When I am eighteen Before reading. Answer the following questions. 1. What would you like to do when you finish school?

2. Would you like to live abroad for some time? How long? Where? Why?

3. What job would you like to do in the future?

While reading. Read the text and answer the questions below.

When I’m eighteen I’m going to leave school and take a year off before I decide what to do in the future. I want to travel and to get some experience of living in different cultures. I’ll need some money though – if I get a part-time job, I’ll be able to earn enough to buy my round-theworld ticket. My grandparents are very generous and they’ve offered to give me some spending money.

My friend Will wants to come with me. He’s really nice, but I’m a bit worried about spending such a lot of time with the same person. Hopefully, we’ll find time to do our own things. He’s very keen on mountain biking and water sports, while I prefer reading and learning about ancient buildings.

My parents are quite nervous about the whole thing. I’m their youngest child and I’ve never been away from home for more than a couple of

nights. I’m sure they’ll be fine. They are happy for me, and are pleased that I want to do something different.

When I get back I’ll apply for a job or a place at university to study archaeology. I think I need to take the year out to see what I really want from life.

1

What does Archie want to do when he leaves school?

2

What will he do to earn money for his ticket?

3

4

How do Archie’s parents feel?

5
