FALL 2017 • Prof. Marcus FARR This project aims to reflect on nature’s influence on Architecture and the human experience through the lens of erosion by drawing on the geomorphic forces (wind abrasion) that shape the ecology of the natural environment. By utilizing this same force in the urban environment to carve out habitable spaces for reading, the project seeks to embody the ideas of the “Sublime and the Beautiful” to shape space and perception to curate nurturing learning space.

The form is located in a remote desert in the United Arab Emirates. In response to this context, the project intends to deal with adverse climatic conditions by optimizing shading opportunities through vaulted enclosures and manufacture moments of meaningful light interaction to enhance the ritual of bathing.

Skin and Bones This project explores the properties of a folded plane. The plane can be folded and cut to produce a texture, pattern and space in unique and surprising ways. Explore the subtlety that light plays on form to create a design that responds to the properties of the material and the qualities of surface. Historically in architecture, the skin always responded to the bones. In this project, the bones will respond to the skin.

Bar+/This project explores three-dimensional systems of organization and space making with two-dimensional graphic representation. The focus of this conceptual exploration is the development of a critical process of making and remaking to examine relationships and variations of form through order, continuity, transition, layering, connection, penetration, juxtaposition, implied movement, density, repetition and/or hierarchy.
