Proposed project: Urban Activator. Development period: 4 weeks. The purpose of the assignment was to discover the particular qualities of a specific place in San Jose, Costa Rica, using the observation to perceive the atmosphere of the spot. The intuitive exploration was required by feeling and listening the context, discovering hidden details and seeing beyond the obvious. A problem should have been find based on the analysis. The proposed solution for the problematic, had to be of a small scale (50 m2 max), spatial and tangible. It had to consider the human ergonomic and anthropomorphic and most important: impact the dynamic of the place.

Based on the analysis and studies made in the “Plaza de la Cultura” (Culture Plaza, as it’s named in Costa Rica) a problem was found in the disassociation in between the plaza and the Central Bank´s Museum of the country, commonly known as the Gold Museum. That contributes to the lack of people that concentrate in the specific spot were these two places connect. This is the reason why this specific zone is selected for the intervention, breaking the perception of the -now existing- border, to unify these two places with a created space, formed from serial planes that integrate the ergonomic in its design, providing the people a confortable spot to be in.

1 Exploration with serial planes along the border to provide continuity to the physical limit in between the two levels.
Planes are extended horizontally, modifying the length of each element in a manner that the border seems to fade away.

To provide unification, a same size is given to all the planes, changing the position along the border giving movement to object.
Planes change their form in an ergonomic way, turning into a border to sit, lay, stand on or walk through.

Proposed project: Habitable complex. Development period: 6 weeks. The problematic of an activity and a specific dynamic brought into the question of “what should be design?” turns into the challenge of this task. The real function of the project must be understood in order to develop the design idea, which will be created through the exploration of three-dimensional abstract forms based on a personal interpretation of the place. The site has relevant topography, panoramic views and the project must be conformed by 6 units.

This habitable complex is located in the zone of Tres Ríos, Cartago, Costa Rica. Each housing unit was situated obeying to the ideal topography, climate conditions and visual points. Having each one of them its individual space but at the same time joined to the rest by a perimetral walk that connects all of them and the parking zone. The design process started with the meaning of the Spanish word for home “hogar”, that has its origin referred to “hoguera” (fire place), in which all the social activities of the house were organized around. This word comes from the Latin “Fos” which means light.

In the module a perforation is made to permit the light into a central spot in the house.
Taking this atrium as the central point the rest of the distribution is made, as all the social spaces surround the illuminated area.

The geometry starts following the pattern given by the visual points of the place.
An articulation in between the 6 units is created, letting them become a complex as well as it works as a circulation space.

DESIGN INTENTIONS
1 Maintain a fluid circulation in between the exterior and the interior of the habitational unit, letting it in and form the outer lobby of the house.
2 Make use of the southern view with the principal openings towards this direction.
3 Seek for the lower elevation possibly agreeing to the land, using terraces. Separate the volume in 2 levels, one for social spaces and the other for private ones.

In order to adapt to the different slope levels founded in the land, two types of residential units had to be designed. Both have in common the rectangular form in which they distribute (this because of the lack of space for 19 units to be ďŹ tted in). The A unit has its entrance in the lower level, on the contrary of the B unit, which is located in a steeper zone, and had to be designed with the entrance on its upper level.
