hank's horse. She is light brown. Her tail and mane are dark brown. She is three years old. She lives in the stable by the house. Ginger waits for Hank every morning. She enjoys their time together. Often, Hank gives her apples. After long rides, Hank always washes and brushes Ginger. He usually brushes her tail. Then he gives her food and fresh water. Ginger loves Hank.

Multiple Intelligence activity Age range: Between 5-7 years old. Intelligence: Spatial 1. Every kid brings plasticine jars of different colors. 2. The teacher has two jars fill with papers: one of them it’s fill with papers of different colors and the other one is fill with papers that have the name of different animals. 3. The teacher randomly choose one of each jar and tells the students to mold it. For example: Red rabbit, blue cat, yellow elephant, green bear...

Neurolinguistic programming activity Age range: Between 12-15 years old.

1. The student will listen and watch a video called “Costa Rica Elevated�. 2. The students, in groups of four, will make 3 sentences in simple past, 3 sentences in simple present and 3 sentences in simple future about the nature in Costa Rica. 3. Then one group of students ask to other group ofstudents about their sentences.

The lexical approach activity

Age range: Between 6-8 years old. 1. Students watch the next video about the different parts of the house. 2. The students have to repeat and practice the next vocabulary: bathroom, bedroom, dining room, kitchen, living room and study room . 3. Then the teacher gives the chart in the next page to each student, so they can fill the space with the name of the correspondent place of the house. 4. Then the students ad the vocabulary to their vocabulary log.

Competency based language teaching activity Age range: Between 12-15 years old. Vocabulary: Hospital. 1. The students make pairs. 2. One of the students is the doctor and the other one is the patient. 3. They have to make a dialogue, one of the students is a patient and has to invent the symptoms that he or she has and the other student has to give them a diagnosis and a prescription. 4. At the end they have to do a presentation.

Communicative Language Teaching activity Age range: Between 12-15 years old. 1. The students will make groups of three. 2. Like in a show, one student will be the interviewer and the other two will be the special guests. 3. The student that it’s the interviewer has to create the questions. Five questions are about the favorite place of the first guess and then another five about the other student’s family. 4. The other students, according to the questions, have to prepare their answers. 5. Finally, the students have to make a roleplay like in a show, where they ask and answer questions.

the natural approach activity

Age range: Between 5-7 years old. 1. The teacher brings the a short video called “old macdonald had a farm�. 2. The students learn the animals from memory because of the sounds. 3. The teacher puts images of different animals around the classroom. 4. The students have to point to the animal that the teacher says. 5. Then, the teacher puts the sound of the animals and the students that feel ready to anwser have to identificate which animal is.

cooperative language learning activity Age range: Between 13-16 years old. 1. Make pairs and make sure that in each pair there is one good reader (student A)and good writer(student B). 2. Give them the next question: Why you guys think education is important?, so they can create a essay of 4 paragraphs. 3. In pairs, Student A explains the ideas he wants to put in the essay to Student B, so he or she can write it in a good way. Each student creates two paragraphs individually and then they put it together. 4. When the essay is done, student A helps Student B with the words he finds difficult to pronounce that are written in the essay. 5. Finally, the two students have to read in front of the class their essay.

task based instruction activity

Age range: Between 12-15 years old. 1. Pre task: The teacher explain the topic about the environment and structure like simple past, present and future. 2. The teacher explains to the students that in groups of 4, they have to create a campaign about the different ways people can help the environment. They have to prepare a poster with recyclable materials they found at home or in their neighborhood. 3. Task: The next day, the students have an hour to create a poster with the different materials they have. 4. Planning: The students have another hour to create an oral report about how they used and found the materials and also the information that they recollected about how to help the environment. 5. Report: The group of students present their campaign and their oral report. 6. Practice: Depending on their presentation, the teahcer selects what they need to practice.

content based instruction activity Age range: Between 9-11 years old. Topic: planets 1. Students make 8 groups. 2. Each of them will get a paper that says the position and information about the planet. 3. Each group has to make a poster that has information about the planet. 4. Then each student's receives a worksheet that has the nine planets and they have to fill it with the information they learned.

Audiolingual method activity Age range: Between 7-9 years old. 1. Students make the worksheet about homophones. 2. When they finish, the teacher will say the correct answer. 4. Finally, the students will repeat the words so they can differentiate one of the other.

The oral approach activity Age range: Between 7-10 years old. Theme: demonstrative pronouns and items of clothes. 1. Students will bring to class different kinds of clothes items. 2. The teacher will teach the vocabulary about clothes and demonstrative nouns. 3. Then one student will come to the front and use a demonstrative noun and tell the items of clothes. For example: This is a t shirt, those are shoes, that is a hat.
